ONI PRESS EXPLORES THE MYTH AND MAYHEM OF NORTH WORLD THIS MARCH

This spring Oni Press is picking up the sword and shield and heading out for adventure with NORTH WORLD, BOOK 1: THE EPIC OF CONRAD, a new original graphic novel series from cartoonist and webcomicker Lars Brown! Part LORD OF THE RINGS and part GROSS POINTE BLANK, NORTH WORLD is a fantasy epic that has already enjoyed critical success as a webcomic (www.north-world.com) and now joins such Internet stalwarts as MEGATOKYO, PVP, PENNY ARCADE, and PERRY BIBLE FELLOWSHIP in moving to print with an already established audience in tow.

“NORTH WORLD is one of those books that just felt right for us,” said editor James Lucas Jones. “Lars' sensibilities, both in terms of artistic style and storytelling, fit in line wonderfully with our own and while he's tackling a genre that people don't immediately associate with Oni Press, he's exploring it in a way that is right up our alley.”

North World really isn't that different from our own... the biggest difference is the presence of mythical monsters, talking bears, arcane arts, and, of course, the heroes who stand ready to defend the innocent and helpless from these extraordinary threats! Conrad is one such hero and he's about to experience something scarier than any of the mighty beasts he's faced down — his ex-girlfriend's wedding!

NORTH WORLD adds to the impressive catalog of OniGNs—original graphic novels from veteran comic publisher Oni Press that explore a variety of themes and genres. It joins books from critically acclaimed creators like Bryan Lee O’Malley, Vasilis Lolos, Ande Parks , and Rick Spears & Chuck BB.

“With an already-established fan-base from his NORTH WORLD webcomic and a unique take on the 'swords & sorcery' genre,” added Jones, “We're confident that NORTH WORLD will appeal to both mainstream comic fans as well as the more casual sequential art readers looking for something both fun and different.”

NORTH WORLD, BOOK 1: THE EPIC OF CONRAD is a 152 page black-and-white graphic novel for $11.95. The digest-sized volume that's rated “T for Teen”. It ships to comic book stores this March.
I’m very pleased to announce that graphic novel publisher Ait/Planet Lar will be releasing a collected edition of my HOLMES series in March of this year. I’ve retouched dozens of pages and redrawn pieces I wasn’t satisfied with making this the definitive HOLMES edition.

Appearance meets reality as the duo must cope with their handicaps while recovering composer Joseph Haydn's missing skull. SC, 6x9, 104pgs, B&W $12.95 Diamond Code: JAN083322

PRESS RELEASE - REIGN OF THE SUPER DEAD!
WALKING DEAD #50's superhero cover now available as 1-in-25!

24 January, 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - In celebration of THE WALKING DEAD #50, Image Comics announced a limited 1-in-100 superhero variant cover
featuring the art of SAVAGE DRAGON's Erik Larsen and INVINCIBLE's Ryan Ottley, but due to the unprecedented level of demand and retailer
suggestions the cover will now be 1-in-25.

"My original intention was to make this a super-rare, limited thing, since the cover itself is so misleading as to what the book actually is. I didn't want people to be confused and think
I'd changed the book drastically. Although, based off feedback I've decided to make it much more accessible," said Walking Dead writer Robert Kirkman. "I hope those readers and retailers
excited for the cover enjoy it as much as I do."

Since 2003, WALKING DEAD has chronicled the post-apocalyptic journey of Rick Grimes, his family and the other survivors they meet along the
way. Series artist Charlie Adlard has given the title a very distinct, bold sense of horror and adventure, but with this superhero cover
Kirkman went with a very different approach by having Image Comics Publisher and SAVAGE DRAGON creator, Erik Larsen, team up with
INVINCIBLE's Ryan Ottley to create a WALKING DEAD homage like none other.

Erik Larsen said, "When Robert told me the original idea, I thought it was crazy - which meant I had to be on board! The combination of my
pencils with Ryan's inks created an art style far different from what either of us do solo. I'm really hoping we can work together again!"

WALKING DEAD #50 (FEB082109), a black & white comic book for $2.99, will be available on April 23rd, 2008. The Erik Larsen & Ryan Ottley
superhero variant will be available as one for every twenty five copies ordered.

23 January, 2008 - Despite significant overprints, two of Image's best-selling titles, FRANK FRAZETTA'S DEATH DEALER #5 and THE SWORD #4, simultaneously sold out at a distribution level.

"Everyone on the DEATH DEALER team couldn't be more excited as this marks our fifth sell out," said Frazetta Comics editor Jay Fotos said. "We're very thankful for Frank's loyal, rabid fan base. Based off the reaction to DEATH DEALER, I'm confident they'll enjoy the upcoming Frazetta comics such as DARK KINGDOM and SWAMP DEMON."

FRANK FRAZETTA'S DEATH DEALER #5 marks the penultimate issue to the only Frank Frazetta approved DEATH DEALER series to hit the stands. "We’re seeing a rise in The Sword’s sales, so we’re happy that more people are getting into and enjoying this series," said SWORD artist Jonathan Luna. "As always, we appreciate the support of the fans and retailers."

SWORD writer Joshua Luna added, "This is a story that Jon and I are having an absolute blast creating. We’re putting everything we love to write and draw about into The Sword: drama, action, supernatural elements and mystery. Plus, as always, we strive to make it accessible to all readers--well, at least, to the ones who can handle limbs getting chopped off."

FRANK FRAZETTA'S DEATH DEALER #5 2nd Ptg. (NOV078143), a 32-page full color comic book with a gold foil cover for $3.99, is available now. THE SWORD #4 2nd Ptg. (NOV078122), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be available in stores January 23rd, 2008.

The Straw Men arise this summer!
23 January 2008

Matt Maxwell, longtime comics commentator (Broken Frontier, Highway 62, and The Comics Waiting Room) officially launches the online preview of his upcoming original graphic novel STRANGEWAYS: MURDER MOON (JAN083670 F STRANGEWAYS MURDER MOON GN). Not content to sit on the sidelines, Maxwell has tossed his creative hat into the ring with this 144-page black and white tale of western horror; cowboys and werewolves if you like. Originally slated to be published by Speakeasy Comics, STRANGEWAYS and the publishing company parted ways, and Maxwell abandoned the idea of publication in a monthly format in favor of an OGN presentation.

"I really wanted to make sure that the audience had a chance to get the whole story," Maxwell says. "Smaller publishers were spending a lot of money trying to keep a string of monthly-style comics going. And the reality of Diamond's minimums made publishing in an OGN format a lot more attractive. I didn't want to be presented with the very real possibility of having the story cut off midstream, which is why the first issue was never published by Speakeasy. The whole point of this is storytelling, and if you're only getting through the first two acts, your audience is going to be disappointed."

Featuring writing by Maxwell and stark artwork by Argentine artist Luis Guaragña, STRANGEWAYS: MURDER MOON is the story of former army officer Seth Collins adrift in a haunted, post-Civil War frontier west. Answering an urgent letter from his estranged sister in the town of Silver Branch, Collins finds himself under attack by a strange creature that is neither man nor wolf. When his friend and partner Webster is accused of being the beast, Collins must track down the real threat. But which will kill him first: the Wolf, or the secret that the sheriff of Silver Branch is trying to keep buried?

The cover for STRANGEWAYS: MURDER MOON was drawn by Steve Lieber (CIVIL WAR, WHITEOUT). Gallery pieces by Guy Davis (BPRD, SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE), Fábio Moon (CASANOVA, SMOKE AND GUNS), and Gabriel Bá (CASANOVA, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY) were specially commissioned for the book. "I've been very lucky with STRANGEWAYS," Maxwell said "in that it gave me an opportunity to work with these very talented artists, in some cases before they were really known in the U.S. And really, if you're going to have a monster designed, you go to Guy Davis. As for Steve Lieber's work, he's really an unsung hero in terms of comic storytelling. That cover was everything I could ask for, both evocative and arresting."

The first chapter of STRANGEWAYS: MURDER MOON is currently available as a PDF file by way of the following link:

http://www.highway-62.com/Strangeways/2008/01/strangeways_murder_moon_previe.html

"My intention was to give people an idea of what they're getting into, both retailers and readers. Simple as that."

STRANGEWAYS: MURDER MOON will be supported by promotion in both the horror and comics fields, in print and on the internet. Matt Maxwell, creator and writer of the STRANGEWAYS series, is available for interviews from interested parties. He can be contacted at maxwellm@pobox.com or via the Highway 62 website at highway-62.com.

"Is Maxwell bringing back the Western AND Suspense-Horror at the same time? Then I'm on board, riding shotgun. Strangeways, here I come!" -- Jeff Parker (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and THE INTERMAN)

"MURDER MOON is a thoughtful, intelligent story of brooding werewolves and tough-as-nails cowboys that never lets up the pace, full of action, pathos, and downright fun." -- David Wellington (MONSTER PLANET and 13 BULLETS)

“I’m not sure why ‘cinematic’ is the first word to come to mind as I think about STRANGEWAYS. Maybe it’s the easy flow of the story, which takes its time in introducing and developing characters and setting up the werewolf-Western scenario so naturally and believably.” -- Michael May (Comics World News)

“STRANGEWAYS is definitely not camp; it’s also more horror than western, at least in this debut issue. Writer Matt Maxwell is plainly working to set up a thorough backstory, one deeply rooted in that connecting tissue mentioned above, and keenly aware of the interactive possibilities between various genre mechanics.” -- Joe Mac (Joglikescomics.blogspot.com)

Worthwhile Books To Release First Title, Michael Recycle

Book launch part of first-look deal with renowned UK children's publisher Meadowside Books

(San Diego, CA, January 22, 2008)-Just in time for Earth Day on April 22, a new environmental super-hero will be hitting bookstores in March 2008. The uplifting, zany children's picture book, Michael Recycle, comes from Worthwhile Publishing, a division of IDW Publishing, an established leader in comic book and graphic novel publishing.

Michael Recycle is set in a grimy town that has been overtaken by trash-that is, until a green-caped crusader, Michael Recycle, arrives, declaring "You must stop this now! You've got to act soon. The towers of trash reach up to the moon!" Inspired by the "super-green hero," town members react by creating a "Be Greener Campaign," which includes recycling, growing their own vegetables and collecting rain for reuse. In the end, the crusader proves to the town's lazy layabouts that recycling can be quite fun. The rhyming, whimsical prose with a powerful and timely message is written by Ellie Bethel, with bold, playful illustrations by Alexandra Colombo.

Michael Recycle marks the launch of IDW Publishing's new imprint, Worthwhile Books. The release is also part of Worthwhile Books' first-look arrangement with renowned UK children's publisher Meadowside Books (meadowsidebooks.com), which is releasing the fanciful children's picture book in the UK in January 2008.

Worthwhile Books will issue approximately 10 Meadowside titles over the course of the first year including The Nicest Naughty Fairy by Nick Ward, a story about what happens when the Naughty Fairy decides its time to be nice, and William's Dinosaurs by Alan Baker, which tells the tale of a little boy who finds more than trees in the dark woods near his home.

Los Angeles - January 22nd, 2008 - Heed the call! Steve Niles inaugurates a new era of terror with the launch of BOOM! Studios' new monthly anthology, CTHULHU TALES. Edited by Mark Waid, CTHULHU TALES builds on the three best-selling CTHULHU TALES one-shots that BOOM! Studios has published since its inception.

"Making CTHULHU TALES into a monthly anthology featuring my favorite comics writers and artists was a no-brainer decision. Getting Steve Niles--one of comics' best-known modern horror writers--to kick off the first issue likewise only made sense," said Mark Waid, BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief. "And Steve delivered big."

Steve Niles headlines the first issue, joined with writer Michael Alan Nelson, who is best-known for his work on FALL OF CTHULHU, and Tom Peyer (DC'S FLASH, SPIDER-MAN: HOUSE OF M). Variant covers will ship for each issue, with the first issue sporting covers by Patrick Ballesteros and Mateus Santolouco with the second issue featuring covers by Marco Rudy and Santolouco. Each month, CTHULHU TALES and its rotating roster of writers will bring cutting-edge tales of the Old One with interior art by modern masters of the macabre.

This new CTHULHU TALES ongoing series marks BOOM! Studios' second monthly title, fitting perfectly alongside its best-selling monthly, FALL OF CTHULHU. BOOM! Studios' horror titles have helped define the company. From its best-selling trio of CTHULHU TALES one-shots which includes CTHULHU TALES, CTHULHU TALES: RISING, CTHULHU TALES: TAINTED to BOOM!'s smash hit ZOMBIE TALES one-shots, BOOM! Studios has been the "go-to" publisher for quality horror.

"We are really excited about doing a new monthly title, and there is no better choice than to make CTHULHU TALES our next big monthly hit. Horror fans in the know have long realized that FALL OF CTHULHU is one of BOOM!'s best and, with the addition of CTHULHU TALES, our horror line just gets that much stronger," said Chip Mosher, Marketing and Sales Director for BOOM! Studios.

CTHULHU TALES #1 is featured in this month's January 2008 Diamond Previews catalogue and will ship in March of this year. CTHULHU TALES #1 Cover A has a Diamond Code of JAN083452 and Cover B has a Diamond Code of JAN083453.
