INDUSTRY VETS FORM MAGNETIC PRESS,
New Publisher of
Premium Original Graphic Novels.

Los Angeles, CA (December 12, 2013) – Industry veterans Mike Kennedy and Wes Harris announced today the formation of MAGNETIC PRESS, a new publishing label with a focus on premium graphic novels by talent from around the world. Magnetic’s two founders came together around a shared desire to create a compassionate home for innovative creators and projects that have been underrepresented in the current comic and graphic novel marketplace, including new talent deserving a debut and established talent looking to establish a solid presence in the North American and English language audience.

Publisher Mike Kennedy previously served as Publisher of Archaia Entertainment during the two years the company received back-to-back Eisner Awards for Best Original Graphic Album, as well as numerous other Eisner and industry awards and nominations. Prior to entering the publishing industry, Mike held roles as both Creative Director and Senior Producer in the video game industry, creating original IP and narrative game design for publishers such as Electronic Arts, Namco, and Microsoft.  He has also been an avid writer, with numerous published titles to his name, including well-known properties such as STAR WARS, SUPERMAN, and ALIEN VS PREDATOR.

“The most exciting aspect of any creative field is the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from amazing talent,” says Kennedy.  “There’s an electrifying amount of talent out there, from around the world, all deserving wider attention, and we are thrilled to create a publishing program that’s built from the ground up to support them in their effort to pursue what they are so passionate about doing.”

CEO Wes Harris is the former VP of Publishing for Boom Studios, and has held senior roles at top entertainment companies such as Viz Media, White Wolf Publishing, and Meteor Entertainment.

“I love the idea of books as an expression of who you are – what you choose to read, to display on your coffee table, and what that says about you,” said Harris. “From the very start, from the talent we work with to the titles we select to the way the book feels in your hands, our top priority is creating a memorable reading experience and a book that you’re proud to have on your shelf.“

Magnetic Press’s debut catalog launches in Spring of 2014 and features works from Award-winning creators from the US, UK, France, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico.  Debut titles include Eisner Award-winner Dave Dorman’s WASTED LANDS, JD Morvan and Bengal’s NAJA and MEKA, F. Ruiz Velasco’s CULEBRA and LEGION OF BLOOD, Caio Oliveira’s SUPER-EGO, PROPHET HILL, and VIVID, Francisco Paronzini’s HUGO BROYLER, and Lucas Marangon’s THINKING OUT LOUD.  Additional titles are also in the works, and details on each title, with previews, will be released soon.

SOVEREIGN REIGNS SUPREME IN MARCH 2014

Gods, demons, and magic return in a new epic high fantasy series

SOVEREIGN #1

In a world where gods, demons, and magic have slipped into myth, SOVEREIGN tells the story of masked undertakers facing the undead with swords while civil wars threaten the delicate balance between colliding cultures. But out of the ashes of history rises a new threat and the promise that magic has not yet faded into mere memory.

Chris Roberson (Edison Rex, iZombie) joins artist Paul Maybury (POPGUN, Catalyst Comix) to bring to life a multi-layered series featuring Tolkien-esque story of war, magic, and the humanity that co-exists in both in SOVEREIGN #1.

SOVEREIGN is a much different take on the classic high fantasy genre. “So many of the fantasy stories I encountered growing up were set in worlds that were largely modeled on medieval Europe, in one way or another. Lots of white folks in feudal societies, castles and kings, that kind of thing. And I love a lot of those, but I thought it would be more interesting for me personally to look to other cultures for inspiration,” said Roberson. “Sovereign is set in a world in which there are a number of cultures in the mix, and all kinds of ethnicities and types, and the drama comes as much from the cultural interactions as it does from the monsters invading from another dimension.”

Roberson explained that part of the magic behind creating a powerful fantasy series is finding the right team. “Paul’s was the first name that occurred to me when I started thinking about what artist would be a good fit for the story, and the work that he’s done on the book so far suggests that I was right on the money,” said Roberson. “It looks amazing, and isn’t quite like anything else out there.”

SOVEREIGN #1 arrives in stores on 3/19 and is available for $2.99.

SOVEREIGN can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JAN140538.

The Silver Age Batman Next For Hardcover Treatment
IDW And The Library Of American Comics Next Team-Up!

San Diego, CA (December 11, 2013) – Renowned for its Eisner and Harvey Award-winning archival work, IDW’s The Library of American Comics will continue its collaboration with DC Entertainment by collecting the Batman’s Silver Age newspaper strips in a matching format to the Silver Age Superman series!

Hot on the heels of the successful hit Batman television show starring Adam West and Burt Ward that resulted in what can only be described as “Batmania,” the Batman newspaper strips debuted in 1966. Written by longtime Batman editor Whitney Ellsworth, with art by DC Comics giants Shelly Moldoff, Joe Giella, and Carmine Infantino, the newspaper strip was a huge success.

The first volume, reprinting all B&W dailies and color Sundays from 1966 and 1967, features an all-star list of Batman and Robin characters, including Catwoman, the Penguin, the Joker, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl! The 11 x 8.5” hardcover designed and edited by Dean Mullaney will feature a dust jacket cover by Pete Poplaski, and will be 256 pages, including an introduction by Joe Desris.

“Ellsworth and the artists perfectly captured the flavor of the television show,” Mullaney says. ‘It’s a tremendous amount of fun, both as nostalgia and as a unique creation of its time.”

Created in 1939 by Bob Kane, Batman has become an icon, a catalyst, and one of the most revered comic book properties of all time. With countless series, animated television shows, video games, and feature films under his utility belt, Batman perches on the top of American pop culture.

BOOM! STUDIOS
ANNOUNCES 'PEN & INK' PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTING KEY TITLES AND CREATORS

Day Men Pen & Ink Cover
Cover by Brian Stelfreeze
December 11,  2013 - Los Angeles, CA - Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the creation of the PEN & INK program, a new, limited line of publications designed to spotlight some of the comic book industry’s best creators and their work on BOOM! titles. The first book in the series will be DAY MEN: PEN & INK #1, which will focus on the first two issues with art from acclaimed artist Brian Stelfreeze (Wednesday Comics, Batman: Shadow of the Bat).
“We have a proud tradition here at BOOM! of working with phenomenal artists, both established talents and future stars who are just breaking into the industry,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The PEN & INK program is a carefully curated presentation of what we believe is some of the most dynamic and inspirational work being published in comics. It’s truly an honor to kick off the program by spotlighting Brian Stelfreeze’s acclaimed work. And we’ll be following it up with an amazing combination of fan-favorite creators and emerging talents. Whether you’re a fan of behind-the-scenes material, an aspiring creator, a student of the medium, or simply a collector of beautiful art, these will be gorgeous editions that celebrate the craft of comics.”
Each PEN & INK edition will be an oversized 11” x 17”, saddle-stitched, prestige presentation featuring the original line art from two issues of a series at near-actual size. Every page will be accompanied by annotations from the creative team, giving fans and aspiring creators unique insight into the behind-the-scenes creative process.
DAY MEN: PEN & INK #1 will contain Stelfreeze’s uncolored line work from issues #1 and #2 of DAY MEN and feature a host of thoughtful annotations from him and writers Matt Gagnon and Michael Alan Nelson.
“As a process junkie, the PEN & INK program is exactly the type of access to the creative process that I crave as a fan," shared Vice President of Publishing & Marketing, Filip Sablik. "We’ve been blessed to work with a number of luminary creators here at BOOM! along with introducing some really exciting new talent to the industry, and now fans will have a chance to share in our excitement when new pages arrive in the office. It’s been such a thrill to see Brian Stelfreeze create new sequential work that it seemed unfair to keep that process to ourselves. But Brian, Matt, and Michael are far from the only creators we’re planning on spotlighting this way. In the coming months, we’ll be announcing additional PEN & INK projects featuring some of my favorite established and emerging talent. Elevated yet a great value, PEN & INK is a great reflection of the BOOM! values.”
Created by Matt Gagnon (FREELANCERS) and co-written by Michael Alan Nelson (DC’s Supergirl, HEXED), DAY MEN is a vampire noir that brings Brian Stelfreeze back to drawing monthly comics for the first time since 2005. For thousands of years, the world has been controlled by the “50 Families”—a secret network of vampire covens engaged in a timeless struggle for power. But when the sun rises, the vampires are forced to employ the services of a human who acts as their daytime fixer and protector. Trained for centuries to be the mortal soldiers of their vampire employers, the Day Men go forth at sunrise, alone into the world, to do the bidding of their sleeping benefactors.
DAY MEN: PEN & INK #1 arrives in comic shops on January 8, 2014 with a cover price of $9.99 under Diamond order code OCT131001. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? REAL HEROES TAKES FLIGHT IN MARCH
Bryan Hitch’s new miniseries pits Hollywood celebrities against super evil forces
REAL HEROES #1

The celebrity stars of the blockbuster The Olympians films are about to take “method” to a whole new level. In Bryan Hitch’s all-new six-issue miniseries REAL HEROES, a group of actors who are used to playing superheroes on film are forced to don their capes and cowls in real life when a nefarious foe endangers their city.

REAL HEROES #1 is Hitch’s first foray into writing and drawing his own work, and hits the ground running with an explosion and a brutally-orchestrated fight to the death.

Hitch explained that there is more to REAL HEROES than just another superhero series. The characters are average celebrities faced with an enemy meant for their fictional counterparts. “The real stars of this story are the very fallible, very real actors. It's those characters that shape the story when they find themselves doing it for real,” said Hitch. “Robert Downey Jr. isn't really Tony Stark, Hemsworth isn't Thor, and Cavill isn't Superman. Imagine if they got to be? Very different story.”

REAL HEROES #1 arrives in stores on 3/26 and is available for $3.99.

A24 and Demarest team up on TUSK

A24 will distribute Kevin Smith’s epic twist on horror to the masses in 2014.

New York (December 10, 2013) –A24 and Demarest Films have teamed up on Kevin Smith’s latest film TUSK. The film, which stars Justin Long, Michael Parks, Genesis Rodriguez, and Haley Joel Osment, was born out of one of Kevin Smith’s immensely popular SModcasts. Currently in production, the modern-day monster movie was also written by Smith.  Sam Englebardt, David Greathouse, and Shannon McIntosh are producing.

A24 plans for a wide release of the film in the third quarter of 2014.

Said A24, “We had the privilege of visiting Kevin on the TUSK set and seeing some of his early footage. We can say with certainty that this movie will blow people’s minds. Truly one you’ll have to see to believe.”
"I'm as happy as the day Miramax bought Clerks back in '94! We're so lucky A24 fell in love with our walrus picture and jumped in the pool with us. I was a big fan of how they released The Bling Ring and Spring Breakers, so I was praying TUSK would take root there. If anyone knows how to bring this flick to the masses, it's them!” says Smith.

Demarest’s Sam Englebardt added, “We’re thrilled that A24 has joined us in backing Kevin’s wild, deviant vision. Tusk will be a horror movie for the ages and we couldn’t imagine a better partner in bringing it to the world.
TUSK follows Wallace (Long) a journalist on a mission. He finds the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (Parks), a worldwide adventurer with amazing tales and a curious penchant for walruses.

STARLIGHT: A SWASHBUCKLING SPACE ADVENTURE

Issue #1 of the much-anticipated Mark Millar and Goran Parlov series launches this March

So much for retirement! This March, meet Duke McQueen, a man who has long since settled down and left his days of saving the Universe and operating as the space hero everyone depended on—at least that’s what he thought. His wife long passed and his kids off embarking on their own adventures, Duke lives a quiet, solitary life until he receives an unexpected call from a distant world, calling him to action one last time.

This March begins an all new ongoing series with STARLIGHT #1, Mark Millar (JUPITER’S LEGACY, KICK-ASS, WANTED) and Goran Parlov's (Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Punisher MAX) much-anticipated first salvo in an intergalactic adventure that will have fans leaning in as they read.

STARLIGHT kicks off the inter-linked Millarworld Universe titles that will launch out of Kick-Ass 3's conclusion. “Plain and simple, this is the book that starts it all and you're getting on the ground floor here for a three years plan I have featuring nine or ten titles with the biggest artists in the comic-book industry,” said Millar. “Goran has been my favourite artist for the last couple of years and getting to work with him on a project that's so pivotal to my plans, the beginning of what I hope is something enormous, is really exciting to me.”

For STARLIGHT #1, Millar was inspired by the old science-fiction serials from the '40s and '50s, and he has long wondered what would happen next in them. “One day they'd come back to Earth and settle down and have kids and that's exactly what Starlight is... the story of a space-hero who returned and nothing exciting ever happened to him again until he reached retirement age and he had this call back to the stars. I've always been a fan of old gunslinger stories… the idea of this man who had been famous for his excellence getting one last chance to show what he can do. Applying that myth to a space-hero, to an iconic sci-fi character, seemed really interesting to me and the character is so warm and likeable as well as gruff and, I suppose, bad-ass that he really just wrote himself. Goran and I are very proud of this book.”

STARLIGHT arrives in stores on 3/5 and is available for $2.99.

STARLIGHT with Cover A by John Cassaday can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JAN140531, while Cover B by series artist Goran Parlov can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JAN140532.

Judge Dredd Takes On Mega-City Two
New Mini-Series Debuts From IDW

San Diego, CA (December 10, 2013) – This January, duty calls Judge Dredd to the West Coast, in the destructive new miniseries Mega-City Two: City of Courts! After entering a partnership with Rebellion/2000 AD, IDW has explored Dredd’s past in Year One, and taken him “Into the Cursed Earth” in his ongoing title, but with a truly unique creative team on Mega-City Two, Dredd will go up against the unfamiliar and depraved like never before!

Mega-City Two marks the comics-writing debut of Eisner Award-winning journalist and Dredd aficionado Douglas Wolk (Reading Comics). Art chores will be handled by powerhouse Ulises Farinas (TRANSFORMERS: Heart of Darkness, Catalyst Comix), whose precise linework showcases the oddities of Judge Dredd’s world in stunning detail. Rounding out the creative team, colorist Ryan Hill brings the incredible structure in Farinas’ work to life. Mega-City Two will also feature homage variant covers that pay tribute to iconic films, with art by Joe Corroney, NAR!, E.J. Su, and more!

In the year 2094, a secret mission puts Dredd behind the wheel of a Lawcruiser in Mega-City Two, the West Coast megalopolis that sprawls around what was once Los Angeles. And he’s about to discover that the rules—and the laws—are very different in a city where image is everything...

"Ulises, Ryan and I are going to show you a vision of Dredd’s world that you’ve never seen before," Wolk says. "We’re yanking the East Coast’s toughest lawman out of his element, and plunging him into the bizarre, sunlit depths of post-apocalyptic California. There’ll be studio stars and cycle cultists, cartoon predators and beachfront terrors—plus, of course, ultraviolence, musical numbers and the occasional thrill-powered salute to Joan Didion."

“Mega-City Two remains a criminally underexplored facet of Dredd's world,” said 2000A.D./Rebellion Editor-in-chief, Matt Smith, “and Doug and Ulises are having a ball crafting an environment, not only geographically, but ideologically the opposite of MC-1. Dredd is the proverbial fish out of water, and a lot of the fun comes from seeing that East Coast mentality clash with the laid-back attitudes of MC-2. Dredd fans shouldn't miss this really quite unique mini-series.”

Judge Dredd has had a busy year at IDW in 2013, and 2014 already looks to be filled with boot-stomping action with Mega-City Two!

Yoe Books! Falls Down Another Rabbit Hole With Alice In Comicland
Alice Seen Through The Comic Book Looking Glass

San Diego, CA (December 9, 2013) – Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most beloved novels ever written as well as considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre.  So it only makes sense that IDW Publishing and Yoe Books! would partner up to collect the fantastic and wild variations of Alice as seen in comic books and comic strips from the Golden Age and beyond in Alice in Comicland.

Coming this March, Alice in Comicland is a 160 full-color page collection of comic books and comic strip stories featuring Alice that range from humor to horror by masters like Alex Toth, Walt Kelly, The Simon and Kirby Studio, Dan DeCarlo, David Berg, George Carlson, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, R.F. Outcault, Charles Schulz and more.  The Kelly, DeCarlo and Schulz strips are reproduced directly from rare original art making this a truly unique piece.

For the first time one place we get to see Alice get the MAD Magazine and Archie's Mad House treatment and oh boy, does it get weird and wonderful! Alice gruesomely starring in the banned horror comic book stories of the 1950s, riding on a flying saucer, meeting Santa Claus, as a teeny-bopper, hanging out with famous comic characters…

“Lewis Carroll's Alice is one of the most imaginative creations in history,” says Craig Yoe, “As I dug into comic history I was thrilled to find how many cartoonist geniuses were inspired by Wonderland and had done there own very unusual twists on Alice in every comics genre. This is an amazing, exciting book sure to delight Alice and comics fans!

Mark Burstein, President of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America provides a special introduction to this must-have collection for fans of the novel, the comics, and of course, both.  Just remember, one book will make you taller, and the other book will make you shorter, please read accordingly.
