STARZ AND SONY PICTURES TV ADD ACTORS TO THE “OUTLANDER” CLAN

Scottish Natives Graham McTavish and Gary Lewis Join Cast of Anticipated Original Series as Dougal and Colum MacKenzie Respectively

Beverly Hills, Calif., September 4, 2013 Starz in association with Sony Pictures Television has announced today that Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, “24”) will play Dougal MacKenzie and Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot, Gangs of New York) will play Colum MacKenzie in the highly anticipated original series “Outlander.” The series will be adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books, with the first two episodes written by executive producer Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and directed by John Dahl (“Dexter,” “Breaking Bad,” “Justified”). “Outlander,” which is set to premiere on STARZ in 2014, will begin filming in Scotland, where the series is set, this fall.

McTavish and Lewis, who both hail from Scotland, will join fellow Scot Sam Heughan, who was recently cast as Jamie Fraser for the series. Fraser, whose full name is James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser, is nephew to Dougal and Colum; when the series begins, Fraser has yet to swear allegiance to the MacKenzie clan causing a heated tension amongst the hot-blooded Scottish clan.

The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history and adventure in one epic tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Dougal MacKenzie is the War Chieftain of Clan MacKenzie.  His older brother Colum is the ruling Laird but would be nothing without Dougal, his loyal right hand.  Dougal is a skilled and experienced warrior. A strong leader, he commands respect in any setting and is feared by many. Unlike his brother, Dougal secretly supports the rebel cause against the British.

Colum is Jamie's maternal uncle. He is a man who reigns over a powerful clan, but must rely on Dougal to be the true muscle.  Colum suffers from a condition now known as Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome, a degenerative disease that renders his legs immobile at times, and fills his days with great physical pain.  Colum, using wine to dull the pain, is able to rise to the occasion when needed, parading around at clan dinners and gatherings, solidifying his position as clan leader.

Graham McTavish has starred in a number of film and television roles including opposite Sylvester Stallone in Rambo and as the Russian Diplomat Mikhail Novakovich on the final season of “24.” He recently starred as Dwalin in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will reprise his role in the last two installments of the Peter Jackson trilogy.  Graham has had leading roles in the feature films Green Street 2: Stand Your Ground and The Wicker Tree. His other feature roles include Middle Men, Secretariat and Colombiana.  Graham has served as the voice of Dante Alighieri in the recent animated film and video game of the same name, “Dante’s Inferno,” and has also performed voices for “Wolverine and the X-Men,” “Hulk Vs.” and “The Avengers.” He has appeared in leading roles in prestigious UK theatres including, the Royal Court, the National in London and the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh.  He is represented by Cheri Barner Management and the Stone, Manners, Salners Agency

Gary Lewis has become internationally known for such high profile roles as the troubled father in Billy Elliot and the volatile McGloin in Gangs of New York. He has appeared in many critically acclaimed films, including My Name Is Joe and the Oscar nominated Joyeux Noel. He won a Best Actor award at Gijon Film Festival for his role in Peter Mullan’s Orphans. His work on flagship television shows such as Prime Suspect attracted praise and he was BAFTA nominated for his role in Mo alongside Julie Walters. His most recent work includes Libertador, a film about the life of Simon Bolivar and The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich, about the last years of Wilhelm Reich. Gary also starred in the acclaimed BBC One drama “Case Histories.” He continues to work on short films, such as The Terms directed by Jason LaMotte. Gary is represented by Creative Artists Management in the UK.

Diana Gabaldon’s seven-book series has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and has graced the New York Times best-sellers list six times. The eighth installment of the “Outlander” series is slated to be released in the spring of 2014.

Ronald D. Moore and Jim Kohlberg are executive producers of “Outlander,” which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Daniel Roebuck’s Classic Monster & Horror Film Collectibles
to go on the Auction Block at the TCL Chinese Theatres on Oct. 26

Los Angeles, CA - September 4, 2013

Attention: Guys and Ghouls!

In what will surely be the greatest monster matchup since ABBOTT & COSTELLO met FRANKENSTEIN in 1948, Blacksparrow Auctions is teaming up with DR. SHOCKER (noted character actor Daniel Roebuck's alter ego) to offer movie fans a once in a lifetime collectible event, DR. SHOCKER'S AUCTION OF HORROR!

This will be a rare opportunity to relive the pop culture explosion of classic monster and horror memorabilia of the late 20th century through the collection of one of its most avid fans, Daniel Roebuck.  For nearly half a century, Roebuck has fostered a passion for classic monster and horror film collectibles.  This love for all things monster related eventually grew so large that Roebuck, inspired by Forry Ackerman and Bob Burns, opened his own museum, DR. SHOCKER'S HOUSE OF HORROR!  Now this comprehensive cross section of his amassed treasures is being passed on, including a vintage Bride of Frankenstein theatrical banner poster, dozens of lobby cards, autographs, original artwork, wax figures, vintage dolls, props, life masks, and many of the classic toys once offered in the pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.  The live auction event will take place at the Chinese 6 Theatres of the world famous TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, CA on October 26, 2013.  A print catalog, featuring ShockerVision, is available for pre-order now at blacksparrowauctions.com.

Adding to the excitement of the auction event, Blacksparrow Auctions is pleased to announce the world premier of Roebuck's latest Dr. Shocker project, DR. SHOCKER'S VAULT OF HORROR, on October 9th at the same Chinese 6 Theatres.  This DVD release will feature a veritable BOO-POURRI of ghoulish delights, including MONSTERMANIACS, a documentary about the monster collecting craze featuring Roebuck's historic collection as its centerpiece.  Seating is limited for the one night only big screen premiere. RSVP at blacksparrowauctions@gmail.com.

About Daniel Roebuck
Daniel Roebuck has spent nearly three decades building an impressive resume chock full of blockbuster films (THE FUGITIVE), kids movies (AGENT CODY BANKS), horror movies (HALLOWEEN 2) and television series (LOST).  He has portrayed many famous people, including Jay Leno and Garry Marshall.  Although he has fulfilled nearly every dream of his childhood—such as appearing in MAD MAGAZINE, becoming a TOY and a HALLOWEEN MASK, having his mug on a few TRADING CARDS and appearing as THE FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER (in Rob Zombie’s latest film, THE LORDS OF SALEM) —Roebuck refuses to retire (despite countless threats) and continues to work as one of Hollywood’s busiest character actors!  For more information on either Daniel Roebuck OR Dr. Shocker, please visit www.docshocker.com.

“Halloween is a time to celebrate the simple things: neighbor kids begging at your door, cleaning splattered eggs off your car window, and of course, laughing along with the classic zombie movie that kick-started the genre. We’re thrilled to be riffing along with a great print of this much-loved film!” said Michael J. Nelson, RiffTrax creator and former host of the Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

A classic horror film, 1968’s “Night of the Living Dead” kicked off the ubiquitous zombie craze. The movie begins when Barbara and her brother Johnny travel to the countryside to visit their father’s gravestone. In the cemetery, Johnny is murdered by a peculiar man and Barbara must flee to an abandoned farmhouse. Also hiding from the zombies in the house is Ben, who boards up the doors and windows. After listening to the radio and learning that a satellite returning from space has reanimated the dead, Ben and Barbara discover five additional survivors hidden in the basement. Harry—one of the ragtag band of survivors—disagrees with Ben’s leadership, and the tension between the two men intensifies. As the group waits out the apocalypse, the house is besieged by an increasing throng of living dead.

“An evening at the movie theater with RiffTrax Live is always a hilarious and fun experience,” said Shelly Maxwell, executive vice president of NCM Fathom Events. “Seeing the guys fire their wisecracking commentary at ‘Night of the Living Dead’ on the big screen is a must-see for everyone’s Halloween to-do list.”

DOLPHIN ENTERTAINMENT, MATTEL TO DEVELOP, PRODUCE
“MAX STEEL,” OPEN ROAD FILMS TO DISTRIBUTE
FOR WIDE THEATRICAL RELEASE
Christopher Yost to Write, Stewart Hendler Attached to Direct Live-Action Film;
Newly Created Dolphin Films Enters Multi-Picture Distribution Agreement with Open Road Films; Dolphin Films Hires Charlie Cohen as President
HOLLYWOOD – September 4, 2013 – Dolphin Entertainment, Inc. and Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT), have partnered to develop the live-action, feature-length film “Max Steel” based on Mattel’s franchise property of the same name.  The film will be produced by Dolphin Films, a newly-formed subsidiary of Dolphin Entertainment.  Open Road Films will distribute “Max Steel” in the U.S. as the first of a multi-picture agreement with Dolphin Films.  The film will be given a wide release in theaters in the fourth quarter of 2014.
“Today marks the beginning of an exciting new relationship between Dolphin Entertainment and Mattel, two companies that have consistently worked to delight and entertain children all over the world,” said Bill O’Dowd, CEO, Dolphin Entertainment.  “We couldn’t think of a better property to kick off Dolphin’s feature film division than Max Steel, which tells a story of the power of friendship and teamwork, with a heavy dose of humor – all qualities we hope to bring to our partnership with the Mattel team.”
Dolphin Films’ multi-picture agreement with Open Road Films will focus on motion pictures aimed at families, tweens, teens and young adults, which is a strategy that aligns closely with Dolphin and O’Dowd’s history delivering television and digital programming to those demographics.
"Dolphin has an excellent track record in creating family, tween, teen and young adult- focused entertainment," said Tom Ortenberg, CEO, Open Road Films.  "We can’t wait to work with Bill O’Dowd and his team to bring this product to the marketplace.”
“Launching our film division has been a natural progression for us.  Along with our established television and digital departments, our theatrical group will complete our goal of having a fully cross-platform production and distribution business,” added O’Dowd. “Open Road Films was the first choice for our theatrical partner as Tom Ortenberg, Elliott Kleinberg and Jason Cassidy are not only accomplished in the theatrical distribution business, but also true gentlemen.”
Created internally by Mattel, the Max Steel™ franchise spans multi-platform entertainment, toys and consumer products. In development with Dolphin Entertainment the feature-length film will introduce audiences to a new and never-before-seen world of Max Steel.
“Teaming with Dolphin Entertainment and top Hollywood creative talent to write, produce and direct the feature film, Max Steel will excite and engage audiences around the world,” said Doug Wadleigh, Senior Vice President, Global Brands Marketing. “Max Steel’s debut on the big screen is the next evolutionary step for the franchise utilizing a live-action theatrical format to truly personify the brand.”
Bill O’Dowd will produce the film alongside kid’s entertainment veteran Julia Pistor who is producing for Mattel. Pistor’s storytelling and production expertise spans over two-decades with extensive work in television, film and syndication for premier global entertainment companies including Nickelodeon, HIT Entertainment and Viacom Enterprises.
“Max Steel is an action-packed, character-driven story that fits perfectly into the creative movie-making mold,” said Pistor.  “We have assembled a world-class team in bringing Christopher and Stewart to the project and collectively will tell the origin story of Max Steel in an authentic, visually compelling way.”
“Max Steel” tells the story of teenager Maxwell McGrath and alien companion Steel who can combine special turbo-energy powers to generate sensational superhero Max Steel. The storyline centers on bringing a positive and relatable hero to kids, drawing upon turbo-charged teamwork, laughter and friendship.
“Max Steel” writer Christopher Yost most recently rewrote and did the production work on “Thor: The Dark World” for Marvel and director Alan Taylor.  He also wrote the superhero adventure “Secret Headquarters” for Paramount and Stuber Pictures.  Previously, Yost was a member of Marvel's Writers Program, where he worked on the first “Thor.”  “Max Steel” director Stewart Hendler recently directed and executive produced “H+,” a digital series for Dolphin Entertainment and Warner Brothers Entertainment, winning a Best Director award and sharing in a Best Sci-Fi or Action Series award at The 2013 Streamy Awards.  Hendler also recently completed work on the award-winning digital series “Halo: Forward Unto Dawn.”  Between them, “Halo” and “H+” have garnered 24 industry nominations, thus far.  He also manages an active feature film career, having directed the studio features “Whisper” and “Sorority Row,” as well as developing several large-scale studio projects.
Dolphin Entertainment has a long history delivering television and digital programming to children and young adults.  Dolphin’s programs can be seen in more than 300 million homes in over 100 territories worldwide.  Dolphin Entertainment shows include the Primetime Emmy® Award-nominated Nickelodeon hit series “Zoey 101,” Nickelodeon’s  top-rated “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” and in partnership with Warner Bros Digital both AOL/Cambio distributed series  “Aim High” starring Jackson Rathbone and Aimee Teegarden, and YouTube distributed “H+: The Digital Series” from Bryan Singer.
O’Dowd has appointed Charles Cohen, former COO of MGM Studios, to serve as President of the newly-formed Dolphin Films.  With Cohen at the helm, Dolphin Films will produce all theatrical projects for Dolphin Entertainment.  Cohen is a 25-year veteran of MGM Studios, who most recently held the position of senior advisor for Kirk Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corporation.
“I’m thrilled with this opportunity, as there is a tremendous void in the marketplace of independently produced films aimed at families and younger audiences,” said Cohen.  “The wealth of experience that Dolphin brings from the television, digital, branding, licensing and merchandising worlds will help accelerate the creation of franchise properties within our feature film division.”
“During his long tenure at MGM, Charlie Cohen worked on several large properties across multiple platforms, which makes him ideally suited to lead Dolphin Films,” added O’Dowd.  “We couldn’t be happier that Charlie has joined us, as we feel he’s the perfect addition to a stellar cast of experienced executives involved in this partnership.”
The Dolphin Films/Open Road Films deal was negotiated by Ken Deutsch of O’Melveny and Myers for Dolphin and  Tom Ortenberg, Elliott Kleinberg, general counsel and executive vice president of Operations and Business Affairs, and Ben Cotner, senior vice president of Acquisitions on behalf of Open Road Films.  The introduction of Dolphin and Mattel was facilitated by CAA.

NBM HEADS TO SPX 2013;

Premiering SCIENCE: A DISCOVERY IN COMICS

Margreet de Heer and Dara Naraghi & Brent Bowman (PERSIA BLUES) To Appear

On September 14-15th, you can find some of the most prestigious names in comics at the 2012 Small Press Expo (aka SPX).
Unlike many conventions that are geared toward pop culture or corporately owned comics, SPX was created in 1994 to promote artists and publishers who produce independent comics. SPX hosts an annual festival that provides a forum for artists, writers and publishers of comic art in its various forms to present to the public comic art not normally accessible through normal commercial channels.
It’s one of NBM’s favorite shows and this year we’re proud to bring three of our talented authors with us and the debut of our newest title.
Margreet de Heer will bring her new book, Science: A Discovery in Comics and will be signing throughout the weekend.
Science: dull or hard to understand?
Not if you read this book!
The creators of Philosophy – a Discovery in Comics take on a new challenge, and explain the different scientific disciplines in clear, colorful chapters.
Who exclaimed “Eureka” and why?
Why did Galileo get into a fight with the Church?
What happens when you have your DNA tested?
All these questions and more are answered in a chronological journey from ancient times to modern Quantum Theory, with creators Margreet and Yiri as your witty guides.
A great comic book for anyone who wants to learn in a fun way the bigger framework of science, or brush up on what they learned in school.
Margreet will be appearing at the NBM booth throughout the weekend and will be signing both Science, as well as her previous book, Philosophy.
PERSIA BLUES
Also appearing are Dara Naraghi and Brent Bowman, creators of the recently released first volume of the trilogy, Persia Blues.
Minoo Shirazi is a rebellious young Iranian woman, struggling to define herself amidst the strict social conventions of an oppressive regime, and  the differing wishes of an overbearing father, in between life in Iran and  life in midwestern America. Minoo Shirazi is also a free-spirited adventurer  in a fantasy world, a place where aspects of modern America and ancient Persia meld into a unique landscape. And yet, neither of these women are the true Minoo Shirazi. At the intersection of guilt and freedom, family and self, ancient myths and modern enigmas, lies…Persia Blues.
Also attending the show are Brooke A. Allen (A Home For Mr. Easter) at Table L8 and Jesse Lonergan (Joe and Azat, Flower and Fade and an upcoming title that he’ll have mini comic excerpts from) at Tables N9-10.
We’ll also be offering all of our latest titles and prints from artists Rick Geary and Stan Mack are available for free for any $30 purchase, with a signed version free with a $50 purchase.

Throughout SPX, NBM can be found at tables G1-2.

Baltimore Comic-Con's Yearbook Returns!
Featuring Stan Sakai and Usagi Yojimbo!

tipin_letter_clr BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - September 3, 2013 - The Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to announce the return of the Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook, celebrating the creators appearing at the show.  This book of art features some of our guests interpreting the Usagi Yojimbo characters, sometimes in conjunction with their own creations, in a celebration of creator-owned properties.

As a bonus, we have a scavenger hunt of sorts. When you buy the book, you'll get a list of our 38 Yearbook contributors and their table numbers. Get 10 of them to sign it, and come back to the booth for your choice of an added print by either Frank Cho, Ray Fawkes, Michael Golden, Terry Moore, or Mark Texeira! For every 5 extra signatures beyond the first 10, you get an extra print!

Usagi Yojimbo was created by Stan Sakai and first published in 1984, launching in Albedo, a self-published anthology by Steve Gallacci, followed by an appearance in Critters from Fantagraphics in 1985, and finally its own series from the same publisher in 1987, all in black & white.  In 1993, Usagi made the jump to color at Mirage Publishing, and moved to Dark Horse in 1996, where it remains to this day.  Nearly 30 years of Usagi Yojimbo have seen print in book, TV, and digital formats.

"Stan is a great friend of the Baltimore Comic-Con," said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. "His timeless, classic characters are the perfect source for our guests and friends to interpret for the Baltimore Comic-Con's second ever Yearbook, and we adore the contributions, Stan's work, and Stan himself for allowing us to honor him in this fashion."

The art created for the 2013 Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook celebrating nearly 30 years of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo will be auctioned at this special event! Don't miss this opportunity to own original art featuring Stan's characters as depicted by artists including Roger Andrews, David Bullock, Jim Calafiore, Richard Case, Bernard Chang, Frank Cho, Steve Conley, Jason Copland, Jeremy Dale, Ray Fawkes, David Finch, John Gallagher, Agnes Garbowska, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Michael Golden, Jimmy Gownley, Ken Hunt, Chris Kemple, Roger Langridge, David Mack, Mark Mariano, Tradd Moore, Ryan Ottley, David Petersen, Brandon Peterson, Khoi Pham, Joe Prado, Ron Randall, Ivan Reis, Sara Richard, Craig Rousseau, Stan Sakai, Scott Christian Sava, Chris Schweizer, Walter Simonson, Edward Smith, Mark Sparacio, Mark Texeira, Christopher Uminga, Mark Wheatley, Rich Woodall, Thom Zahler, and Chrissie Zullo!
