Thanks for a Great 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con!
Join us again August 20-21, 2011!

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - November 12, 2010 - They had started lining up before dawn. By the time the doors opened at 10:00 AM (and the oppressive August heat had already taken hold), the line was wrapped around the side of the Baltimore Convention Center and snaked across the street. These fans knew something big was happening, and they wanted to be among the first in the door. Soon, they'd be face to face with some of the biggest names in the comic book industry - as well as plenty of promising talent.

It was the 11th annual Baltimore Comic-Con, and the weekend ended up being a phenomenal success.

Of course, the success wouldn't be possible without the hard work of a lot of people - and it's time to say a big "Thank You!" to everyone involved. Special thanks go to SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane, who joined us on Saturday August 28 and was, as expected, a major hit with the fans. And to our guests, exhibitors, retailers, partners, and especially the fans who continue to join us each year - THANK YOU. Without you, Baltimore Comic-Con simply wouldn't happen.

With the 11th annual Comic-Con a great success, the team is already thinking of ways to make 2011 an even bigger year for comics fans. On the calendar for August 20-21, 2011, next year's Comic-Con will feature guests you won't want to miss - we've already lined up Frank Cho (New Ultimates), David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight), Barry Kitson(Iron Man 2.0), David Petersen (Mouse Guard), Brandon Peterson (Ultimate Extinction), and Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo).

Comic-Con promoter Marc Nathan couldn't be happier with 2010's Comic-Con, but he knows the only way from here is up. "We were thrilled with the show in 2010. My team and I had a great time putting on the show, and the feedback from our partners, guests, and, most notably, the fans that came to the show has been great. Each year, we find new ways to make Comic-Con bigger and more exciting," Marc said. "2011 is going to be a very big year."

That's an exciting prospect, because this year's convention was bigger than it's ever been. Attendance was up 20% from last year, the costume contest (in its second year) was so big we had to knock down a wall to make room (where's the Hulk when you need him?), and aspiring artists packed the room for a highly successful Artists' Workshop led by comic book legends Klaus Janson and Howard Chaykin. For our fifth year running, we hosted the Harvey Awards, and we're already looking forward to our sixth year!

We can only imagine what's in store for next year, so mark your calendars now! Details on guests, the Harvey Awards, industry exclusives, and programming leading up to the show can always be found at our website, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and ComicSpace pages.

AMC RESURRECTS “THE WALKING DEAD

FOR A SECOND SEASON

Biggest Series in Cable History

Among Adults 18-49

Network Greenlights 13-Episode Season of Original Hit Series

Biggest Global Original Series Debut on Fox International Channels

(New York, NY – November 8, 2010) AMC announced today the renewal of “The Walking Dead” for a 13-episode second season. Since debuting Sunday, October 31, “The Walking Dead” has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18-49 than any other show in the history of cable television.

Today’s announcement also includes Fox International Channels’ (FIC) global renewal for a second season, following record-breaking premiere ratings in 120 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. “The Walking Dead” was the highest-rated original series premiere ever to air on FIC simultaneously worldwide.

“The ‘Dead’ has spread!” said Charlie Collier, President, AMC. “No other cable series has ever attracted as many Adults 18-49 as ‘The Walking Dead.’ This reaffirms viewers’ hunger for premium television on basic cable. We are so proud to be bringing back ‘The Dead’ again, across the globe.”

Ratings Highlights for The Walking Dead - Episode 2, which premiered on AMC Sunday, 11/7:

* 10pm airing – 3.1 HH rating with over 4.7 million viewers;
* Adults 18-49 – 3.3 million viewers;
* Adults 25-54 – 2.8 million viewers;
* Men 18-49 – 2.1 million viewers.

Ratings Highlights for the The Walking Dead - Episode 1, which premiered on AMC Sunday, 10/31:

* Adults 18-49 – 3.6 million viewers;
* Adults 25-54 – 3.1 million viewers;

“I wish all programming decisions were no brainers like this one,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, SVP Scripted Programming. “‘The Walking Dead’ is a TV masterpiece on so many levels. We want at least 10 seasons, if not more. Kudos to AMC!”

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Kirkman serves as an executive producer on the project and three-time Academy Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) serves as writer, director and executive producer. Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk), chairman of Valhalla Motion Pictures, serves as Executive Producer. David Alpert from Circle of Confusion and Charles “Chic” Eglee (Dexter, The Shield, Dark Angel) serve as Executive Producers.

“The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive.

Shot on location in Atlanta, “The Walking Dead” is led by a cast that includes Lincoln (“Teachers,” Love Actually) as Rick Grimes, Jon Bernthal (“The Pacific,” The Ghost Writer) as Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies (“Prison Break”) as Lori Grimes, Laurie Holden (“The Shield,” Stephen King’s The Mist) as Andrea, Jeffrey DeMunn (Stephen King’s The Mist, The Green Mile) as Dale, Steven Yeun (“The Big Bang Theory”) as Glen, Emma Bell (The Bedford Diaries) as Amy and Chandler Riggs (Get Low) as Carl Grimes.

JOHN WILLIAMS’ VANGUARD FILMS ANNOUNCES OVERALL PRODUCING/DIRECTING DEAL WITH KUNG FU PANDA DIRECTOR JOHN STEVENSON

Former Lakeshore International President Peter Rogers Heads Up Financing and Distribution Plan For Vanguard’s Eclectic, Multi-Format Animation/Live Action Film Slate

(Santa Monica, CA; November 8, 2010) – John Williams, the original producer of Shrek and President and CEO of Vanguard Films, announced today an overall producing/directing deal with Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson. In addition, Vanguard has formed a strategic alliance with former Lakeshore International President Peter Rogers’ new company, Moviemill, to arrange financing and distribution for Vanguard's impressive projects. Vanguard comes to AFM with an eclectic production slate featuring CG, live action and CG/live action hybrids.

"I’m thrilled that Vanguard’s exciting new range of projects is attracting such top filmmakers and business partners as John Stevenson and Peter Rogers,” says Williams.

Stevenson’s first directing project for Vanguard will be the live action/CGI hybrid Alien Rock Band with musician Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) attached as a producer. Plot revolves around a garage band from Earth which journeys across the Universe to qualify for a shot at superstardom in an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. It won't be easy – the band will have to out-shred four-armed alien guitarists, face-down tentacled, punker octo-drummers, and fight snarling alien monsters – with music as its only weapon.

"I have been attracted to the slate of existing and new ideas that are coming out of Vanguard,” says Stevenson. “I have had a great time working with John Williams and the gifted creative teams involved in these projects.”

Stevenson, whose credits include such seminal animation projects as Shrek, Madagascar, and James and the Giant Peach, will also direct Vanguard’s CG-animated film Rotten Island, based on the book by Shrek author William Steig about an island where monsters reign free until a beautiful flower changes everything. Newsday called it, "A gorgeously colored picture book, full of monsters, mayhem and a message about the redeeming power of Nature.” People magazine raved, “Not since Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are has there been such a glorious nightmare of a book.”

Among the Vanguard titles that Williams and Stevenson will produce are Buzby, the world's first high speed animated romantic comedy starring fruit flies, written by Jason Mayland with Annie Award-winner Phil Robinson (Hubert's Brain) attached to direct; City of Dragons a live-action martial arts movie in the spirit of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with supernatural elements set in modern day Shanghai, written by Rob Moreland (Space Chimps), and Atomic Circus, a live-action fantasy adventure story featuring a fast-talking con-man in a post-apocalyptic world, written by Athena Gam.

During Peter Rogers' seven-year tenure as President of Lakeshore International, the sales and distribution arm of Lakeshore Entertainment, the company produced, financed and distributed over 40 films including the Academy Award™ winner Million Dollar Baby, Runaway Bride, The Exorcism of Emily Rose,

Autumn in New York, Crank, The Gift, Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies. Before forming Moviemill, Rogers was most recently President of Omega Entertainment, whose film, Conviction, has Oscar-watchers buzzing about the performances of Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell.

“Vanguard is particularly adept at painting a bull's-eye on entertainment properties that resonate with global audiences,” says Rogers. "I can't imagine a better pairing than the prowess of the Vanguard production team and the creative and technical firepower of a filmmaker such as John Stevenson. They are a great match.”

Vanguard Films is a leading independent animation company and the producer of the independently financed films Space Chimps, Valiant and Happily N'ever After, as well as the live action films Seven Years in Tibet and The Tuxedo starring Jackie Chan. Vanguard’s On the Road, a collaboration with American Zoetrope directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), has just wrapped principal photography. Its rock ‘n’ roll comedy film Vinyl, shot on location in Wales, is co-written (with Jim Cooper) and directed by Sara Sugarman (Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen). The film is now in post-production.

About Homestar Runner

Homestar Runner was conceived in 1996 by Mike Chapman and friend Craig Zobel as an idea for a weird kids' book they would only make a few photocopies of for friends. In 2000, Mike and brother Matt dusted off the idea and launched HomestarRunner.com, featuring the Flash-animated exploits of the characters. Since 2002, they have updated with new cartoons almost every week including the popular feature 'Strong Bad Email' in which fans get their emails answered by the cartoon's charming antagonist, Strong Bad. Mike and Matt write and animate the cartoons with Matt and Missy Palmer providing voices for the characters. The site has been featured and mentioned in the New York Times, Wired Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Time, The Wall Street Journal, and, most importantly, two songs from the site were featured in the Guitar Hero series.

About Sam & Max

Sam & Max is based on the indie comics by Steve Purcell. Sam is a six-foot dog in a baggy suit sporting a trombone-sized .44 hand-cannon. SPIKE TV IS IN SEARCH OF THE WORLD’S MOST LETHAL COMBATANT IN NEW REALITY SERIES

“Most Lethal” To Feature 12 of the World’s Best Special Forces Operatives in an

Array of Combat Challenges

New York, New York – November 3, 2010 - Spike TV delves into the secretive community of special ops in “Most Lethal,” a new one-hour non-scripted series in which real-life warriors from the top tiers of special operation forces faceoff in a grueling competition to determine who is the fiercest. The series will examine the shrouded world of these military mercenaries by challenging 12 of the most dangerous in the world to compete for the title of “Most Lethal.”

Using advanced technology to analyze the weaponry, training operations, and tactics, the series will be an authentic look at this covert world rarely explored on television. The 10-episode series, produced by GRB Entertainment, will premiere on Spike in the summer 2011.

“We are bringing together twelve of the best-trained combatants in the world for the most intense reality series on television,” said Sharon Levy, Spike TV’s executive vice president of original series. “The show will arm the viewer with information on training techniques and history of the special ops that viewers can’t find anywhere else.”

The competitors on “Most Lethal,” ranging from non-active elite members of the Navy Seals to Green Berets, will have to withstand physical tests and demonstrate skills that go far beyond anything seen before in a competition show. “It’s not enough for them to be fit and strong and great with weapons,” said GRB CEO Gary R. Benz. “We’re going to test every combat skill and tactical response in the book. Then, we’re going to throw away the book and find out what they learned on the battlefield.”

The series will be filmed at state-of-the-art military facilities around the U.S. under the supervision of local evaluators and a handpicked team of top tier combat operators. The challenges are modeled on real world combat scenarios that will test everything from urban combat to evasion, from search-and-destroy to reconnaissance, and will include threat evaluation and threat elimination. Each location includes special terrain along with a unique set of combat challenges that the contestants must overcome.

Unlike existing military-based television shows, “Most Lethal” will deal with all facets of combat including the split second decisions that are critical to success and survival. Casting will begin in the coming weeks. A host will be announced at a later date.

“Most Lethal” was created by Tim Prokop, GRB's vice president of development, who will also produce and direct the series. GRB's international division will market both the foreign sales of the series as well as the format rights. Sharon Levy is Spike TV’s executive vice president of original series and Tim Duffy is vice president of original programming for Spike TV.

Microcosm Publishing Announces Release of New York Travel Guide: The Zinester's Guide to New York

In the tradition of our DIY city guide The Zinester's Guide to Portland, we're proud to announce our brand-new New York City version! The Zinester's Guide to NYC is a top-to-bottom, on-the-cheap, warts-and-all exploration of the city that never sleeps. The book, compiled by Ayun Halliday, will be out on Nov 15.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Whether you're looking for scam-able coffee or a place to grab a Japanese breakfast, art supplies, volunteer opportunities, or a 4-story Korean bathhouse, the Zinester's Guide to New York has it all. Anecdotal and opinionated, the ZG2NYC has listings from over twenty New York-based zine publishers, toiling under the benevolent umbrella of Ayun Halliday (Chief Primatologist of The East Village Inky zine, author of No Touch Monkey!) “The best way to experience the city is to really participate in it," Halliday says. "Why watch the parade when you can march in it? People should know that they can guest bartend, play bike polo in Sara Roosevelt Park, create a public park in a parking space on National Park(ing) Day, and submit the 5-minute movies they shoot on the boardwalk to next year's Coney Island Film Festival.” Like our Portland guide, the pocket-size NYC book is divided into illustrated, user friendly sections (Bars! Pizza! Historic buildings! Veggie options! Open mics! Craft supplies! The keys to low-budget NYC romance!) that give up the goods for first-timers and native New Yorkers alike.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (November 1, 2010) – All-ages comics and graphic novels are still a rarity in publishing. As comics and graphic novels have skewed to an older and more mature readership, relatively few titles are currently being published that appeal to younger readers. And, of the currently available titles, very few feature girls as the story's protagonists. With this in mind, Von Allan, an Ottawa-based artist and graphic novelist, is pleased to announce that he has partnered with the world's largest distributor of comics and graphic novels, Diamond Comic Distributors, to present his all-ages fantasy graphic novel, “Stargazer,” to the direct market.

“Comics and graphic novels have appeared to skew toward older readers over the past twenty years or so,” said Allan. “While there's nothing really wrong with that, it's a shame there aren't more age-appropriate graphic novels for younger readers, especially when you consider the history of the medium. Characters like Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. all had a very diverse readership back in the 1930s and 1940s. Boys and girls embraced these characters in a way that rarely happens in today's publishing climate. I think that's a problem; when readers are not introduced to comics at a young age, it's much harder for them to embrace the medium as they grow older.”

“Comics and graphic novels are such a wonderful form of storytelling and I believe it's very important to reach out as much as possible to younger readers,” added Allan. “I think this situation is actually made worse by the lack of stories featuring girls as the main characters. While there are a strong female protagonists in young adult fiction, in comics this is far less prevalent. Part of the reason I wanted to create “Stargazer” is to challenge all of these norms. I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Diamond on the distribution of the book and thrilled to note that they've given the book their stamp of approval by 'spotlighting' it in the catalogue. It's very exciting."

“Stargazer” is the story of Marni, a young girl dealing with the recent death of her grandmother. That death has left Marni emotionally devastated and struggling to cope. Granny Hitchins was a wonderfully curious woman, responsible for giving her granddaughter a rich sense of imagination and adventure, as well as an old and mysterious "Artifact." While not a replacement, the Artifact is nonetheless a treasured memento for Marni after her grandmother's death. With the love and support of her two best friends, Sophie and Elora, and the magic of the Artifact to comfort her, Marni is just beginning to cope with the loss of her beloved grandmother when her life takes an abrupt and strange turn. While the girls are examining the Artifact on a backyard camping trip, the object suddenly takes on a life of its own, transporting the three friends and their tent to a strange and distant world. After summoning their courage, Marni, Sophie and Elora venture out to explore their alien surroundings, where they find a surreal world containing a robot, a mysterious far-off tower, and an illusive yet terrifying monster. Scared, yet buoyed by the stories and songs that they've heard while growing up, the three girls gather their meagre supplies and head out into the wilderness, determined to find a way home. A magical tale with the most unlikeliest of heroes, “Stargazer” is an exploration of friendship, loss, and hope. By turns terrifying, poignant, and humorous, “Stargazer” is part fairytale, part science fiction, and part adventure story.

“Stargazer Volume One” has a Diamond order code of NOV101057, an ISBN of 978-0-9781237-2-7, a suggested retail price of $14.95 US/$15.95 CDN, and is 122 pages in length.

store merchandise and prizes. The drawing will take place at
comic-themed party held on Saturday December 4th in Bucktown at the

many great stores in Chicago!”

“As far as any of us can recall, this is the first time something like
this has been done in the Chicago comic book community,” says owner of
Third Coast Comics, Terry Gant, “I mean, how many other events have
you seen where you’re actively encouraged to go a store’s competitors
by one of the stores? This is both experimental & needed for our
community and it's the sort of event we love planning.” Chicago
Comics general manager Eric Thornton sees more than just the social
aspects, "Chicago Comics is very excited to be involved in this event.
Your local comic shop is as vital to many people and neighborhoods as
your local bar, barber, bakery, or bodega. Each of these stores
represents small business and a brick and mortar entrepreneurial
spirit that is hard to find in our corporatized landscape today.
Supporting your local comic shop keeps a precious art-form alive and

GLASS EYE PIX Launches Genre Audio Program

“TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE”
Website goes live; first episode & promo video available 26 October
Episode ONE: MAN ON THE LEDGE by Joe Maggio starring Vincent D’Onofrio

26 October 2010 — From Glass Eye Pix, the maverick production company responsible for recent independent genre movies THE LAST WINTER, I SELL THE DEAD, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, as well as the forthcoming STAKE LAND and THE INNKEEPERS comes a new venture in the macabre.

Inspired by the classic radio shows of Alfred Hitchcock, Boris Karloff , Peter Lorre, and Orson Welles, TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE is a half hour downloadable audio program featuring notable thespians including Vincent D’Onofrio, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm, Shea Wigham, James Le Gros, Joe Swanberg, and Kevin Corrigan.

Hosted by Glass Eye Pix CEO Larry Fessenden, each thirty-minute episode is written and directed by one of today’s horror auteurs including Joe Maggio (BITTER FEAST)¸ JT Petty (THE BURROWERS, SOFT FOR DIGGING), Graham Reznick (I CAN SEE YOU, THE VIEWER), Paul Solet (GRACE), Ashley Thorpe (THE HAIRY HANDS, SCAYRECROW), Simon Rumley (THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, RED WHITE AND BLUE), Jeff Buhler (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, INSAINTARIUM), and Sarah Langan (Author of THE KEEPER, THE MISSING).

Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride by Fessenden and frequent collaborator Glenn McQuaid (I SELL THE DEAD, effects supervisor on THE ROOST and THE LAST WINTER), this project continues the mission at Glass Eye Pix to celebrate individual voices in the arts and to reassert the broad palette of moods that comprise the horror story.

Says Fessenden: “We thought it would be a great opportunity to get into production, work with some of our favorite people and meet some new ones with a project that was relatively affordable. I’ve always loved radio and audio books. We wanted to try our hand at the format. I’m amazed at what people came up with. Feels pretty special. Like addicts, we’re already looking to Season two.”

McQuaid adds: “Season One has been a tremendous pleasure to work on. Larry and I wanted to gather stories from all walks of life; let each tale stand on it's own merits, as well as complement the entire season. Listeners will be transported far and wide, from distant moons to misty moors, by stories told with a wide range of styles and sensibilities. The challenge for Larry and I, and all the filmmakers we reached out to, was to close our eyes, let go of our visual technique and concentrate purely on sound and performance.”

Never one to skimp on fanfare, Glass Eye has commissioned the wildly talented Gary Pullin to design the logo and website and a unique poster for each tale, evocative of illustrated one sheets from the 60’s or pulp comic covers from Marvel and EC. Each Tuesday for ten weeks a new episode will be unleashed, and with it, another Pullin original. All the graphics will be available for collectors through the TALES merchandise store.

Today, to celebrate the launch of this new Glass Eye Pix venture, a very special video from the notorious animator Voltaire will be released, featuring the TALES theme music by award winning composer Jeff Grace (STAKE LAND, MEEK’S CUTOFF, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL)

Rushed into release for the Halloween Season, the first episodes of TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE will only be available through the website ($1.99 by paypal or credit card), but will soon be downloadable from itunes, Amazon and other outlets. In December, all of Season One will be presented in a deluxe CD package just in time for Christmas. Plans are ongoing to get the show onto the radio where it belongs, and look for the TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE i-pad app very soon.
