FANTAGRAPHICS ACQUIRES LOST ‘GRAPHIC NOVEL’ BY WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS & ARTIST MALCOLM McNEILL

SEATTLE, WA, SEPT. 9, 2010 --- Fantagraphics Books is proud to announce the acquisition of the only graphic novel written by — and possibly the last unseen work of his to be published — the innovative Beat writer and Naked Lunch author, William S. Burroughs. This lost masterpiece, Ah Pook Is Here, created in collaboration with artist Malcolm McNeill in the 1970s, will be published in the summer of 2011 as a spectacularly packaged two-volume, hinged set, along with Observed While Falling, McNeill’s memoir documenting his collaboration with one of America’s most iconic authors.

Ah Pook Is Here first appeared in 1970 under the title The Unspeakable Mr. Hart as a monthly comic strip written by Burroughs and drawn by the British cartoonist and painter Malcolm McNeil in the English magazine Cyclops. When the publication folded, Burroughs and McNeill decided to develop the project into a full-length, Word/Image novel (the term ‘graphic novel’ had not yet been coined). Burroughs was 56 at the time, McNeill 23.

The book was conceived as a single painting in which text and images were combined in whatever form seemed appropriate to the narrative. It was conceived as 120 continuous pages that would ‘fold out.’ Such a book was, at the time, unprecedented, and no publisher was willing to take a chance and publish a ‘graphic novel.’ Burroughs and McNeill finally abandoned the project after collaborating on it for 7 years.

“It is singularly appropriate that after championing literate comics and the graphic novel form for over 30 years, Fantagraphics Books should bring a literary collaboration between one of America’s most distinctive writers and his exemplary hand-chosen artist to light,” says Fantagraphics Publisher and acquiring editor Gary Groth.

Ah Pook Is Here is a consideration of time with respect to the differing perceptions of the ancient Maya and that of the current Western mindset. It was Burroughs’ contention that both of these views result in systems of control in which the elite perpetuate its agendas at the expense of the people. They make time for themselves and through increasing measures of Control attempt to prolong the process indefinitely.

John Stanley Hart is the “Ugly American” or “Instrument of Control” — a billionaire newspaper tycoon obsessed with discovering the means for achieving immortality. Based on the formulae contained in rediscovered Mayan books he attempts to create a Media Control Machine using the images of Fear and Death. By increasing Control, however, he devalues time and invokes an implacable enemy: Ah Pook, the Mayan Death God. Young mutant heroes using the same Mayan formulae travel through time bringing biologic plagues from the remote past to destroy Hart and his Judeo/Christian temporal reality.

Ah Pook Is Here was an experiment, not just in terms of the form in which the idea was expressed but the possible effects the form might produce. Burroughs was preoccupied throughout his career with the fundamental nature of words and images, particularly with regard to their ability to transcend time. In the case of Ah Pook Is Here, the rapport between artist and writer produced results that confirmed that contention. Ah Pook is the kind of extrapolative, futuristic feat of imagination that a reader would expect from the author of Nova Express and The Ticket That Exploded — a mind-boggling tour de force, dramatizing outré theories with a science fiction patina.

The second book in the set is Observed While Falling, written by Malcolm McNeill, an account of the personal and creative interaction that defined the collaboration between the writer and the artist, the events surrounding it, and the reasons for its ultimate demise. McNeill describes his growing friendship with Burroughs and how their personal relationship affected their creative partnership. The book is written with insight and humor, and liberally sprinkled with the kind of the hilarious anecdotes one would expect working with a writer as original and eccentric as William S. Burroughs. It confirms the prescience of Ah Pook Is Here with respect to the contemporary graphic novel; Burroughs' exploration of the artistic potential of combining words and images was a revelation to the artist. The book offers new insights into Burroughs’ working methods as well as how the two explored the possibilities of words and images working together to form the ambitious literary hybrid that they didn’t know, at the time, was a harbinger of the 21st century’s “graphic novel.”

“Fantagraphics is honored to bring this major work into print and to publish what is quite possibly the last great work from one of America’s most original prose stylists,” added Groth. “Burroughs once said that ‘The purpose of writing is to make it happen.’ We are proud to make Ah Pook Is Here finally happen.”

Fantagraphics Books (www.fantagraphics.com) has been the world’s leading publisher of comics and graphic novels since 1976, with titles by R. Crumb, Charles Schulz, Joe Sacco, Daniel Clowes and many others. In 2007, the company launched its prose division, which books by Alexander Theroux (Laura Warholic), Monte Shultz (This Side of Jordan), and Stephen Dixon (What Is All This?).
UTOPIA BY ANY OTHER NAME
Marc Guggenheim's new ongoing series from Image Comics now titled HALCYON

Berkeley, CA - 9 September 2010 - What happens when the never-ending battle for truth and justice ends? Marc Guggenheim (Amazing Spider-Man, Resurrection) answers this question and more in HALCYON -- titled Utopian when announced during Comic-Con International and in the September PREVIEWS -- a new series from Image Comics.

A seasoned comic book writer, Guggenheim has also worked on high-profile projects such as the upcoming Green Lantern movie and No Ordinary Family, a new ABC series that stars Michael Chiklis. Created in collaboration with Tara Butters (TV's Reaper), artist Ryan Bodenheim (RED MASS FOR MARS), and Collider Entertainment's Alisa Tager (Serenity), the revolutionary first issue of HALCYON will be in stores this November.

"We've been immensely gratified by all the buzz around, and interest in, this project after we announced it as Utopian at San Diego Comic-Con," says Guggenheim, "and I'm hopeful people will be just as excited about the new title."

From Image Comics and Collider Entertainment comes the next quantum leap forward in superheroes: HALCYON. The groundbreaking new series dares to ask: What happens when the superheroes win? What happens once there is no crime, no war? The heroes of HALCYON achieve their final victory only to face their greatest challenge ever.

HALCYON #1 (SEPT100433), a full-color 32-page comic book for $2.99, will be in stores November 10, 2010.

STAN'S BACK

STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER #1 AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER TODAY!

MARK WAID JOINS STAN LEE TO REWRITE HISTORY THIS NOVEMBER WITH
THE TRAVELER

MAN OUT OF TIME

COVERS BY SCOTT CLARK, CHAD HARDIN AND JOE BENITEZ
DRAWN BY CHAD HARDIN

The second of three new ongoing series from
Stan Lee and BOOM! Studios!

Don't miss STAN LEE'S SOLDIER ZERO
in October
and
STAN LEE'S STARBORN this December!

September 2nd, 2010 - Los Angeles, CA – BOOM! Studios and POW! Entertainment announced today that STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER #1 is available to pre-order. Debuting this November, STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER is a new ongoing series written by IRREDEEMABLE's Mark Waid and drawn by AMAZING SPIDER-MAN's Chad Hardin.

STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER features a mysterious new superhero with time-traveling powers who battles the Split-Second Men, super-powered assassins from the future.

"Stan Lee and Mark Waid working together? You can't beat that! Both are legends in our industry, and now both are bringing THE TRAVELER to life. There is no hype that can overstate the power of these two comic book industry titans joining forces to bring fans a brand new superhero comic book like no other you have ever seen," said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. "Add an artist like Chad Hardin to the mix, and you have comic book gold, my friends! I can't wait for fans to experience THE TRAVELER."

The November debut of STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER #1 will mark the second of three titles debuting from Stan Lee and BOOM! Studios with STAN LEE'S SOLDIER ZERO #1 hitting store shelves in October and STAN LEE'S STARBORN #1 shipping this December. All three titles were announced by Stan Lee during a press conference at Comic-Con International this past summer.

Debuting in October, one month before THE TRAVELER, is STAN LEE'S SOLDIER ZERO. This ongoing series, written by DOCTOR WHO and ACTION COMICS scribe Paul Cornell with art by SUPERMAN artist Javier Pina, tells the story of a wheelchair-bound astronomy teacher who finds himself in a freak accident that bonds him with an alien weapon of war.

Hitting shelves this December is STAN LEE'S STARBORN. The third of the three ongoing series is written by iZOMBIE's Chris Roberson — who recently charted as a New York Times best-selling author — featuring art by SPIDER-MAN's Khary Randolph. STAN LEE'S STARBORN tells the story of a regular guy who discovers he's the heir to an intergalactic empire, putting him the center of a war between five alien races.

The revelation this past March of Stan Lee presenting this series of three superhero titles at BOOM! followed on the heels of a viral marketing campaign announcing “Stan’s Back” that hit the internet in late February. The L.A. Times’ Hero Complex & L.A. Times’ Brand-X also got in on the action, running the “Stan’s Back” campaign in print and on their respective websites. All the banner ads linked back to www.stansback.com, a site which had only the “Stan’s Back” logo and nothing else disclosing additional information.

For one week, the internet was in a frenzy, with comic fans everywhere trying to figure out what the “Stan’s Back” teaser campaign meant. This culminated with the announcement that Stan Lee is back, this time at BOOM! Studios, creating a line of three new superheroes.

Fans then had to wait until the press conference at Comic-Con International this summer for POW! Entertainment and BOOM! Studios to reveal the characters, series and creative teams for the three superhero titles. Attended by Stan Lee, Paul Cornell, Mark Waid, Chris Roberson and BOOM! Studios Publisher Ross Richie, the announcement garnered press from all over the world including news outlets like CNN, Wired and covered extensively by one of the biggest news sites in China and all over the globe.

STAN LEE'S THE TRAVELER #1 solicitation appears in this months' issue of Diamond Previews letting fans know about this not-to-be missed publishing event of the year.

Open DOORWAYS with George R.R. Martin

All-new comic series from award winning fantasy author

Coming in November

[DOORWAYS #1 cover]San Diego, CA (August 27, 2010) – Acclaimed novelist and Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of The Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin, has teamed up with IDW Publishing, to release an all-new miniseries, entitled DOORWAYS. Based on his pilot script for a television series that never was, DOORWAYS offers Martin’s science-fiction genius in an initial four-issue series. Martin and artist Stefano Martino bring this reality-bending tale to life starting in November.

"DOORWAYS was the great 'what if' of my career, the television pilot that was right on the edge of being greenlit to series... but in the end was not. I spent a year and a half of my life with Tom and Cat, writing about them, thinking about them, making plans for their adventures. It broke my heart when it all came to naught,” said Martin. “But now, at last, thanks to IDW and the talent of Stefano Martino, the world will get to share some of those adventures. And even better, the comics format will allow us to do things with the story and the visuals that we would never have been able to do on television! I couldn't be more excited."

Every issue of DOORWAYS treats Dr. Tom Mason, and fans, to the very definition of terrifyingly incredible, as doors open to worlds that are twisted mirror of ours. Said DOORWAYS editor Mariah Huehner, “One of the most interesting is a world with no oil. Which is pretty timely.”

DOORWAYS follows Dr. Tom Mason on a multi-dimensional journey as he tries to solve the mystery of Cat, a strange, feral young woman who pops up in his E.R. one night, injured and barely able to communicate, except by ripping off limbs.

Wearing rags that nearly disintegrate, Dr. Tom is drawn in the girl’s strange fears, until he discovers that “Cat” is a person of interest to the government, and a very odd group of “people” that don’t seem to be from around here… “here” being our dimension…

“Working with George on this project is a lot of fun,” continued Huehner. “It’s a dark sci-fi/fantasy, that’s not unlike the Twilight Zone in terms of taking an ordinary person and suddenly confronting them with very bizarre events and people. Tom is a total “good” guy, loves his girlfriend, likes his job, and just wants to help people. But when Cat shows up she turns his comfortable world upside down.”

Artist Rebecca Wrigley will provide incentive covers for each issue of the initial DOORWAYS series.

George R.R. Martin’s DOORWAYS #1 (of 4, 32 pages, full color, $3.99) will be available in stores in November. Diamond order code SEP10 0362.

Paul Pope's THB: Comics from Mars #2 Debuts at Baltimore Comic-Con!

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - August 26, 2010 - AdHouse Books is proud to announce the Baltimore Comic-Con Exclusive Debut of THB: Comics from Mars #2 by Paul Pope.

This comic continues to add to the epic tale that is THB. It contains 6.5 stories (or thereabouts) that take you further into the world of HR Watson and all the androids, Martians, and cartoon characters that populate the red planet -- still larger than life and just as sweet.

"This comic is the 'sister' to the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con THB: Comics from Mars #1, and we could not be happier than to be releasing it at the Baltimore show," said Chris Pitzer, Adhouse Books Publisher. "It was all very last minute, but you wouldn't know that from the quality of the stories."

Paul Pope, creator of THB, been called the "Comics Destroyer", the "Jim Morrison of comics", and "Comics' Petit Prince". His work has won multiple Eisner Awards and has been part of a major collection of DKNY.

Paul's return to the Baltimore Comic-Con this year features a panel discussion on Sunday from 3-4 titled: PAUL POPE VS. BOB SCHRECK - A CAGED EVENT. Don't miss this satisfaction-guaranteed, fists-a-flying blood match by joining award-winning multi-talented storyteller, Paul Pope, in an examination of his creative process and how he suffers under the heel of his terrifying editor.

ADAM GREEN'S "HATCHET II" SLASHES ITS WAY INTO THEATRES KICKING OFF THE 2010 HALLOWEEN HORROR MOVIE SEASON

AMC Theatres ® To Release The Film Nationwide Oct 1 -- The Widest Release of An Unrated Genre Film In More Than 25 Years

"HATCHET II" Cast Features Cavalcade Of Horror Movie Icons Including Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN), Tony Todd (CANDYMAN), R.A. Mihailoff (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) and Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13th) reprising his role as serial killer Victor Crowley

Orland Park (IL) (August 24, 2010) - Dark Sky Films, a division ofMPI Media Group, announced today that in anticipation of the upcoming Halloween horror movie season, Adam Green's HATCHET II will be distributed in theaters across the country beginning Oct 1. The film will be released without an MPAA rating, marking the widest release of an unrated genre film in more than 25 years.

AMC Theatres, under its AMC independent program, will be exhibiting HATCHET II in the top 20 markets across the country. Vitagraph Films is serving as theatrical distributor.

The announcement regarding the HATCHET II release was made jointly by Adam Green with MPI Media Group's Senior Vice President of Acquisitions Greg Newman.

A ferociously fun tribute to the old-school horror sensation slasher movies of the 80's, HATCHET II is the follow-up to the popular original film, which was released theatrically in 2007 and became a sleeper-hit, gaining a wide following on DVD. The cast of HATCHET II features a cavalcade of horror movie icons including Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN) and Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13th), reprising his role as serial killer Victor Crowley. Also starring are Tony Todd (CANDYMAN) and R.A. Mihailoff (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).

HATCHET II is having its world premiere this week in London at Fright Fest, the UK's premiere horror and fantasy film festival.

Director Adam Green said, "Having a movie as graphically over the top as HATCHET II come out in major theatres unrated is an absolute dream come true -- not only for the genre fans but for the entire make-up effects crew who normally have to watch their amazing achievements get sliced and diced for theatrical release. This is an important event for the horror genre and I hope the real horror fans support HATCHET II and help change the way genre films are released theatrically from this day forward. Kudos to Dark Sky Films and AMC theaters for truly honoring the spirit of old school American horror and doing this right. Gorehounds won't know what hit them!"

Dark Sky Films' Newman added, "We are thrilled that audiences will not have to wait for a director's cut or unrated version of Adam Green's HATCHET II. On October 1st fans will have the opportunity to see Hatchet II in theaters exactly as it was intended to be seen: full-on, uncut and uncensored! We hope that this unrated release of HATCHET II marks a new trend in providing an uncompromised theatrical experience for genre film lovers nationwide."

"Our AMC independent program embraces diverse storytelling of all types," said AMC Theatres' Vice President, Specialty & Alternative Content, Nikkole Dneson-Randolph. "Bringing a story like HATCHET II to our guests is a natural fit during this time of year and we're excited to share the filmmakers' vision on-screen in its intended state."

HATCHET II TRAILER 1

ABOUT HATCHET II

Just as the 80's had their signature murderous maniacs-HALLOWEEN's Michael Myers of Haddonfield and FRIDAY THE 13th's Jason Voorhees of Camp Crystal Lake- the original HATCHET marked the arrival of the latest and most lethal of the genre's stalking murderers: Victor Crowley, a crazed backwoods killer stalking the bayous of New Orleans.

HATCHET II picks up right where the 2007 original film ends, as Marybeth (Danielle Harris fromHALLOWEEN) escapes from the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder from FRIDAY THE 13th). Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact her revenge against Victor Crowley.

Second Annual Baltimore Comic-Con Auction
On Sunday afternoon at 3:00, please join us in panel room 301-303 to see our annual art auction. The Auction will feature work by this year's guests of the Baltimore Comic-Con. Not everyone can get in line early enough to get a sketch from an artist at a convention, and this is your chance to walk away with a memory from the show. The material will be on display throughout the weekend in the convention hall.

THIS JUST IN : Our auction will be hosted by the cool guys from the Comic Book Diner podcast, artists Rich Faber, John Gallagher, and Jamar Nicholas, along with their pal and Perhapanauts co-creator Todd Dezago. They promise to make it a fun, lively event. Come on out and join the fun.

Ford Offers Test Drives, Giveaways, and Donation to the Hero Initiative

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - August 24, 2010 - With its recent release to customers and dealerships across the country, Ford will feature its all-new Fiesta at Baltimore Comic-Con in the Baltimore Convention Center on August 28th and August 29th. Conference goers will have the opportunity to test drive the vehicle throughout the conference, as well as take part in Ford-related activites at the event.

Ford will have three 2011 Fiestas available for test drive outside in addition to a Fiesta product display adjacent to the Fiesta Movement Mission Control Vehicle inside the Convention Center. Convention goers will also have the opportunity to enter a raffle for the chance to win one of two copies of the final issue of Ex Machina signed by creator Brian K. Vaughn.

In addition, Ford will be presenting a check for $5,000 on Saturday to the Hero Initiative, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping comic book creators in need. Founded in late 2000 by a group of comic book and trade publishers, the Hero Initiative provides help to former comic book creators who are in need of basic quality of life support - including healthcare, rent, or employment.

The check to the Hero Initiative will be presented on behalf of Ford Motor Company, as well as Brian K. Vaughan, principal writer on the series Lost, as well as writer for most major DC and Marvel comic book characters.

"This is the second group we've worked with since the start of Comic-Con season, so we're thrilled to again be helping such a worthy organization," said Patrick Dorrington of Ford. "Obviously we're excited that people will be seeing the Fiesta, but the Hero Initiative is doing incredible work on behalf of comic book writers, which is what makes this such a great collaboration."

Fiesta Rollout

With 15 class-exclusive technologies and projected best-in-class highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, Fiesta brings efficiency and convenience together in one package.

Fiesta is designed to be versatile, personal, and adaptable. In fact, Fiesta will deliver best-in-class convenience and connectivity with Ford segment-exclusive SYNC (R) voice-actived communications system, as well as an expressive color pallette and available graphics.
