Los Angeles (November 14, 2008) – Imagi Studios announced today that it has signed worldwide licensing agreements with IDW Publishing, American Greetings, Penguin Group (USA) Inc., Jazwares Inc., and D3Publisher for Astro Boy, its upcoming CG-animated film based on the adventures of the superhero icon. The studio’s agreement with American Greetings also extends to future Imagi films. Astro Boy, slated for domestic release on October 23, 2009, is being distributed worldwide by Summit Entertainment except for Imagi’s reserved territories of Japan, Hong Kong and China.

“The suite of promotions that has formed in support of the worldwide roll out of this wonderful family film is extraordinary,” said Nancy Kirkpatrick, President of Worldwide Marketing for Summit Entertainment. “The blue-chip partners on board are a testament to a high level of early anticipation for this animated adventure.”

American Greetings, one of the world’s largest creators, manufacturers and distributors of social expression products, will create items such as greeting cards, stationery, gift wrap and party goods inspired by Imagi properties.

“Imagi's upcoming films include an array of beloved characters with terrific storylines, which lend themselves perfectly for consumers to celebrate through a number of product formats within the social expression category,” said Michael Brown, VP of Licensing, American Greetings Corporation. “We are excited to be embarking on a long-term alliance with Imagi Studios.”

The innovative children’s toy and activity company Jazwares will be the master toy licensee for Astro Boy.

Penguin, one of the world’s largest trade book publishers, will introduce a full range of Astro Boy publications.

In addition, IDW Publishing will support Astro Boy with comic book and graphic novel titles inspired by the film.

Imagi has also partnered with interactive entertainment software leader D3Publisher to publish and distribute Astro Boy game software.

“We’re thrilled at the prospect of both building the Astro Boy brand and further developing our relationship with Imagi,” said Bill Anker, VP of Business Development and Licensing, North America and Europe, D3P. “Our agreement is an excellent complement to our portfolio and the Astro Boy videogame will be a new way for fans, as well as gamers, to experience this renowned character.”

Imagi Studios and Summit Entertainment, the distributor for Astro Boy, also concurrently announced global marketing partnerships with Striker Entertainment as the exclusive licensing agent for the Astro Boy movie while Rogers & Cowan will serve as the promotional agency.

Licensing veterans Russell Binder and Marc Mostman, working together under the Striker Entertainment banner, will deliver a full-fledged consumer products program on a worldwide basis to mass-market consumers with focus on the core six-to-14 demographic.

Striker Entertainment’s Russell Binder said: “Imagi delivers exceptionally high-quality CG animation with a ton of entertainment value that should naturally translate to toys, videogames, publishing and other key categories. Imagi’s production style, coupled with the global iconic character of Astro Boy, perpetrates a ‘perfect storm’ entertainment brand.”

Rogers & Cowan, a leading entertainment public relations and marketing agency, will facilitate promotional partnerships for Astro Boy.

Tom Tardio, Rogers & Cowan CEO, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Imagi Studios on this high-profile project. The family-friendly appeal of the Astro Boy film positions the franchise as a perfect promotional partner for consumer brands seeking to reach kids of all ages and their parents.”

Set in the future, Imagi Studio’s Astro Boy is a classic superhero origin story about a young robot with incredible powers and his adventure-filled journey in search of his identity and destiny, taking him into a netherworld of robot gladiators before he returns to save Metro City.

David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing Astro Boy and Maryann Garger is the producer. The all-star cast is headed by Academy Award®-winning actor Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy and Donald Sutherland, with Freddie Highmore in the title role. Story is by David Bowers, and Timothy Harris (Kindergarten Cop, Trading Places) wrote the screenplay.

The iconic character Astro Boy has found global popularity since his creation in the early 1950s by Japan’s Osamu Tezuka, known as the “god of manga” and “father of anime”, and has been the hero of three acclaimed animated television series aired around the world.

It’s So . . . Baylis!
Comics writer’s funny So Buttons digs into heart-touching topics ranging from Dad to Dachau to dating

"Don't let Baylis fool you. Yes, his comics are funny, but I read them for the quiet, human moments that will stick with you long after you've finished reading."

Xeric award winner Nick Bertozzi (The Salon and Houdini: The Handcuff King)

“Baylis' observations and anecdotes are amusing and revealing.”

Sequart.com

“A fun comic. Jonathan is a writer to keep an eye on.”

Xeric award winner Scott Mills (Cells)

These experts are talking about So Buttons, a new comic book by writer Jonathan Baylis. His tales -- personal yet accessible to anyone who’s struggled through growing up -- are "a promising collection of collaborations… transitioning somehow seamlessly from interracial porn to the musical Annie,” according to Jeffrey Brown, comics creator for McSweeney’s and Drawn & Quarterly.

Joining Baylis on So Buttons are three gifted artists. Says comics blogger Shannon Smith, “Each artist has a distinct style from the others, but they all make good comics.”

• T.J. Kirsch has drawn for publishers ranging from Archie Comics to Slave Labor Graphics. He’s most recently worked on Uncle Slam Fights Back! with writer Ande Parks for Oni Press.

• David Beyer Jr. has worked on Image Comics’ Tales of the Starlight Drive-In and his own strip, “The Twisted Adventures of Stinko.”

• Mr. Alan is a man of mystery.

So Buttons’ stories include:

• “So . . . My Dad Got Drafted?”, a tale of surprising family secrets.

• “So . . . Racist?”, which delves into unconscious levels of racism.

• “So . . . The Sun Won’t Come Out Tomorrow,” about Annie’s odd power.

• “So . . . I’m Dating a Comic” and “So . . . She Moved in with Me Anyway,” strips revealing why comedy is easy but dating is hard.

• “So . . . Heaven Smells Like Bacon,” a slice of life in a diner.

• And the finale, “So . . . Only Nixon Could Go to China,” covering the Jewish Baylis’ trip to Europe -- and, in particular, to Dachau.

So Buttons is on sale now, and Baylis is available for interviews. For more information, visit http://www.sobuttons.com.

Good Comics For Kids
“[Saltwater Taffy] will delight kids and parents equally.” -GoodComicsForKids.com

Aint It Cool News Review
“Matthew Loux does a great job of recreating that feeling of a pair of city boys on vacation with their parents, looking at everything with wide eyes and disbelief … It’s the kind of story that tweaks the imagination … Anyone who has ever longed for that feeling of innocence and wonder, of childhood vacations and adventures with family, should check this one out.” - Ambush Bug AintItCool.com

“…I can’t help but think that kids will be just [as] entranced by Loux’s graphic novel as I was by my books back in the day …a book that could be used almost as a lesson in how to properly pace a story. Not a single one of its 96 pages are wasted … Loux packs a lot of fun into this book, and with each new twist and turn it just gets more and more entertaining. You’ll read it quickly not because it’s short, but rather because it’s hard to not want to read it as fast as you can… so that you can go back to the first page and start all over again. Fun, fun, fun from start to finish. More, please.” -ReadAboutComics.com

Eye On Comics
“This is an adorable little book, and it actually lives up to the label “all ages,” normally associated with comics that are really just for kids alone.” –Don MacPherson.

Johnny Bacardi Show
“…you’ll find yourself having a good time with this story of a giant lobster with sinister designs on not only the surface world but his own fellow lobsters as well, and how the boys team up with a wizened old fisherman to battle it ... First of what appears to be a very enjoyable series. A-“

"The Fund is a team effort that only exists because of the efforts of the whole industry -- from publishers and creators to retailers and fans. With this project, members of each of those communities stepped up to speak up with one voice in support of the Fund's work., and we're tremendously grateful for their efforts. "

The now sold-out anthology, conceived by editor Scott Dunbier, included a star-studded line-up of contributors and characters from across the industry including: HELLBOY by Mike Mignola, DANGER GIRL by J. This December readers will have a second chance to support the Fund as a second printing, featuring an all-new Thor cover by acclaimed series artist Walter Simonson, will hit stands.

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson added, "We couldn't be more proud to support the CBLDF and their never-ending battle to defend our medium's first amendment rights. Considering Image's place in the industry as a bastion of independent, creator-owned comics, we feel they're one of the most important institutions in the industry and look to support them at every chance we get."

In this George Romero-directed installment, zombies have taken over the country, except for a small group of scientists and military personnel who reside in an underground bunker/ government lab. As they race to find a “cure,” disturbing facts are revealed, pitting soldiers against scientists and, of course, zombies. Preceded by Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, and succeeded by Land of the Dead, Romero cites this film as his personal favorite –even making a cameo as one of zombies. Day of the Dead garnered a 1986 Saturn Award for Tom Savini for best make-up from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.

THE RAGE (2007)

Robert Kurtzman, behind one of the top make-up and effects shops in the business and such films as From Dusk Till Dawn, Vampires, Cabin Fever, Hostel and The Devil’s Rejects, deftly utilizes his genre skills in The Rage, which he co-wrote and directed. In this gory take on the zombie genre, a mad scientist (Andrew Divoff) experiments with a rage-inducing virus on innocent victims. When these victims escape, they have a new found appetite for human flesh -- as do the mutant vultures that feed on the rage-infected humans. Reggie Bannister (Phantasm series), the “hardest working man in the horror genre”, co-stars in a film Dread Central calls a “new splatter classic”.

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People builds to big finish with episodes featuring Dangeresque and Trogdor

New episode set to release November 17 on PC and WiiWare, followed by "burninating" season finale

SAN RAFAEL, CA, November 11, 2008 – Starring in a popular web cartoon wasn't enough. Strong Bad, who has been answering fan emails on Homestarrunner.com since 2001, has crossed over to dominate PC and WiiWare™ gaming in Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, an episodic series created by Sam & Max developers Telltale, Inc., and Homestarrunner.com creators Mike and Matt Chapman. Starting this month, the Strong Bad game series is barreling to an exciting climax with two episodes featuring the franchise's most iconic characters: Dangeresque, a crooked cop in pursuit of glory, justice (sort of), and big sacks of cash, and Trogdor, the one-armed, fire-breathing dragon who burninates peasants across the land.

First up is Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective, Strong Bad's oft-delayed cinematic oeuvre, set to release on November 17. The final installment in a series of low-budget action flicks starring, written by, and directed by Strong Bad, Dangeresque 3 has been teased on Homestarrunner.com for over five years. Unlike the first two "movies," which took the form of online cartoons, Telltale's Dangeresque 3 game places you inside the film in the role of the title character, with Homestar Runner, Bubs, The Cheat, Strong Mad, and the rest of the Homestarrunner.com crew rounding out the cast. Complete with shaky camera shots, flubbed lines, and awkward post-production editing, Dangeresque 3 provides the humorous, homemade movie experience Strong Bad fans have come to expect, plus an added layer of interactivity.

In Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective, what starts as a simple job to recover a long-lost formula morphs into a high-stakes race to save the world from certain destruction at the hands of Dangeresque's unhinged nemesis, Uzi Bazooka. The filmic fantasy is maintained throughout the game, down to the inclusion of interactive "deleted scenes" accessible only after the main storyline has been completed. The original Dangeresque cartoons and a preview of the upcoming game can be viewed at www.dangeresque3.com.

Then comes Trogdor! If you've ever snickered at a Homestarrunner.com cartoon, you probably recognize the name. After months of speculation, Telltale is confirming that the infamous one-armed dragon plays a role in the fifth and final Strong Bad episode. A first glimpse of the menacing Burninator—as well as another surprise for longtime Homestarrunner.com fans—can be seen starting on November 17, in the preview video included with Dangeresque 3.

Like episodes of a television sitcom, the Strong Bad games are self-contained and new players can jump into the series with any episode. The first three Strong Bad episodes are available now, for PC from www.telltalegames.com/strongbad, or for the Wii™ console through the Wii Shop Channel. Fans anticipating the upcoming Dangeresque 3 release can preorder the PC version from Telltale, either individually or as part of a 5-episode season pass.

About Homestarrunner.com
Homestar Runner was conceived in 1996 by Mike Chapman and friend Craig Zobel as an idea for a weird kids' book they would only make a few photocopies of for friends. In 2000, Mike and brother Matt dusted off the idea and launched HomestarRunner.com, featuring the Flash-animated exploits of the characters. Since 2002, they have updated with new cartoons almost every week including the popular feature 'Strong Bad Email' in which fans get their emails answered by the cartoon's charming antagonist, Strong Bad. Mike and Matt write and animate the cartoons with Matt and Missy Palmer providing voices for the characters. The site has been featured and mentioned in the New York Times, Wired Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Time, The Wall Street Journal, and, most importantly, two songs from the site were featured in the Guitar Hero series.

NEW FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA TO BE FEATURED IN A COMIC BOOK

The life of America’s future first lady, Michelle Obama, will be the subject of the latest chapter of Bluewater Productions' ongoing "Female Force" comic series. The book will follow Obama, a Princeton- and Harvard-educated lawyer, from her youth on the South Side of Chicago to her community, civic service and private-sector career successes through the 2008 presidential campaign and election day. The book is scheduled for release in April 2009.

"Mrs. Obama is a dynamic force and one of the most influential women in the world,” said Bluewater Productions President Darren G. Davis. "Her potential influence on future policy decisions makes her a fascinating figure to feature.”

"In creating an image of our new first lady, Michelle Obama, it was my goal to represent her class, beauty and intelligence," said artist Vinnie Tartamella. "I hope I reflected these qualities and characteristics in this historical piece. I'm truly honored to have been asked to create this."

The latest addition to the "Female Force" series follows the biographies of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, announced earlier this year. “Female Force” comic books showcase influential women who are making and shaping modern history. The “Hillary Clinton: Female Force” comic book is available for order through Diamond Distributors, order code NOV083848 F.
R2-D2's inner workings revealed in Friday's

episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS

What is R2-D2 made of? Audiences will find out, both literally and figuratively, in "Duel of the Droids," an all-new episode of the hit animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, premiering at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, Nov. 14, on Cartoon Network.

In the episode, Anakin, Ahsoka and replacement droid R3-S6 (aka "Goldie") embark on a dual rescue/sabotage mission when they discover R2-D2 is being held at General Grievous's secret enemy listening post.

Writer Kevin Campbell ("Disney's House of Mouse," "Jackie Chan Adventures") created a little extra work for the Lucasfilm Animation crew when he used the unusually vivid word "splayed" to describe how R2-D2's internal mechanisms would be removed and exhibited across an examining table. That gave the production team ample opportunity to delve into Artoos’s inner workings, as well as to have a little fun at director Rob Coleman’s expense.

"Dave (Filoni) and the designers – particularly Killian Plunkett – figured out what was actually inside Artoo," Coleman says. "He's the ultimate Swiss Army knife, and we all love the myriad things that come out of him, but having to build and animate all of that is another story. Lucasfilm Animation's Gary Scheppke got a box full of 'Artoo bits,' and the modelers – basing it off the actual hardware – crammed it into the model inside the computer. There are definitely some recognizable pieces on that table from the films, as well as all the things that show up for the first time in this episode – a cutter wheel, suction cups, etc. Then they animated in a few things like a pea shooter and a boxing glove just to get my attention. They're funny guys."

Campbell says he took pride in the opportunity to add some history for Artoo and his capabilities, showing some aspects of the droid that audiences haven't seen before.

"I love that we’re adding back story to the back story. We discover that when Princess Leia hides the Death Star plans inside Artoo in Episode IV, it's not the first time he's been entrusted with important information," Campbell says. "I also like that we get to play with Anakin's emotional side. The Jedi are saying he gets too attached, that he's willing to risk everything to get Artoo back. He's a Jedi, and yet he assigns sentimental value to an inanimate object. I can relate to that, because that's real loyalty."
AWARD-WINNING WEBCOMIC COMES TO PRINT COMICS THIS MONTH FROM IDW PUBLISHING

The Dreamer: Adventure, Romance, War... 1776 is back!

(November 10, 2008) San Diego, CA—Lora Innes’s webcomic, The Dreamer, transported the reader back to our nation’s rocky conception at the beginning of the American Revolution, and now the award-winning series will be released as printed comic books for the first time.

The Dreamer will be released as a six-issue miniseries starting this month. Issue #1 reaches comics retailers on November 12th. Each issue will include Lora Innes’s original cover art, as well as new covers painted by Jenny Frison.

The Dreamer is equal parts 18th-century adventure and 21st-century teenage slice-of-life tale. It is the story of 17-year-old Beatrice Whaley, a wealthy high school senior who lives in Boston and aspires to a career on Broadway. But her plans for her future are rudely interrupted by the past when she awakes from a vivid and unforgettable dream about a soldier in a redcoat. As the dreams continue, always starting where the last one ended, she attempts to keep the two worlds separate until they begin to overlap. She has no choice but to become involved and finds herself fighting for her life next to Knowlton’s Rangers in the largest battle of 1776. The Dreamer tells a story of the American Revolution with acclaimed historical accuracy through the eyes of Knowlton’s Rangers, a group of ordinary men turned citizen soldiers--farmers, school teachers and young boys--and reminds us that the fate of America was anything but certain.

Launched as a webcomic in the summer of 2007, The Dreamer very quickly gained a huge cult following online. It debuted in the top 50 of Top Web Comics, soared upward and has held a healthy spot on the listing for a year. Just five months after it began its weekly update schedule, The Dreamer was nominated in the Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards as the “Outstanding Newcomer Comic” of 2008. Later that same year, it won three awards at the Drunk Duck Awards, the largest community of online comics on the web: “Best Adventure Story,” “Best Digital Art” and “Best Romance,” and was nominated in three other categories. The Dreamer has quickly gained a reputation amongst readers and creators as one of the highest quality webcomics in terms of both artwork and story—an opinion reflected by IDW Publishing in their decision to collect and publish The Dreamer.

The Dreamer counts among its diverse readership teachers, historical re-enactors, high school and college girls and more. “The web has made comics accessible to entirely new demographics of people who never would have dreamed of buying comic books before they added that first webcomic to their morning RSS feed,” says creator Lora Innes, “So if these people can find great, compelling stories that capture their heart on the web, I can’t help but believe that their attitude toward print comics won’t be changed. I see the webcomics experiment bringing in a whole new readership to print comics, and frankly, I’m excited to be a part of it.”

The Dreamer #1 (Diamond Order Code SEP08 4131), a 32-page $3.99 full-color comic, will be in stores on November 12, 2008.

GOTH CRUISE

Directed By Jeanie Finlay

Premieres on IFC FREE (VOD): November 27, 2008 at Midnight.

Grab your eyeliner, dust off your black leather trousers and prepare for IFC’s riotous black celebration.

IFC FREE is giving music lovers everywhere an alternative way of celebrating Thanksgiving with fun loving documentary GOTH CRUISE, which follows 150 British and American Goths as they sail around the Caribbean for five days on the recent 4th Annual Goth Cruise. The week long jaunt includes a masquerade ball, a fashion show, a charity art-auction, moonlight swims, ‘Club Goth at sea’ events and formal dining. More traditional cruise pursuits include shuffleboard and a shore visit to the tropical port of Bermuda.

GOTH CRUISE takes a dip into one of the only lasting subcultures coming out of the 1980’s. Treating viewers to the spectacles of the Whitby Goth Festival in the UK (the birthplace of Goth), the film also introduces them to the people behind the white makeup and black eyeliner, exploring the reasons and beliefs for their unabashed stance against the mainstream.

GOTH CRUISE investigates this unlikely marriage, starting in the UK at the original home of Goth, the glorious Whitby Goth Weekend Festival. It meets a gaggle of British Goths (some cruise veterans, some virgins) in their home environment, then follows them to the U.S. to meet their American counterparts. From there these two groups embark on their Caribbean tour.

However, there isn’t only tension between the 150 Goths and 2, 500 non-Goths (“Norms”) onboard this luxury cruise ship of the damned. As one Goth Cruiser says: “Cruises attract two particular types of people: the morbid, and the morbidly obese.”

Just how do you reconcile sweeping sadness, morbid fascination and the beauty of enduring pain while sipping a Pina Colada in the Caribbean? Is hell really other people, or is it just sharing a boat with Hawaiian shirt clad senior citizens? Goth Cruise answers these questions and more, carried along by a strong Goth/Calypso soundtrack, proving that with enough rum and factor 50, even Satan’s chosen ones won't spontaneously combust in the sun.

Featuring: Musicians Wayne Hussey (The Mission/ Sisters of Mercy), Voltaire, and Andi Sex Gang with a soundtrack featuring Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Fields of the Nephilim, Rome Burns and more.

GOTH CRUISE- DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

When I was 17 years old I threw out my pink, bought a black fringed skirt, crimped my dyed hair, bought Bauhaus’ back catalogue and gave my heart to Robert Smith (The Cure). The pop charts didn’t offer solace for my troubled adolescent heart in the same way that Andrew Eldridge of The Sisters of Mercy and Morrissey could. When he sang - “I wear black on the outside because black is how I feel on the inside” - it was like he had written it just for me.

I was a GOTH.

Growing up in the North East of England within spitting distance of Whitby, the home of Dracula, there were pretty much two choices of tribe available to me: Goth or not.

I enjoyed the easy access rebellion, the opportunity it gave me to revel in the darker side of life and the kinship I felt with my newfound brothers and sisters in black. It enabled me to assert my independence from my parents and toughened me up. I felt the dual pleasures of reveling in the attention my outrageous outfits elicited and resenting the hassle I received from people that didn’t understand my life or choice of outfit.

After two years of being a card-carrying member of the Goth community I started to tire of black, black, black and more black. Art College beckoned and I felt that there were different ways to express my individuality than wearing the cookie cutter uniform of a dark rebel. Gradually the black in my wardrobe was replaced by more and more color and less than six months later Goth was merely a phase I had gone through.

Over 15 years later I attended the wedding of an old school friend. At school she was the archetypal Siouxsie Sioux Goth with giant crimped hair and heavily kohled eyes that parents despised and I loved. Now in her early 40’s, when she walked down the aisle we were met with the proof of what happens if you never grow out of Goth. She was a vision in black, channeling Mortiticia Adams from her floor length gown to her black veil. She was so exotic that I couldn’t help but feel like a ‘mundane’ and admire her commitment and staying power.

Seeing this face from my past who really seemed to embody “Goth till I die” made me want to find other Goths who had also stayed the distance. Within a few clicks I had found thousands of them. Goth is as alive and well today as it was in the eighties when Bela Lugosi’s Dead was first released.

I wanted to know:

What is the enduring allure of Goth that people all over the world find so appealing?

Why do some people commit to Goth for life?

How do grown up Goths earn a living, raise families and have fun?

Just what the hell happens on a Goth Cruise?

R2-D2 Takes Center Stage in All-New Episode

of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS

R2-D2 is lost during a fierce space battle, and Anakin must find him before the Separatists discover the Jedi military secrets locked in his memory banks, in“Downfall of a Droid,” an all-new episode of the hit animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, premiering at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, Nov. 7, on Cartoon Network.

Directed by Rob Coleman and written by George Krstic, “Downfall of a Droid” is the first episode to feature the beloved astromech droid – who Krstic, creator of Cartoon Network’s “Megas XLR,” says is his favorite STAR WARS character.

“Artoo is very childlike and inquisitive -- there’s no subterfuge to Artoo,” Krstic says. “He’s got loyalty and bravery and, while he doesn’t speak English, I think everyone understands what he’s saying. The wonderful sound design work and the incredible characterizations for Artoo have made it so that it doesn’t matter what language you speak, or where you’re from -- you can relate to Artoo and what he’s about.”

A native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and current resident of Los Angeles, Krstic has written three episodes for STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. He says his ultimate “nerd moment” came when he discovered there would be merchandising on some of the characters he’s worked on for the series.

“A few of the characters I wrote for on the series are being made into action figures and, as a fan, that’s pretty much the pinnacle of my career,” Krstic said with a laugh. “I can die happy now because it’s not going to get better.”

Dave Filoni is the supervising director of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. George Lucas is executive producer and creator of the series, and Catherine Winder is producer.
ReelArt Studios Mixes It Up With Sequential Pulp Comics

Signs Sales, Marketing and Distribution Deal With Dark Horse Comics

For well over a year now, Dark Horse Deluxe has been distributing the beautiful work of ReelArt Studios. From the stunning Snow Giants statue, inspired by the work of Frank Frazetta, to Frank Cho’s beautiful Babe & Ape, ReelArt studios has brought some of the most beautiful works to life with painstaking attention to detail. With the help of Dark Horse, ReelArt Studios has carved out a place in the marketplace amongst of the top producers of collectable statues. Now, the company ventures to move into the publishing world, utilizing an already established relationship with one of comics’ top brands.

ReelArt president, Michael Hudson came to Dark Horse with a proposal for a new imprint under the Dark Horse umbrella to transition well known pulp properties into traditional American comics. Fredric Brown’s Martians Go Home and Otis Adelbert Kline’s Swords of Venus will be the first two properties to receive this treatment. Both properties are licensed directly from the author’s estates and will feature contribution from such industry stalwarts as Bruce Jones, Martin Powell, Mike Ploog, Eduardo Barreto and Thomas Yeates. Longtime comics writer and editor, Christopher Mills will serve as Sequential Pulp’s Editor-in-.Chief.

ReelArt’s president, Michael Hudson is a life long comics fan and collector whose interests have always been outside the mainstream of super heroes. His passions have been lost civilizations, detective noir, sword and planet, science fiction, horror, jungle tales and even western stories.

States Hudson, “Aside from the very few big names such as Doc Savage, The Shadow, Conan and Tarzan I’ve just never understood why so many of these, in my opinion, wonderfully exciting tales have never been transitioned into comics. ReelArt has not been a company that follows the same path as others in collectibles and I thought why not follow that same path in publishing. There are a lot of stories I want to tell.”

The books will be released as full color 22 page stories on a bi-monthly basis. “Our plans at this time are to introduce our line in San Diego next year” states Hudson. The books will be marketed by Dark Horse Comics as a specialty imprint in late 2009. In addition, Dark Horse Entertainment will represent these projects to Hollywood studios for big screen adaptation.

Hudson says, “I’m amazed at the number of calls we’ve received from folks wanting to be a part of this.” States Hudson, “After we get these first two books up and running our plans are to venture into other genres. I love a good story and there are so many waiting to be told. Dark Horse is an amazing company, well managed and staffed with people who love what they do. The company has stood the test of time and has never forgotten its roots. With a sales and marketing staff that is second to none, unparalleled product quality, like-minded business principles and a matching love for pop culture, I couldn't imagine a better union for our new venture.“

Dark Horse president Mike Richardson states, “Michael Hudson and ReelArt Studios have produced some of the finest products in the business. We’ve been very pleased with our existing relationship and are excited by the prospect of expanding our partnership to the printed page. Comic fans are going to see a slate of amazing original projects.”

TRONDHEIM’S BACK WITH MORE NOTHINGSNBM puts cartoonist’s blog on its website as an advance peek at his new trade paperback

Lewis Trondheim, author of the best-selling DUNGEON, A.L.I.E.E.E.N., and MR. O, is bringing his comics blog back to NBM Publishing’s website. The ongoing blog, available at www.nbmpub.com/news/littlenothingblog.html, presents selections from the new LITTLE NOTHINGS: THE PRISONER SYNDROME -- the sequel to the popular LITTLE NOTHINGS: THE CURSE OF THE UMBRELLA. Drawing himself as a duck-headed everyman, Trondheim portrays the problems of modern life with warm humor.

The response to the first volume of Trondheim’s blogs has been rapturous. For instance:

• “Quirky, cute, and yet microdetailed with the inflections of a peculiar life, Little Nothings is a hoot.” -- The Onion

• “Beautifully scribbled strips center on such existential hiccups as extreme self-doubt, spontaneous superstitions and unjustified paranoia.” -- The Washington Post

• “One is left feeling comforted by the shared absurdities of life in the 21st century. A charmingly lighthearted stroll through life.” -- Publishers Weekly

• ”Extraordinary artist.” -- Booklist

LITTLE NOTHINGS: THE PRISONER SYNDROME will be on sale in January. It’s a 128-page, full-color, 6” x 9” trade paperback with a cover price of $14.95 and ISBN 978-1-56163-548-1. LITTLE NOTHINGS: THE CURSE OF THE UMBRELLA (ISBN 978-1-56163-523-8) is still available.
