Studio 407 Picks Up the Critically Acclaimed Smuggling Spirits.
February 4, 2009 - Studio 407 is thrilled to announce that they have acquired Ben Fisher and Michael Henderson’s Smuggling Spirits for publication. After it was announced last year that Ambrosia would be shutting down, Studio 407 jumped at the chance to have Smuggling Spirits be apart of their expanding catalog. Last month Studio 407 also finalized a deal with Argentina's Altercomics that will bring their most popular titles to North America.
Studio 407's managing director Alex Leung says "We picked up Smuggling Spirits from Ambrosia, and we thought it was an incredible book that went under the radar, and did not get the exposure it deserved when it was first released in single volumes. I think both Ben and Michael are incredible talents to watch for and their skills have meshed perfectly to produce an incredibly unique storytelling experience. We feel extremely fortunate to be involved with this book."
Preview Smuggling Spirits at: http://studio-407.com/spirits/preview.html
Leung continues. "The difference between this and the Ambrosia release is that it collects all the volumes of the original series into a handsome, full-sized hardcover book, that people will love to have on their coffee table. With the stark, red and black cover, it will definitely be eye-catching and compel people to pick it up. There are also 12 pages of additional artwork and a new ending as well that the creators felt was closer to what they originally envisioned, so you can easily call this the definitive, ‘director’s cut’ edition."
Smuggling Spirits is described as: Set in a nightmarish vision of the past where deadly monstrosities called “darklings” roam the shadows of Prohibition-Era America, Al Stone is a bootlegger who finds himself on the run when he inadvertently stumbles upon the bloody secret of the creatures’ survival. As the beasts close in to take back what’s theirs, Al and his young ward, Nathan, must make their final stand. Smuggling Spirits is a pulse pounding, thrill ride that blends the action noir of Sin City with the horror and suspense of Hellboy. Read what Rue Morgue calls “a shot of white lightning.”
****Chosen as a Staff Pick in the February Previews*****
Comics Bulletin says Smuggling Spirits is “For any fan of the horror genre…harsh, humorous and all together weird.”
Ain’t It Cool News calls it “Road to Perdition with monsters…I really liked this one.”
You can pre-order Smuggling Spirits now by using the Diamond order code: DCD item # FEB094452

Rick Remender masterminds the Last Days of American Crime for Radical Publishing
February 5th, 2009 – What if the U.S. government perfected a broadcast signal that could extinguish criminal thoughts? If you were a grifter with only 10 days before the signal went live, you’d find the crime of the century that you’d been planning suddenly transformed into the last crime in American history—if you can pull it off.
Radical Publishing is proud to announce its newest title for 2009, The Last Days of American Crime. Created and written by fan-favorite comics scribe Rick Remender, the series represents Radical’s first foray into the crime genre. Issue #1 hits the stands later this year, with illustrations by new breakout artist Greg Tocchini.
"The Last Days of American Crime is a story I've been itching to scratch for a few years now,” Remender says. “Fans of my creator-owned books Fear Agent or XXXombies will be right at home with this one. And Greg Tocchini is a powerhouse, one of the best artists I've ever worked with, a true future superstar. Radical is a perfect home for the project, so I'm having a blast."
Radical President and Publisher Barry Levine added, “As a longtime fan of the crime genre, I’m really excited by this. Rick presented me a premise that is so full of suspense and great action that I jumped on board immediately. Besides an amazing story, Greg’s art is just incredible—he’s exactly the kind of great young artist that I love discovering for our books.”
More details on The Last Days of American Crime will be revealed at Radical Publishing’s New York Comic-Con panel on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 5:15 p.m. in Room 1A07.

Worldwide bids can be placed either in person, via mail, phone, fax or live on the internet via Live Auctioneers.com (HYPERLINK "http://www.LiveAuctioneers.com" www.LiveAuctioneers.com).
"The Bela Lugosi Dracula ring, the cape he wore from the 30's stage performances of Dracula and the robe he wore in The Raven are the most significant Universal horror items to ever come to public auction," said Joe Maddalena, President and CEO of Profiles in History.
Forrest J Ackerman (Please note: There is NO period after the "J") who recently passed away, was an American collector of science fiction books and movie memorabilia and a science fiction fan. Ackerman, known as "Forry" or "The Ackermonster" or "4e" or "4SJ" or "Forjak" was influential in the formation, organization, and spread of science fiction fandom in its early years, and served as a key figure in the wider cultural perception of science fiction as a literary, art and film genre. Ackerman is also remembered as the editor-writer of the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, as well as for being an occasional author, actor, producer (Vampirella), and literary agent.
Ackerman was noted for having amassed an extremely large and complete collection of science fiction, fantasy and horror film memorabilia, which was, until 2002, maintained in a remarkable home/museum known as the 18-room "Ackermansion" in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles, filled with 300,000 books and pieces of movie memorabilia. He was credited with nurturing and even inspiring the careers of several early contemporaries like Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, Charles Beaumont, Marion Zimmer Bradley and L. Ron Hubbard. He was Ed Wood's "illiterary" agent and represented over 200 authors of science fiction and fantasy.
Through his magazine, Famous Monsters of Filmland (1958-1983), Ackerman introduced the history of the science fiction, fantasy and horror film genres to a generation of young readers. At a time when most movie-related publications glorified the stars in front of the camera, "Uncle Forry", as he was referred to by many of his fans, promoted the behind-the-scenes artists involved in the magic of movies. In this way Ackerman provided inspiration to many who would later become successful artists, including Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Stephen King, Penn & Teller, Billy Bob Thornton, Gene Simmons (of the band Kiss), Rick Baker, George Lucas, Danny Elfman, Frank Darabont, John Landis and countless other writers, directors, artists and craftsmen.
A life-long fan of science fiction "B-movies", Ackerman had cameos in over 210 films, including bit parts in many monster movies including The Howling, Innocent Blood, Return of the Living Dead Part II, Amazon Women on the Moon, as well as an appearance in Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

IDW Releases 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: JUAREZ TPB
From fan favorite creators Matt Fraction and Ben Templesmith
(San Diego, CA; Feb 5) – For girls living in Juarez, Mexico, life can be brief, brutal, and tends to end bloody. Some say up to 200 are “missing”… others less optimistic say 400 or more. Someone or something has made killing them a sport, and the authorities are less than motivated when it comes to solving the crimes. Girls have gone “missing” in Juarez for as long as anyone can remember, and like the hellish drudgery of the factories most of them work in, it’s become a way of life. And besides, what are a few more dead girls in a place like this?
Enter Lex Nova, a former private detective and free-range madmen, and the best chance the people of Juarez have of ridding themselves of this plague of murder and death. But corruption runs far deeper in this hole-in-the-wall town than anyone suspects, where death is something of a business, and the stakes have just been raised.
But before Lex finally figures out who’s behind it all things are about get to much, much worse, for him and the girls of Juarez…
From fan favorite writer Matt Fraction (Invincible Iron Man, Casanova) and Eisner and International Horror Guild Award-Nominated artist and 30 Days of Night co-creator Ben Templesmith, comes this disturbing and gruesome addition to the 30 Days of Night world of the undead.
Originally published in the monthly series 30 Days of Night: Blood Sucker Tales, this 8-issue arc is collected for the first time in one sleek volume. In addition to the main story 30 Days of Night: Juarez includes an art gallery by Templesmith.

BLOOM COUNTY LIBRARY TO COLLECT ENTIRE RUN
OF CLASSIC AMERICAN COMIC STRIP
(San Diego, February 6, 2009) IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of The Bloom County Library. Beginning in October 2009, each of the five volumes will collect nearly two years worth of daily and Sunday strips, in chronological order. This will be the very first time that many of these comic strips have been collected, and the first time in a beautifully designed, hardcover format. The books will be part of IDW’s Library of American Comics imprint, and designed by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney.
"Fans have pestered me for years,” said Berkeley Breathed, “for this ultimate Bloom County collection in that polite, respectful badgering way that only fans can manage. Thank God I can now tell them something better than just 'please remove your tent from my lawn.' I can say, 'It's coming!"
Berkeley Breathed’s Bloom County is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed newspaper strips of modern times. Premiering on December 8th, 1980 — a month after the election of Ronald Reagan as President — the strip brought to the comics pages a unique amalgam of contemporary politics and fantasy, all told with hilarious humor and wit.
The beloved and quirky denizens of Bloom County include Opus, Steve Dallas, Bill the Cat, Milo Bloom, Michael Binkley, and Cutter John. Breathed was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987 for his work on Bloom County. The strip was published in an astounding 1200 newspapers.
The phenomenon that was Bloom County spawned a merchandizing bonanza, as well as two spin-off strips, Outland and Opus. The first paperback collection of the strip, Loose Tails, sold over one million copies. Bloom County paperbacks cumulatively sold over six million copies. At the height of the strip’s popularity, Breathed walked away on August 6th, 1989.
IDW Publishing Special Projects Editor Scott Dunbier conceived the series. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be editing the Bloom County Library,” said Dunbier. “This is a series that I can’t wait to hold in my hands.”
The Bloom County Library will also contain a series of “Context Pages” sprinkled throughout the volumes. These pages will provide perspective for the reader, presenting a variety of real-life events and personalities that were contemporary at the time of original publication.

Captain Rex and Commander Cody must find the traitor in their ranks in “Hidden Enemy,” an all-new episode of the hit animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, premiering at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, Feb. 6, on Cartoon Network.
In the episode, the clones discover evidence that one of their brothers is leaking information to the enemy. Faced with the betrayal, Cody and Rex must uncover the spy before he is able to thwart the Republic’s efforts to liberate Christophsis from a Separatist siege.
Director Steward Lee and writer Drew Greenberg were both drawn to the chance to look at the first break in the ranks of the clones – an ominous sign of things to come.
“I thought it was interesting because the clone’s logic is understandable,” Lee says. “He no longer wants to be just a slave to the Jedi, and wants to try and break that infrastructure. He thinks he’s doing the right thing for all the clones and that the sacrifice is worth it.”
“It’s all about the brotherhood, and how far those boundaries stretch,” Greenberg adds. “Even the guy who turns out to be the bad guy makes the case that he was doing it for his brothers. This is about what it means to be a clone and what it means to be part of that brotherhood.”
“If one Clone can break from his brothers, and what he is bred for as a soldier of the Republic, and act on his own," Lee says, " how many more would do the same? This creates an interesting beginning of something to come.”

About Wallace & Gromit
Wallace
An endearing and affable inventor. Ever enthusiastic, Wallace's hair-brained, over-ambitious, yet well intentioned ideas consistently get him and his faithful hound into trouble. A definite penchant for cheese and crackers, not to mention fashionable knitwear!
Gromit
Wallace's long-suffering loyal pooch. Gromit cares greatly for Wallace even though he's often railroaded into his master's mad-cap plans. Though cultured and sensitive, preferring order and the quiet life, Gromit displays amazing courage and heroism when it comes to getting his master out of self-made scrapes. Always showing astonishing initiative, Gromit is definitely the intelligent one of the pair.

BBC AMERICA ANNOUNCES THREE SCI FI DRAMAS –BEING HUMAN, SURVIVORS AND A NEW SEASON OF PRIMEVAL
BBC AMERICA today announced three highly anticipated sci-fi dramas: BBC AMERICA co-production Being Human and the acquisitions of Survivors and a new season of Primeval. All three shows will premiere later in 2009.
BEING HUMAN - U.S. PREMIERE
Mixing the mythic with the commonplace, the farcical with the horrific and the domestic with the epic, this BBC AMERICA co-production is a witty and extraordinary look into the lives of three twenty-somethings and their secret double-lives – as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. The trio do their best to live their lives as normally as possible, despite their strange and dark secrets. But with unwelcome intruders into their world, a threatened revolution from the vampire underworld and constant threats of exposure – on top of the day-to-day issues faced by young people – the only thing they may be able to rely on in their heightened world, is each other.
SURVIVORS - U.S. PREMIERE
The chilling new apocalyptic drama, Survivors, focuses on the world in the aftermath of a virus that has wiped out 99% of the human race. The lonely few who remain struggle to start over in a devastated world where everything that was once safe and familiar is now strange and dangerous. At the center of the story is a bewildered but resilient group of survivors led by Abby Grant (Julie Graham), a woman whose strength comes from a burning need to find out if her young son is still alive. This brave new world brings an opportunity for new beginnings, but also terrible dangers – not just the daily struggle for food and water, but a deadly threat from other survivors.
PRIMEVAL - U.S. PREMIERE
Sci-fi thriller Primeval roars back onto BBC AMERICA. When evolutionary zoologist Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) discovers prehistoric creatures alive and well in the present day, the natural world is turned on its head and humanity faces a threat to its very existence. Unexplained anomalies are ripping holes in the fabric of time, allowing creatures to roam the modern world. In the new season Cutter struggles with the death of his assistant and his wife’s betrayal, while the cloak of secrecy behind which they’ve been working is beginning to slip.
BBC AMERICA brings audiences a new generation of award-winning television featuring news with a uniquely global perspective, provocative dramas, razor-sharp comedies and life-changing makeovers. BBC AMERICA pushes the boundaries to deliver high quality, highly addictive and eminently watchable programming to viewers who demand more. BBC AMERICA is distributed by Discovery Networks. Radical wins Diamond’s Gem Award for Best New Publisher
February 3rd, 2009 – Radical Publishing is proud to announce that they have been awarded New Comic Book Publisher of the Year for 2008 by Diamond Comics Distribution, the major comic book distributor in North America. Voted on by the comic book store retailers, based on overall impact on the industry, sales performance, quality and creativity, the Gem Awards represent Diamond's annual recognition of outstanding suppliers in the comic book specialty market.
“To say that I am extremely proud of this award is an understatement,” said Radical’s President and Publisher Barry Levine. “It validates all the hard work and long hours that everyone involved with the company has put in for both launching and running Radical.”
The 19th annual awards recognized Radical for its publications of Hercules: The Thracian Wars and Caliber: First Canon of Justice, the company’s two flagship titles that debuted in May to sellout performances; along with the follow-up titles Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland and City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story, both of which garnered rave reviews, and the deluxe hardcover publication Mateki: The Magic Flute, from international storytelling sensation Yoshitaka Amano.
Both Hercules: The Thracian Wars and Caliber: First Canon of Justice have already been collected into hardcover omnibus editions; a City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story collected edition, from celebrated horror writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), has already been scheduled, as has a sequel to the hit Hercules series, once again from veteran scribe Steve Moore and art contributions by comics legend Jim Steranko. All of Radical’s titles have featured painted artwork on deluxe, glossy paper, with some of the highest production values in the industry. Many of Radical’s titles have already garnered the interest of Hollywood, with noted directors and producers such as John Woo, Peter Berg, and Bryan Singer attached.
“I started Radical Publishing with the commitment to releasing only the best books in terms of both story and illustration,” Levine said. “Given that we were only in business for eight months for 2008 with just five titles, we definitely achieved that, and will continue to do so for this year and beyond. I want to thank all the retailers not only for their votes, but also for their overall support for this relatively new company. I would also like to thank the press for their write-ups for all of our books and to the comic fans who purchase and read them.”
Current series from Radical include Shrapnel: Aristeia Rising, a space opera that has received uniformly stellar reviews in both the industry and mainstream press, as well as Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead, from fan-favorite creators Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis, which the Philadelphia Daily News just hailed as “lightning in a bottle” and received its “highest possible recommendation.”
Upcoming titles include Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost, a dark and epic retelling of the famous fable with art by Radical’s exclusive artist Patrick Reilly and story by Ian Edginton; FVZA: Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency, being written by David Hine; and The Last Days of American Crime created and written by Rick Remender.
About Radical Publishing

Radical Publishing brings the best writing, storytelling and fully painted cover and interior art to the global comic book market, from prominent international talents such as YOSHITAKA AMANO, JOHN BOLTON, LUIS ROYO, JIM STERANKO, STEVE PUGH, WARREN ELLIS, ARTHUR SUYDAM, STEVE NILES, MARKO DJURDJEVIC, IAN EDGINTON, DAVID HINE, RICK REMENDER, JOSEPH KOSINSKI, NICK PERCIVAL, STEVE MOORE, SAM SARKAR, STJEPAN SEJIC, DAVE WILKINS, TOMM COKER, CLAYTON CRAIN, BILL SIENKIEWICZ, NICK SAGAN, CLINT LANGLEY, NICK SIMMONS, PATRICK REILLY, WETA WORKSHOP, ZOMBIE STUDIOS and many more.
Radical Publishing currently has production deals with Universal Studios, Spyglass Entertainment, PETER BERG's Film 44 and Radical Pictures for HERCULES; JOHN WOO's Lion Rock Productions, JOHNNY DEPP's Infinitum Nihil and Radical Pictures for CALIBER; and BRYAN SINGER's Bad Hat Harry Productions and Radical Pictures for FREEDOM FORMULA.

Dracula vs. King Arthur, the popular series published by Silent Devil, has found a new home on the web via Lead Pipe Entertainment and Eagle One Media. The entire saga will be released weekly in 8 chapters available at $1.99 each. In the story, Vlad Tepes of the Dracul Order and his empire are about to be overrun by the Turkish Army. He will certainly be killed, unless he makes a deal with Lucifer himself. Vlad will become Dracula, the first vampire, and be sent back to the time of Camelot to destroy King Arthur.
The series received universal acclaim upon its release, with Ain't It Cool News saying they "[hadn't] had this much fun reading a comic in a good long while." Copies of the single issues quickly sold out, just like the collected edition a year later. No new print editions have been planned for the immediate future, so your chance to read what everyone is talking about is here: http://www.eagleonemedia.com/comicdownloadstore_IndyPub_LeadPipe.php
Dracula vs. King Arthur is in development as a feature film with Ahmet Zappa's Monsterfoot Productions attached to produce. Series co-creator Christian Beranek has been tapped to pen the script. Says Beranek about the deal with Eagle One: "Our story is one of the most pirated indie comics ever made. This led us to believe there was a market for a web version of the book. Eagle One Media gives readers a chance to get the definitive version of the title in a legitimate format, with series artist Chris Moreno providing additional, never before seen cover artwork."
For more information about Eagle One Media please visit http://www.eagleonemedia.com
Lead Pipe Entertainment is a Los Angeles based production company run by Christian Beranek and Thomas Mauer. The company has a first look film/tv deal with Disney/ABC and is currently hard at work launching the Kingdom Comics line of books. In addition, it provides consulting and freelance services to a multitude of multi-media entities. The crew at Lead Pipe are never late for dinner.

VINCENT PRICE PRESENTS GOES TO THE MOVIES AND GETS NEW BLOOD.
Bluewater's popular gothic horror series "Vincent Price Presents" has been featured in “Fangoria”, “Horror Hound” and “Rue Morgue”. The comic series will now include Price’s iconic movie roles such as "DR Phibes," "The Tingler" and "House of Usher".
"What most people do not realize about this series is these stories are one shots,” said Publisher Darren G. Davis "Each of the 24-page comics is set up like an episode of the “Twilight Zone”. It makes every issue a great place for new readers to jump into the series”.
Bluewater's series “Vincent Price Presents” is described as: One of classic Hollywood's most famous scary men, Vincent Price made a name for himself in classic mysteries and thrillers throughout the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Now Vincent Price Presents comes to Bluewater Productions as their 1st ongoing monthly series. The series will feature some of Price’s films as well as developing new frightening ones with his estate. Welcome back to the macabre world of Vincent Price.
Pat Broderick is penciling new issues of “Vincent Price Presents”. Broderick is best known for his work on the Mirconauts. Broderick also penciled the four-part Batman: Year 3 story line, written by Marv Wolfman, which detailed the first meeting of Batman & Tim Drake. Also has penciled for other DC Comics titles “The Fury of Firestorm” and “Captain Atom”.
“Being a 55 year old adult I grew up with Vincent Price”. Said artist Pat Broderick, “His tremendous body of work entertained a young man who was lucky enough to be aloud to stay up past midnight to watch all of his classic horror movies. Those were the best, no hacking, no guts in your face. When Bluewater offered me this I knew that it would be fun. I approached the storytelling in a wide screen story boarding format, which is perfect for this story”
Mark L. Miller who will be writing “The Tingler” has been reviewing comics for “Ain't It Cool News.com” under the penname Ambush Bug. Mark's short comic fiction has been published in Cream City Comics “Muscles and Fights 3” and it's spin-off Muscles and Frights”.

Mel Smith & Clark Castillo who are the creative team behind Image Comics
"Dead Ahead" series has developed one of the two sequels featuring the cult character “DR. Phibes”. Adriano, who developed a graphic novel featuring Baron Münchausen, created the other “DR Phibes” comic.
“Vincent Price Presents” #5 will be in stores this month with a cover by Joel Robinson. In April, “Vincent Price Presents: Gallery of Terror” one-shot which features images of classic gothic horror icon Vincent Price.

DARK HORSE SALUTES THE DARK ANGEL, BETTIE PAGE
FEBRUARY 2, MILWAUKIE, OR — In December 2008, the world bid a sad farewell to one of the most celebrated and imitated glamour icons in history. Throughout the 1950s, Bettie Page carved her own niche in the popular pinup photography industry by seamlessly melding her college-coed, southern-belle charm with some of the most risqué themes and poses of the day. Her trademark bangs became the unofficial badge of honor for girls in the rockabilly revival movement of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and her style still resonates throughout the world today.
Dark Horse Comics has paid homage to Bettie and her good-girl-gone-bad persona for the better part of the past decade, producing over one hundred licensed products for Bettie Page collectors to enjoy. Continuing the tradition, this spring will see the addition of two new items to their extensive list of collectibles for the Bettie Page fan. Dark Horse attempts to bring the same sense of fun that Bettie herself brought to her photo sessions with two new coffee mugs, both featuring a photograph taken by world-famous model-turned-photog Bunny Yeager. The first mug depicts Bettie looking sultry as ever in her infamous leopard bikini with a background of tan leopard spots. The second mug features a variant of the same photo, with a twist. Bettie is wearing a black bikini against a background of blue leopard spots; when filled with a hot beverage, the spots fade to a solid blue background as the bikini fades to reveal a topless Bettie Page!
“It has been a real thrill to work with Bettie over the years,” Product Development head David Scroggy recalled. “While we have always had fun with her image, as Bettie herself did, we have also always treated her with respect and affection. Everything we have done to date has been officially licensed as well, as are these new mugs. I hope everyone who winds up with one of these mugs likes their coffee extra hot!”
Both mugs will be available at retail stores in May, with a suggested price of $12.99 (non-changing) and $14.99 (heat-sensitive).

PHILIP MORRIS AND DEKKER DREYER PRESENT NEW SERIES, EMISSARY
NEW YORK, NY February 3rd, 2009 All those attending New York Comic Con are invited to a special panel presentation of Emissary the new series starring Philip Morris. The panel takes place Friday, February 6th at 6pm and will include the first look at Emissarys teaser footage and a Q&A with the stars.
Emissary is the story of anthropologist Campbell Essex discovering his destiny as the latest in a line of Emissaries or peak humans. Constantly pursued by ancient enemies who seek his power, Campbell struggles to overcome his own limitations before its too late.
The series, created by Philip Morris and Dekker Dreyer, spans several hundred years and touches on serious issues of what it means to be human while bringing a new level of brutal realism to the sci-fi / fantasy genre.
As an actor, I have had wonderful experiences in the sci-fi / action-adventure world. With "Emissary", I get a chance to bring my own sense of expression to this vital genre, as an actor, producer, and writer. I also get the chance to use skills that the audience may not know that I truly possess, like the martial arts. In meeting Dekker Dreyer and collaborating with him, it has all come together, and I'm very grateful. I am excited to bring this to the fans, and hope that they appreciate what we're doing. Being a comic book geek myself, it's important to me to honor the fans with this material. We're a picky bunch, and if they like it, I will be happy. Philip Morris, co-creator.
With New York City being the primary backdrop for the first leg of the series, the creative team hopes to craft a rich bed to the action.
I live in NYC and there are plenty of strange things that happen there every day. We wanted danger to be around every corner. Old buildings, old mysteries strange people, those things excite me. At its core Emissary is a fantastic story and its easy for a show to stretch too far from a believable, grounded universe. Phil and I are both big fans of hiding the extraordinary inside the everyday. Here we have elements of a dark real-world story, but ultimately its a hopeful fantasy. Dekker Dreyer, co-creator.
The Emissary cast includes Philip Morris (Smallville), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica), Brian Thompson (X-File, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Emmy nominee Thaao Penghlis with additional cast members Yuri Lowenthal and J LaRose in attendance at the NYCC panel.
The series, produced by Mnemosyne LLC and the Emissary Partners, is scheduled to begin production in late 2009 currently slated for IPTV distribution.

This system can also simultaneously show adjacent video of the photographers discussing their work.
The selected work of the artists, though greatly contrasting in style and tone, all speak to the mission of the Photography Space, which is to celebrate photography as an art form and present images focused on the human condition. Anne Wilkes Tucker, Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography from the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, served as Special Advisor for the opening installation. Of the artists featured in "L8S ANG3LES" Ms. Tucker comments, "The vision of these photographers reflects the vast talent and energy that have made Los Angeles into a world class city in less than a century."
Annenberg Foundation Vice President, Wallis Annenberg, commented, "I have a passion for photography and a great pride in the fine city of Los Angeles. I am thrilled that artists of this magnitude are taking part in our inaugural show and know that through their brilliance they will bring great inspiration to the visitors of this new space which we are creating and operating as a gift to the community."
The exhibit will include work from:
· John Baldassari (www.baldessari.com) John Baldassari is one of the most sought after artists of our time. He is a recipient of the Americans for the Arts lifetime achievement award and the Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in Visual Arts in California. He has shown his work in over 200 solo exhibitions, and taken part in more than 750 group shows. Employing humor and irony to convey his thoughts, he takes his own photographs or appropriates images from popular culture to make large scale artworks.
· Carolyn Cole is a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 2004, for her coverage of the siege of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. Ms. Cole has specialized in photographs of children living in war torn areas such as Israel, Liberia and Iraq, but her newest coverage has ranged from the Israeli war with Gaza to the recent inauguration of Barack Obama. She has repeatedly placed herself in situations of danger around the world in order to report on issues that she believes should be covered.
· Greg Gorman (www.greggormanphotography.com) Greg Gorman began his career in 1968 when he photographed a Jimi Hendrix concert, which led to coverage of the sixties rock movement. Over the decades, he has captured famous people in film, music, sports and the art world, ranging from Bette Davis and Leonardo DiCaprio to David Hockney and Philip Johnson. Working in a high key, black and white style, he developed a distinctive look for his images, which he later brought to his photographs of nudes. He has also produced music videos.
· Lauren Greenfield (www.laurengreenfield.com) Lauren Greenfield's work features the dark side of the idealized world of stardom and celebrity. Her work focuses on issues relating to youth culture, gender identity, body image, eating disorders, money and the influence of popular culture on how we live. Ms. Greenfield has published several books and has directed a feature-length documentary entitled Thin, as well as the follow-up short film kids + money for HBO.
· Douglas Kirkland (www.douglaskirkland.com) Douglas Kirkland became famous for his photographs of Marilyn Monroe in 1961 and has since photographed generations of actors, ranging from those of the Golden Age to today. He is also known for his work as a set photographer having work on more than one hundred films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Titanic and most recently Australia. He began his career as a staff photographer for Look and Life magazines and has continued to freelance for major publications.
· Catherine Opie came to art-world prominence in the mid-1990s as an artist specializing in issues within portraiture and documentary photography. Throughout her work she has investigated aspects of social culture, taking portraits of many groups including the gay and lesbian community, surfers, and most recently high school football players. Ms. Opie has also focused on the cultural and literal landscapes in and around various cities in the United States, including Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Pittsburg where she's explored how identities are projected by our architecture.
· Julius Shulman For over 72-years Julius Shulman has played a major role in crafting the images of the Los Angeles and Southern California lifestyle as they came to be perceived by the world. He is best known for his iconic photographs of landmark buildings such as the Kaufman House in Palm Springs, "Case Study House #22" and the Stahl House designed by Pierre Koenig, where he used people to humanize the cool international style. He continues to photograph today.
· Timothy Street-Porter (www.timstreet-porter.com) Tim Street-Porter has documented architecture for nearly 30 years. Through his lens visitors can see a Los Angeles that no longer exists, as well as new buildings such as the Disney Center and the restorations of historical modern and vernacular architectural treasures. He was inspired by the city's unique quality of light, which he has used to great effect over the years with his eloquent photographs.
The Photography Space will also offer the public programs, which will include lectures and workshops related to "L8S ANG3LES." Additional dates will be announced as available. Also, while I have you, I'm going to be hosting a bunch of panels at Gallifrey One, better known as the U.S.A.'s only Doctor Who convention. All kinds of awesome Doctor Who related special guests (and even pal-o-mine Tony Lee!), and a whole lot of fun guaranteed. More info available here: http://www.gallifreyone.com/gallifrey.php
And that's that. See you guys next week!

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (VOL III):
CENTURY #1 ("1910")
by Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neill
Co-Published By Top Shelf Productions & Knockabout
http://www.topshelfcomix.com/catalog.php?type=12&title=583
-- DIAMOND ORDER CODE: FEB09 4465
-- ISBN: 978-1-60309-000-1
-- Format: 6 5/8" x 10 1/8" graphic novel, full-color
-- Page Count / Binding: 80 pages, perfect-bound softcover
-- Audience: Mature readers (16+)
-- Retail Price: $7.95 (US)
At last! The League returns, better than ever! It's a new age,
a new publisher, and an all-new adventure, packed with even
more metafictional fisticuffs and diachronic derring-do!
Top Shelf is proud to announce the all-new chapter in the
breathtaking series by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.
In The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vol III):
Century #1 ("1910"), our familiar cast of Victorian literary
characters (or what's left of them) enters the brave new world
of the 20th century!
The present installment is set against a backdrop of London,
1910, twelve years after the failed Martian invasion and nine
years since England put a man upon the moon. In the bowels of
the British Museum, Carnacki the ghost-finder is plagued by
visions of a shadowy occult order who are attempting to create
something called a Moonchild, while on London's dockside the
most notorious serial murderer of the previous century has
returned to carry on his grisly trade. Working for Mycroft
Holmes' British Intelligence alongside a rejuvenated Allan
Quatermain, the reformed thief Anthony Raffles and the eternal
warrior Orlando, Miss Murray is drawn into a vile opera acted
out upon the waterfront by players that include the furiously
angry Pirate Jenny and the charismatic butcher known as Mac the
Knife. Sounds like a ripping good tale, eh?
This book will be the first of three deluxe, 80-page,
full-color, perfect-bound graphic novellas, by the original
League of Extraordinary Creators: Alan Moore, Kevin O'Neill,
Ben Dimagmaliw (colors), and Todd Klein (lettering). Each
self-contained narrative takes place in three distinct eras,
building to an apocalyptic conclusion occurring in our own
twenty-first century!

and are ready to guide us again, this time through the realms of
our sexual awakening and fulfillment. Through their familiar
fairytales they share with us their most intimate revelations
of desire in its many forms, revelations that shine out
radiantly through the dark clouds of war gathering around a
luxury Austrian hotel. Drawing on the rich heritage of erotica,
Lost Girls is the rediscovery of the power of ecstatic writing
and art in a sublime union that only the medium of comics can
achieve. Exquisite, thoughtful, and human, Lost Girls is a work
of breathtaking scope that challenges the very notion of art
fettered by convention. This is erotic fiction at its finest.
