BOOM! STUDIOS ANNOUNCES WALT BECKER'S

DEBUT COMIC BOOK, LAST REIGN: KINGS OF WAR

At the end of civilization, tyrants rule the land with an iron grip.

Only the Kings of War can ensure this is their Last Reign!

July 17th, 2008 - - Los Angeles, CA - BOOM! Studios is proud to announce LAST REIGN: KINGS OF WAR, a new four-issue mini-series created by director Walt Becker and written by FALL OF CTHULHU's Michael Alan Nelson. An apocalyptic story of chivalric knights in a techno-nightmare future, LAST REIGN: KINGS OF WAR is a high-action sci-fi tale with brilliant covers by Karl Richardson.

Best known as the director of VAN WILDER and WILD HOGS, Becker first creative outing was LINK, a science-fiction novel about paleoanthropology and mankind's extraterrestrial origins. A longtime fan of science fiction and fantasy, Becker will bring to comics his vision of futuristic knights who fight to survive and restore order in the ravaged wastes of a bleak tomorrow.

"I love comics in the same way I love films - they both tell stories visually," said Becker. "I also love the loyal fan base, and with an idea this big, I wanted to not only conceptualize the world through pictures but also to build a grass-roots following for this entirely new universe."

LAST REIGN: KINGS OF WAR will be scripted by Micahel Alan Nelson, no stranger to BOOM!. In the past few years, Nelson has written several series for BOOM!, including the critically acclaimed ENIGMA CIPHER, DOMINION and FALL OF CTHULHU, the ongoing monthly series that continues to be one of BOOM!'s top selling books. Nelson has also contributed to the successful anthology CTHULHU TALES.

"I've literally been given the world," said Nelson. "Walt's vision for the future, filled with Middle Age influence, is a world rife with conflict. This is fertile ground for our imaginations to grow. This will be a different book than my previous work, but fans will recognize the way I mine a plot and its characters for tension. It's just that, this time, I'll doing it with freaking knights in the future!"

LAST REIGN: KINGS OF WAR #1 features a cover by Karl Richardson, item order code: JUN083748.

Steve Niles Joins Radical’s Comic-Con Panel and Signing Schedule (Radical Booth #2806)

July 15th, 2008, LOS ANGELES – A chilling vision of the future unveils a world where the police now patrol for crimes of the imagination. Religious beliefs, along with any tales of false heroes, idols or gods, are illegal. Called to duty to stop a murder spree, Detective Philip Khrome finds himself face to face with killers born of grim reality with old world superstition and everything is not what it seems.

While looking to develop a new titles outside of the Hercules and Caliber genres,Radical Publishing was approached by Steve Niles who wanted to bring to life a deftly mix of science fiction and horror in a thrilling new miniseries called, City of Dust. To promote Radical’s upcoming October release, Steve Niles will not only sign free promotional books of City of Dust, but will also take part in Radical Publishing’s Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 25th from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. in Room 10. City of Dust #1 of 5 will be a 48 page prestige format comic retailing for $3.99. Subsequent issues will be 28 page comics retailing for $2.99

“CITY OF DUST blew me away,” exclaimed Barry Levine, Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher. “I love the concept behind Niles’ dark, desperate, dystopian world and the characters that inhabit it. Detective Philip Khrome is a conflicted soul as only Steve can deliver. Radical is going big with this, we’ve commissioned covers from artists like Arthur Suydam, Clint Langley and Lucio Parrillo to kick off the first issue and expect our fans to reap the benefits from our unique promotional events for this title. It all starts at Comic-Con with our preview book. I’m so happy to see Steve on board, not only for signing, but to join the names of Jim Steranko and Ian Edginton for our Comic-Con panel.”

In discussing Radical Publishing, Steve Niles states, “The artwork is what attracted me. Barry(Levine) sat me down and let me look at these artists and I was like ‘I can do a book that looks like this? -- I’m in, and that’s what triggered the idea of CITY OF DUST. I’m really excited about this whole thing. I love the way they work. They’re REALLY accommodating. I’m so over committed, it’s not even funny, after years of rejection I can’t say no to anything, but Barry has been so accommodating to that, putting the project ahead of the schedule and I really appreciate that. Radical gives me breathing space and I think it’s panning out. The double-sized first issue is representative of that. They want perfection on every page with the art and I’m happy they do because the end result is beautiful.”

Steve Niles will be signing at the Radical Publishing booth at the following times below.

IDW PUBLISHING RELEASES BEN TEMPLESMITH’S NEW MINISERIES, WELCOME TO HOXFORD

(San Diego, July 17, 2008) Werewolf necrophilia and talking rats are just a small part of the dark, creepy action in Ben Templesmith’s new miniseries, Welcome to Hoxford, debuting in August from IDW Publishing. The co-creator of 30 Days of Night (with writer Steve Niles), Templesmith has built quite a fan following in recent years, including critical and sales successes with titles he has both written and created artwork for, including Wormwood Gentleman Corpse and Singularity 7.

Written and illustrated by Templesmith, Welcome to Hoxford is a horrific new series that features a unique and nasty take on werewolves. In the debut issue, Raymond Delgado is the newest inmate at the Hoxford Correctional Facility and Mental Institution. He has no hope of release, parole, rehabilitation, or decent conversation. Ray hasn’t been taking his medication. No surprises there. On a good day, he’ll tell you he’s Zeus and only bite your arm off—literally. On a bad day, you won’t have time to scream to the prison guard for help. But Dr Jessica Ainley, his doctor for five years, wants to help Ray and can’t understand why the newly privatized, corporately-run prison won’t give her access to her patients. And why people are always transferred into Hoxford, but no records show anyone ever transferring back out.

“It’s odd,” said Templesmith. “But the whole reason this book exists is because my work has been banned from a few prisons. I’m told it’s among the darkest work I’ve ever done, and I don’t mean the amount of black ink I’ve been using.”

IDW will also release Templesmith’s The Art of Wormwood in August, the third such art book he has produced.

Welcome to Hoxford #1 will be available from Comic Book Retailers in August 2008.

Exclusive: See Fifteen Pages of Kyle Baker’s Brilliant Comic ‘Nat Turner’

Kyle Baker is one of America's best and funniest independent cartoonists. His series "The Bakers," about the exploits of his family, is an all-ages classic, and his just-released book, How to Draw Stupid, is as useful a guide as any comics artist could hope for. But there's a a serious side to Baker, too, as his Eisner Award–winning series "Nat Turner" proves. Collected for the first time, this brilliantly drawn, starkly told history of a legendary slave rebellion is out this month from Abrams. This week on the Comics Page, we're proud to present an exclusive fifteen-page preview from Nat Turner.

The Union returns to print with TPB featuring three issues, extras, and the print debut of a 2nd-generation Adams

Division 18: The Union of Novelty Costumed Performers is returning to comic shops everywhere this fall via trade paperback. The black-and-white comedy by Matt Bergin and Jeremy Donelson was originally planned as a 3-issue miniseries, but despite a successful, well-received debut issue, circumstances dictated that the creators and publisher, Silent Devil, "wait for the trade."

Certainly the always uncertain monthly market for independent/small press comics played a part in this decision, but an even bigger reason for the change in direction was that Silent Devil head honcho, Christian Beranek, was tied up in planning his latest venture, Disney's Kingdom Comics graphic novel imprint, which he launched this summer with Ahmet Zappa. Rather than indefinitely delay Division 18 issue by issue, the creators and publisher agreed the collection was the way to go to regain their momentum and give retailers and readers a reason to Support the Union once more.

The new Division 18: The Union of Novelty Costumed Performers collection includes the popular debut, "Five Hunnies"; two new full-length stories, "White Collar Crooks" and "The Union Files"; and bonus content such as an annotated "History of Da' Union," which chronicles the genesis of Jimmy the Snake, Fat Louie, and the rest of the crew. The trade also features the print debut of Josh Adams, youngest son of legendary artist Neal Adams. The junior Adams debuted his Web comic, The Greatest, earlier this year at his site, whatwouldjoshdo.com, but his guest spot on pencils in "The Union Files" will mark his first appearance on the printed page on comic store shelves.

The Division 18 trade paperback appears on page 326 of the July Diamond Previews catalog and is ready for pre-order:

BOOM! STUDIOS ANNOUNCES NEW PROJECT

FROM STEPHEN BALDWIN AND ANDREW COSBY

THE REMNANT

EXCLUSIVE SDCC'08 PREVIEW BOOK ON SALE AT THE BOOM! STUDIOS BOOTH (#2543)

STEPHEN BALDWIN TO SIGN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY!

July 16th, 2008 - Los Angeles, CA - BOOM! Studios is proud to announce THE REMNANT, a new project created by Stephen Baldwin with a story by Baldwin and EUREKA TV series creator Andrew Cosby. To celebrate this new series, BOOM! Studios will have available at its booth a special-edition preview book priced at five dollars during the upcoming Comicon San Diego later this month. Baldwin will also be signing at the BOOM! booth Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th.

A supernatural thriller in the vein of 24, THE REMNANT will explore the fundamental questions of human life and our perception of reality.

"I wanted to do a comic that asked the big questions but answered them in little ways," said Baldwin. "Philosophy and spirituality are complex beasts, but I believe literature's purpose is to contextualize these tricky subjects into entertaining stories that speak, not preach, to the reader."

Caleb Monroe, the critically acclaimed writer from NEGATIVE BURN and PARABLE, will script THE REMNANT under the direction of Baldwin and Cosby with art by soon to be fan-favorite Julian Totino Tedesco.

The 16-page preview book includes a sneak peek of the first few pages of THE REMNANT, including exclusive preliminary sketches by series artist Julian Totino Tedesco and series cover artist Paul Azaceta.

THE REMNANT preview book will be a great launching point for this groundbreaking series for collectors and curious fans alike.

PRESS RELEASE - STEVE NILES AND MIKE MAYHEW GO SAVAGE WITH SHADOWLINE THIS OCTOBER!This October horror goes SAVAGE with Shadowline!

14 July 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - After illustrating covers with many of the best and brightest superheroes in comics, Mike Mayhew returns to interiors as 30 DAYS OF NIGHT writers Steve Niles and Dan Wickline craft a horrific tale of man's primal nature unleashed in October's SAVAGE.

"As a kid, I was always more drawn to horror comics, but I've never had the opportunity return to that as an adult," said Mayhew. "SAVAGE is my chance to take everything I loved so much about the genre and run with it. The story Steve conceived with Dan hits every note I was hungry to hit and despite this being Jeff Frank's debut, he knocks the script out of park with Dan's help. Everyone involved knows and loves horror like nobody's business."

With SAVAGE, the creators aim to hit every aspect of the horror genre - from madmen, murderers and most of all, monsters - as the series culminates an all-out war between bigfoot and a clan of werewolves.

Shadowline Publisher Jim Valentino added, "We've been looking for a good horror story for a while and Steve, Jeff and Dan have given us one we can (ahem!) sink our teeth into. And Mike's artwork is nothing short of superlative! This is one to read under the covers...with a flashlight."

SAVAGE #1, a 32-page full color comic book for $3.50, will go on sale October 29th.

And Help Children Develop A Lifelong Love Of Reading

San Francisco, CA, July 14, 2008 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has teamed up with Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden to promote literacy. Oden will be featured in the campaign using SLAM DUNK, the exciting new basketball-themed manga (graphic novel) series to help promote the love of reading.

VIZ Media will donate copies of several of their popular manga titles including the highly anticipated SLAM DUNK manga series (rated T for Teens) to Greg Oden’s charity, Oregon Mentors. Oregon Mentors works to expand positive life opportunities for all young Oregonians by connecting them with caring mentors http://oregonmentors.org.

Oden, the 250-pound, 7-foot tall, national phenomenon who was picked No. 1 overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the recent 2007 NBA draft, will also make a special in-person appearance in the VIZ Media Booth #4113 at the 2008 Comic-Con International, in San Diego, the nation’s largest comics convention, to celebrate the launch of the new manga series and raise awareness about this literacy campaign. Oden will appear in the VIZ Media booth on Sunday July 27 from 12:00-1:00pm to meet fans and sign autographs.

VIZ Media will also welcome two of the Los Angeles Laker Girls to San Diego Comic-Con for a special appearance in the booth in support of the release of SLAM DUNK, on Friday, July 25, from 12:00pm to 2:00 pm.

"I am very excited to team with VIZ Media to bring the basketball series SLAM DUNK to Oregon Mentors," said Oden. "I know the positive impact that mentoring has on young people. I believe in its ability to help kids develop a love for reading. I am excited to be a part of this special campaign!"

Basketball. The court, the ball, the hoop. The hopes, the dreams, the sweat. It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and Takehiko Inoue's manga series introduces readers to the Shohoku High team that wants to be just that – the best. They have one last year to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true – will they do it? Inoue's legendary basketball manga is finally here. Inoue’s SLAM DUNK is one of Japan’s most successful manga series, selling more than 100 million copies to-date. It has catapulted the artist into the top ranks of Japanese manga artists and debuts across North America August 11. Each volume of SLAM DUNK will feature a profile of a NBA player, their stats and their signature on-court move, beginning with Volume 1 which features the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and his signature move, the Slam Dunk as a bonus excerpt. Advance copies of SLAM DUNK will be available at the retail area of the VIZ Media booth at this years Comic-Con International.

"We are very excited to promote the use of the sport of basketball as a theme to help promote literacy and welcome Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden who shares the goal to increase literacy,” says Liza Coppola, Sr. Vice President, Corporate Relations & Partnerships, VIZ Media. “This is a perfect fit for both the NBA and SLAM DUNK. SLAM DUNK is a basketball manga series that captures the essence and excitement of basketball and appeal to anyone who loves the game, Greg Oden embodies the spirit of SLAM DUNK – he has the passion, drive and is looked upon as a role model for many potential readers of the series. He is a natural bridge between kids who love the game of basketball and the one book that brings the true feel and spirit of the game to life between its pages.”

Takehiko Inoue is the creator of two other titles lauded by critics and fans alike. VAGABOND, which is currently published in North America by VIZ Media (rated M for Mature), is a fictional account of the life of legendary 17th century swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. REAL, which debuts July 15 (rated T+ for Older Teens), is a riveting manga series about wheelchair basketball. Inoue has drawn international acclaim for his realistic and dramatic visual style and he’s the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Culture Award and the Media Arts Festival Award. A devoted fan of basketball, Inoue also did the character designs for the Playstation video game One On One and founded a scholarship to foster Japanese basketball talent.

BOOM! STUDIOS LAUNCHES FREE WEBCOMIC SITE

Site allows easy fan access to select BOOM! titles every day

A comic page a day keeps the boredom away

July 14th, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) -- BOOM! Studios today launches the BOOM! Studios Webcomic site at www.boom-studios.com, allowing readers to enjoy online access to select BOOM! titles for free! BOOM! Studios will be releasing a page a day from six different series beginning with the site's historic July 14th launch.

Starting off, readers will be able to read the critically acclaimed fan-favorites NINJA TALES, ZOMBIE TALES Volume 1, HERO SQUARED, 2 GUNS, SHMOBOTS, and CTHULHU TALES Volume 1! BOOM! will be continuing to do this all year round with many different series.

The first salvo of pages features a wide variety of incredibly talented creators, from a ZOMBIE TALE by KINGDOM COME writer Mark Waid with Marvel Comics artist Carlos Magno, to legendary FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE creators Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, as well as writer Steven Grant, known for his original run on THE PUNISHER. SHMOBOTS writer Adam Rifkin is no slouch either, having directed cult-faves such as DETROIT ROCK CITY and THE DARK BACKWARD. Rifkin is also well known for scripting the feature films MOUSEHUNT and UNDERDOG. These are just a few of the stellar talents on tap for BOOM!'s new initiative.

At launch, each series will have a handful of pages already posted so that fans can immediately sample the tone, characters, and storyline of each series. Thereafter, BOOM! will update each series with a page a day, averaging five pages of content per series, per week.

"This is a great way to get the word out about BOOM! titles," said Chip Mosher, Marketing and Sales Director for BOOM! Studios. "When people come to the site for free comics, they'll be able to take a look at the other quality books we're putting out. The interface ties all the parts of our website - the store, current titles, free stuff - into one beautiful package. New fans who might be stopping by for cool zombie or Cthulhu content can get turned on to what BOOM!'s doing across the board and check out the print editions in local comic book shops or at Amazon.com and mass market bookstores via our distribution deal with Perseus Books. We expect that people who aren't BOOM! fans will discover our series and titles and be excited to own print copies."

This is not BOOM!'s first foray into the digital distribution of their titles. Earlier this year, BOOM! and MySpace, the world's most popular online social network, announced a partnership to provide the MySpace Comic Books community with free editions of BOOM! Studios' highly anticipated new comic book series, NORTH WIND. Throughout the five-issue mini-series, MySpace users were able to view online or download all the issues of NORTH WIND for free exclusively on the MySpace Comic Books profile (http://myspace.com/comicbooks) the day each issue hit store shelves.

After pioneering the first simultaneous release of a comic book online and in stores with NORTH WIND, issue #1 sold out and went to second printing, and BOOM! Studios saw an unprecedented 30% increase in orders from issue #3 to issue #4.

"We're seeing a greater demand for digital comics, whether it be from casual readers or hardcore fans," said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid. "Partnering with MySpace showed us that releasing our books for free online actually helped our sales. After sampling BOOM! comics electronically, readers went out to buy physical copies. The BOOM! Webcomic site will continue spearheading this game-changing initiative."

"Working in the entertainment industry I see that, every day, the internet keeps changing things," said Ross Richie, Co-Founder of BOOM! Studios. "Companies are shaped around the internet, but for BOOM!, we're shaping the internet around us."

The BOOM! Studios Webcomic site goes live July14th at www.boom-studios.com.

RARE ORIGINAL OBAMA "HOPE" ARTWORK
DONATED BY SHEPARD FAIREY
TO ART FOR LIFE CHARITY AUCTION

[Los Angeles- July 14, 2008] Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist whose irreverent works have deconstructed the meaning and methods of propaganda, ironically became the creator of one of the most potent political images in recent history - the OBAMA "HOPE" poster. The image found such immediate resonance with Obama supporters that it became ubiquitous throughout the primary campaign and across the web.

Now, at the request of Russell Simmons, Shepard has donated one of three fine art versions of the poster to the charity auction, Art For Life, an annual event which benefits Simmons' Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

This piece is approximately 4 foot x 6 foot in size and is a mixed media stencil collage on cotton rag paper. This "HOPE" may be the only fine art piece of this image available to the public, and is one of only three in existence.

The Art For Life auction ends Tuesday, July 16 at noon. Then the online budding is closed and the highest bidders are invited to bid by phone during the live auction on July 19. Entering the online auction is the only way to enter the live auction. The online auction can be found here:

Jim Steranko Joins Radical’s Comic-Con Panel and Signing Schedule

July11th, 2008, LOS ANGELES – With the recent addition of Yoshitaka Amano to their signing schedule, Radical Publishing is now extremely proud to announce that award winning comic book writer-artist-historian, graphic artist, publisher and film production illustrator Jim Steranko will be at the San Diego Comic-Con 2008, exclusively for Radical Publishing. In addition to signing both Friday and Saturday, Jim Steranko will also be part of the Radical Publishing Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 25th from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. in Room 10.

“I don’t think it gets any bigger than having Jim Steranko along with Yoshitaka Amano on board for Comic-Con 2008” states Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher, Barry Levine. “I’m also excited over the fact that Steranko is part of our Comic-Con panel, and I greatly encourage everyone to attend. We are going to have some big announcements during Comic-Con week in addition to our FREE raffle and soon to be released signing schedule. “

In addition to providing covers for issue #1 and #2 of Hercules: The Thracian Wars, Steranko also designed the Hercules character and provided the title logo. Besides signing issue #1’s and #2’s, Radical is providing a special sketch cover of Hercules: The Thracian Wars #1 which is limited to 500 copies, a limited edition Hercules t-shirt, and a large poster size print of his cover for Hercules issue #1.

"I've been fortunate over the years to have worked for many publishers and been in a position to pick and choose," says Jim Steranko. "My prime criterion is quality, for which there is no substitute, and that's one of the key aspects that impressed me about Radical's production, and then, there's the material. When they revealed their plan to reinvision Hercules, the quintessential hero, I knew they had to generate a treatment that breathed new life into the character—and that treatment was delivered by Steve Moore. It's an extraordinary moment in comics history and I'm pleased to have played a small part in it."

Jim Steranko will be signing on Friday, July 25th and Saturday, July 26th at the Radical Publishing booth.
