Legendary Writer/Artist Geof Darrow’s "Shaolin Cowboy" Returns in 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MILWAUKIE, Ore., (Jan. 5, 2017)—Get a kung-fu grip on yourself as Geof Darrow’s blood-spattered killing machine the Shaolin Cowboy returns this April in a new four-issue mini-series to be published by Dark Horse Comics. The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign? will be written and illustrated by Darrow, who has won the Inkpot Award and won (and lost) multiple Eisner Awards, and colored by the Eisner Award-winning Dave Stewart. The first issue will have a main cover by Darrow and Stewart and a variant cover by the award-winning Frank Miller, Darrow’s co-contributor on Hard Boiled and Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. In The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign?, the titular hero of the series finds that his road to hell is paved not with good intentions but old nemeses hell bent on bloody revenge.
In addition to the chainsaw-fueled adventures of the Shaolin Cowboy, Darrow is renowned for his early work with Moebius, his designs for television (including Super Friends, Richie Rich, and Pac-Man) and films (including The Matrix and Speed Racer), his collaborations with Frank Miller and Andrew Vachss, and his iconic and detailed comic book covers.
“For a press release about a comic known for not having much dialogue, this press release sure has a lot of words in it,” said Darrow.
Before he was a Three-time Eisner Award winner, Geof Darrow was born in Cedar Rapids, IA. He is an ex-altar boy, garden mechanic and boom operator on a soft-core adult film. He resides in Chicago IL and his artwork inspires and disillusions fans and artists alike:
“Obsessively detailed, hysterically ultraviolent … Darrow has no truck with fripperies like plot, which would only get in the way of his exceptional draftsmanship and genius for staging Grand Guignol fight scenes.”—NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
"No one draws violence quite like Geof Darrow, and nothing he’s drawn is quite as violent as his latest graphic novel.”—NY MAG’s VULTURE
“Shaolin Cowboy has always been a little on the crazy side. Okay, a lot on the crazy side.”—IGN
Mind-blowing.”—PASTE MAGAZINE
“Completely ridiculous—and 100% amazing.”—io9
“A cold shower wake up call to those who forgot that there are pictures that go with all of the colorful rhetoric.”—AIN’T IT COOL NEWS
“Who says you can’t learn things from comic books? For example, in “Shaolin Cowboy” ... I’ve learned that monks aren’t too chatty.—BLOODY DISGUSTING
“To say that Geof Darrow is unique is a bit of an understatement. I think he’s just plain brilliant.”—Mike Mignola

BREAKOUT HIT ECLIPSE ARRIVES IN PAPERBACK
The first four issues collected into trade paperback this February

Fan-favorite creative team Zack Kaplan and Giovanni Timpano will release the first trade paperback collection of their ongoing gritty sci-fi/horror series ECLIPSE this February from Image Comics and Top Cow Productions.

In the near future, a mysterious solar event has transformed the sun’s light into deadly immolating rays. The world’s few survivors now live in nocturnal cities, unable to survive the daylight hours outdoors. But a killer has emerged who uses sunlight to burn his victims—and when he targets the daughter of a solar power mogul, it falls to a disillusioned solar engineer to protect her.

ECLIPSE VOLUME 1 (ISBN: 978-1-5343-0038-5) hits comic book stores Wednesday, February 15th and bookstores Tuesday, February 21st, and will be available for $9.99. It can be ordered by retailers with Diamond code DEC160754, and it is available for preorder via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indiebound, and Indigo.

Select praise for ECLIPSE:

“ECLIPSE has all the feel of a Raymond Chandler novel. David Baxter is a compelling lead character, hollowed out by the disaster that broke the world and reluctant to be an active participant, not just in the murder investigation but society as a whole.” —IGN

“A great book with a really original spin on traditional sci-fi.” —All-Comic (5/5 overall score)

“Kaplan’s story telling style is succinct and the art by Timpano has never been better.” —Word of the Nerd (10/10 overall score)

“This is a story that sees the world re-imagined but still manages to explore the human condition.” —GeekFeed (5/5 overall score)

“Extremely appealing to the eye.” —Bounding into Comics (10/10 overall score)

"Part mystery, part monster tale, and all science fiction, ECLIPSE keeps getting better as Kaplan unfolds this dystopian detective story. Timpano and Kaplan are one impressive voice." —Spartantown

KITSU RAISES $600,000 IN SEED FUNDING TO BRING ANIME TO THE MACHINE... AND MORE
Anime-focused recommendation and social platform gets backing from
VIZ Media and Bernard Chong to build out world-class content discovery capabilities

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 4, 2017 – Kitsu, a startup changing the way the community experiences anime, announced today that it has raised six hundred thousand dollars in a seed round between San Francisco, California-based entertainment company VIZ Media, LLC, and Manila, Philippines-based entrepreneur Bernard Chong. Kitsu will use these funds to build out its world-class content discovery platform at kitsu.io, led by Kitsu founder and CEO, Josh Fabian, who started the project under the Hummingbird name. Josh previously was Lead Designer, Groupon Stores, and Lead Designer, oBaz.

“What makes me most excited about where Kitsu is going is how easy it's going to be to connect with other anime and manga fans,” said Josh Fabian, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kitsu. “We’ve been very proactive and thoughtful about how exactly to approach the social component of anime, and we think what we have will continue to drive that conversation moving forward."

As part of the investment, Bernard Chong as well as Brad Woods, VIZ Media's Chief Marketing Officer, will join the Kitsu board. VIZ Media’s Rob Pereyda, Vice President of Business Development, led the deal at the company and will serve as Senior Advisor.

“We're thrilled to be working with Josh and the Kitsu team to bring this content to a wider audience,” said Brad Woods, Chief Marketing Officer at VIZ Media. "The features that are being rolled out with the new platform are really exciting, and we believe they will drive engagement for the anime industry as a whole."

“Discovery is one of the great challenges in the entertainment world today,” said Bernard Chong. “With Josh, I see an incredible entrepreneur with the product chops to help drive consumption, monetization and just plain joy in the business, and to me that is exciting.”

Built atop the modern web frameworks Ruby on Rails and Ember, the Kitsu platform (formerly Hummingbird) will remain open-source and be available to other entrepreneurs to use to drive their own discovery and social capabilities. The seed round investment from Bernard Chong and VIZ Media coincides with a ground-up rewrite and redesign of the Kitsu platform, now placing a greater emphasis on the social component of a user's experience.

While a key selling point of the platform for many users has been the functionality to track the anime and manga they've seen and are planning to see, "Version 3" of the platform heavily focuses on the social aspect, leveraging a robust machine learning engine to surface content users will be more likely to enjoy, including not just one-to-one, show-to-show recommendation pairings, but sophisticated taste-based content cohorts (interest clusters).

About Kitsu

Kitsu is a content discovery platform that helps anime and manga fans track, share and discover more of what they love. Through a world-class recommendation engine layered with social, machine learning and more, Kitsu is able to go beyond the traditional “what to watch next” and instead become a central part of peoples’ lives. With an open source platform and a thriving developer community, Kitsu is a one-of-a-kind player in the content discovery space not just for anime and manga, but the entertainment business in general. It actively shares its technology with the community and aims to enrich the lives of fans as well as help the business grow. More information is available at kitsu.io.

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (Jan, 2, 2017)—Dark Horse Books is proud to announce the Vents d’Ouest graphic novel adaptation of Herman Melville’s timeless classic Moby Dick, available in English for the first time on February 8, 2017.

A masterpiece of French literary comics, this hardcover edition collects both Vents d’Ouest volumes and features illustrations by the award-winning French author and artist Christophe Chabouté (Purgatoire, Tout Seul). “No comics adaptation I’ve seen has come close to doing what Christophe Chabouté does right here in this graphic novel…His storytelling, his pacing, matches Melville’s perfectly,” said Arcudi. “He does it with obvious love for Melville’s poetic writing, and he has the advantage of a great gift for drawing that allows him to give light to those potent words. He can almost hypnotize us with his gorgeous, grand, rhythmic art.”

IMAGE COMICS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2017
Image Comics is pleased to announce participation in Free Comic Book Day 2017 with these fun, vibrant, all-ages titles—KID SAVAGE by Joe Kelly and Ilya and I HATE IMAGE COMICS by Skottie Young. Free Comic Book Day will take place Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at participating comic book shops worldwide.

I HATE IMAGE COMICS will be the Gold Level free comic book from Image Comics and KID SAVAGE will be the Silver Level free comic book.

Readers can dive into the first chapter of another heartfelt adventure perfect for the whole family this Free Comic Book Day with KID SAVAGE. Enjoy this sweeping story of survival from Man of Action Entertainment (Big Hero 6, Ben 10) founder Joe Kelly—who first enchanted readers with the multiple-award winning, I KILL GIANTS—and illustrated by the lauded British cartoonist ILYA. Here readers meet the pioneering "First Family in Space" after they take a catastrophic wrong turn on their maiden voyage. When they crash on a dangerous alien planet their twenty-first century know-how is useless against the harsh environment and survival seems unlikely... Until they meet a strange ally: a mysterious orphan boy, short on temper but big on survival skills.

“Ilya and I have wanted to do this project for a long time and It's extremely exciting to finally unleash Kid Savage onto the world. Image has been supportive of the book from the instant I mentioned it to Eric, demonstrating their commitment to cool and original all-ages titles. Inspired by my unabashed love for the Hanna-Barbera cartoons of my youth like The Herculoids, I wanted to write an adventure comic that I would have grabbed onto as a younger reader. There's action, monsters, alien language, a wild boy protagonist and one of the coolest pets I've seen in a long time. There are also deep themes of loss, revenge, honor and family running through the book that should hook more seasoned readers as well.”

“This was a chance for Joe and I to build a whole new world, and then to fill it with every sort of weird and wonderful creature imaginable—plus, a few more that no-one could ever have expected! Just wait until you meet the Skinks, a double delight sure to be a future superstar. And Kid Savage himself is a riot. It’s time to get in touch with your most basic natures… Can u feel the Nu Primitive?”

KID SAVAGE is a wild ride through uncharted territory, and everyone is invited along for this unique journey.

After putting up with 25 years of creator-owned content, Gert is turning on her own publisher in Skottie Young's I HATE IMAGE COMICS, just in time to celebrate this milestone anniversary for Free Comic Book Day. Join Gert as she steps out of the world of I HATE FAIRYLAND and sharpens her battle-axe across some of the most beloved Image titles in history. Heads will roll and limbs will be severed as Gert faces off with a cast of characters so diverse they could only have come from the superstar talent that has made Image the number one publisher of creator-owned comics for two decades and running. Featuring characters from THE WALKING DEAD, SAGA, YOUNGBLOOD, CHEW, THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, and many, many more—nobody is safe.

Young said simply: “I got into comics when Image was founded. Now I’m drawing a character I created f’ing all those Images characters up, so yeah, I’m living the dream.”

IMAGE COMICS ISSUES REPRINT OF SAGA #41 DUE TO PRINTER ERROR

Due to a printer error, Image Comics will be reprinting SAGA #41 in time for it to hit shelves on the adjusted release date of January 4th, 2017.

“Bumping any title is a disappointment, but SAGA has shipped on time every issue up to this point and being forced to delay this one was an incredibly difficult decision,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “Unfortunately, while delaying the book for a week tarnishes our on-time shipping record, selling SAGA #41 as it was originally printed would have negatively impacted the quality of one of the best comics on the market. Not everything can be perfect, but in this case, the difference between the files submitted to the printer and the book that was printed were so great that we simply could not let the book go as is.”

Brian K. Vaughan, writer and co-creator, added: “Fiona and I are really sorry to have to ask readers, and our retailer partners, to wait just a little bit longer to read a finished issue that we’re particularly proud of. But we’re very grateful to our printer and everyone at Image for working quickly to fix an unfortunate printing error that we felt hurt the quality of our book. Thanks for understanding, and Happy Holidays!"

SAGA #41 (Diamond code: OCT160634) will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, January 4th.
