PRETTY DEADLY ARRIVES TO MASSIVE FANFARE & AN IMMEDIATE SELL-OUT
Highly-anticipated series from Kelly Sue DeConnick & Emma Ríos
sells out on first day of release

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Ríos's PRETTY DEADLY #1, one of the most anticipated new releases of the year, has officially sold out at the distributor on its first day of release and will be going back to press for a second printing. DeConnick and Ríos's fantasy western, featuring Death's daughter in an Old West that's equally influenced by magical realism and Japanese exploitation films as it is by spaghetti westerns, has already garnered an astronomical amount of praise from fans, press, and fellow creators:

“One of the best comics debuts of the year.”
- Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

"DeConnick and Ríos fill this comic with mystery, adventure and uncertainty."
-Doug Zawisza, Comic Book Resources

"Pretty Deadly #1 is a fantastic debut issue by creators who are working in perfect tandem to tell one of the tightest stories I have seen in a #1 issue in a long time."
-Aaron Long, Comicosity

"The art team displays a terrific level of experimentation. Bellaire blends sensible, real world colors with bubblegum highlights; a freshly fired pistol trails soft, pink smoke, a captivating tale comes to live in vivid shades of orange and yellow, and the trail of a bullet leaves a purple streak against the cold blue of a twilight sky."
-Zach Wilkerson, Multiversity Comics

"From the first couple of pages all the way to the end [...], DeConnick and Ríos have managed to create a world that is so captivating and painfully beautiful that it’s impossible to tear yourself away from it."
-Toribee, Comics: The Gathering

"Pretty Deadly is not meant to be rapidly devoured. It is meant to be savored, allowing time to ruminate upon the symbolism, stare at the deluge of lines and color, and be swallowed by the depth of each character's stare."
-Vanessa Gabriel, Newsarama

PRETTY DEADLY #1 may still be on sale at your local retailer while supplies last. In addition, PRETTY DEADLY #1 is available digitally on the Image website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well as on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, and Android. The second printing of PRETTY DEADLY #1 will be in stores on 11/27 and can be pre-ordered now using Diamond Code SEP138208. PRETTY DEADLY #2 releases on 11/27 and can be pre-ordered now with Diamond Code SEP130627.

VIZ MEDIA’s PERFECT SQUARE IMPRINT DELIVERS NEW BEN 10 OMNIVERSE ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES IN OCTOBER

Ben Tennyson And Partner Rook Investigate A Distress Call Aboard A Stranded Spacecraft In A Full-Color Original Adventure Series Based On The Emmy-Winning Animated Kids Program

San Francisco, CA, October 9, 2013 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga, graphic novels and anime in North America, takes readers on an action-packed adventure in its new full-color original graphic novel series – BEN 10 OMNIVERSE.

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE, Vol. 1: GHOST SHIP features artwork by Alan Brown with story by Cory Levine and is now available under the company’s Perfect Square imprint. The title is rated ‘A’ for All Ages, and carries an MSRP of $7.99 U.S. / $9.99 CAN. A digital version is also currently available for $4.99 U.S. / CAN from the Perfect Square App, which has titles available for the Apple iPad® and iPad® Mini. The Perfect Square App is available from the iTunes store.

The BEN 10 OMNIVERSE graphic novels are inspired by Cartoon Network’s hit original animated series Ben 10 Omniverse, which is currently airing new episodes on Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. (ET/PT). Ben 10 Omniverse is the latest installment of the hit Ben 10 franchise and was developed by Men of Action, a Development/Production House dedicated to writing, conceptualizing, and developing work of exceptional quality, commercial viability, and explosive creativity.

For more than five years, Ben Tennyson has been saving the universe with his Omnitrix, which allows him to use the DNA of aliens to take on heroic new forms. But he’s never encountered a challenge quite like this! Teamed up with a new partner, Rook, who seriously needs to relax, Ben investigates the mysteries of a hidden underground alien city and has to battle a new enemy, Khyber, who has only one thing on his mind: hunting down Ben 10!

In the opening volume of the graphic novel series, Ben and Rook investigate a distress call that lands them on a stranded space ship with a secret... and puts them right where Khyber wants them, trapped with no way out while he and his shape-shifting dog hunt them down. Now Ben’s got to get off an abandoned vehicle that’s falling out of space, save himself and his partner from Khyber’s alien pet (who can turn into the natural enemy of any of Ben’s alien forms!), and figure out the mystery of the “Ghost Ship!”

“It’s truly an honor to welcome these new original BEN 10 OMNIVERSE graphic novels into the Perfect Square print and digital catalog,” says Editor Joel Enos. “The Ben 10 animated series has received international critical acclaim and won three Emmy Awards, and the OMNIVERSE stories build on and expand the mythology of the series in new ways while staying true to the series’ visual art style and tone. Our comics feature original adventures with some surprising cameos from past Ben 10 comics and cartoons, as well as some all-new characters created exclusively for the new Perfect Square corner of the Omniverse!”

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE, Vol. 1: GHOST SHIP artist Alan Brown has a love of comic art and cartoons that led him to a career as a storyboard and concept artist for a busy London agency, working for clients such as Lego and Ford. As a freelance artist and designer he has also created a variety of licensed artwork for Disney, Warner Bros. and the BBC, while continuing to provide comic art for small press and independent comics publishers.

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE, Vol. 1: GHOST SHIP writer Cory Levine is a former editorial staffer for Marvel Comics where he edited hundreds of collected editions of comic books, encyclopedic handbooks, special edition magazines and foreign-licensed comics including the company's well-received line of Soleil graphic album adaptations. In 2010 he founded First Edition Publishing, Inc., an end-to-end publishing solutions firm offering editorial packaging, graphic design and pre-press production services.

VIZ Media’s Perfect Square imprint focuses on delivering original comics, manga (graphic novels) and other children’s books with an emphasis on strong storytelling, eye-popping graphics, empowering themes, and a dash of irreverence, that captures the imagination of a whole new generation.

TwoMorrows Publishing remembers the life and career of animation legend Lou Scheimer

(RALEIGH, NC) TwoMorrows Publishing joins with the family and friends of Lou Scheimer in remembering the animation pioneer's life, and remarkable body of work. Scheimer passed away last Thursday at the age of 84.

"It was an honor to get to know Lou in the course of publishing our recent biography of him," said TwoMorrows publisher John Morrow. "It was a project that co-author Andy Mangels had labored over for several years, to make sure it did justice to Lou, and accurately documented his place in television history. Lou gave tirelessly of his time, energy, and enthusiasm for the project, which naturally was near and dear to him. Despite some serious health issues, Lou managed to make a rare and, as it turned out, final public appearance with us at Comic-Con last year to promote the book. Watching him interact with fans of his work, and seeing their response to him, were priceless moments that I'll always treasure."

TwoMorrows released Lou Scheimer: Creating The Filmation Generation just over a year ago, documenting the life and career of the founder of the renowned Filmation animation studio. Hailed as one of the fathers of Saturday morning television, Scheimer devoted over 25 years to providing animated excitement for TV and film. Always at the forefront, Filmation created the first DC Comics cartoons with Superman, Batman, and Aquaman, ruled the song charts with The Archies, kept Trekkie hope alive with the Emmy-winning Star Trek: The Animated Series, taught morals with Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and swung into high adventure with Tarzan, The Lone Ranger, and Zorro.
Forays into live-action included Shazam! and The Secrets of Isis, plus ground-breaking special effects work on Jason of Star Command and others. And in the 1980s, Filmation single-handedly caused the syndication explosion with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and its successors. In the book, Scheimer tells his entire story, including how his father decked Adolf Hitler, memories of schooling with Andy Warhol, and what it meant to lead the last all-American animation company through nearly thirty years of innovation.
"Like so many others, I grew up on Lou's cartoons, and the Groovy Ghoulies were my all-time favorite Scheimer production," said Morrow. "While Lou's passing is a sad occasion, I can't help but smile when I think back to all the enjoyment he gave me as a child. The man spent his life giving joy to the kids of America and the world. That's a powerful legacy for anyone to leave behind."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Bronze Goddess of Freedom Flies Again thanks to two Companies known for independent creations and innovative storytelling.  LIBERTY GIRL by Barry Reese, adapted from and based on works by Dennis Mallonee, is now available from Pro Se Productions via a license with Heroic Publishing.

Pro Se, a leader in New Pulp and Action/Adventure Fiction, and Heroic Publishing, a force in independent comics since the mid-1980s, proudly announce the debut of the first volume of adventures featuring one of Heroic’s best known characters- Liberty Girl.

The Liberty Girl is a World War II heroine ripped from her glory days and rocketed forward in time to today, where she’s needed more than ever!   Noted Pulp and Genre Fiction Author Barry Reese adapts Comic Creator and Publisher Dennis Mallonee’s debut Liberty Girl Mini Series into a prose novella.  Also included in this volume is an original Liberty Girl short story penned by Reese.  The book also opens with an introduction provided by Comic Book Legend Roy Thomas, the creator behind All Star Squadron, Infinity Inc., and more.

“It’s a really big deal,” Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of and Partner in Pro Se Productions, says, “when two companies from different aspects of the publishing arena, especially two independents known for their own unique stories and styles, bring the best they have together to produce landmark work.  LIBERTY GIRL is just that.  Arguably one of Heroic’s most recognized characters has now been interpreted and realized in prose by one of Pro Se’s- and to be honest, one of Genre Fiction’s- most talented authors.  Barry embraces the groundwork that Dennis built in the Liberty Girl comic series and builds a wonderful tapestry of heroism, power, and hope in what is truly one of the best works Pro Se has ever produced.”

“Sometimes,” Hancock continues, “everything just falls in place for a book.  The right concept, the right writer to not only handle transition from comics to prose, but to create a brand new story for the book as well, and the right voice to weigh in on such a character with an introduction.  Roy Thomas, the man who is responsible at least in part for me –and quite a few others, I know- pursuing my dreams to write, kicks off Pro Se’s LIBERTY GIRL with just the right words to set the mood for the stories to follow.  And then wrap that in an absolutely stunning cover by the ever-talented Jeff Hayes, and this book- there is no other word.  LIBERTY GIRL is the perfect storm of books.”

Edited by Thomas Fortenberry and Morgan Minor, LIBERTY GIRL is now available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in print and in Ebook at Amazon for the Kindle, at Barnes & Noble for the Nook, and in most formats at www.smashwords.com.

In coming weeks, Pro Se will announce more Heroic projects, including another Liberty Girl centered book as well as an anthology featuring another one of Heroic’s best known super heroines, Flare.

Project: Rooftop Announces
"The Middleman: Man About Town" Redesign Contest
The indie comics and TV star comes to Project: Rooftop looking for some fashion tips from artists just like you!
Project: Rooftop is proud to partner with Javier Grillo-Marxauch and Les McClaine for an official redesign contest for the titular star of their comic series The Middleman. "The Middleman: Man About Town" invites artists far and wide to take  on the challenge of imagining a new look for the Middleman in this official redesign contest. Both Grillo-Marxauch and McClaine will be joining our regular panel of judges to survey the entrants in this official redesign contest, and are also offering a range of prizes  for the winners.

"For years, I have followed Project: Rooftop and reveled in the unbridled creativity of its contributors - to have The Middleman get the P:R treatment is a dream come true for me," Grillo-Marxauch says. "I can't wait to see what how the site's readers interpret my and Les McClaine's creation!"

Due to the nature of The Middleman, artists have free reign to re-imagine the Middleman in various time periods and cultures. In the comics we've seen Middlemen from the Victorian age to barbarian times in addition to the well-known modern-day Middleman. And remember, Middleman can be female or male. Whatever era you choose, remember the key part of the Middleman's cannon: black trousers, white shirt, green jacket, black tie and boots.

As part of this official redesign contest, the creators have provided several prizes for the winners of "The Middleman: Man About Town:"
  •  First Place: A prize package that includes an original page of art by McClaine from The Middleman, graphic novel/DVD combo pack, a online portfolio review by Grillo-Marxauch and McClaine, and the winner's design featured in a future issue of  The Middleman.
  • Second Place: A original page of art from The Middleman by Les McClaine, along with a Middleman graphic novel/DVD combo pack.
  • Third Place: A Middleman graphic novel/DVD combo pack.

Entries for "The Middleman: Man About Town" should aim to create a new take on the hero that stays true to the character's concept and history and only revise their costume, as if your design was in the running to be used in current continuity. All entries must be received by December 4, 2013 at 5pm Eastern Time. As usual, check our guidelines, and save your submission as a .jpg, .,png or .gif with your full name as the file name. Send your submission as an attachment to projectrooftop@gmail.com with the subject line being "Entry for The Middleman: Man About Town," and make sure to include your name and website in the body of the e-mail.

Project: Rooftop (http://www.projectrooftop.com) is where cartoonists and illustrators bring their costume design skills to task in tribute to the superheroes and villains we've grown up with. This site is intended to promote the idea of superhero costume redesigning as a skill, specific to superhero media. We also aim to foster continued interest for these amazing characters and spotlight up-and-coming creators.
