Angry Birds Launches From IDW
Feathers Fly This Summer!

San Diego, CA (January 17, 2014) – Rovio Entertainment’s worldwide multimedia sensation Angry Birds™, is the newest property to join the IDW Publishing family! Beginning in June, the playfully fun adventures that took the world by storm will explode onto the page in the boundless world of comics.

The immense success of Angry Birds began in 2009 when the mobile game debuted. With 2 billion downloads through apps, the Angry Birds franchise has now been featured in nine different editions of the game, a number of successful toy lines, an animated series and is in development as a feature length film to be distributed by Sony Pictures. The innovative game solidified a market of casual gamers in the changing landscape of mobile devices.

“We're very happy to be in business with Rovio on Angry Birds comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW's Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Rovio has taken what was once a captivating game and built it into an interesting world filled with interesting and, uh, feathered characters who will make a perfect addition to our growing line of fun, all-ages comics.”

The world of Angry Birds has already expanded beyond its initial gameplay, with popular characters such as Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, Matilda, King Pig and many other colorful and delightful personalities inhabiting the Piggie Island and forming the basis for an unending series of adventures.

The partnership between IDW and Rovio provides a relationship greater than just a license as Rovio has applied their unique creative vision towards the comic adaptation of Angry Birds. Enlisting top talent from across the comics industry, such as Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts) and Eisner Award-winning writer Paul Tobin (Bandette), Angry Birds captures the fun and originality of the game itself.

“The Angry Birds comics are a perfect way of getting to know the characters, their personalities, and their world more closely. I hope that readers of all ages will have fun with these comics by top-notch creators,” said Jukka Heiskanen, Rovio’s Editor-In-Chief of Comics.

The upcoming comics from IDW will be one way to experience the sensational series in print! Look for more announcements in the coming months, and prepare to bash some green piggies this summer!

TALES OF HONOR:
COMIC LAUNCHES MULTI-PLATFORM STORYWORLD TO INTRODUCE NEW FANS TO THE "HONORVERSE"

Evergreen Studios to transform David Weber’s critically acclaimed science fiction book series into a visually rich experience

LOS ANGELES – January 17, 2014 – TALES OF HONOR #1 lands this March, kicking off the first of many immersive science-fiction comics, games, webisodes, and TV episodes, leading up to the release in 2017 of a feature film. Based on the USA Today and New York Times bestselling science-fiction novels, Honor Harrington, by David Weber, the stories are set 2,000 years in the future when hyperspace travel has allowed humanity to colonize the far reaches of the universe. TALES OF HONOR follows the life and times of a brilliant, genetically engineered female spaceship captain, Honor Harrington, as she heroically leads her crew through a series of epic political, military, and personal adventures.

“We chose the comic platform to launch the Honorverse to the uninitiated because it emphasizes visual storytelling and introduces our characters in a strong, iconic way.  Comics also offer us the opportunity to interact with audience on a monthly basis to find the right tone and style for this new incarnation of Honor Harrington and her world,” said Scott Kroopf, Chief Creative Officer, Evergreen Studios.

The first comic series introduces Honor on the eve of her execution. From her cell, she recalls her first command assignment in a hellish backwater star system, where she discovers an enemy fleet massing for a sneak attack and must find a way to stop them with her lone ship.

“Weber’s story world is so cool because it’s based in real science, which gives it a feeling of authenticity. TALES OF HONOR is to Science Fiction what JASON BOURNE is to spy movies: realistic, gritty, and action-packed,” said Scott Kroopf, Chief Creative Officer, Evergreen Studios.

Matt Hawkins from Top Cow agrees. “I have never taken on outside comic projects, but when Evergreen approached me and I read the books, I was truly intrigued. David Weber has a level of detail that is not given in a lot of stuff now. The way they do the spaceship combat is actually realistic. The idea that the ships are so far apart and have to deal with inertia is something you don’t see in Star Trek or Star Wars. You can’t just turn a ship on a dime that’s going that fast.”

“What impressed me about THINK TANK was how clever and scientifically grounded it was, which made it very accessible and believable. Matt studied science and grew up in a military family, which made him the perfect person to adapt this story as a comic,” said Scott Kroopf, Chief Creative Officer, Evergreen Studios.

Evergreen Studios, the company behind WALKING WITH DINOSAURS, currently in theatres, develops stories whose characters, plots, and ideas can unfold over multiple platforms.

The mobile game, Tales of Honor: The Secret Fleet, will be available on iOS and Android and releases shortly after the first comic. This free-to-play strategy game will allow people to battle a multitude of enemies in ship to ship combat across the breadth of the “Honorverse”.

David Weber wrote 28 Honor Harrington novels, including an anthology series, two spin-off series, and a recent young adult series. The most recent entry in the series, Beginnings, was released July 2013.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS IS A DEEP-FRIED CRIME SERIES YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS
Jason Aaron and Jason Latour’s new ongoing series is full of grit

Welcome to Craw County, Alabama: breeding ground for bastards and the setting of Jason Aaron (Scalped, Wolverine, The X-Men, Thor: God of Thunder) and Jason Latour’s (Django Unchained) new ongoing crime series SOUTHERN BASTARDS. Get to know Earl Tubb, a crusty old coot who believes the only way to survive a place like Craw County is to carry a really big stick.

Earl's a lonely old man with some serious daddy issues. Years ago, his father, Bertrand Tubb, was the tough as nails sheriff of Craw County, Alabama. “But Bert's been dead for years, and now something has changed in Craw County,” explained Aaron. “Something you have to squint hard to see, but it's there, something dark and bloody just beneath the surface, something none of the locals want to talk about or even acknowledge. Until Earl comes home and starts asking questions.”

Craw County might seem like a simple town on the surface, but within a few issues the mysteries about some of the residents will start to multiply. “We'll meet the new sheriff in due time, the guy who's manning the job that used to belong to Earl's dad,” said Aaron. “But the way he sees things is the same as most everybody else around the county: there ain't nothing wrong here, so go the hell back to the city and mind your own damn business. Basically as long as the Craw County High School Runnin' Rebs football team keeps winning games, nobody's overly concerned with any other sort of business Coach Euless Boss might
be up to. So long as the bleachers are full, the folks in Craw County don't rightly care who's buried underneath them.”

The South has a particular style and flavor, which Latour taps into for SOUTHERN BASTARDS. “It’s a cliché perhaps but the South is either in your veins or it’s not. There are people who move away and never lose it, people who’ve never been here but find themselves in touch with it over night,” said Latour. “It’s kind of an unshakable feeling, and my relationship with the South is a thing I’ve felt conflicted about my whole life. It's always kind of been in there like a devil clawing at me from the inside. This project was a chance to let it out.”

Better than a homecooked meal, SOUTHERN BASTARDS is sure to delight readers no matter on which side of the Mason-Dixon Line they reside.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1 arrives in stores on 4/30 and is available for $3.50.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code FEB140475.

SILK ROAD TO RUIN: Why Central Asia Is The Next Middle East 2nd Edition
By Ted Rall

cid:109ekznpn5msgg@www.nbmpub.com

FIRST TIME IN PAPERBACK, UPDATED WITH AN ALL NEW CHAPTER!

Part graphic novel travelog, part tongue-in-cheek travel guide, here are the adventures of caustic cartoonist Rall in the wild and wooly central Asian countries, a powder keg sitting on tomorrow?s oil?

Combines articles with comics chapters relating his experiences retracing the old legendary Silk Road starting with the sublime history of China and ending in the absurdity of the petty dictatorships of the ?The ?Stans? where Rall had the temerity -or was it blustery stupidity?- to go back, including once with a group of listeners to his radio show, on a dare.

It?s exotic adventure, satire and a fun way to find out more about a part of the world that looms in importance with its immense reserves of oil?
?A rollicking, subversive and satirical portrait of the region that is part travelogue, part graphic novel. It?s fresh and edgy and neatly captures the reality of travel in the region.?
- Lonely Planet Guide for Central Asia

?As a ticking package, the visual and verbal delivery is irreplaceable. This is wrenching stuff. I admire the hell out of the way Rall walks the walk.?

BOOM! STUDIOS RELEASES THIRD COLLECTION OF EISNER AWARD-WINNING SHANNON WHEELER CARTOONS

I Don't Get It HC
'I Don't Get It' Cover by Shannon Wheeler
January 16, 2014 - Los Angeles, CABOOM! Town, an imprint of award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios, is excited to announce the January 22nd release of I DON’T GET IT, a follow-up hardcover collection to Shannon Wheeler’s I TOLD YOU SO and Eisner Award-winning I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE FUNNIER books. As with the previous two volumes, I DON’T GET IT is a “best of” collection of cartoons Wheeler created for The New Yorker that were not accepted for publication. The New Yorker is a weekly magazine containing articles, short stories, and essays that focus on the cultural life of New York City.
“A new collection of cartoons from Shannon is always a highlight for me,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Shannon is one of a kind, a cartoonist with a singular voice and a gift for delivering sharp humor and biting observations. We're thrilled to continue this award-winning tradition of collecting Shannon's best cartoons that ended up on the cutting-room floor!”
Where do cartoons go when they’ve been bounced by The New Yorker? When they’re as funny as what’s floating in TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN creator Shannon Wheeler’s brain, they’re boiled down to the best of the bounced and presented in one laugh-out-loud volume. Featuring an introduction by Keith Knight (THE K CHRONICLES, THE KNIGHT LIFE), I DON’T GET IT is the latest collection of wheeler cartoons that will leave you wondering why they never made it to publication.

VIZ MEDIA’S PERFECT SQUARE IMPRINT RELEASES A BRAND NEW ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL ADVENTURE WITH BEN 10 OMNIVERSE: JOYRIDES

Teen Superhero Ben Tennyson And Partner Rook Must Save Their Reputations And Get To The Bottom Of A Dangerous Mystery When Sudden Amnesia Wipes Their Memories

San Francisco, CA, January 15, 2014 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga, graphic novels and anime in North America, has announced the release of a new BEN 10 OMNIVERSE original graphic novel, based on the popular Cartoon Network original series. Available now from the company’s Perfect Square imprint, BEN 10 OMNIVERSE: JOYRIDES is rated ‘A’ for All Ages and carries an MSRP of $7.99 U.S. / $9.99 CAN.

A digital version is also available for $4.99 U.S. / CAN from the Perfect Square App, which offers titles for the Apple iPad® and iPad® Mini. The Perfect Square App is available from the iTunes store. Fans can also find a digital version for the NOOK, Kindle Fire, and Kobo ereaders, as well as in the iBooks and GooglePlay Stores.

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE: JOYRIDES features a lead story by B. Clay Moore and artwork by Alan Brown, as well as a second story by Joel Enos with artwork by Albert Carreres. In B. Clay Moore’s “Tim 10,” Ben’s aliens seem to be causing all kinds of trouble in Undertown. But Ben doesn’t remember doing any of it... or changing into the aliens at all. Something’s not right, but what? Ben better find out before his reputation is ruined for good! And in Joel Enos’ “Down in the Dumps,” Ben finds out that being a superhero doesn’t always get you the respect you deserve when he tries to teach a class of plumber recruits at the academy... and ends up getting them all into a heap of trouble.

The BEN 10 OMNIVERSE graphic novels are inspired by the hit animated Ben 10 Omniverse series that airs on Cartoon Network and is one of the network’s biggest global franchises. Ben Tennyson has been saving the universe with his partner, Rook, and his trusty Omnitrix, which allows him to use the DNA of aliens to take on heroic new forms. But he’s never encountered challenges quite like these!

“The Perfect Square library of original graphic novels notably expands this month with the release of BEN 10 OMNIVERSE: JOYRIDES. Longtime comics storyteller B. Clay Moore has a great take on Ben and both stories should hold appeal for kids and grown ups, whether parents reading to their kids, or adult fans who like fun stories and seeing a bit of the real and flawed in their heroes,” says Joel Enos, Editor and Writer for the BEN 10 OMNIVERSE Graphic Novels. “Ben’s got to contend with being not only a hero, but in “Down in the Dumps,” he’s even got to try being a teacher to new recruits who know way more than he does about regulations. Anyone who knows Ben well knows he’s got a lot of courage and heroic qualities, but I had a lot fun playing with what he’d probably flub up if he had to be an authority figure.”

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE writer/editor Joel Enos has worked on a variety of VIZ Media manga titles including NARUTO, YU-GI-OH!, and POKÉMON, as well as editing original comic series, MONSUNO and MAX STEEL, for the Perfect Square imprint. Joel also wrote the graphic novel BEN 10 OMNIVERSE: PARALLEL PARADOX (Perfect Square), which will be released in April.

Writer B. Clay Moore has authored comic books for virtually every major publisher, including VIZ Media, Image Comics, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, WildStorm, Oni Press and Top Cow Productions. He is also the co-creator of a handful of critically acclaimed creator-owned titles.

BEN 10 OMNIVERSE artist Alan Brown has a love of comic art and cartoons that led him to a career as a storyboard and concept artist for a busy London agency, working for clients such as Lego and Ford. As a freelance artist and designer he has also created a variety of licensed artwork for Disney, Warner Bros. and the BBC, while continuing to provide comic art for a variety of small press and independent comics publishers.

Artist Albert Carreres has worked on several comic and manga titles, including the Cars movie prequel comic book and an Iron Man edition for Marvel. He was also the artist for Voltron Force: Dragon Dawn (Perfect Square) and created the cover art for MAX STEEL: HERO OVERLOAD for VIZ Media’s Perfect Square imprint.

VIZ Media’s Perfect Square imprint focuses on delivering original comics, manga (graphic novels) and other children’s books with an emphasis on strong storytelling, eye-popping graphics, empowering themes, and a dash of irreverence that captures the imagination of a whole new generation.
