ComiXology Announces Program for Retailers to Sell Digital Comics

Industry’s first digital storefront affiliate program provides roadmap for retailers to thrive in digital marketplace

New York, NY / January 27th 2011 – comiXology, the leading distributor of digital comics, announced today the industry’s first Digital Storefront Affiliate program for retailers. The program will empower comic book merchants to prosper from the sale of digital comics with a comiXology-powered store and reader. Leveraging comiXology’s technology will provide retailers the foundation for future digital initiatives as the program evolves.

The comiXology Digital Storefront Affiliate program offers retailers the opportunity to tap into comiXology’s vibrant digital marketplace with a simple integration into their existing site. These retailers will be able to offer their customers access to comiXology’s library of digital comics and integrated reader from participating publishers. Consumers will now be able to purchase digital comics online from their local comic store’s digital storefront for the first time. All digital purchases will also be compatible with the Comics by comiXology platform, providing fans the ability to enjoy their comics on their mobile devices and on the Web at their retailer’s websites by way of cross-platform synchronization.

"By having a comiXology-powered store and reader integrated with our existing new and back-issue comics website, we will provide our customers with even more access to the comics they love while increasing their loyalty to us,” said Chris Powell, General Manager and CRO of Lone Star Comics and mycomicshop.com. “Having seen comiXology’s Retailer Tools and Pull List services, we trust comiXology’s technology to help us thrive in a market where customers are interested in both print and digital comics. ComiXology will help us provide the one-stop shopping that customers are looking for.”

Participating publishers will benefit from comiXology’s Digital Storefront Affiliate program through wider distribution on the Web and by strengthening the bonds between publishers, comic stores, and fans that have so successfully made comics a major force in world culture. comiXology plans to announce participating publishers in the coming weeks.

"The comiXology digital sales and reading platform embedded directly on a retailers website is a great opportunity for retailers to participate in the digital comic business,” said David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology. “As a result, the program will create a new marketplace online for publishers and retailers to increase revenue streams while strengthening their relationships. It also marks the beginning of new way of thinking for retailers, which will ultimately lead them to taking full ownership of their digital initiatives as we continue to roll out the stages of the program.”

ICv2 recently announced a strategic agreement with comiXology to provide customer support for all comiXology’s retail initiatives including its Retailer Tools and the Digital Storefront Affiliate program. Milton Griepp, CEO of ICv2, Steinberger, and comiXology CTO and co-founder John Roberts will demo the Digital Storefront Affiliate program at the upcoming ComicsPRO conference in February.

“Comic retailers have built and nurtured the local communities that support the comics business, and it’s important that those retailers have a way to participate in and profit from the digital comics revolution,” said Roberts.“ Building on the success of our Retailer Tools, we look to expand our relationship with retailers by helping brand each digital storefront to the specific retailer, while hosting it at no cost. With a plan to integrate the Retailer Tools and Pull List, comic retailers will become a one-stop shop for all comic readers needs.”

“Digital comics can be a great tool for reaching out to new or lapsed customers, and retailers should not be afraid of this new format. Instead, they should look for ways to make the digital format complement their existing print business," Powell added.

To request more information about the Digital Storefront Affiliate program, retailers can visit http://retailers.comixology.com/digital_form/

ESCAPE INTO THE FANTASY OF NONPLAYER
Newcomer Nate Simpson Makes Monumental Debut at Image

Berkeley, CA - 25 January 2011 –

Image Comics carries on its tradition of introducing the best new talent with an all-new title from rising star Nate Simpson. Combining references to massively multi-player online roleplaying games and science fiction/fantasy mainstays with exquisite illustration, Simpson's NONPLAYER is planned as a six-issue miniseries, with the first installment out in April.

NONPLAYER is the story of Dana Stevens, a young woman who retreats from the dismal workaday world of the future into the digital fantasy realm of Jarvath, where she's a fearless warrior. Dana is not alone in her pursuits, however, and before long, her adventures begin to cat-and-mouse back and forth between the two worlds.

Prior to NONPLAYER, Simpson made video games come to life for their players in his previous job as a concept artist. After taking a year off to "learn how to make comics," though, he is quickly establishing himself as not only as a gifted illustrator, but as a storyteller with a wonderfully unique voice as well.

“A comic book is just about the most elaborate thing a person can create without assistance, which sounds like heaven to somebody who's spent fourteen years in video game development,” Simpson explained. "I've had a lot of fun putting all the nuts and bolts of this story together and figuring out how best to approach everything in terms of production, and I can't wait to share this story with people."

Added Image Publisher Eric Stephenson, "It's always a pleasure to link up with a creator as well-rounded and imaginative as Nate. Every aspect of NONPLAYER is so well-considered, it's like working with an old pro. As first timers go, Nate is one of the most impressive I've ever seen."

Indeed, Simpson has built a panoramic world through sequential art, with each interior page more lovingly executed than the last. The dual worlds of NONPLAYER are depicted with detailed rendering, whether in Dana's real world or in the lavishly real game world. The overall effect is not dissimilar to the lush artwork found in some of Europe's best and most loved comics, but with a distinct flavor all Simpson's own.

NONPLAYER, a 32-page full-color science fiction and fantasy comic will be in stores April 6, 2011, for $2.99. For more information, visit www.nonplayercomic.com.

DEBUT ISSUE OF FREAKSHOW SELLS OUT FROM APE ENTERTAINMENT

DARK SUPERHERO SAGA TAKES COMIC SHOPS BY STORM

Ape Entertainment is pleased to announce that FREAKSHOW #1, the debut creator-owned comic from creators David Server & Jackson Lanzing with art by rising star Joe Suitor, has sold out from the publisher. This marks an exciting start for the highly anticipated miniseries, which is poised to introduce a new, original brand of post-apocalyptic superhero action to audiences all over the world.

"FREAKSHOW is an incredibly exciting project with roots in the superhero, science-fiction, and horror genres, so we knew we'd be able to turn some heads with comics fans", says Ape Co-Publisher David Hedgecock, "but the response to the book from fans and retailers has been truly overwhelming. We're thrilled to finally get this book into the hands of our readers."

The sell-out follows an auspicious preview run at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, which also sold out on the convention floor. Interest has been bolstered by positive early reviews from such websites as SlashFilm and Comic Book Resources, as well as the attachment of veteran screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND, THOR, the upcoming MASS EFFECT), who has been announced to write and possibly direct a feature adaptation of the comic for producers Jennifer Klein (PEARL HARBOR) and Sheldon Turner (UP IN THE AIR).

"We've always hoped the world of FREAKSHOW would resonate with people, so the feedback we've gotten so far from fans we've met at conventions and online has been tremendously exciting and gratifying," said Server. "We couldn't be more thankful that retailers are taking a chance on our book," adds Lanzing, "and we plan to reward readers with three issues of characters, story, and art that's like nothing else on the stands."

Since Ape Entertainment recognizes that this sell-out will limit retailers from ordering further copies of FREAKSHOW #1, there are plans to release a digital version of the book as soon as possible. A similar digital format is planned for issues #2 and #3, and details will be announced by Ape upon release.

To find out for yourself why Fangoria gave FREAKSHOW #1 four out of four skulls, calling it "noteworthy and original" with "stylish artwork and attention grabbing storytelling", make sure to contact your local retailer and reserve a copy as soon as possible. The book will be arriving in stores January 26th, and will be followed monthly by issues #2 and #3. Those issues are still available for ordering from Diamond Comics distribution using ordering codes #DEC100718 and #JAN110927 respectively.

Their humanity seemingly stripped away, they must navigate the clandestine military quarantine zone that has engulfed the city, balancing their thirst for revenge with their new ability to exact it. But as they draw closer to their goal, they begin to realize that their own dark origins may be more closely linked to the devastation than they thought...

ORIGINAL UK SERIES, BEING HUMAN, RETURNS NEXT MONTH ON BBC AMERICA’S SUPERNATURAL SATURDAYS FOR A MONSTER THIRD SEASON

Russell Tovey as George, Sinead Keenan as Nina, Aidan Turner as Mitchell and Lenora Crichlow as Annie

New York, NY – Being Human, BBC AMERICA’s original hit supernatural series about a group of friends trying to live normal lives despite their unusual afflictions, is back – and, says creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, "It is, without doubt, our best season yet.”

“A third season is a unique opportunity because it allows you to take all the best bits of season one and season two," he says. "What we took from season one is the domestic element and very strong stories of the week with very strong guest characters. Season two had much more of an epic sweep and a breadth of ambition. Season three has allowed us to combine all those things.”

A BBC AMERICA co-production, Being Human stars Russell Tovey, Sinead Keenan, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner as werewolf George, werewolf Nina, ghost Annie and vampire Mitchell - four friends doing the best they can to cope with the supernatural challenges of their lives while trying to blend in with their human neighbors. The showdown last season with Kemp and Lucy Jaggat has forced some changes for the friends. Couple George and Nina plus Mitchell have fled their beloved house in Bristol and are looking for a new house to rent in Wales. They are also without Annie, who is stuck in purgatory and desperately trying to escape. Being Human premieres on Supernatural Saturday, February 19, 9:00p.m. ET/PT for eight weeks.

Leaving the memories of their much-loved former house behind, George, Nina and Mitchell settle into their new home – a kitsch bed and breakfast named Honolulu Heights that boasts many benefits for supernatural sharers – a large basement providing a safe and sheltered environment on a full moon, for one.

Season three boasts an impressive array of guest-stars, including Lacey Turner (EastEnders) as Lia, who Mitchell meets in Purgatory, Robson Green (Wire In The Blood) as primitive werewolf McNair, Michael Socha (This Is England '86) as McNair's son Tom, Paul Kaye (It's All Gone Pete Tong) as twisted vampire Vincent, Craig Roberts (Young Dracula) as teenage vampire Adam; Nicola Walker (MI-5) as social worker Wendy, James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral) as George's father George Sr; and Jason Watkins making an eventful return as vampire leader Herrick.

Being Human first premiered on BBC AMERICA in 2009 and quickly won over fans and critics alike, and has even spawned a US remake. The New York Times recently said that the UK series “has energy, and interesting characters, and a pulpy momentum that keeps you engaged in its kitchen-sink drama meets Bram Stoker story lines,” and Variety called it “improbably absorbing, wonderfully sly.” In addition, the cast and creator have appeared to sold-out crowds at the last two years of San Diego Comic Con. Season one and two of Being Human are available on DVD and Blu-ray on the BBC AMERICA Shop and iTunes.

BBC AMERICA brings audiences a new generation of award-winning television featuring news with a uniquely global perspective, provocative dramas, razor-sharp comedies, life-changing makeovers and a whole new world of nonfiction. BBC AMERICA pushes the boundaries to deliver high quality, highly addictive and eminently watchable programming to viewers who demand more. It is available on digital cable and satellite TV in more than 68 million homes.

WORLD’S FIRST VIRTUAL SPORTS THEME PARK REWARDING KIDS FOR ACTIVE PLAY TO LAUNCH THIS SPRING – FUNGOPLAY.COM

Online World Introduces Sports-Themed Games, Customizable Avatars and Original Characters with “Connected” Sports Gear To Track Play Periods
And Reward Kids For On-The-Go Real World Physical Activity

NEW YORK – January 24, 2011 – An all-new virtual world is launching this spring for online and mobile platforms that bridges the gap between offline and online play in a way that is truly interactive and social, combining the interests of children with the attributes that parents seek -- FunGoPlay. An online sports theme park, FunGoPlay separates itself from all other virtual worlds through “connected” sports gear that rewards kids every time they use them in the real world by tracking their play periods and earning them medals, points, and power-ups in the online world.

Targeted at 6-11 year old boys and girls, FunGoPlay comes from a group of industry veterans across different fields – entertainment, digital media and licensing - with a common mission to deliver a safe, affordable online entertainment experience that both parents and children will love. By merging the most appealing aspects of online gaming with the joys of real world play, FunGoPlay connects new technologies with classic play patterns like nothing ever before.

“Our research shows that kids’ activity levels are determined when they are eight and nine years old. Not coincidentally, this is the time that they are being sucked into the often sedentary lifestyle of video games and surfing online,” said FunGoPlay President, David Jacobs. “We saw an opportunity to combine two leading kid passions—digital entertainment and real world active sports play—so we changed the game by introducing a virtual world that rewards kids for playing and being active in the real world. We see this as a future of online gaming that both parents and children can enjoy.”

"FunGoPlay has developed a model that could change the face of sporting goods," said David Mauer, former President of Mattel USA and current CEO of EB Brands, the Yonkers based manufacturer that will be creating the initial line of FunGoPlay sports gear. "This is the future of products staring us right in the face, and most importantly, gets kids to be more active, thereby improving their health in a significant way."

At its core, FunGoPlay is a humorous and light-hearted online sports world that offers kids fun games, funny characters and fully customizable avatars combined with ample rewards and achievements. When children enter the site they are greeted by a vast universe filled with different sports-themed venues and events based on everything from core sports like basketball, baseball, soccer and football to extreme and non-traditional sports such as skateboarding and outdoor games. Games will consist of quick, fun mini-games along with more elaborate single and multiplayer games.

FunGoPlay features an engaging storyline that is told through the FunGoPlay All Stars, a cast of characters that kids can play with and against throughout the world. Every character in the game possesses a rich history and distinct personality that will develop during the course of a child’s interaction with the site. To intermingle with these characters and navigate the universe, kids will utilize their own fully customizable avatars – called FunGoPlayers -- that can be created through one of the deepest databases any online world has ever seen.

FunGoPlay will utilize a Freemium subscription model offering kids access at a variety of levels. Pricing will be announced at a later date. For more information on FunGoPlay, visit www.fungoplay.com.

FunGoPlay is entering the digital space during a period where entertainment technologies capture the interests of children, but also as childhood obesity rates have risen to unprecedented levels and continue to rise. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America is overweight or obese*. This makes the need to introduce activities that use virtual avenues to encourage real world play all the more crucial.

Research shows that currently 89 percent of kids 8-17 play online games making it the number one youth activity** with a projection that 46 percent of all 3-11 year olds will play in virtual worlds in 2011***. This demographic will be one segment of a market that will hit 20 million during this same year†. Concurrently, FunGoPlay will be entering the mobile space at a time of similar growth in that category, much of it again spawned by the younger sect. In 2011, 64 million people in the US will play mobile games. Children will be a large segment of that as studies show that 49 percent of kids 6-11 use mobile phones to play games†† and two-thirds of children ages 4 to 7 have used an iPhone or iPod touch and 85% have used one owned by a parent†††.

ORIGINAL SCI FI EPIC LAUNCHING SOON FROM MOONSTONE!

Moonstone Entertainment, Inc., a leading publisher of comics and books, has just signed a contract to publish an epic science fiction project called NEUTRAL WORLD, as created by well known comic and pulp writer Ron Fortier and comic superstar artist, Joe Bennett.

Bennett, a self-taught Brazilian artist, entered the field in the early 1990s and soon became one of the most sought after talents in comics. His fantastic pencils and inks have graced dozens of titles both at Marvel and DC and there are very few iconic superheroes he has not worked on in his amazing career. Today, along with his current assignments for the DC, he operates a studio in his hometown of Belem, which is where NEUTRAL WORLD was first conceived.

A lifelong fan of the great Jack Kirby, Bennett dreamed of creating an epic science fiction saga that would span both space and time. Grandiose in its imagination, it would be his ultimate homage to the man who inspired him to become a comic book illustrator. From creation to the far flung future, NEUTRAL WORLD weaves an action heavy tale of high adventure populated by some of the greatest new heroes and villains ever conceived on a comic page.

Once Bennett felt the concept was complete, his objective became taking it to the next level; shaping his multiple plots and ideas into a single, linear narrative. To help him achieve that end and turn his dreams into actual comic scripts, he reached out to the writer who had penned his first ever professional comics work twenty years earlier; Ron Fortier.

Ron Fortier started writing comics professionally in 1976 with two stories, both accepted and published in the try-out series, “Bullseye” from Charlton Comics. From that beginning, Fortier’s work began to appear in various independent companies from Ocean Comics. Eclipse, Malibu and ultimately Now Comics where he was brought on to write “The Terminator” series starting with issue # 9.

Fortier’s crowning achievement was successfully assisting Now Comics in obtaining the license to produce a brand new Green Hornet comic series. Fortier’s presentation offered a generational family saga that cleverly incorporated all the various incarnations of the hero. Now Comics’ Green Hornet proved to be the company’s most successful title and Fortier’s name would became irrevocably connected to the character to this day. He recently wrote his first new Green Hornet tale in over twenty years when he contributed to the recently produced anthology from Moonstone Books, “The Green Hornet Chronicles.”

And now these two popular comic creators, Bennett & Fortier, have reunited to bring the world NEUTRAL WORLD, a mega saga nearly 200 pages long. Moonstone Comics will present the entire series in three, stunning, full color graphic novels. Ace cover painter Mark Maddox will provide the covers for NEUTRAL WORLD and is thrilled to be involved with the project. All art will be produced in Bennett’s studio with the lettering being handled by American artist, Rob Davis.

To better set the concept of NEUTRAL WORLD, Moonstone will release a 16 pgs, full color preview comic to be sold for .99 cents. It will showcase a nine page action sequence from the first volume plus seven gorgeous character sketches complete with biographies. This mini Issue O will serve to introduce comic fans to the excitement and thrills of NEUTRAL WORLD and whet their appetites for the first graphic novel, now in production.

NEUTRAL WORLD, a gifted artist’s twenty year dream is about to become a stellar, ground breaking comic event! And it’s coming to you soon from MOONSTONE!

EVERYONE WANTS A VACATION
Infinite Vacation #1 Sells Out, Second Printing Scheduled

Berkeley, CA - January 20, 2011 -

Image Comics is pleased to announce yet another sell-out first issue today. A second printing of Nick Spencer and Christian Ward's Shadowline title, THE INFINITE VACATION #1, has been scheduled to satisfy the demand of readers who missed out on Spencer's latest hit.

"It's so great to get all this support from the fans right from the start!" exclaimed Nick Spencer, writer, "I also feel very lucky to have Christian Ward working with me as a co-creator on this project. THE INFINITE VACATION is simultaneously the story of an everyman but also vibrant and surreal -- like a visual representation of the subconscious in a technologically-driven world. Christian's art just hits the mark exactly, and it's clear that the fans feel the same way!"

Spencer’s other titles with Image/Shadowline include EXISTENCE 2.0, EXISTENCE 3.0, SHUDDERTOWN, FORGETLESS, and he is also currently writing the runaway hit MORNING GLORIES. Christian Ward's colorful and psychedelic art style filled the pages of another Image comic, OLYMPUS.

"MORNING GLORIES, 27, and now THE INFINITE VACATION. I'm overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the support both fans and retailers have shown to Shadowline and Image," said Jim Valentino, Publisher of Image's Shadowline studio.

THE INFINITE VACATION is a high concept science fiction love story taking place in a parallel reality, where an app that allows the user to answer the age-old question of "what if" has changed everyone's lives forever. The first issue has not only received outstanding fan reaction, but also glowing reviews. Comic Book Resources called it "as smart and engaging a comic as you could hope for."

THE INFINITE VACATION #1 Second Printing (DEC108124), a 32-page full-color comic book for only $3.50, will be in stores February 16, 2011.

Miss Something During the Holidaze?

Catch up on MBP's Recent Releases
NEW YORK - January 19, 2011 - The first month of 2011 is already winding down, but we here at MBP feel like the last part of 2010 blew by so fast we're just catching up with it. Between end of year madness and some internal changes, we wanted to remind you, our fine, fair media friends, about four great titles we've recently released that might very well be of interest to you but got lost in the Holidaze shuffle.

For any of you that had responded to these initial press releases and never heard back from us, our bad. Emails were funneled into black holes, but we've fixed all of that using space-age technology and the backspace key. Should any of these books pique your interest, let us know and we'll send you a review copy.

Becoming: Yishay Garbasz dares to explore one of society's most taboo subjects-the exercise of individual agency in the unmaking and remaking of a body's gender. In this groundbreaking work and objet d'art, Garbasz courageously documents the changes she underwent from one year before her gender reassignment surgery until one year afterward. Becoming's flipbook format renders visible and immediate the element of time in this process, a topic touched upon in the foreword written by film critic Vivian Sobchack.

The Obscene Image: Photographer Gilles Tondini has documented the frenzied frescos created by medical interns in Paris who use hospital break rooms to let off steam and maintain sanity as they work to save lives. Graphic, sexually charged, saturated with color and lewd references, these little known images manifest all the frustrations, stresses, highs, and lows that medical professionals anywhere must deal with in their quests to keep people healthy. The book is bilingual English and French.

Everything That Can Happen in a Day: What does it take to snap someone out of their daily routine? Over the course of 2009, artist David Horvitz explored this question by sending out directives on a daily basis, encouraging people to take action and infuse their day with whimsy and creativity. From giving a flower to every cashier you purchase something from to capturing a photograph of yourself sticking your head in a refrigerator, Horvitz's project reminds readers that "nothing will happen unless you first initiate a process of cause and effect."

Fuzz and Fur: The adoration of mythical creatures and popular anime characters is nothing new in Japan, but kigurumi, roughly translated as "fur suit mascots," is a growing pastime that is also a marketing tool. Profiling over 100 kigurumi with photographs and text that explaining their origins, Fuzz & Fur is the definitive compendium of this fascinating subculture.

Star Trek Voyager's Robert Picardo and producer/director/writer Dr. Harry Kloor will host the U.S. premiere of Quantum Quest, the 3-D computer animated Large Format adventure film, at the gala preview party of "Science With A Twist: An Evening Aboard The Enterprise" on Saturday night, January 22nd at the Louisville Science Center museum.

Quantum Quest interweaves animated sequences with stunning, actual space imagery captured from seven ongoing NASA and NASA/ESA space missions. In addition to Picardo, the film boasts an A-list voice cast including two Captain Kirks (veteran William Shatner and Chris Pine), two Jedi Knights (Mark Hamill and Samuel L. Jackson) and two Darth Vaders (James Earl Jones and Hayden Christensen) - a first for Hollywood and the galaxy. Quantum Quest will be released in Large Format and conventional theaters in spring, 2011.

Quantum Quest is the first time that NASA’s iconic Jet Propulsion Laboratory has ever initiated a film project and the first time that Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the surface of the Moon, has participated in a feature film, lending his voice to one of the characters.

Combining solid, “real” science with Hollywood-style narrative story-telling, Quantum Quest is designed to communicate the excitement of space exploration and science discovery to students K through 12. Quantum Quest will provide more free educational materials, prepared by leading educators, scientists, space and science organizations (including the Fleet Museum and the Planetary Society), than any previous Large Screen film.

“This is a stealth science education film disguised as fun Hollywood entertainment,” says Dr. Kloor. “Whenever we talk about science, it’s exact, but QQ’s message is to tell kids – and grownups of all ages - that

science is cool.”

Dr. Harry Kloor, Ph.D. Physics, Ph.D. Chemistry, is a writer, director, producer, scientist, inventor, and national technology policy advisor. Dr. Kloor has 15 years experience writing/developing films and TV series. In 1994, he earned the unique status of being the first and, to date, the only person to simultaneously earn two doctorates, one in Physics and the other in Chemistry, both from Purdue University. This achievement was so singular that it gained national recognition in such publications as The New York Times and People. His writing credits include Star Trek: Voyager and the animated series Godzilla, and Earth: Final Conflict, and he was a producer and played a key role in developing the hit TV series Earth: Final Conflict. Dr. Kloor is a recognized leader in bringing science to the public. He founded a National Physics Outreach Program at Purdue University in 1991, forming partnerships with Marvel Entertainment and Paramount Pictures to use their iconic properties such as Spider-Man and Star Trek to advance science. Dr. Kloor has produced and directed a variety of commercials and industrial documentaries, published articles stories in various newspapers and scientific publications and sits on a range of advisory boards including Rocket Racing League (for which he was the Founding Advisor) and Signacert. Dr. Kloor served as Science Advisor to the famed X Prize organization, and has worked in advancing science literacy to the public for over 20 years.

Award-winning Comic Creator Expands Jolly Rogue Studios

January 14, 2011: With the recent decision to self-publish Sky Pirates of Valendor, creator and publisher of Jolly Rogue Studios Everett Soares has decided to share his lessons learned and possibly even lessen the burden of being a creator by offering up the talents of his most trusted team. In this endeavor, Soares has partnered with those in the industry who have helped him, trusted him and created with him to establish a one-stop shop to aid creators and publishers to develop their properties. The main goal of Jolly Rogue Studios is to provide guidance, support and resources that enable any creator or publisher in need. The team consists of a writer, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, graphic designer, web designer, editor and publicist. The studio, based on their experience, will market themselves to comic book creators and publishers, gaming companies and novelists.

Jolly Rogue Studios was founded in 2007 for the sole purpose of creating Sky Pirates of Valendor. As a finalist in Small Press Idol that year, Soares went from aspiring comic book writer to published creator virtually overnight. But that didn't come as easily as it sounds. Building his team was the hardest process for Soares. He interviewed and auditioned over 16 artists before he hit jackpot with Brian Brinlee. Then after losing his original inker and colorist, another search began. The end result - Alex Rivera and Jet Amago.

In 2010, Jolly Rogue Studios grew even larger with the valuable addition of George Burnett, website design guru. George gave Sky Pirates of Valendor the amazing presence to the world that it needed. Next to the dazzling art and intriguing storylines, one of the most appealing assets that Sky Pirates of Valendor possesses is its packaging. Working with Soares since the launch of Sky Pirates of Valendor, talented graphic designer Steve Kuster has created a unique look and feel that engages the reader.

To round out the studio, Soares has welcomed longtime friend and grammar guru, Amy Haley to the team for her mad editing skills. And last but not least, a project of this magnitude would not be complete without his partner, wife and promotions goddess, Susan Soares. Together, this happy group of 8 will conquer the world with their extraordinary organization, communication and teamwork skills to bring their clients’ projects to fruition with the same level of magic they’ve experienced for the past four years.

First Native American News Website and Media Network Aims To Be Entertainment Community's Go-to Destination

For News and Information About Indigenous Peoples

Launch Celebrated With Poly-Bag Insert in Variety's Golden Globe Issue

(New York, January 14, 2011) – Ray Halbritter, Nation Representative and CEO of the Oneida Indian Nation, announced today that the just-launched Indian Country Today Media Network, the country's first-ever website and media network for news and information about Native American and indigenous peoples, will introduce itself to the entertainment community with a poly-bag insert in Variety's Friday Golden Globe issue.

“With Indian Country Today Media Network we have created a full service media platform that is current, timely, sophisticated, inclusive and widely available," said Halbritter. "As the only national, daily source of essential news and information from Indian country," Halbritter explained, "our goal is to establish Indian Country Today Media Network as the thought leader in the national dialogue on Native American issues.

"Indian Country Today Media Network is a one-stop shopping destination for producers, studios, production companies, writers and actors. We can introduce the entertainment community to a deep pool of potential content, to above and below the line talent, help with casting and locations, and even assist in vetting scripts for historical and culture accuracy. We are the source for connecting the dots between the entertainment industry and Native Americans."

Indian Country Today Media Network evolved from Indian Country Today, the Oneida Indian Nation's award-winning national Native American newspaper.

Indian Country Today Media Network is designed to be the premier portal for Indian Country and the go-to destination for all things indigenous. The various platforms will include www.Indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com and a weekly magazine, This Week From Indian Country Today, which is being distributed to Variety readers in their Golden Globes issue today. Future plans call for the production of syndicated and online radio shows, and a content and advertising network, another first for Native Americans.

The website and magazine will provide essential news and information from Indian Country, featuring new artists and cultural highlights, and give life to the most forceful voices in the national community. The network will also offer online services in the areas of education, business and events ... everything from listings of tribal colleges to the latest pow wows to the array of entertainment projects with Native themes.

Not only is Indian Country Today Media Network a compelling platform for Native Americans, it’s also an opportunity for advertisers to reach one of the fastest growing populations in the US with a projected buying power of over $67 billion in 2010 (The Multicultural Economy 2010, Jeffrey M. Humphreys, University of Georgia, Selig Center for Economic Growth).

An advisory board of leading and prominent members of the Nations—including tribal leaders, educators, entrepreneurs and government officials—will help guide the policy of Indian Country Today Media Network under Op Ed Editor Ray Cook and Washington D.C. THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU

Genre Bending Film Comes to Dark Sky Films DVD on February 15, 2011

“What a great film – the laughs keep coming and they never let up.”

– The Film Reel

“a strong, fun independent movie that Lovecraft fans will really love.”

– John Allison, RowThree.com

Mankind is threatened with extinction, and it’s up to three geeks and a salty sea captain to prevent disaster in the uproariously frightening THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU. The movie, inspired by the writings of horror icon H.P. Lovecraft, will thrill aficionados when it reaches DVD via Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group on February 15, 2011, with an SRP of $24.98.

Bored office drone Jeff (Kyle Davis, Friday the 13th) is informed by a mysterious elderly professor that he is the last living descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, the revered author of such horror/fantasy classics as The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Re-Animator and the Cthulhu Mythos stories. Jeff is thus the only person who can prevent a race of evil creatures (drawn from Lovecraft’s imagination) from wreaking havoc. The mild-mannered Jeff must protect an ancient relic and prevent it from falling into the clutches of the monsters, which would bring about the release of all-powerful evil known as Cthulhu. Jeff enlists the aid of his co-worker Charlie (screenwriter and producer, Devin McGinn, Bones) and a husky Lovecraft aficionado, Paul (Barak Hardley, Greek), and together they put their slacker lives on hold to embark on an icky and hilarious mission to save the world. Along the way, they get some help from an a sea captain with a fish-boy son – and discover that Lovecraft’s horrific monsters, including a T-shirt-wearing reptile man, are far from fictional.

Part road movie, part buddy movie in the vein of Superbad and The Hangover, THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU is also a supremely creepy tribute to H.P. Lovecraft. No less an authority than Stephen King called him “the 20th century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale.” Lovecraft’s tales of Cthulhu and other stories have spawned movies, books, toys, games, apparel and collectibles.

An Official Selection of the Toronto After Dark Film Fest and the Slamdance Film Festival, THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU has fans and critics alike in its thrall. Todd Brown of TwitchFilm.net called it “a loving ode to both B-grade monster cinema … and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. … so slapdash charming that it’s impossible not to enjoy the ride.” “Funny from start to finish and full of some great creature effects,” said The Film Reel. Director Henry Saine “brings to life some seriously creepy Lovecraftian sea monsters with equal parts blood, slime and slapstick,” wrote Roxxanne Benjamin at Bloody-Disgusting.com. And Toronto Film Scene said, “No one and no thing takes itself seriously in THE LAST LOVECRAFT, and that’s definitely part of its charm … both gory and funny (one of the best combinations!).”

Japanese fur suit mascots: A strange amalgam of hometown pride and cost-saving measures

New York, NY - January 11th, 2011 - The adoration of mythical creatures and popular anime characters is nothing new in Japan, but kigurumi, roughly translated as "fur suit mascots," is a growing pastime that is also a marketing tool. An oversized daikon radish, a skiing egg, a bear with an apple for a head, a volcano sticking out its tongue - these furry mascots wander the streets of Japan, and the pages of Edward and John Harrison's Fuzz & Fur.

Created to promote a prefecture or institution by honoring landmarks, local points of interest, regional produce, historical figures, civic institutions, and traditional folklore, municipalities have taken advantage of their citizens' willingness to design costumes and dress up as these characters in a strange amalgam of hometown pride and cost-saving measures.

Being chosen to fill the role of a kigurumi is a chance at local stardom, as the authors explain in their introduction: "The characters have background and personalities. Blogs and websites are made, merchandise produced, and they regularly make appearances at events and on television. Some even release books and have Twitter accounts."

Profiling over 100 kigurumi with photographs and text that explains these mascots' origins, as well as their likes and dislikes, Fuzz & Fur is the definitive compendium of this fascinating subculture, and the perfect companion to Edward and John Harrison's Idle Idol, which documents three-dimensional Japanese mascots.

About the Authors:

Edward Harrison is a designer and illustrator living in Tokyo. He enjoys taking photographs of strange signs and rusty Kanji. When not creating his own characters for clients including Adidas, Redbull and Eurostar he likes to track down and document Japanese mascots.

John Harrison is a designer and illustrator living in London. When not creating websites and animations for clients including Myspace and Nickelodeon he likes to try and avoid injuring himself while cycling and learning Taekwondo.
