Manga artist Takeshi Obata was born in 1969 in Niigata, Japan, and is the artist of the wildly popular SHONEN JUMP title HIKARU NO GO (available from VIZ Media), which won the 2003 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize: Shinsei "New Hope" award and the 2000 Shogakukan Manga award. April 23, 2015 (Los Angeles, Calif.) - KaBOOM!, the all-ages imprint of award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios, is taking potty humor to the next level with the May debut of the oversized Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John #1. This special one-shot is packed with short stories focused on the Bravest Warriors’ lavish lavatory, the Holo John—a cross between Star Trek’s Holodeck and the wacky irreverence of Bravest Warriors that lets users live out their wildest (or lamest) fantasies—and features a cavalcade of talented creators, including Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Ryan Ferrier (Curb Stomp, D4VE), Kat Leyh (Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift), Mad Rupert (Adventure Time: Banana Guard), Eryk Donovan (Memetic), Adam Del Re, Jorge Corona (Feathers), and John Omohundro, the voice of Danny on the Bravest Warriors animated series!

“I think, deep down, we all wish we had a Holo John,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “But until that technology exists, we’ve enlisted some fantastic talent to showcase the many hilarious adventures that can be had with a holographic toilet. It’s especially exciting to have John Omohundro stepping out of the recording booth to make his comics debut!”

What happens when you flush a pet fish down the Holo John? (Hint: It fantasizes it was a shark instead!) Or what if the Holo John gains sentience and “dreams of electric pee”? All that and more are covered in this collection of short stories about the Bravest Warriors’ out-of-this-world outhouse. Who knew they used their emotions-based powers in the loo, too?

Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John #1 arrives in comic shops on May 27th with a main cover by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer (Critical Hit) for the price of $4.99 under Diamond order code MAR151109. Also available in a limited quantity is a retailer incentive cover by Artyom Trakhanov (Regular Show).

LEMIRE & ORMSTON’S ‘BLACK HAMMER’ DELAYED

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Due to an unforeseen health issue, Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s anticipated creator-owned series Black Hammer has been delayed until a future date.
Black Hammer has been a labor of love for me. It’s a project that I’ve been working on in various forms for seven years,” series cocreator Jeff Lemire said. “And as excited as I am to share it, sometimes life gets in the way of comics.
“On March 26, my amazing collaborator Dean Ormston suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on the left side of his brain, which affected his whole right side,” he continued. “Dean is now at home and recovering. As a result, we have decided to postpone the launch of Black Hammer until Dean is able to work regularly again. I’d like to thank all the fans and retailers for their patience and understanding as Dean recovers and promise that Black Hammer will be worth the wait.”
“In essence, this is a dream project, and to top it all off, I get to have my art enhanced by colorist supremo Dave Stewart,” Ormston told Comic Book Resources. “Sadly, about a month ago, I had a bleed on the brain, so things have been put on hold until I recover and get back to drawing fully. I am tentatively getting back to drawing Black Hammer, albeit slowly, but the outlook is positive and I’m confident of a full recovery.”
Retailers will be notified of a new date for Black Hammer in a future communication.
“Dean’s made Black Hammer’s visuals his own, and none of us can imagine launching the book before he’s able to draw it uninterrupted,” said series editor Brendan Wright. “We’ll reschedule the launch as soon as we can, and Jeff and Dean’s work on the full issue is going to blow everyone away!”
The entire Dark Horse staff wishes Dean Ormston a smooth and speedy recovery and encourages fans and retailers to keep their eyes peeled for further updates as to when Black Hammer will debut.
To get a better idea of what’s coming in Black Hammer #1, check out an exclusive preview and further comments from the team over at Comic Book Resources.

NBM PUBLISHING NOMINATED FOR
3 FIRECRACKER AWARDS AND 2 EISNER AWARDS

Five Different 2014 Titles Recognized

NBM Publishing is pleased to announce that five of their 2014 releases have received nominations from two prestigious publishing awards.

The Firecracker Alternative Book Awards herald the best in wildly independent writing and publishing — the people who sharpen the cutting edge, the First-Amendment radicals with a bad attitude.   For many years, The Fireccracker was the leading, most sought after alternative press award, now reincarnated. Ted Rall was one of NBM’s previous winners. This year, NBM has been nominated for three of their five graphic novel nominees:

All Star by Jesse Lonergan
It's the end of the school year in 1998. Mark McGwire is racing Sammy Sosa to break the home run record, Bill Clinton is being questioned about a White House intern named Monica Lewinsky, Semisonic's Closing Time is on top of the charts, and Carl Carter is leading the Elizabeth Monarchs of rural Vermont to the state championship in his senior year. A full scholarship to the University of Maine is waiting for him, and everyone says he has a shot at the pros. He’s so good he can do whatever he wants.

Until he makes one very arrogant mistake.

Beauty by Hubert & Kerascoet

The team behind Miss Don’t Touch Me is back with an engrossing tale for grown-ups on the nature of beauty, both fascinating and corrupting.

When Coddie unintentionally delivers a fairy from a spell that held her prisoner, she does not realize how poisoned the wish is she gets in return. From repulsive and stinking of fish she becomes perceived as magnetically beautiful, which does not help her in her village. A young local lord saves her but soon it becomes apparent her destiny may be far greater…
Family Ties by Eric Hobbs and Noel Tuazon

In Family Ties, an aging Alaskan crime boss looks to retire and divide his empire amongst his three heirs, hoping to secure a future for his children. But when his idealistic son refuses the inheritance, the old man disowns him. This turns out to be a fatal mistake when he sees his cold-blooded daughters use their new-found power and influence against him. Inspired by the classic play King Lear, This epic tale of betrayal and loss combines The Godfather with Shakespearean tragedy.
As announced earlier today, The Eisner Awards, the top recognition for achievements in comic books for the previous year, honored NBM with two nominations for 2014:
Best Humor Publication:
Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff Like That. And Cats. by Jim Benton
Bestselling cartoonist Jim Benton of It’s Happy Bunny and Dear Dumb Diary fame has also been posting whimsical, dry humored, at times nasty, cartoons on Reddit. They have become one of the site’s most popular items. At last, here is a collection all in one place! From wry observation of the absurdities of life to acerbic comment, to poetic musings, from cats and dogs to humans, from one size to another, one style to another, this compendium will amaze as to the breadth of Benton’s inexhaustible talent for humor.

Best Publication Design:
Street View designed by Pascale Rabaté
A visually incomparable treat and a brilliant homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window, this unusual accordion book opens in two directions. One, a series of ten tableaux on a street scene as it evolves during the day. The next on 10 evening tableaux of the same view. A window may serve as a source of light and fresh air, but it also presents a view onto the life of a street and its many other windows, each a separate scene of its own, with its multitude of on-going stories developing before your eyes. Within those windows, you can witness the lives of single people, couples, families, stories of love, separation and possibly even… murder.
