LOS ANGELES, Nov. 7, 2014 – Building on the bold expansion of its original programming slate, WGN America has ordered to production its first two unscripted series, the docudrama “Outlaw Country,” executive-produced by Bischoff Hervey Entertainment’s Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey (“The Devils Ride”), and the docuseries “Wrestling with Death,” executive-produced by Leftfield Pictures’ Brent Montgomery and David George (“Pawn Stars”).  Kicking off the new year with thirteen weeks of unscripted original programming, “Wrestling with Death” is set to premiere Tuesday, January 13 (10:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 p.m. CT), followed by “Outlaw Country” on Tuesday, February 24 (10:00 p.m. ET/ 9:00 p.m. CT).

Set in the town of Buckner, Missouri, “Outlaw Country” chronicles the perennial battle between law enforcement and crime by following Steve and Mike Cook, brothers who act as Sheriff and head of the Buckner Criminal Task Force, respectively, as they clash with John and Josh Monk, brothers they suspect are responsible for the town's surge in crime.  In this one hour docudrama, producers were given full access to both the police force and the Monk Brothers' camp, providing an unprecedented look at crime in a small town from both sides of the law.  “Outlaw Country” is executive-produced by Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey for Bischoff Hervey Entertainment (“The Devils Ride,” “Hardcore Pawn: Chicago”), alongside Robert Kaprill and Peter Karlin.  WGN America has ordered seven one-hour episodes to premiere Tuesday, February 24, 2015 (10:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 p.m. CT).

Executive producers Leftfield Pictures (“Pawn Stars,” “American Restoration,” “Counting Cars”) presents “Wrestling with Death,” a unique family docuseries that introduces The Lathams of Osceola, Arkansas: morticians by day who run The Wilson Funeral Home, and professional wrestlers by night who run The Mid-Southern Championship Wrestling League.  “Wrestling with Death” is executive-produced by Brent Montgomery, David George, Alex Weresow and Jordana Hochman, alongside Bill Katz and Michelle Katz for Espiritus Productions.  Bill Duncan and David Duncan serve as consulting producers.  Twelve weekly back-to-back half-hour episodes have been ordered to premiere Tuesday, January 13, 2015 (10:00 p.m. ET/ 9:00 p.m. CT).

WGN America launched its strategy of delivering distinctive, original scripted and unscripted content last year.  “Outlaw Country” and “Wrestling with Death” join a growing stable of destination programming on WGN America, which includes the second season premiere of its hit supernatural series “Salem” in April 2015, along with the second season of its critically acclaimed original drama “Manhattan” and exclusive syndicated series “Person of Interest” and “Elementary,” all scheduled to premiere in 2015.  The network also recently announced a straight-to series order for the scripted drama “Outsiders” (formerly “Titans”).

ELLIS AND HOWARD’S TREES, VOL. 1
TAKES ROOT THIS FEBRUARY
The growing science-fiction mystery series
will be collected into trade paperback

“Effectively shakes the status quo.”
—PASTE Magazine

Bestselling writer Warren Ellis (Moon Knight, Transmetropolitan) and artist Jason Howard—the creative team known for their hit webcomic series SCATTERLANDS—reunite for an all-new science fiction mystery filled with foreboding and laced with a Ballardian tone in TREES, VOL. 1, which collects the first eight issues of the ongoing series.

TREES is set in an uncertain future, ten years after they landed. All over the world. Standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if the planet was uninhabited and nothing was under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.

"I wrote Trees for Jason, because nobody understood how brilliant a comics artist he is,” said Ellis. “And I wrote it for me, because I was interested in how the massive and strange things in our lives bend the world around them and make our lives weird and dangerous while we desperately try to pretend that everything is normal."

TREES, Vol. 1 (ISBN: 978-1-63215-270-1) hits shelves on 2/11 and will be available for $14.99. It can be pre-ordered by retailers from Diamond Book Distributors with Diamond Code DEC140696.

Praise for TREES:

“Ellis still manages to ignite a creative flare that effectively shakes the status quo… Trees finds the writer again doing what he does best—the unexpected.”
—PASTE Magazine

“I think my favorite part of Warren Ellis at the wheel of a comic is that you really never know what you are going to get.” —ScienceFiction.com

“The book's large scope is intriguing, made even more so when considering that much of humanity's demise is self-inflicted… Ellis and Howard appear prepped to deliver a uniquely exciting read.” —IGN

“Between this and Moon Knight it's great to see Ellis not just writing comics, but writing excellent comics.” —Comic Book Resources

Trees is certainly worth a continued watch, especially given Jason Howard's art. He seamlessly balances both line work and color art resulting in a story that is well-paced and makes use of colors that provide emphasis in all the right moments.”

RASPUTIN HYPNOTIZES READERS
Issue #1 of the historical fantasy from Grecian & Rossmo
will go to a second printing

New York Times bestselling writer Alex Grecian (PROOF) and fan-favorite artist Riley Rossmo (PROOF) have resurrected the mad monk in their new ongoing historical fantasy RASPUTIN, and readers have fallen under their spell. Issue #1 sold out instantly at the distributor level and is slated for a second printing to meet customer demand.

RASPUTIN #1 combines the dark horror of Dracula with the historically rich drama of Downton Abbey. In one night Rasputin was poisoned, beaten, stabbed, shot in the head, drowned, then tied up and thrown in a frozen river. It was really bad timing. His beard was just coming in nicely.

The feedback we’ve had on this book is amazing,” said Grecian. “It feels like this is the best work Riley and I have ever done together and we’re thrilled that so many readers seem to agree. Rasputin is going to stay alive for a long time to come. We’ve got big plans for him.”

RASPUTIN #1 remains available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

RASPUTIN #1, 2nd printing arrives in stores on and can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code SEP148362.

RASPUTIN #2 hits stands on 11/26 and can be ordered with Diamond Code SEP140744.

EPIC FANTASY RULES SUPREME IN SOVEREIGN

Cultures, magic, and reason collide in December graphic novel from Image Comics

SOVEREIGN, a new graphic novel from Image Comics, is a lush, dark fantasy slated for publication in December. Written by Chris Roberson (iZombie, Edison Rex) and drawn by Paul Maybury (AQUA LEUNG, Catalyst Comix), SOVEREIGN reveals an expansive world of clashing religions and philosophies, rich cultures, and untold horrors.
In Khend, “Land of a Thousand Gods,” the old traditions of the Luminari, who conduct the rites of the dead, burning the bodies to keep them from being vessels for dark powers, are fading. Three Luminari journey to the court of the Emperor to warn of the Convergence, an event that will raise the dead, while power struggles within the court threaten the empire.
Writer Roberson has been a science fiction and fantasy author for many years, but SOVEREIGN marks his first foray into epic fantasy, as he related in an interview on the Image Comics website.
“I’d always wanted to do a big, sprawling ‘secondary world’ fantasy (as they’re called in the prose world),” Roberson told Multiversity Comics, “and had wanted to do a story that was about different cultures in collision, with their various philosophies and religions and outlooks.”
Artist Maybury’s drawing strategy reflected the themes of colliding cultures.
“Part of what I like about fantasy as a genre is the idea of it coming from within,” he said. “If I have to draw an elephant, I first want to draw whatever default elephant is in my head. Then I’ll go look one up and bring some of those details into the drawing. The same goes for people and architecture. It keeps everything loose, and leaves the door halfway open to follow history and culture just enough to give you an idea of what to expect, but also allows me to pull from different cultures and ideas that might not be historically or even geographically present.”
SOVEREIGN will be in comic book stores on December 3 and in bookstores on December 16. It is available for pre-order now.

Praise for SOVEREIGN:
“Roberson and Maybury have created a vast and deep fantasy world that any fan can and should get lost in.” –Kyle Welch, All-Comic
“...an intellectually stimulating read on every level. Roberson’s writing and Maybury’s art conspire to build a world that you have to participate in to understand…”
–Michelle White,
Multiversity Comics
“...this book achieves a rare kind of world-building that envelops you from the moment you read the first page… The richness of that story crafting combines well with the consistently brilliant art of Paul Maybury, who continues to affirm his self as a premiere action-oriented / monster artist, the likes of Jeff Stokoe and Paul Pope.”

BOOM! Box, an Imprint of BOOM! Studios, Announces Its First Collected Trade Paperback with 'The Midas Flesh' Vol. 1

The Midas Flesh V1 TP
The Midas Flesh Vol. 1 TP Cover by Emily Partridge

November 5,  2014 - Los Angeles, CA - Nearly one year ago, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios announced their newest imprint BOOM! Box, a home for comics “made for the love of it.” The publisher is now pleased to announce the collected first volume of the imprint’s inaugural series, The Midas Flesh. Created by the longtime creative theam behind the Adventure Time comics, writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics) and artists Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, The Midas Flesh is an edge-of-your-seat, save-the-universe adventure with two butt-kickin’ ladies and a dinosaur in a spacesuit. The first volume collects issues #1-4 of this quirky space epic and features a casewrap covered in striking gold fingerprints.

“When you create an imprint that’s intended to encourage weird, experimental, and eclectic comics, you have to start off with a series that really embodies that mission,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The Midas Flesh is just that for BOOM! Box. Ryan, Shelli, and Braden have already proven themselves to be some of the best storytellers in comics with their run on Adventure Time, and they’ve outdone themselves with The Midas Flesh. Plus: dinosaur on a spaceship. Hard to beat that.”

About The Midas Flesh: We’ve all heard of the Midas Touch. You know, the Greek myth about the man who did a number on himself by wishing for everything he touched to turn to gold? Well, you haven’t heard everything. Joey and her space crew have decided to return to Earth—a planet completely sectioned off, abandoned, and covered in gold—to find out exactly what happened to this once thriving planet and see if they can use that knowledge against the evil empire that’s tracking them down. As luck would have it, they just landed the most powerful weapon in the universe: some ancient dead guy’s body.

The Midas Flesh Vol. 1 trade paperback arrives in comic shops on December 3rd with a cover price of $14.99 under Diamond order code OCT141163. The cover is illustrated by Emily Partridge (Adventure Time). The Final Order Cutoff deadline for retailers is November 10th. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! It’s also available for order directly from boom-studios.com.
