AFTER MUCH SPECULATION, DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF TUROK®, DOCTOR SOLAR, MAGNUS,

AND MIGHTY SAMSON

DARK HORSE TEAMS WITH COMICS LEGEND, JIM SHOOTER, TO EXPAND GOLD KEY COMICS’ SUPERHEROES

AUGUST 5TH, MIlWAUKIE, OR–In a packed panel on Saturday morning during Comic Con, Dark Horse president, Mike Richardson called a surprise guest to announce Dark Horse’s plans to develop new comics and graphic novels for the Gold Key Comics’ superheroes. Fans were shocked to see Jim Shooter enter the room; the man recently named the “Steve Jobs of Comics” by Comic Book Bin. http://tinyurl.com/ku9o3w

Shooter is perhaps best known for his nine year tenure at Marvel Comics, beginning in 1982, with highlights including Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s run on the Uncanny X-Men, and Frank Miller's run on Daredevil. Also under Shooter's editorial reign, Walt Simonsen revamped The Mighty Thor and made it again a bestseller. Following his successful run at Marvel, Shooter launched the well-received Valiant comics imprint in the early 90s, bringing many of Marvel’s creators with him.

Now, Jim Shooter comes to Dark Horse as head writer for the re-launch of the Gold Key Comics characters: Turok, Son of Stone®, Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, Magnus, Robot Fighter, and Mighty Samson, with further characters and new comic writers to be announced shortly.

“It's great to be at Dark Horse, working with Mike Richardson, world-class creator, honorable gentleman and industry powerhouse” said Jim Shooter. “It's great to be reunited with Magnus, Solar, Turok, Samson and the other wonderful Gold Key properties. The opportunity is tremendous and the time is ripe. Let's do it.”

“Jim and I share a great affection for these terrific characters. We have some very exciting ideas on how to introduce them to a whole new generation of fans.” said Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse Comics.

Turok®

An original comic book hero, Turok is best known today for a successful video game franchise boasting more than five million units sold since the first game was introduced in the 1990s. The legend of the brave and ruthless dinosaur-hunter has lived on for more than thirty years in comic book series from Dell Comics, Gold Key Comics and Valiant. Anthologies of the original classic comics are now available from Dark Horse Comics.

Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom

Doctor Solar must find a way to become normal again after surviving an explosion that leaves him with the power to control atomic energy. When danger and disaster threaten the innocent, Solar leaps into action as the “Man of the Atom.” One of Gold Key Comics’ most popular titles in the 1960s, the original nuclear-powered superhero reached legendary status by the 1990s in new comics from Valiant. The original classic comics now appear in hardcover anthologies published by Dark Horse Comics.

Magnus, Robot Fighter

Haling from the year 4,000 A.D. is the stalwart hero of humanity, Magnus, Robot Fighter. These gripping adventure stories, in which a human who battles evil robots in the sprawling futuristic city of North Am, elevated the comic book medium when they debuted in the 1960s from Gold Key Comics, and captured the imagination of millions in new comics published thirty years later by Valiant. The original science-fiction classics now appear in hardcover anthologies published by Dark Horse Comics.

Mighty Samson

A popular Gold Key Comics character from the 1960s and 70s, the post-apocalyptic adventures of Mighty Samson are set in the land of N’Yark, an earth devastated by nuclear war. Amazingly large and strong, Samson uses his mutant strength only for good—and to protect his friends, Sharmain and Mindor, responsible for saving his life.

Turok, Son of Stone; Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom; Magnus, Robot Fighter and Mighty Samson are part of the Classic Media portfolio of properties. For more information, please go to: www.classicmedia.tv.

TRON LEGACY’s JOSEPH KOSINSKI SET TO DIRECT OBLIVION

August 4th, 2009, Los Angeles – The Coming out of San Diego Comic-Con International, Radical Publishing is proud to announce that Joseph Kosinski, director of the upcoming Tron Legacy, is slated to direct Oblivion as a full-length feature film, based on the upcoming hardcover book also created by the director. Oblivion will be produced by Kosinski alongside Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher Barry Levine, filmmaker David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Anonymous Content’s David Morrison. Radical Publishing’s Executive Vice President Jesse Berger is attached as executive producer.

Set in the distant future, Oblivion revolves around a court-martialed soldier who is exiled to a desolate planet ravaged by the wrath of time. During his efforts to explore his surroundings and bring an end to the last remains of a primitive alien race, he comes across a mysterious traveler. Through the help of this enigmatic traveler, the soldier begins to question everything he knows – both about the galaxy at large and himself.

"I was looking to make a science fiction film that I could do on a budget," stated Kosinski of the initial concept. "It's grown since then, but it's intended to be a very spare science fiction film, with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes."

“We’re very excited to have Joe Kosinski’s Oblivion at Radical,” said Barry Levine. “This our very first non comic property and the first book to debut in our illustrated novels collection. Not only has Joe crafted a unique vision for this book, he’s managed to create an incredible world and a compelling story. We’re pleased and proud to be a part of this project and fans will be overwhelmed with what we are planning for this book’s release.”

Oblivion will debut as a Hardcover hybrid novel in a landscape format, mixing the traditional text based novel with highly rendered illustrations. The book is set for a San Diego Comic-Con 2010 release under the Radical Books imprint.

PRESS RELEASE – WALKING DEAD FLIPS IMAGE’S POPULAR CRIME SERIES FOR THE 9TH CENTURY, VIKING!
Popular Image Series, THE WALKING DEAD, to feature to complete first issue of Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein’s latest debut, VIKING!

6 August 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – Following up on the recent WALKING DEAD/CHEW flipbook, next week’s WALKING DEAD #64 will feature the entire first issue of the pre-release sell out VIKING #1, by writer Ivan Brandon and artist Nic Klein, in a special black & white edition at absolutely no additional cost!

“The response to VIKING has been absolutely flooring in every way. But the chance to expose the book to the entire massive WALKING DEAD fan base is a whole new level of exciting,” said Brandon. “Even though VIKING is normally in our full color oversized format, we were surprised by how incredible Nic’s art looked in black and white. I think people are really going to love what they see.”

VIKING, heralded as a crime comic for the 9th century, follows the story of two brothers looking to make their way up the ladder of the Norse criminal underground only to find they're quickly biting off more than they could ever hope to chew. Nic Klein's lush rendering of Ivan Brandon's hard-boiled story will be right up the alley of any WALKING DEAD fan.

Kirkman added, “I’m personally psyched to have VIKING in the back of WALKING DEAD. As both an Image Partner and a fan, I’m thrilled by the book’s success and hope to continue its growth in any way I can.”

WALKING DEAD #64 (FEB092371), a 48-page B&W comic book featuring the entirety of VIKING #1 for only $2.99, will go on sale next week, August 12th, 2009. VIKING #3 (JUN090394), a full color 32-page oversized comic book for $2.99, will be in stores August 8th, 2009.

Hey folks,
It's been an amazing couple of weeks over here at Hoarse and Buggy Central. First, was the near instantaneous sell out of the Tumor Ashcan at San Diego Comic-Con. Thank you all so much for coming out and supporting the book!

Secondly, through a strange twist of fate, a tv show I worked on briefly last year was nominated for an Emmy Award, and, yours truly was one of the credited writers, meaning I can now introduce myself as Emmy Award Nominee Joshua Hale Fialkov. I expect each of you to do the same.

Third, Tumor - Chapter One was a huge hit on Amazon! It made it all the way up to #6 out of all graphic novels on Amazon. Not just digital, ALL graphic novels. I think we were even beating DC's super huge Final Crisis for a while.

Which brings me to the last quick news, which is that you can now purchase Chapter Two of Tumor on Amazon for a measly dollar. It's available right now for your Kindle, iPhone, or iPod Touch. Every purchase is showing Amazon that we're a market that matters and that they need to actively serve with their devices, so, please, if not for me, then for the future of comics, go check out the book. You can do so here:

Again, thank you all for your continued support, and as always, keep checking www.thefialkov.com and www.tumorthecomic.com for more info about what I'm up to.

Thanks!

TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED IN u.s. premiere SEASON OF ROBIN HOOD

- Robin Hood seeks truth, justice and revenge - in the return of the hit show –

BBC AMERCA’s hit revival of Robin Hood returns for a bigger, bolder third season of action-adventure. Toby Stephens (Die Another Day, Jane Eyre) and David Harewood (The Vice, The Palace) join the cast of Jonas Armstrong (Teachers, The Ghost Squad), Richard Armitage (MI-5, North & South), and Keith Allen (Bodies, The Others) as Robin continues to outwit the dastardly Sheriff and his forces—but Robin’s not the same crusader he once was. Since the death of Marian, Robin’s in a downward spiral fuelled by anger and grief - he can think of nothing but revenge. Meanwhile, a wave of corruption and evil has been sweeping the land. Luckily, a mysterious new ally in the form of a traveling monk, Tuck (Harewood) arrives just in time to get the hooded hero back on track. This season holds incredible twists and turns—take nothing for granted!

Robin Hood, season three, premieres Saturday, September 12, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Season three kicks off when Robin and his gang of outlaws return from the Holy Land. But now that he’s back, Robin wastes no time - Marian's murderer, Guy of Gisborne (Armitage), is a marked man. Robin immediately breaks with his followers, and races to Locksley Manor to avenge her death. Once there, he confronts Gisborne but does Gisborne care if he lives or dies? After all, Marian was the only woman he loved and his only hope.

Armstrong talks about the darker, tougher Robin Hood, hell bent on avenging his wife's tragic end, “Robin’s back from the Holy Land but without Marian, the beat of his life. He’s questioning everything he ever lived for. Now it’s pay back time, and he’s become obsessed with killing Gisborne. It’s great to bring Robin back a darker, more mature hero and fans will see that once he’s come to terms with his personal loss, he’s a stronger more powerful force than ever before.”

Meanwhile, the wickedness of the Sheriff (Allen) continues unabated - he’s sold the local men to fight a foreign war. When a feisty Locksley girl, Kate (Joanne Froggatt, Life On Mars), objects to her brother’s forced conscription, she inadvertently gets caught up in the cause of Robin Hood and becomes an indispensable member of the gang.

The third season also brings an unexpected addition when Gisborne's little sister, Isabella (Lara Pulver), unexpectedly arrives to further complicate the lives of both Robin and Gisborne. And, as the threat of Prince John (Stephens) looms larger, Robin and Gisborne reach an uneasy truce. They soon realize they may have more in common than they thought.

WHAT THE BRITISH PRESS SAID

“With a thunk of arrows and a clash of steel Robin Hood returns …this is stirring…stuff, with topical ‘homeland security’ and geeky Get Carter references to keep the grown-ups amused.” Financial Times

“…dark and gripping opening episode … Exactly how Robin Hood should be, this is fab stuff. Five stars.” TV Times

“…swashbuckling adventure drama … We find a darker, tougher Robin … Friar Tuck finally arrives in Sherwood Forest. But he’s not the roly-poly, comic figure of the traditional Robin Hood legend. This Tuck is a lean, mean, fighting machine, who calls himself Brother Tuck!” Sun

“As ever, this looks great, and several cast additions bring new life to the third series.” Daily Mail

“Hurray! Mead all round! The fantastic music alone is enough to make you want to dash through a forest in a leather jerkin, doing brave deeds and saving peasants from baddies.” Radio Times

“David Harewood beefs up the forest as Friar Tuck…” Guardian

“…the Sheriff of Nottingham, still exquisitely played by Keith Allen…” Sunday Express

FANTAGRAPHICS TO PUBLISH ERNIE BUSHMILLER’S NANCY

As announced at last week’s Comic-Con International, Fantagraphics Books — the leading publisher of classic strip reprints including The Complete Peanuts, Popeye, Krazy & Ignatz, Prince Valiant, Captain Easy, Dennis the Menace, Zippy the Pinhead and others — has acquired the rights from United Media to publish Nancy by Ernie Bushmiller, beginning in Spring 2010.

According to Co-Publisher Gary Groth, who inked the deal, Fantagraphics has contracted to publish the first 24 years of Nancy dailies, beginning in 1938 (when Nancy took over the strip from its former star, Fritzi Ritz) through 1961. "If the demand is there," Groth noted, "we will of course want to continue into the 1960s and beyond, if for no other reason than to run all those great 'hippie' Nancy episodes. But we'll cross that bridge in 2016 when we finish publishing the books we've contracted for."

"I was a late Nancy convert," admits Co-Publisher Kim Thompson, who will be editing the series. "It wasn't until Denis Kitchen published his Nancy collections in 1989 and 1990, after people like Bill Griffith and Scott McCloud had been touting it for years, that I finally 'got' it. It's one of the all-time greats -- way ahead of its time in its own goofy way. Ever since then it's been at the back of my mind to do a more extensive reprinting, and our ongoing successes with classic reprint series these past five years told me the time is now ripe."

Each volume of dailies will contain four years per volume and be designed by Fantagraphics Art Director Jacob Covey. Cartoonist Daniel Clowes (Ghost World) will provide the introduction to the first volume. Each volume will be 8” x 8” in flexibound format and retail for $29.99. Information regarding collections of Nancy Sunday strips will be announced at a later date.

“I envision Nancy being influenced by pop art and constructivist design in a way that will complement the geometric style of the strip and also give a nod to Mark Newgarden’s deconstruction of Nancy's forms,” says Covey, whose designs on books like Popeye, Willie & Joe and Beasts! have garnered numerous awards. “In a word: ‘POP’. Like Popeye, I want it to seem fun so kids can connect with it but smart so adults can look at it more deeply. But where Popeye has a Victorian nod, this will be modernist.”

Fantagraphics will begin with the "second" volume, 1942-1945. According to Thompson, "While we have access to great, nearly complete runs for most of the 1940s dailies, it looks like it will be far more trouble to collect the 1938 and 1939 material. So we'll be putting out a call to Nancy fans, both over the internet and in the first book itself, until we eventually secure the missing strips to double back and release the best possible 1938-1941 volume."

The character of Nancy, a precocious eight-year-old girl, first appeared in the strip Fritzi Ritz. After Larry Whittington began Fritzi Ritz in 1922, it was taken over by Bushmiller three years later. In 1933, Bushmiller introduced Fritzi's niece, Nancy. Soon she dominated the strip, retitled Nancy in 1938. At its peak in the 1970s, Nancy ran in more than 880 newspapers.

In addition to being one of the great comic strips of the 20th Century, Nancy is a bonafide pop culture icon, having captured the imagination of such artists as Andy Warhol, Joe Brainard, Scott McCloud, Bill Griffith, Mark Newgarden, and many others.

In Spring 2010, Fantagraphics will also publish an revised and expanded book edition of cartoonists Mark Newgarden and Paul Karasik’s seminal 1988 essay, “How to Read Nancy.” In addition to explicating the brilliance of Bushmiller’s cartooning, it also has become a landmark educational essay about visual storytelling through the analysis of Bushmiller’s work.

To quote from How to Read Nancy: “To say that Nancy is a simple gag strip about a simple-minded snot-nosed kid is to miss the point completely. Nancy only appears to be simple at a casual glance. Like architect Mies Van Der Rohe, the simplicity is a carefully designed function of a complex amalgam of formal rules laid out by the designer. To look at Bushmiller as an architect is entirely appropriate, for Nancy is, in a sense, a blue print for a comic strip. Walls, floors, rocks, trees, Ice-cream cones, motion lines, midgets and principals are carefully positioned with no need for further embellishment. And they are laid out with one purpose in mind - to get the gag across. Minimalist? Formalist? Structuralist? Cartoonist!”
