CAGE HEROES FIGHTING THEIR WAY TO YOU THIS FALL FROM DYNAMITE!

MMA-BASED SUPERHERO SERIES DEVELOPED BY KEVIN EASTMAN
AND MMA MANAGER IAN PARKER LAUNCHING IN NOVEMBER

July 7, 2015, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite is proud to announce a collaborative agreement with Surge Licensing, Inc., Ian Parker, and Mark Mastrandrea to develop a comic book series based on the brand new property Cage Hero. The four-issue series will debut this November, released monthly as single-issue comics, both digitally and in print, and collected later into trade format. Cage Hero is an all-ages action-adventure series in the tradition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teen Titans, and Karate Kid -- a youth-based Mixed Martial Arts property that inspires health, fitness, skill, and teamwork to become a real hero.

"Dynamite is excited to be bringing this property to the comic book world, and telling its first story with these compelling characters Ian and Kevin have created," says Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Cage Hero taps into the continued rising popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, and we think it will find a great audience with those who are fans of the sport."

In Cage Hero, Ryder Stone, a small town middle school student and wrestling star raised by a strict grandfather, finds himself on a path to meet his true destiny when he is recruited to lead a super-powered team of mixed martial artists known as The Cage Heroes! Trained in their own unique martial art disciplines, all connected by a secret past, this new team will need to dig deep within themselves to protect the world from an international evil network known as The Shadow Empire. The race for control of the universe has begun, and evil has the upper hand. With only a handful of teenagers to stand in the way, can they find the hero within and stop them?

"It is time that this generation has its own group of heroes to look up to. We have created that," says Ian Parker. "With the sport of MMA on the rise and superheroes as popular as ever, we have found a fun and inspiring way to combine the two."

Cage Hero was created by MMA Manager/Personality Ian Parker and Mark Mastrandrea. Working closely with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman to craft the characters and world inspired by Ian's own fighting knowledge and experience, and his love for comics. The creative team on the comic book series will include Rik Hoskin scripting, Renato Rei providing the dynamic artwork, and Ross Campbell on colors, with Ian and Kevin personally overseeing all aspects of production.

MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world today. Each MMA event commonly reaches over one million viewers. In the early existence of MMA, it was only a sport that adults could participate in; in this day and age, MMA is taught to men, women, and children. It is primarily taught to children to find their inner strength and to become disciplined at a young age.

"We couldn't be more excited to launch an MMA-inspired comic series with an all-star cast of creators and content developers," says Elan Freedman, Surge Licensing's VP. "The world has seen the magic created through a partnership with Kevin Eastman. Add in the sporting knowledge of Ian and Mark with the publishing prowess of Dynamite, and you have a recipe for success."

Dynamite Entertainment's Cage Hero comic books and graphic novels will be available to consumers through the comic book specialty market, and the graphic novel collection will be available at major bookstore chains, online booksellers, and independent bookstores courtesy of Diamond Book Distributors. Cage Hero comics will also be available for purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital. Fans and retailers are encouraged to follow Dynamite Entertainment and Cage Hero's official social media channel for the latest updates regarding creative teams and release dates.

SDCC 2015: UNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS AND COMIC BOOK GIANT DARK HORSE ENTERTAINMENT SIGN FIRST-LOOK DEAL

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA – July 7, 2015 – Universal Cable Productions (UCP) continues to expand its powerhouse producing talent and build upon the studio’s genre footprint by signing a first-look deal with legendary comic book publisher, Dark Horse Entertainment (“The Mask,” “Hellboy”).  The deal announced today will focus on developing and producing scripted programming from their extensive comics library as well as new material.   Discussions for the deal began at Comic Con in 2014 when Dark Horse introduced UCP executives to some of their top writers and artists. Over the last year, those conversations continued and have yielded multiple television projects with direct involvement from the comics creators.
“Dark Horse Entertainment has an incredible roster of fantastical, witty and mind bending stories,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President of Development, Universal Cable Productions. “Their brand has conquered multiple media platforms and boasts iconic books that have attracted the highest level of writers.  It’s going to be a wild and imaginative ride.”
UCP will collaborate with Dark Horse to bring their unique and fresh approach to the creative process. Together they will maximize Dark Horse’s network of talented comic creators and robust library of content to develop character driven concepts for television intended to resonate with their current fan base. Dark Horse President and founder Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg, SVP of Production, have enjoyed great success for the last two decades; no strangers to television, they also currently executive produce Syfy’s “Dark Matter”.
“As the landscape of narrative storytelling evolves, Dark Horse is thrilled to be working in the golden age of television with Universal Cable Productions. Their creative team has embraced the spirit of the Dark Horse brand and we’re proud to be partnered with them.” said Richardson.
Projects currently in development:
Harrow County - Emmy has always known that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and the restless dead. On the eve of her 18th birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures and to the land itself in a way she never imagined, for she is the reincarnation of a powerful witch who was put to death on the very day Emmy was born. For this reason, the townsfolk mean to kill her too. In order to survive, Emmy must embrace the unusual powers at her command.  This project is based on the brand new book written by Cullen Bunn (“The Damned,” “The Sixth Gun”) and illustrated by Tyler Crook (“Bad Blood”).
The Umbrella Academy - Nine years after parting ways, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers, must figure out how to work together to save the world. Created by Gerard Way (lead singer of “My Chemical Romance,” and writer of “The True Lies of the Fabulous Killjoys”) and Gabriel Ba (Daytripper); Bluegrass films is also attached to executive produce.
Back Up - In the near future, a new technology allows people to be backed up the same way we now back up our computers—but instead of protecting against drive failure, these backups protect against death. This project is based on a feature script by Tom Vaughn.  Kenny Golde is set to write and executive produce, Brad Anderson (“Zoo”, “Almost Human”) is in negotiations to direct.  Jim Wedaa is also attached to executive produce.
Concrete - After his subconscious is transplanted into a hulking stone body, Ronald Lithgow must come to terms with his new form and try to live a normal life.  This Eisner award-winning title is the opus of comics legend Paul Chadwick.
Dark Horse joins UCP’s leading producer line-up, including: horror icon Wes Craven; creator and executive producer of UCP’s critically acclaimed “Mr. Robot”, Sam Esmail; Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment, BenderSpink; and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.
UCP’s extensive library of genre, fantasy and science fiction projects in the works include: with Syfy “Childhood’s End,” the first-ever adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s iconic novel starring Charles Dance, Mike Vogel and Julian McMahon; “Brave New World,” based on Aldous Huxley’s classic novel which is being developed alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television; “The Magicians,” based on Lev Grossman’s popular trilogy; and Wes Craven’s “The People Under The Stairs,” based on the 1991 film; and “We Are All Completely Fine,” based on book by Daryl Gregory. DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES
BETTY BOOP PUBLISHING DEAL

July 7, 2015, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite Entertainment, a leading publisher of English language comic books and graphic novels, is proud to announce a publishing deal with Fleischer Studios and King Features Syndicate that would bring Betty Boop, the first female animated screen star, to comics for the first time in over twenty years.

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment, says, "Betty Boop is timeless, like Superman, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, or Louis Armstrong. She's a fixture of American culture, with such a wide appeal that her image can be found anywhere from a young child's wardrobe to the toughest biker's tattoos. Every generation over the past 85 years has embraced her charm and personality. Personally, I can recall her appearance in the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit as the defining moment in which I first fell in love with the character. We hope that Dynamite's upcoming line of original Betty Boop comic books and graphic novels will serve as the defining moment for a whole new generation of 'Boopers'."

First introduced in 1930, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his Talkartoons series, the first "talkies" of animation, which Max's company, Fleischer Studios, produced for Paramount. Mae Questel provided Betty's distinctive voice. By 1932, Betty -- considered to be the first and only female animated screen star -- had taken the country by storm. Betty starred in more than 100 cartoons, 90 of which are included in the official Betty Boop series, which ended in 1939. Since then, Betty has appeared in dozens of hit movies, television specials, and commercials. She was the first cartoon character to be profiled by A&E's Biography series.

Today, as the worldwide exclusive licensing agent for Betty Boop, King Features works closely with Fleischer Studios to keep Betty entertaining millions of fans and collectors worldwide. Betty Boop's popularity shines through her prevalence in pop culture. She is one of the most popular and successful licensed characters in entertainment history, with nearly 200 licensees in the United States and nearly twice as many internationally that produce quality products bearing Betty's likeness in virtually every category.

Betty Boop will be solicited in an upcoming edition of Diamond Comic Distributors' Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market. IDW, Edgar Rice Burroughs, And Heritage Auctions Team-Up To Support
The Kubert School
One Of A Kind Artist’s Editions Benefit The Joe Kubert Scholarship!

San Diego, CA (July 7, 2015) – Joe Kubert’s lasting legacy simply cannot be overstated; as an artist, an editor and an educator, Kubert excelled at everything he set his mind too. His work continues to serve as an everlasting inspiration to comic fans and professionals alike. This August IDW Publishing is pleased to help celebrate this legacy alongside Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Heritage Auctions and The Joe Kubert School by auctioning off 22 original illustrations by 23 artists, each hand drawn on special blank covers on Joe Kubert’s Tarzan of the Apes Artist’s Edition. All proceeds from the sale of these very special books will go directly to The Joe Kubert Scholarship Fund.

"All of us at Heritage Auctions have a deep and abiding respect for Joe Kubert and his legacy as both a pioneering artist and a teacher,” said Todd Hignite, Comic Art expert and Vice President of Heritage Auctions. “It means a lot to us to be a part of this project and to do something that benefits Joe’s school and nurtures the next generation of comic book artists.”

To date, IDW has produced more than three-dozen Artist’s Editions, four of them winning the prestigious Eisner Award. Joe Kubert has been the subject of three AE books to date, with another coming this fall. Tarzan of the Apes was the first of Kubert’s Artist’s Editions, and a number of these books were printed with special blank covers that were intended to be remarqued by Kubert; sadly, his passing came before he was able to work on them. Now, a wealth of great artists have stepped forward to pay tribute to one of comics’ true legends, and also to help inaugurate the Joe Kubert Scholarship Fund.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring together an all-star line-up of artists to pay tribute to Joe,” said IDW President Greg Goldstein. “ Who knows? It’s entirely possible the next great superstar in our industry might benefit from this scholarship.”

Original covers have graciously been created by Neal Adams, Sergio Aragones, Lee Bermejo, Amanda Conner, Geoff Darrow, Jan Duursema and Tom Mandrake, Dave Gibbons, Mike Kaluta. Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee, Mike Mignola, Kevin Nowlan, Alex Ross, Mark Schultz, Walter Simonson, Jeff Smith, Bil Stout, Tim Truman, Rick Veitch, Lee Weeks, and Tom Yeates!

“It was my great honor to work with Joe Kubert on the first Tarzan Artist’s Edition,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “While saddened that Joe never got to complete the cover remarques, I know he would have been overwhelmed by all the artist’s, his peers and former students, who stepped forward to make the Joe Kubert Scholarship Fund a reality—a truly worthwhile tribute.”

"On behalf of the students and faculty of the Kubert School,” said Pete Carlsson, Senior Art Director, Tell-A-Graphics, "I want to thank everyone who generously gave their time and talents to create the Joe Kubert Scholarship Fund. Joe would be deeply moved by the efforts of so many people working toward something he felt so strongly about: helping the students."

Be sure to stop by the Heritage Auctions booth (#900) to see Michael Kaluta’s cover in person this week at San Diego Comic Con! And you can see all of the covers available right here: http://www.idwpublishing.com/idw-edgar-rice-burroughs-and-heritage-auctions-team-up-to-support-the-kubert-school/

For Immediate Release: Dark Horse Comics Announces Christmas in July & Major HELLBOY & THE BPRD News

iZOMBIE co-creator Chris Roberson and Award-winning artist Paolo Rivera join the Mignolaverse
FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND artist Ben Steinbeck to illustrate HELLBOY & THE BPRD: 1953
Dark Horse Comics to Publish HELLBOY: WINTER SPECIAL
Writer John Arcudi to Conclude His Acclaimed Run on BPRD
(July 7, 2015) And you thought the fireworks ended on the Fourth of July? In advance of San Diego Comic Con 2015, Dark Horse Comics revealed today a series of major announcements for the strange, shared Mignolaverse of comic books and graphic novels comprised of Hellboy, Abe Sapien, BPRD, Frankenstein Underground, Lobster Johnson and Witchfinder. In a year in which a new dinosaur has been named after Mike Mignola’s most famous creation and Dark Horse Comics has teased that “the impossible will happen” in the Mignolaverse, today’s news brings still more surprises: a new series, a new one-shot special,  new high profile collaborators and the departure of a longtime writer.
  • Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and acclaimed Frankenstein Underground artist Ben Stenbeck will reunite to launch the new series Hellboy and the BPRD: 1953. Starting in October, timed to Halloween, they will release two one shots that follow Hellboy to England for his first-ever ghost hunt. Hellboy is joined by Professor Bruttenholm in the field to fight the phantom hand of a murderer and a demonic water spirit in stories reminiscent of the early Mignola masterpiece The Corpse.
  • Next January, the upcoming Hellboy Winter Special one-shot will include contributions of major, still unannounced comic book artists and will include the first ever Mignolaverse story co-written by Chris Roberson, the co-creator of iZOMBIE. Roberson and Mignola will co-write a 12 page story illustrated by Michael Walsh (Secret Avengers). The following month, Roberson will debut as the ongoing co-writer for Hellboy & The BPRD, with Mignola, working with artist Eisner & Harvey Award winning art team Paolo Rivera (Daredevil) and Joe Rivera.
  • Next year will also see the conclusion of John Arcudi’s acclaimed run on BPRD which started in 2004. His run will conclude with issue 147 when BPRD: HELL ON EARTH concludes.
“I'm excited,” said Mike Mignola. “I'm always excited to work with Ben Stenbeck and it's great to finally see his take on Hellboy. And I'm excited about working with Chris Roberson--He's bringing a wonderful new energy and a lot of new ideas to Hellboy AND THE BPRD (and a couple other books we aren't ready to talk about yet). And I'm excited about the amazing way John Arcudi is wrapping up BPRD HELL ON EARTH. Of course we are all sorry to see him leave the title but he is doing such an amazing job on his way out. I will be forever in his debt--He is really responsible for making the BPRD what it is and while I'm excited about where that book is going (can't say anything about that yet) everything we do in the future will be built on top of the rock solid foundation John created.”
"I've been an enormous fan of Hellboy since the very beginning and I've got the action figure and lunch box to prove it,” said Chris Roberson. “BPRD has been and remains one of my all-time favorite series, so getting the opportunity to work with Mike Mignola in exploring Hellboy's early days as a BPRD agent is an incredible thrill.”
“I won’t lie; it’s kinda sad,” said John Arcudi. “Mike and Scott handed me this universe so long ago, and to say it’s been a creatively rewarding experience doesn’t even start to cover it.  From day one on up, I always worked with some of the very best artists in comics, and we’re talking about eleven straight years here!  Of course I’m happy about that, and about having seen the Hell on Earth arc through from beginning to end -- but I know there’s still a lot of story to tell, and I don’t want to go stale on this team after the huge solid they did for me, trusting me to play in this fantastic universe.  That wouldn’t be right.  I want to go out while the stories still feel fresh to me, and to Mike, and to Scott."
I was shocked when John said he wanted to move on," said Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie. "He’s been essential to growing Mike’s world, the first guy we trusted to bring his own personality to the big stories, making the characters his own in lots of ways. For all the planning that goes into the Mignola books, there are actually things in John's climactic run of BPRD that we never thought we’d do. He’s leaving BPRD with a bang. After Hell on Earth, we're tackling Mike's biggest mythological material, bringing in other voices like Chris Roberson to tell this next wave of stories, and everyone kicking in will be reading and rereading John’s work, me included, to make sure we get it right."
