or Immediate Release:
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS ANNOUNCES THE ACQUISITION OF SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS STORY COLLECTION

SEATTLE, WA, JUNE 14, 2010 --- Since its debut, Significant Objects [ http://www.significantobjects.com ], the bold online inquiry into the relationship between narrative and the value of everyday objects, has been the subject of speculation by everyone from NPR to litbloggers to The New York Times’ Freakonomics crew. Some theorized about the project’s hypothesis, others about its methods and results.

Some just wanted to know: Will there be a book?

This last question can now be answered: Yes!

A collection of one hundred Significant Objects stories, seductively illustrated by top artists, will be published in 2011 by Fantagraphics Books.

This represents the most pleasing plot twist yet to the story of a very unlikely project that began as an experiment, turned into an experimental literary magazine secretly published on eBay, and currently raises money for youth tutoring nonprofits.

Founded by Joshua Glenn and Rob Walker, SignificantObjects.com appeared out of nowhere last summer, and has published an extraordinary series of 200 stories and counting – by William Gibson, Curtis Sittenfeld, Sheila Heti, Colson Whitehead, Nicholson Baker, Meg Cabot, Lydia Millet, Jonathan Lethem, and other talented writers – about ordinary stuff like novelty items, discarded souvenirs, and tasteless kitchenware picked up cheap at thrift stores and yard sales. The goal: To see if commissioning great stories about these insignificant things would increase their value – as measured in actual eBay auctions.

The LA Times’s Jacket Copy blog summarized the project’s questions: “Can a good story make something more valuable? What if it’s entirely untrue?”

Significant Objects and its contributing writers sold piles of flea-market flotsam for thousands of dollars and, as The Economist’s More Intelligent Life blog put it, “proved Walker and Glenn’s theory that stories add immeasurable value to objects.”

The New York Times’s Freakonomics blog gaped at the “supersonic premium” which Significant Objects managed to create. “Is it the intrinsic utility and beauty of a commodity that creates its value,” the Boston Globe’s Brainiac blog queried, “or the stories we tell ourselves about them?”

Some observers suggested the Significant Objects experiment had invented a new business model: “This is just one (fun) example of many of content creators smartly using infinite goods (the stories) to make a scarce good (the trinket) more valuable, and putting in place a business model to profit from it,” according to Techdirt. Cool Hunting speculated that the project had created “the first pay scale for writers based on emotional impact.”

Of course, Significant Objects was never just about the marketplace. Most importantly, it was about writers “finding magic in unexpected things,” as NPR’s All Things Considered put it. The project has published first-rate fictions by best-selling novelists and pathbreaking up-and-comers, by literary stars and experimentalists, writers for The Daily Show and other TV programs, innovative improv comics, cartoonists, journalists, and writers of young-adult fiction, mysteries, thrillers, sci fi and much more.
“The roster of authors is beyond impressive.” — the blog BookSlut

“It’s a heck of a great idea and Walker and Glenn have assembled a really terrific collection of writers to participate” — Media Bistro’s UnBeige blog

“Like a Salvation Army staffed by brilliant writers, Significant Objects has created a new kind of online journal — publishing and selling on eBay” — the blog GalleyCat

“If this is a cynical marketeer’s scam,” a columnist for The Independent (UK) suggested, “then consider me conned. Significant Objects combines one of the oldest of all media — the near-improvised short story — with the reinvigorated writer-reader relationship afforded by Web 2.0.”

The experiment, in short, was a smash hit. With enthusiastic reader/buyers from Texas to Alaska, from New York to California, and everywhere in between, Significant Objects decided to funnel auction proceeds from its second and third volumes of stories to the tutoring programs 826 National and Girls Write Now.

Does the project point the way towards a new business model for literary publishing? Are we 21st-century skeptics in thrall to talismans and totems? Once the auction sales figures have been correlated with, say, narrative exposition strategy, will Significant Objects reveal the key to the relationship between narrative and value?
All of these questions and more will be addressed (and some answered) by the Significant Objects book, which will not only feature one hundred moving, absurd, surprising, and always entertaining stories from the project's three volumes. Thanks to Fantagraphics, it will also feature new illustrations by artists from the worlds of comics, skate graphics, rock posters, children’s books, and the commercial and gallery arts.

The Significant Objects book will change the way you look at things, forever.

IF BARACK OBAMA WERE A GUARDIAN OF THE GLOBE...
Chris Giarrusso tells the story of the "real" GUARDIANS in backups to the miniseries

Berkeley, CA - 8 June 2010 - In August, we'll know more about the new GUARDIANS OF THE GLOBE: Brit, Outrun, Kaboomerang, Yeti and Bulletproof. But what about the GUARDIANS OF THE GLOBE that never were: Invincible, Spawn, Rick Grimes, Barack Obama and Gary Popper? Chris Giarrusso, creator of G-MAN, will tell their tale in a series of one-page backup stories that will run with each issue of GUARDIANS OF THE GLOBE.

"The response to the Guardians of the Globe teasers was astounding," says GUARDIANS co-writer Robert Kirkman. "So many people wanted to see a Guardians team made up of Invincible, Spawn, Rick Grimes, Barack Obama, and Gary Popper. Ask, and you will receive!"

Giarrusso states, "I'll be featuring President Barack Obama in a comic. As far as I know, this is something that has never been done before. A move like this is bound to stir up a lot of heated controversy, but I have the opportunity to do something historically groundbreaking in these strips."

As the Viltrumite War rages on within the pages of INVINCIBLE, the ranks of the Guardians of the Globe are suddenly depleted. The world is in danger and the team is in search of new blood. It's the biggest recruitment drive since Omni-Man slaughtered the original members. But will it be in time to stop The Order? This series is a can't-miss action extravaganza, with one-page backups featuring the Guardians of the Globe that never were: Invincible, Spawn, Rick Grimes, Barack Obama, and Gary Popper!

GUARDIANS OF THE GLOBE #1 (of 6) -- a 32-page full-color comic written by Robert Kirkman and Benito Cereno, illustrated by Ransom Getty, and featuring a backup story by Chris Giarrusso -- will be on sale for $3.50 on August 25, 2010. Giarusso's G-MAN, VOL. 1: LEARNING TO FLY, a 96-page full-color trade paperback for $9.99, and G-MAN, VOL. 2: CAPE CRISIS, a 128-page full-color trade paperback, will both be in stores September 29, 2010.

ABOUT THE EAGLE AWARDS:
Introduced in 1976, the Eagles are the comics industry's longest established awards. Unique in that they reflect the people's choice, they are awarded by fans who vote for their favourite in each category of the awards. They are named after the fondly remembered 1950's British comic anthology Eagle, and were originated by two British fans, Mike Conroy and Richard Burton. The awards proved to be successful, with American publishers such as Marvel Comics announcing their victories with pride. They have relaunched in 2010 with a new look, a new mandate and a new vision for the future.

ABOUT CASSANDRA CONROY:

Cassandra Conroy has been a regular presence on the UK convention scene for several years. In 2008, her father Mike Conroy handed over the running of the Eagle Awards to Cassandra, who has worked on Eaglemoss’s Classic Marvel Figurine Collection and DC Comics Super Hero Collection.

ABOUT MIKE CONROY:

Formerly editor of Comics International, Europe's trade paper, veteran comics journalist and historian Mike Conroy is the founder of the Eagle Awards. Established in 1976, they are one of the comics industry’s earliest established and most coveted international prizes. Sought after to talk about comics and movies on TV and radio, Mike has written extensively on those subjects for various publishers and magazines. He is the author of 500 Great Comic Book Action Heroes its sequel 500 Comic Book Villains and War Stories: A Graphic History as well as a major contributor to Comix: The Underground Revolution. His former position on CI followed his 10-year reign as the magazine's news editor. For over 12 years, his monthly Frame to Frame – the comics industry’s longest-running column discussing the interaction between movies and comics – had been a feature in CI, which he had been associated with since the magazine's very beginnings in 1991. Contact him at: demigod@btconnect.com.
Hey gang,
After much waiting, TUMOR will be available from your local comic book shop this coming Wednesday the 9th. To find your nearest comic shop visit http://comicshoplocator.com/ and ask them for TUMOR from Archaia Comics. if they didn't already order it, they should be able to order it from Diamond, no problem.

Also, to celebrate, I'm doing a couple of events on Wednesday. First off, at Collector's Paradise in Winnetka. I'll be there from 12 till 2pm, and you can find out more info here: http://comicsandcards.net/wordpress/2010/06/tumor-hc-release-signing-this-wednesday/

Then, at 7pm, come and join me at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood for a release party and signing. There will be beer, food, and much celebrating. More info on that event here: http://www.meltcomics.com/blog/2010/06/01/store-signing-josh-fialkov-thursday-june-3rd-7pm-8pm/

If you run a shop in L.A. and would like me to swing by and sign copies, just drop me a line, and I'll see what to do. If you're a journo interested in promoting the book, same thing.

And please, if you're a fan of what Noel and I do, let people know about the book and the events. Independent comics rely entirely on word of mouth and recommendations, so, every good word helps.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be slowly disappearing as Christina and I will be welcoming our first child into the world, so, in case I don't get to say it, thank you all for the support and love the past year.

See you next week!

EAGLES INITIATIVE ATTRACTS EXTENSIVE SUPPORT FROM TOP NAME CREATORS

HAVING recently announced the Eagles Initiative, Barry Renshaw and Cassandra Conroy are delighted to announce that the initial line-up of judges for their global talent search includes a wide range of major names from across the world and from all quarters of the comics industry.

Those writers and artists already committed to the project are: Gabriel Bá, Peter Bagge, Riccardo Burchielli, Mike Carey, Howard Chaykin, Chris Claremont, Becky Cloonan, Alex De Campi, Mike Deodato Jr, Steve Epting, Dave Gibbons, Geoff Johns, Fabio Moon, Terry Moore, Denny O’Neil, Guiseppe Palumbo, Trina Robbins, Gilbert Shelton, Gail Simone, Jeff Smith, Bryan Talbot, Roy Thomas, Jim Valentino, Ethan Van Sciver, Mark Waid and Brian Wood. In addition other aspects of the industry are represented by Ellen Abramowitz, Scott Allie, Karen Berger, Dan Berry, Tom Brevoort, Steve Brezzo, Olivier Cadic, David Campbell, Shane Chebsey, Scott Dunbier, Jay Eales, Alex Fitch, Paul Gravett, Milton Griepp, Nick Landau, Selina Locke, Jim McLauchlin, Bob Shreck, Diana Schutz, Matt Smith, Eric Stephenson, Vicky Stonebridge, Kev F Sutherland and Sean Michael Wilson.

“The name echoes the noble name of one of the great British comics papers... and the awards seek to honour new talent and good work,” stated Roy Thomas, declaring his support for the project. “So what's not to like? I'm honoured to be aboard!”

For his part, Tom Brevoort said, “It’s a chance to give a leg up to the next generation of talent, and possibly pave the way in some small manner for great works yet to come.”

Full details of all participants are attached.

The Initiative is an offshoot of the long-running Eagle Awards to which their founder Mike Conroy is serving as a consultant and publicist. Discussing the initial reaction to the project, he said, “I’m elated that so many of comicdom’s top professionals have got behind what Barry and my daughter are trying to achieve.

“They’ve already got writers, artists, editors, academics, convention organisers and UK small press publishers on board but want to expand the panel beyond America and Great Britain,” he continued. “Before judging commences next year, I know they plan to add European, African and Asian judges, including many who have worked outside the US/UK establishment so that the entries can be evaluated from a truly worldwide perspective.

“Sequential art is an international language. It’s only fitting that we should try to incorporate as many points of view as possible. The Initiative is ultimately a showcase for the entrant’s storytelling abilities and not every country approaches narrative in the same way,” he concluded.

For further details on the Initiative, a full list of judges and complete submission guidelines, go to http://www.eaglesinitiative.com/. For press enquiries, contact director Barry Renshaw: editor@enginecomics.co.uk. For further details on the Eagle Awards, contact Cassandra Conroy: eagleawards@gmail.com.

ABOUT THE EAGLES INITIATIVE:
Launched in May 2010, the Eagles Initiative provides a unique platform from which the next generation of writers and artists can promote their storytelling ability in an increasingly competitive market. The brainchild of Barry Renshaw, the Initiative is an unprecedented global talent search, entrants will be asked to submit an original self-contained illustrated story. The winner will be awarded a £1,000 cash prize; the runner up will win £500 with the third place submission being given £250. All three stories are to be included in the Initiative Anthology, which will be released as a print publication and in multiple languages across the digital media.

LONGRUNNING COMICBOOK AWARDS LAUNCHES WORLDWIDE TALENT SEARCH

THE EAGLE Awards committee is to offer untried talent a chance to demonstrate their abilities before a global audience.

Unveiled at last weekend’s Bristol International Comics and Small Press Expo, the Eagles Initiative provides a unique platform from which the next generation of writers and artists can promote their storytelling ability in an increasingly competitive market.

"I've always thought the Eagles could take a far more progressive and proactive role in the comics industry, especially within the UK which has such an untapped and unsupported pool of talent," explains Initiative director Barry Renshaw. "When I was asked to rebrand the Eagle Awards themselves last year, I pitched the idea of the Initiative to the committee and it soon snowballed into something far more expansive."

Eagle Awards chair Cassandra Conroy commented, "When Barry came to me with the idea I thought it was the best way to expand and relaunch the Eagles brand; considering the Eagles receive global recognition I believed this would help the industry discover new talent not just from here and the USA, but from places we wouldn't perhaps expect."

In what is an unprecedented global talent search, entrants will be asked to submit an original self-contained illustrated story. The thousands of projected entries will be assessed by a hand-picked jury of comics readers, which will present a final dozen to the panel of judges comprising many of the comics industry's top talents. Among those who have already agreed to participate are Peter Bagge, Karen Berger, Chris Claremont, David Finch, Dave Gibbons, Geoff Johns, Gilbert Shelton, Jeff Smith, Bryan Talbot, Ethan Van Sciver, Mark Waid and Brian Wood.

The judges will select a top three from the final 12 with the winner be awarded a £1,000 cash prize. The runner up will win £500 with the third place submission being given £250. All three stories are to be included in the Initiative Anthology, which will be released as a print publication and in multiple languages across the digital media.

"The Initiative is the first stage in a several year plan to reform the Eagles into a tool for developing new talent, for educating young people about the potential in the medium, and to help connect the many disparate elements of the comics industry together," added Renshaw. "As an example, we have creators, editors, publishers, journalists, festival organisers, distributors and academics from across the world among our judges.”

Established as an annual event and with the emphasis very much on storytelling, the inaugural competition aspect gets underway on July 1, 2010, when the Initiative will open for submissions.

Expressing his support for the Eagle Initiative, BOOM! Studios editor-in-chief Mark Waid said, “This medium is nothing without new talent, young blood, and fresh perspectives.

“It's our responsibility to nurture the next generation of creators and share what we've learned – and, in return, learn from and be energised by them. I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and get into this,” added Waid whose numerous writing credits include Kingdom Come, The Flash, Impulse, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Irredeemable.

A fellow judge, former Wonder Woman and Avengers artist Mike Deodato Jr said, “Getting a foot in the door of any business, in addition to talent and skills, is often a matter of ‘who you know’ – or, more important, who knows you. Some people do it through attending art schools. Others are lucky enough to land savvy agents who teach as well as trawl for jobs. Many don't get such opportunities. If the Eagles Initiative can get more fresh talent into the sights of editors and fans, that's a great thing – for the talent in particular and for our industry in general.”

ABOUT BARRY RENSHAW:
Barry Renshaw has been an active creator in the UK independent comics industry for over a decade, as publisher of his own Engine Comics imprint, the award winning Redeye Magazine, and the popular How to Self Publish - A Rough Guide, as well as running or appearing at various workshops, seminars and panels over the years. Megan Kelso’s ARTICHOKE TALES at Fantagraphics Bookstore on June 12

May 26, 2010 – Seattle, WA. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts an art exhibition and book launch party for Seattle-based cartoonist Megan Kelso’s new graphic novel ARTICHOKE TALES on Saturday, June 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

A graduate of alternative cartoonist breeding ground The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, Megan Kelso burst onto the comics scene in the early 90s with her provocative self-published zine Girlhero. She has since proved herself a master of the cartoon short story with Queen of the Black Black (1998) and The Squirrel Mother (2006), in addition to the weekly serial “Watergate Sue” published in the New York Times Magazine (2007).

ARTICHOKE TALES is a coming of age story about a young girl whose family is caught between the two warring sides of a civil war. Kelso’s visual storytelling, combining delicate line work with rhythmic page compositions, creates a dramatic tension between intimate character studies and the unflinching depiction of the consequences of war, lending cohesion and resonance to a generational epic. The widespread critical acclaim afforded Kelso’s previous work makes Artichoke Tales one of the most eagerly anticipated graphic novels of 2010.

The reception on Saturday, June 12 coincides with the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic industrial arts district. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street at Airport Way S. in the heart of Georgetown. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110. FROM THE MIND OF KURT BUSIEK
HE’S BACK FROM THE DEAD!
BOOM! STUDIOS
PRESENTS
DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS
A GRIPPING NEW ONGOING HORROR SERIES
OUT THIS AUGUST!

They bought him as a powerful asset,
but he’ll become their most powerful adversary!

May 27, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – This August, BOOM! Studios debuts a new ongoing horror series sure to make your blood run cold, DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS. Kurt Busiek, along with acclaimed writer Daryl Gregory and sensational artist Scott Godlewski, take you through the dark corridors of the corporate American boardroom and show you vampires aren’t the only kinds of bloodsuckers!

“Dracula's a character who's always fascinated me,” says series creator Kurt Busiek, “and getting a chance to build something firmly rooted in Dracula's real-world (and Stoker-novel) history, but with a very modern edge, is the kind of creative challenge I love. It's the world's greatest vampire against the corporate world -- and there's no easy way to tell who's the real villain, and who's the hero. I'm thrilled to be working with Daryl, Scott and BOOM! on this. Putting it together feels like the early days of working on CONAN, and I think the results are going to be a real treat for readers.”

DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS tells the story of a powerful, predatory corporation that acquires a valuable asset…Dracula! They think they own him, but no one can own the Son of the Dragon. There's a monster in their midst that puts Hannibal Lecter to shame--and he plans to gain his freedom in blood.

It's bloodsuckers vs. bloodsucker, as Busiek brings an incredibly modern spin to the Dracula mythos. Joining Busiek is award-winning author Daryl Gregory (PANDEMONIUM) and rising star artist Scott Godlewski (CODEBREAKERS). The epic journey starts here, so don't miss the debut issue of DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS, the next breakout ongoing series from BOOM! Studios! Featuring covers by fan-favorite THE NOCTURNALS artist Dan Brereton, and Ron Salas!

"The collective raw storytelling talent between Kurt and Daryl is boundless," said BOOM! Studios Managing Editor Matt Gagnon. "Readers should be prepared for a cracking horror story that's intense, arresting, and explores the nuances between good and evil. Dracula is back from the dead, and in very good hands!"

DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS is written by Kurt Busiek (SUPERMAN, AVENGERS, IRON MAN) and Daryl Gregory (PANDEMONIUM) with art by red-hot artist Scott Godlewski (CODEBREAKERS). Issue one ships with two covers by Dan Brereton and Ron Salas in a 50/50 split and a 1-in-10 incentive cover. This title ships in August and caries a Diamond code of JUN100841.

Bloom County Vol 2 Debuts on
NY Times Best Seller List

Second installment of acclaimed series features Ted Koppel introduction

San Diego, CA (May 21, 2010) – The wildly successful return of Opus, Binkley, Bill the Cat and the entire cast of Bloom County continues with the debut of Bloom County: The Complete Library, Volume Two at fourth on the New York Times Best Seller list. In Volume Two, creator Berkeley Breathed offers even more funny and insightful commentary than in the first volume, while context pages help fans recapture the glory of the 1980s.

“Ha, fooled them again!” exclaimed Breathed. “Seriously, I'm happy people still enjoy this stuff. Surprised, but happy.”

Beginning with September 27, 1982, Bloom County: The Complete Library, Volume Two offers every daily and Sunday through July 1, 1984, most reproduced from Breathed’s personal archives of original art. Kicking off this second installment, renowned journalist Ted Koppel takes readers on a brief journey back to the Reagan years and reflects on the strips he shared with Opus in his introduction.

“What’s really astounding to me is the freshness of this material after so many years” said editor Scott Dunbier. “The events in these pages are right out of today’s headlines—the economy, politics, even Michael Jackson! But, most importantly, we see them all through Breathed’s own unique perspective, which is the true joy of Bloom County.”

Bloom County: The Complete Library Volume Two features the introduction of Binkley’s anxiety closet and boy genius Oliver Wendell Jones, as well as the fondly remembered death of the Bill the Cat storyline.

Bloom County: The Complete Library Volume Two is published by IDW under its imprint Eisner award-winning imprint, the Library of American Comics. Bloom County: The Complete Library series is edited by Dunbier and designed by Dean Mullaney.

Bloom County: The Complete Library Volume Two ($39.99; 304 pages; hardcover) is now available in stores. Diamond order code FEB10 1005; ISBN 978-160010-583-8.
