PRESS RELEASE – SILVERLINE BOOKS DEBUTS TWO NEW CHILDREN’S GRAPHIC NOVELS, THE LAVA IS A FLOOR AND TIMOTHY & THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL, THIS AUGUST!
Silverline Books expands line of children’s graphic novels with THE LAVA IS A FLOOR and TIMOTHY & THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL!
22 June 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – This August Silverline Books, the children’s graphic novel imprint from Image Comics, debuts two all-new titles showcasing the human side of two very fantastic situations, THE LAVA IS A FLOOR by writer Justin Shady with artist Jeremy R. Scott and TIMOTHY & THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL by writer Michael Bullock with artist Michael Metcalf!
"I was immediately impressed with the way THE LAVA IS A FLOOR and TIMOTHY & THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL both appeal to a child’s sense of humor, while the vivid imagery captures the imaginations of new and reluctant readers alike, " Silverline Publisher Jim Valentino said. “Both books give unique twists on the everyday experiences of children, making them enjoyable for both kids and their parents.”
Silverline Books continues its tradition of bridging the gap between comics and children’s story books for a new generation of fans with THE LAVA IS A FLOOR and TIMOTHY AND THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL. THE LAVA IS A FLOOR is the story of a brother and sister troubled by a typical childhood dillema; they’re bored. Although these are not your typical sibling duo--they’re monsters living in the crater of a volcano! Using their imaginations they pretend to be the strangest creatures they can think of: humans! In TIMOTHY AND THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL, a young boy named Timothy soon finds out that with a seemingly normal beach towel he can transport himself to other worlds and times, including into the midst of an inter-galactic war!
THE LAVA IS A FLOOR (JUN090325), a 32-page full color hard cover book for $12.99, will be in stores August 5, 2009. TIMOTHY AND THE TRANSGALACTIC TOWEL (JUN090327), a 112-page full color book $16.99, will be in stores August 26, 2009. For more information please see http://www.silverlinebooks.com.

Hey gang,
This week sees the release of the massive Outlaw Territory western anthology from Image Comics. I was honored to be a part of this big ol' book put together by the mighty Michael Woods. You can find out more about the book at the blog located here: http://outlawterritoryanthology.blogspot.com/
I'm in some pretty damn respectable company, and I'm immensely proud of how my story (with amazing art by Christie Tseng) turned out.
In other news, Noel and I will have a huge announcement about our next book come Comic-Con next month, as well as hopefully some news about Elk's Run's next iteration.
As always, feel free to follow me at my blog, on Facebook, or on Twitter for more up to date and less newsworthy bites. Addresses below.
See you soon,
j.

ESSENTIAL NEW PHOTO BOOK FROM
DARK HORSE DOCUMENTS THE LIFE AND CAREER OF A PUNK ROCK LEGEND
EERIE VON’S MISERY OBSCURA FEATURES OVER 250 PHOTOS, CHRONICLING A CAREER OF OVER 20 YEARS
JUNE 22, MILWAUKIE, OR–From the deepest depths of punk rock’s 1970s primordial wastelands, through the stygian goth swamps of the 1980s, and on into the bloodstained arenas of 1990s heavy metal, Eerie Von witnessed it all.
Beginning as the unofficial photographer for punk legends the Misfits and later taking charge of the bass guitar as a founding member of underground pioneers Samhain and metal gods Danzig, the evil eye of Eerie’s camera captured the dark heart of rock’s most vital and bleeding-edge period, a time when rock and roll was not only dangerous, but downright menacing. Eerie Von’s Misery Obscura offers firsthand insight into everything from the Misfits’ humble beginnings in Lodi, New Jersey, to the heights of Danzig’s stadium-rock glory alongside metal superstars Metallica.
“I’ve been planning this book for twenty years,” Eerie Von stated. “The fans have been begging for it almost as long. It's been a great ride, and I’m glad to be able to share some of it with those who were there, and those who wish they were.”
Misery Obscura is not only an essential visual document of music history; but Eerie’s scrapbook-style stories of triumph and damnation bring to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen. Featuring layout and design by Tom Bejgrowicz, who conceived and executed the release of the infamous Misfits “Coffin Box,” Eerie Von’s Misery Obscura: The Photography of Eerie Von (1981-2009) arrives on shelves this October, just in time for Halloween!

In past years the Oni Press Talent Search has been a terrific success, and this year we’re excited to continue our search for up and coming artists at Comic-Con International in San Diego, California July 22nd - 27th, and through the mail until August 15th.
THE GUIDELINES
In order to have your portfolio reviewed, you must illustrate at least one of the below stories. Realizing that different artists are geared towards different subject matter, three professional writers have each developed a five-page script, using a different genre and showcasing a different personal scripting style.
Supernatural comedy titled Our Hero by Philip Gelatt, writer of Labor Days, and Indiana Jones Adventures.
http://www.onipress.com/talent_search_2009/our_hero_by_Philip_Gelatt.pdf
Espionage thriller titled Cold City by Antony Johnson, writer of Wasteland and the Dead Space video game series.
http://www.onipress.com/talent_search_2009/cold_city_by_Antony_Johnston.pdf

http://www.onipress.com/talent_search_2009/medicine_show_by_Frank_Beaton.pdf
At San Diego Comic-Con we will be conducting the Oni Press Talent Search in lieu of portfolio reviews. In order to guarantee a portfolio review appointment with an Oni editor during regular convention hours you will need to illustrate one or more of the three scripts provided. In addition to presenting the original art at the review session, interested parties must also bring with them 8 ½”x11″ photocopies of both penciled art and inked art for Oni Press to keep as reference. Each photocopied page should include the artist’s name, phone number, and e-mail address. The samples are preferred in a manila envelope that also includes the artist’s name and contact information in the address line.
Not attending Comic-Con? While Oni Press DOES NOT accept unsolicited submissions, we will accept Oni Press Talent Search submissions postmarked before August 15th, 2009 and mailed to:

IS COMING BACK TO
MELTDOWN
The comics legend is signing
Batman and Robin and his new book, Final Crisis!
Los Angeles – June 17th, 2009 - It is time to break brains and separate souls!
It is time to weave wonder and leave mouths agape in the wake of impenetrable accents and extraordinary ideas! It is time for YOU to return to MELTDOWN, because the Scottish swami Grant Morrison is returning to grace us with his presence and give us mere cave dwellers our first bouts of intellectual fire! Are you going to allow the microphone to be dominated with the weeping milk-tears of egg-handed fools who will simply rehash old discussions of the Talmud of Mr. Tawky Tawny or shall we look towards a brighter day to come and inquire after new scripts, songs, fashions and fabulations?
If you consider yourself a worthwhile nerd, a good geek, a fascinating fan of freak fiction, then do us a favor and start formulating your questions now so that we can extract as much information about our favorite characters and series, old and new, and even if for a moment transcend our mortal coil to a dream world of comical capes and quizzical chimpanzees. Come complete the circle and revel in the impossible.
CLIVE BARKER will hold a brief conversation with GRANT MORRISON before the signing. Copies of Mr. Morrison’s latest literary luncheons, Final Crisis HC + Batman and Robin #1, will be on sale. That same day is the release of Batman and Robin # 2. Buy one (or 3) of these 3 books and get into the event in the Meltdown Gallery.
Sadly, no outside items will be allowed due to time constrain on the talent. But don’t despair! Refreshments and music will also be provided.

IDW Goes Digital with iPhone Comic Book Applications
Debuts new ePublishing initiative with digital TRANSFORMERS comics
San Diego, CA (June 18, 2009) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce today the release of its new line of digital comic applications, allowing fans to download comics directly to their iPhone or iPod Touch, The company’s TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN movie prequels and adaptation comics, under license from Hasbro, Inc., are the first wave of IDW’s own digital applications.
“E-publishing is clearly becoming an important part of the comics world, and IDW is leading the way,” said company CEO Ted Adams. “With these new apps, people who have never even been to a comic book store can now begin enjoying this great medium in a whole new way.”
The twelve new movie-related digital comics are a must-read for all TRANSFORMERS fan, setting the stage for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, this summer’s next blockbuster film. In Alliance, readers journey across the globe as humans and AUTOBOTS join forces to defend Earth against the DECEPTICON threat. The very origins of CYBERTRON are revealed in Defiance, fully preparing fans for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, which picks up directly where the prequel comics leave off.
The TRANSFORMERS comics are supported with a custom landing page on the iTunes store and feature panel-by-panel viewing, easy to use controls, such as “swipe” navigation, and a convenient table of contents function.
These digital comic applications are the first major initiative from IDW’s new ePublishing division, helmed by Jeff Webber. Through partnerships with outside companies, IDW has already created nearly 40 digital comics, including dozens of Top 100 best sellers, such as Star Trek: Countdown. The TRANSFORMERS digital comics are the first that IDW is releasing with its own exclusive software.
“Launching our own iPhone comics is a big step for IDW, and fans of our lineup should look for many more to come,” said Webber.

These digital comic applications are the first major initiative from IDW’s new ePublishing division, helmed by Jeff Webber. PRESS RELEASE - CHRIS GIARRUSSO'S G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS MAINTAINS A LOWER PRICE THAN EVER BEFORE!
G-MAN CAPE CRISIS, originally anticipated at $3.50, will have a cover price of $2.99 for the entire series!
17 June 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - While G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS, the all-new mini-series from MINI-MARVELS cartoonist Chris Giarrusso, was originally anticipated with a cover price of $3.50, it will now feature the lower price of only $2.99!
"I know the recent price jump on a lot of mainstream titles has fans watching their wallets more than ever," Giarrusso said. "It's especially difficult to keep prices down on non-mainstream titles that don't have advertisement dollars helping to offset costs, but I'm very happy that with Image, the price of G-MAN will actually be lower than anticipated, retailing for $2.99."
G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS is the five-issue follow up to G-MAN: LEARNING TO FLY, a compilation of all of G-MAN's appearances to date, and shows what happens when pieces of G-MAN's magic cape fall into the wrong hands. While G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS was originally solicited at $3.50, the entire series will maintain a $2.99 price point, ensuring fans of all ages can afford to give the series a try!
G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS #1 (JUN090322), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in stores August 12th, 2009. G-MAN: LEARNING TO FLY DIGEST (MAR092415), a 96-page full color digest tradepaperback for $9.99, is available now. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials.
Fans can visit the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) to capture their own photograph alongside part of the Doctor Who set - as well as purchase exclusive merchandise including David Tennant figures.

Key talent from both shows introduce the last episode of the five part series Torchwood: Children of Earth and a U.S. premiere viewing of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead, the first of four specials starring David Tennant.

"There really is a tremendous piece of fiction being unveiled here, with precision and fury." – Comic Book Jesus

UNCLE SCROOGE STATUETTE SELLS OUT
IN ADVANCE OF RELEASE!
JUNE 16, MILWAUKIE, OR–Dark Horse Comics has announced that its forthcoming limited-edition statuette of Disney’s Uncle Scrooge character has sold out its edition.
The Oregon-based publisher is giving one of the comic book medium’s most revered casts of characters the Syroco-style treatment in a new series of sculpted statuettes based on Carl Bark’s Uncle Scrooge stories. There are six statuettes scheduled for the initial series.
Dark Horse has won countless accolades for this series of vintage-style statuettes featuring the best characters from comic books. Modeled after products that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, these statuettes have been designed and manufactured to be consistent with earlier Syroco-style figures. These latest pieces, sculpted by Yoe! Studio, join the ever-growing collection of the world’s most famous characters from comic strips, books and, cartoons presented by Dark Horse in this unique style.
Described by Craig Yoe as “primitive but charming,” the initial figures are limited to only 950 hand-numbered pieces per character. Uncle Scrooge arrives in August 2009, with the others following monthly. The second statuette will be of Donald Duck, with Gyro Gearloose, Magica De Spell, Gladstone Gander, and one of the Beagle Boys rounding out the program. The edition size will be reduced to an even more limited number after Donald Duck.
The Classic Uncle Scrooge Character series depicts the characters as they were originally presented in the comics. They are also somewhat more rough-hewn than is common, with features including nonslick surface textures, visible seam lines, and other slightly “distressed” aspects, for a vintage look and feel.
“We are delighted with the support from the collector marketplace,” Dark Horse product development head David Scroggy stated, “although it comes as no surprise given the worldwide collector base for Uncle Scrooge. Many consider these to be among the best comics ever produced, and we hope to equal that high standard with these pieces.”
Each hand-numbered statuette comes carefully packaged in a custom-tooled, full-color, litho-printed tin box. Also included is a small booklet about each character and a vintage-style pin-back button of the character.

PRESS RELEASE - NEW ISSUE OF INVINCIBLE TO BE SUPER POPULAR AND BELOVED FOR VAGUE, CRYPTIC REASONS!
Something might be happening in INVINCIBLE #63 and whatever it is will quite possibly be rather amazing!
16 June 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - In an unprecedented move, writer Robert Kirkman and illustrator Ryan Ottley have made a cryptic, semi-confident promise that INVINCIBLE #63 might be kind of a big deal for reasons they wouldn't say and plan to back it up with a special Wednesday shipment direct to comic shops!
"All I'm saying is INVINCIBLE #63 reorders should be double or triple over all retailer's orders combined plus fifty thousand," Kirkman stated. "I even heard President Barack Obama might call a press conference to discuss the contents of this very special issue, because there may be something of national interest in there. Also, every newspaper ever could possibly make it a front page story. Who knows?! All I can say for sure is every single human being on the planet, regardless of whether they read comics or even know what they are, will definitely be extremely interested in this issue, maybe even enough to buy a copy!"
INVINCIBLE #63 might even possibly be the biggest comic book event of all time, up there with The Death of Superman, The Death of Captain America, The Entirety of the Early Nineties and Action Comics #1! The only certainty is everyone must place a ridiculously massive order for a non-returnable product they may or may not make a profit on sometime in the near future. Or never. Don't ask - just buy it! You trust us, right?
Added Image Comics Publisher ericstephenson, "There's a chance this could very possibly an event of undetermined importance, both for comics fans and people of all walks of life, with only the most passing familiarity with comic books, or even books, period. We can't really say what happens in this issue, but trust, something does happen. And it might even be something interesting. Best not to jinx it, though, so let's just go with, 'Something happens.' It's somewhat likely a number of people we have yet to identify will want one. "
INVINCIBLE #63 (APR090384), a 32-page full color comic book easily worth around $500, but costing only $2.99, will be in stores June 17th, 2009.

PRESS RELEASE - SAVAGE DRAGON'S DART DEBUT HITS A BULLSEYE WITH A FULL SELLOUT AS ITS 150th MILESTONE BLOWS UP TO ONE HUNDRED PAGES!
SAVAGE DRAGON #149 faces a near-immediate complete distribution level sell out as SAVAGE DRAGON #150 expands to over one hundred pages at no extra charge!
15 June 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - Barely forty eight hours after release SAVAGE DRAGON #149, featuring the major debut of the deadly Dart, faces a complete distribution-level sellout just as creator Erik Larsen announces his subsequent issue's milestone expanding from sixty four to one hundred pages with no increase in price.
"I knew Dart was going to be a big deal for SAVAGE DRAGON and it looks like fans reacted well," Larsen said. "She's going to be playing a very significant role in the road ahead, especially in the fallout of our monster sized next issue. #150 will prove to be a major turning point in the live of our Chicago's finest, so much so that keeping it at sixty four pages wasn't enough. Fans who jumped on with Dart's appearance will be very happy with the bulked up hundred page issue."
While SAVAGE DRAGON has gained an increased audience after its highly publicized relaunch several months ago, SAVAGE DRAGON #149 exceeded the previous sell through with its fastest distribution level sellout to date. In addition, even though a second printing will be released with SAVAGE DRAGON #150 this July, first printings of SAVAGE DRAGON #149 may still be available at your local comic book store. SAVAGE DRAGON #150 will now not only feature an extra length thirty-page lead story and the previously announced all-new back up stories with Thor, Vanguard and Chris Giarrusso's G-Man, but also the long lost origin of the Golden Age Daredevil by Charles Biro and the out of print origin of SAVAGE DRAGON.
SAVAGE DRAGON #149 2nd Printing (MAR098163), a 32-page full color comic book for $3.50, will be in stores July 1st, 2009 to coincide with SAVAGE DRAGON #150 (MAY090295), a 100-page full color comic book for $5.99.

DEL REY MANGA ANNOUNCES THE ACQUISITION OF
SAMURAI DEEPER KYO, WILD @ HEART
NEW YORK, NY – June 12, 2009 – Del Rey Manga, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, today announced an acquisition continuing a fan-favorite manga series, and the launch of a brand new series from one of Del Rey Manga’s most popular authors.
SAMURAI DEEPER KYO, the supernatural action series by Akimine Kamijyo, will continue to be published in the US by Del Rey Manga, beginning with a special omnibus edition that collects Volumes 35 and 36 of the Japanese editions into a single package. The story, set in feudal Japan, follows two legendary warriors and rivals, Demon Eyes Kyo and Kyoshiro. One day they meet in battle during a lightning storm, and both fighters mysteriously disappear. Kyoshiro re-emerges several months later, harboring a secret: the soul of Demon Eyes Kyo is locked inside him—and he’s determined to reclaim his body. Volume 35/36 of SAMURAI DEEPER KYO will be published in December 2009.
From the creative mind of Kitchen Princess manga-ka Natsumi Ando comes a new series promising a winning combination of drama, comedy and romance. WILD @ HEART takes the popular Western idea of Tarzan and gives it a fun shôjo manga spin. Chino is like any typical teen looking for love—but instead she finds herself stuck with Hyou, a child her father brings home from the jungle. Now she has to take care of Hyou, the wild child, and help him adapt to life outside of the jungle and in the city. The award-winning and popular Ando is also the creator of the top-selling Zodiac P.I. WILD @ HEART will debut in January 2010.

URBANIACS SNAPS OUT 14 MILLIONTH WEDGIE
ON EVE OF iPHONE LAUNCH
Urbaniacs' Mayor DaMan Announces Latest Milestone as Wedgie Toss 2 Goes Mobile
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ENCINO, Calif. – (June 11, 2009) – On the eve of the worldwide launch of Wedgie Toss 2 for the iPhone this week, Urbaniacs.com, the online comic book world come to life, reached a new milestone with the snapping of the virtual world’s 14 millionth wedgie, it was shouted from the rooftops of Urbanville by the town’s leading political figure, Mayor DaMan.
Released just a year ago, Wedgie Toss 2 was immediately embraced by the teen/tween residents of the burgeoning virtual world of Urbaniacs, who have since snapped out over 14 million game plays on www.urbaniacs.com and over 80 flash game aggregator Web sites.
"We believe 14 million+ wedgies breaks the record," said company president Josh Fisher. "What kind of record, we're not sure. If not a flash game record, then we'll claim the virtual wedgies record."
On the heels of the game’s latest milestone, Wedgie Toss 2 is embarking on a quest to conquer the world of mobile and handheld gaming devices as the latest application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Wedgie Toss 2 is now available at iTunes for 99 cents.
Wedgie Toss 2 is just one of over 25 flash games on Urbaniacs, a free social game community developed by Brandissimo! with over 150,000 members who create their own virtual super-avatar, make friends ("Homies") and take on their Arch-Enemies in multi-player battles.
ABOUT URBANIACS
Urbaniacs is a comic book world come to virtual life. Transform your online self into your own funk-infused super-avatar known as an “Urbanic.” Meet new “Homeys” or challenge your “Arch enemies” in a multiplayer battle. Each Urbaniac can be customized in thousands of ways. While the characters and styles are immediately attractive to younger audiences, the depth, clever games, and irreverent sensibility appeal to the teens and adults who play. There is a wide range of humorous and entertaining interactions for anyone looking for an adventure. Direct your Urbaniac to “The Streets” to chat with friends and show off funky super powers, or cruise to the “Arena” to take out some aggressions with a hilarious round of “Wedgie Toss.” Join a local challenge to become a “Boombox” master, or spend some time earning “Urbos” (Urbanville’s currency) while playing “Beat Bot Boogie.” There are many compelling social community features built into the comic gameplay of the world. Once you’ve earned some Urbos, you can head down to the “Pimp Out Depot” to trade them in for some fresh new gear and gadgets to equip on your Urbaniac. But be careful! At any moment, you could be faced with a challenge, assault, or battle by another Urbaniac or one of the in-game characters. Scared? Don’t be. Just invite some Homeys along and you and your crew could take over the city in no time.
The group elements make the site come to life. Try your best to out-rap Urbanville’s Mayor DaMan in the “Freestyle” rap forum or check out the “Newbie” posts to get some insider tips about how to play the more challenging games. Better yet, create your own forum and see how the Urbaniacs community responds. Urbaniacs is an evolving virtual world created to inspire the imagination and provide hours of funk funny, funky entertainment and adventure to all who participate.

REICHEN LEHMKUHL AND BLUEWATER DEVELOP "THE WASPS" FOR COMICS SERIES AND FEATURE FILM
At the height of World War II, a select group of women blazed the trail as Air Force aviators. These women, known as WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) are the subject of a new action-adventure-fantasy comic series developed by Bluewater Productions and television personality, author and former Air Force captain Reichen Lehmkuhl.
"The Wasps," is inspired by the exploits of Lehmkuhl's real-life grandmother and WASP pilot , Betty Turner Stagg, is a time travel story that follows the adventures of a modern day Air Force pilot trapped in 1942. Along with fighting Nazis, and racing against time to find a mysterious artifact, the hero gets the opportunity to fly and fight alongside his grandmother, a decorated female pilot.
"What attracted me to this story is the dynamic between grandson and grandmother," said Bluewater president Darren G. Davis, "He knows who she is, but can't tell her. There's that thin line between completing the mission and changing history. But most important, it's a love letter to family pride and the bonds of friendship that forge between people in times of danger and adversity."
The comic series, which is also being developed as a feature film, is scheduled to hit the stands 2010. “When I 1st read the comic book script for this, I fell in love with it”. Said Lisa K. Brause, from Golden House Entertainment who is developing this property as a film with Lehmkuhl attached. "Reichen is such an amazing talent, while the story is full of action adventure with a heart. These make the perfect combination to bring to a film." Brause is in development with other comic book properties such as Mike S. Miller's "Deal With the Devil," Frank Cho's "Liberty Meadows" & Bluewater's "Legend of Isis."
Lehmkuhl, best known for his winning stint on CBS' The Amazing Race as well as being a gay advocate said “I never thought I would have the opportunity to help write, design, and publish a comic book series!” said Reichen Lehmkuhl. “When Darren approached us about the project, I knew making my story into a comic book would not only help to make an important point in another effective way and would be a great deal of work, but that this project was going to be fun. I’ve learned so much about this side of the publishing industry and have a new-found respect for those who make it happen.”
Prior to Reichen’s professional acting and entertainment debut, he was playing the role of his life while in the Air Force. Not wanting to face a court martial for being gay, Reichen had to live in two different worlds. These issues will be brought up in the comics series.
The book, co-written by Lehmkuhl, Davis and Adam Gragg is being penciled by Jacob Bear.

He is one of the stars of the E! television production “Kill Reality”, and is now on the series “Dante’s Cove” (as Trevor) on the Here! Television Network. He has hosted many other shows on a variety of subjects and on a variety of major and cable networks. "Here’s What We’ll Say”, detailing the hardships of living a lie, hiding his being gay, and what needed to be done to make it through the U.S. Air Force Academy. The book was quickly picked up by Carroll and Graf and has been on shelves world-wide since Fall of 2006.
About WASP:
In the early 1940s, the US Airforce faced a dilemma. Thousands of new airplanes were coming off assembly lines and needed to be delivered to military bases nationwide, yet most of America's pilots were overseas fighting the war. To deal with the backlog, the government launched an experimental program to train women pilots to fly military aircraft. The Women Airforce Service Pilots, also known as WASP, were pioneering organizations of civilian female pilots employed to fly military aircraft under the direction of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The female pilots would eventually number in the thousands, each freeing up a male pilot for combat service and duties. Because of the pioneering and the expertise they demonstrated in successfully flying every type of military aircraft, from the fastest fighters to the heaviest bombers, the WASP blazed a trail for women of future generations to follow. The WASP had proven conclusively that female pilots, when given the same training as male pilots, were just as capable as men.

PRESS RELEASE - CHEW #1 BITES ITS WAY INTO A SELL OUT!
The cannibalistic crime thriller, CHEW, sells out with a second printing on the way!
10 June 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - CHEW, the all-new crime series with a cannibalistic twist from writer John Layman and illustrator Rob Guillory, debuted to a near immediate distribution-level sell out despite a significant overprint, resulting in a second printing.
"I've been insisting for years that the comic book industry has been clamoring for more books with double page spreads of non-costumed characters eating soup, and it's gratifying to see there indeed is a robust market for such a book," Layman said. "Big thanks to everybody --retailers, readers and reviewers-- who came out in such shocking numbers to check out something new and different, and more than a little bit weird. Rob Guillory's amazing art certainly played a big part in attracting people's attention, so I want to thank him for his great work as well."
CHEW's star, Detective Tony Chu, is a cop with a secret. As a Cibopath, Detective Chu gets a psychic impression from whatever he eats. While it means he's a hell of a Detective if he can stomach the evidence, once his secret gets out the government makes plans for him, whether he likes it or not. CHEW blends horror, mystery and the strangest ability of them all in an ongoing series of horrific crimes solved in the most horrific way possible. Since its release the book has been receiving an immense amount of buzz with many retailers directly contacting Image for as many copies as they can spare. Even Layman's fellow creators have been talking up the book.
CASANOVA and Uncanny X-Men Writer Matt Fraction commented, "Of all the times John Layman has made me want to throw up, this was the best. CHEW is disturbed and disturbing and warped and grotesque and hilarious and horrifying-- in short, exactly the kind of book we were all afraid John Layman had hiding inside of him somewhere. Now when they find the bodies, we can all hold up copies of CHEW and say SEE? WE TOLD YOU THIS WAS COMING. Oh, and Rob Gullory is going to helllllllllll."
CHEW #1 2nd Printing (APR098373) and CHEW #2 (MAY090346), both thirty-two page full color comic books for $2.99, will be in stores July 1st, 2009.

IDW Releases the Veil
New series from El Torres and Gabriel Hernandez
San Diego, CA (June 10, 2009) – Blurring the line between the living and the dead, IDW is proud to launch a new comic series from writer El Torres (Zombies!: Eclipse of the Undead) and artist Gabriel Hernandez (Clive Barker’s The Thief of Always). The Veil, with the first issue available in stores today, chronicles Chris Luna, a private eye whose clients are all dead. Unable to make a living, she is forced to move back to Maine and confront the darkness lurking in her sleepy hometown.
“Gabriel showed us what he could do when he illustrated The Thief of Always, and it’s great to have him once again put his ability to convey otherworldly concepts to good use on The Veil,” said Chris Ryall IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief. “Between his artistry and the great story telling of El Torres, we are very enthusiastic about The Veil.”
In the four-issue series, El Torres sets a truly eerie scene of ghosts wandering the streets of Crooksville, Maine and of residents slowly being driven insane by a supernatural force. Hernandez masterfully illustrates each nuance, including a malevolent presence known only as the Slug Man who threatens to rip the veil between the living and the dead.
In addition to covers by Hernandez, each issue will also feature a cover by award-winning designer/artist Ashley Wood.
“It’s said that humans only use ten percent of our brains, but we don’t think that’s true,” commented El Torres and Hernandez. “As you’ll see in The Veil, the other 90 percent is frantically trying to hide the horror of reality from us.”
The Veil #1 is now available in stores. Diamond order code APR09 0872.

IDW Announces Angel: Only Human
Four-issue miniseries starting in August
San Diego, CA (June 5, 2009) – Coming this August, IDW offers Angel fans yet another hair-raising adventure. Spinning out of IDW’s main Angel storyline, Angel: Only Human follows Illyria and Gunn on a bizarre road trip as they try to reconcile their “inner” demons with their newfound humanity. Written by Scott Lobdell with art by David Messina, Angel: Only Human is a funny and frightening five-part story with two of the Angelverse’s most complex and beloved characters.
“Angel: Only Human is a fun and creepy detour from the main storyline,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief. “This miniseries shows fans more about what’s happened to Illyria Gunn now that they’re both dealing with the consequences of After the Fall and how they tried to end, well, every thing.”
Available monthly beginning in August, Angel: Only Human takes Illyria and Gunn on a journey that involves funerals, fire, and family obligations. Not to mention the return of one of the most terrifying demon gangs from the original TV series, The Scourge. Artist David Messina beautifully illustrates every entrail-laden battle and heartfelt emotional moment as Gunn and Illyria realize they have far more in common than a desire for destruction. With striking covers by Messina, fans should also look out for variant covers by David Dorman.
Angel: Only Human #1 will be available in stores in August. Diamond order code JUN09 0935
