HERE COMES THE BRIDE ON THE NIGHT OF ALL NIGHTS
Beloved comic writer Neil Gaiman returns to "Forbidden Brides"
MILWAUKIE, Ore., July 14, 2016—Dark Horse is excited to announce Neil Gaiman (Sandman) is returning to one of his darkly complicated short stories in Neil Gaiman’s Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire. Originally published as a short story in Gaiman’s collection Fragile Things, Forbidden Brides has been adapted by Shane Oakley into a stunning hardcover graphic novel. Gaiman’s most recent graphic novel, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, debuted at number three on the New York Times bestseller list.
This haunting example of satirical gothic literature tells the story of a writer struggling to compose nonfiction on a dark, stormy night. Wishing to create serious stories about frail women in white nightgowns, mysterious bumps in the night, and the undead rising to collect old debts, the author is unsuccessful because of his tendency to insert comedy into his dark tales. Talking ravens, family disagreements, and interruptions from his creepy butler further hinder his literary efforts.
Writer Neil Gaiman explained the overarching theme of Forbidden Brides and the aspects of this story that influenced Sandman: “It’s about what fantasy is, and why we write it, and what it would mean to write fantasy if you lived in a Gothic universe. Some of it prefigured things I’d do in Sandman four years later.”
Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire goes on sale January 25, 2017. The hardcover graphic novel is available for preorder from Penguin Random House and Amazon.
The Fragile Things anthology received much fanfare:
“In an ironic story called ‘Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire,’ a struggling author cannot stop writing fiction that reads like awful parodies of horror fiction, because his life itself is an awful parody of horror fiction. ‘It’s not the satirist in you that makes you lampoon the commonplace and the humdrum,’ he is told by a talking raven. ‘Merely boredom with the way things are. D’you see?’” — The New York Times
“Gaiman began as a journalist, wrote comics and now writes everything from poetry to films. His work shows the ease with which he moves between these worlds; he straddles many genres and crosses many lines, one of which is the (sometimes invisible) line between adult and young adult fiction.” — BookPage

CANNIBAL COOKS UP THRILLS
IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN

New ongoing southern-gothic series set to launch this October
Image Comics is pleased to announce that New York Times bestselling author Brian Buccellato (SONS OF THE DEVIL, The Flash, Injustice), Jennifer Young, and artist Matias Bergara (Sons of Anarchy) are teaming up for a southern-gothic horror series set to launch this October.

In CANNIBAL #1 a small Everglades town is hit by a new virus that causes those it infects to crave human flesh. But with no cure in sight, the region has become split over what to do with the victims. For the Hansen family the answer is simple: kill them. However all of that changes when the virus infects those the family cares about most.

“It’s about a Florida town that is just trying to hold onto their everyday lives at the dawn of a cannibal epidemic,” said Young. “Told through the eyes of the Hansen family, it’s an anti-apocalypse story because mankind is too stubborn to give in. It’s a about family and community, and explores how people respond to the spread of deadly diseases.”

“These cannibals are just like us. They feel remorse and guilt and don’t want to eat people,” added Buccellato. “But the virus manifests as an insurmountable addiction that builds up until they can’t control themselves. After they feed and sate their hunger, they must face the guilt and ramifications of their actions. At it’s heart, it’s an allegory for drug addiction.”

Young continued: “In a world where your neighbor, your friend, your barber could suddenly try to eat you, this story is also about mankind’s resolve and deeply-ingrained desire to maintain the status quo—so deep that they will assimilate the idea of cannibals into their normal life.”

This is the second collaboration by Buccellato, Young, and Bergara, following the short story, “Jennifer” which appeared in SONS OF THE DEVIL, VOL. 1.

CANNIBAL #1 (Diamond Code AUG160575) will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, October 5th. The final order cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, September 12th.

HENCHGIRL, THE VILLAIN WITH A HEART OF GOLD
Dark Horse publishes collection of Kristen Gudsnuk’s “Henchgirl”
MILWAUKIE, Ore., July 12, 2016 — Dark Horse is excited to announce the trade publication of the Henchgirl collection from Kristen Gudsnuk. Henchgirl is a unique series that subverts the typical superhero trope by telling the story from the perspective of a villain.
Originally published by Scout Comics, Henchgirl depicts the complexities of Mary Posa’s life. The daughter of Crepe City’s most famous superhero couple, Mary deals with the pressure of disappointing her family while avoiding the wrath of Monsieur Butterfly, her supervillain boss. Cursed with a conscience, Mary does everything she can to be something other than a henchgirl, but her plans for freedom always go awry.
Henchgirl creator Kristen Gudsnuk described the parallels between Mary’s life and her own: “A lot of Henchgirl comes from my own experiences of being a twenty-something stuck in a dead-end job. Luckily, I turned to comics instead of villainy. I’ve always loved filtering superhero and pop culture tropes through my own cynical perspective.”
The Henchgirl trade goes on sale March 29, 2017.
Henchgirl is a favorite of comic book fans:
“There’s an incredible balance of humor and darkness of the soul in this series…Henchgirl is the best book you’re not reading and it has everything you want from the genre.” — Comic Bastards
“Lovely and endearing but funny and clever [at] the same time.” — Girls Like Comics
