Girl detective inspires nominee to great achievements

OBAMA CITES NANCY DREW IN NAMING SOTOMAYOR TO SUPREME COURT

Plus: Obama guest-stars in Hardy Boys graphic novel

In nominating Judge Sonia Sotamayor for the Supreme Court, President Obama twice mentioned America’s most famous girl detective. “Judge Sotomayor's interest in the law was sparked as a young girl by reading the Nancy Drew series. And that when she was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 8, she was informed that people with diabetes can't grow up to be police officers or private investigators like Nancy Drew. In essence, she was told she'd have to scale back her dreams.”
Nancy Drew will soon celebrate her 80th anniversary, with over 200 titles in print from Grosset & Dunlap, Simon & Schuster, and graphic novel publisher Papercutz. The website iParenting.com has recently given Papercutz’s NANCY DREW graphic novel #15 the iParenting Media Award as an outstanding product for children, and ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY calls Nancy one of the “20 All-Time Coolest Heroes in Pop Culture.”

“As someone who is part Puerto Rican, who spent my early years, like Judge Sonia Sotamayor, growing up in a housing project in The Bronx, it was quite thrilling to hear that she was the President’s nominee for the Supreme Court and how inspirational Nancy Drew was to her,” says Jim Salicrup, Editor-in-Chief of Papercutz. “I believe Nancy is just as inspiring today, and continues to embrace the values that have made her such an enduring icon for so many generations.”

President Obama has a cameo apearance in THE HARDY BOYS Graphic Novel #16 “Shhhhhh!”, also from Papercutz. Unlike his other more recent and highly-publicized comic-book appearances, as either a Conan-like Barbarian or Spider-Man’s partner-in-crimefighting, his appearance in the Hardy Boys graphic novel was far more presidential. He’s depicted giving a speech about libraries, something he did in real life as a senator.

NANCY DREW #17, “Night of the Living Chatchke,” is the latest graphic novel from Papercutz. Like the Hardy Boys graphic novels, it is available from booksellers everywhere.

NBM announces convention and publishing plans
NBM AT BOOK EXPO AMERICA
New books from Ted Rall, Luis Royo, and many others

Graphic-novel house NBM Publishing is debuting new books at Book Expo America. BEA, the leading American book-industry trade show, will take place May 29-31 at New York City’s Jacob Javitz Center. NBM’s booth, #2941, will feature:

• THE YEAR OF LOVING DANGEROUSLY by Ted Rall and Pablo G. Callejo. Writer and cartoonist Rall (GENERALISSIMO EL BUSHO, SILK ROAD TO RUIN) and illustrator Callejo (BLUESMAN) tell what happened when -- as Rall says -- “I was expelled from college, evicted from my home, dumped by my girlfriend and fired from my job. Jobless, broke, with no prospects and nowhere to live, I found myself living on the streets of New York City.”

• MALEFIC by Luis Royo. The sold-out collection of sexy, sensuous, horrific fantasy art by master illustrator Royo (DARK LABYRINTH) is back, fully redesigned and stocked with new art. MALEFIC presents Royo’s art for the covers of HEAVY METAL and other magazines. It’s a must for collectors of fantasy art.

• THE BIG KAHN by Neil Kleid & Nicholas Cinquerani. Rabbi Kahn has lived a 40-year lie: he’s not Jewish and never has been. At his funeral, his grifter brother reveals the truth and forces Kahn’s family and congregation to question the nature of faith. Artist Nicolas Cinquegrani will be at the NBM booth, signing a specially printed preview.

• GRAYLIGHT by Naomi Nowak. Nowak (UNHOLY KINSHIP) is one of the most avant-garde young graphic novelists, using multiple media and mixing the real, surreal, and unreal to tell tales of troubled young women. Her newest book is the eerie, compelling GRAYLIGHT.

• JOE AND AZAT by Jesse Lonergan. Lonergan (FLOWER AND FADE) spent eighteen months as a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkmenistan. His adventures spawned this tale of life in one of the world’s oddest nations.

• THINGS UNDONE by Shane White. The author of the acclaimed NORTH COUNTRY is back with a dark comedy. Video-game artist Rick Watt suffers under three incompetent bosses and a kinky art director. His wild imagination helps him cope until his seven-year relationship tailspins. Caught between fantasy and reality, Rick decides to pull the trigger.

THE UNCLOTHED MAN IN THE 35TH CENTURY A.D.

Five -Episode Series will Premiere Exclusively on IFC.com in Conjunction with Fantagraphics Books Release in November 2009

THE UNCLOTHED MAN IN THE 35th CENTURY A.D., by DASH SHAW, will be promoted at the 2009 Book Expo America in New York City, May 29-31, with an appearance by the author on Friday, May 29, at 1:00PM at the Fantagraphics Booth and 4:00PM in the Autographing Area.

New York, NY – May 27, 2009 – IFC.com announced today that it will premiere an original animated web series based on graphic novelist and comic book artist Dash Shaw’s latest book The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D., set for release mid-November, 2009 with the web series following. Shaw’s animation has been widely praised for its eclectic style, innovative design and emotional depth.

Each short episode of this five-part web series chronicles Rebel X-6, a man who works for a well-funded anti-droid organization. The fifth episode will provide behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the series. The premiere on IFC.com marks Dash Shaw’s first animated series and will be based on a story line he has developed for several years. Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books is set to publish a book by the same name and characters.

“Dash Shaw is a known entity in the comic book realm with a cult following. We’re excited to bring him, his art and his fans to IFC.com, a platform that recognizes and broadens the reach of up-and-coming, independent content makers,” said Craig Parks, vice president of digital media at IFC. “Shaw’s work on IFC.com will offer a fresh and completely unique take on the animation genre; the type of approach that defines our brand."
The series features an animated hero, Rebel X-6, and his quest to bring out change in the 35th century A.D.. Rebel X-6 works for an anti-droid organization that opposes the use of droids in all sectors of modern society. An artist guild that opposes the use of droids in art class hires Rebel X-6. They believe living people should model for life drawings. Rebel X-6’s assignment is to enter Art School 46 posing as “Model-Droid #343.” Model droids appear life-like but do not laugh, cry, swear or exhibit other human shortcomings. His mission is to subvert the school’s ban on drawings of real humans by tricking the students into drawing him.

–The U.S. premiere of co-production, Being Human–

Mixing the mythic with the commonplace, the farcical with the horrific and the domestic with the epic, Being Human, a BBC AMERICA co-production, is a witty and extraordinary look into the lives of three twenty-somethings and their secret double-lives – as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. Russell Tovey (Doctor Who, The History Boys), Lenora Crichlow (Sugar Rush, Doctor Who) and Aidan Turner (The Clinic) star as housemates trying to live normal lives, despite their strange and dark secrets. Being Human premieres Saturday, July 25, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

George (Russell Tovey) and Mitchell (Aidan Turner) work in anonymous drudgery as hospital porters. They lead lives of quiet desperation under the burden of a terrible secret—Mitchell’s a vampire and George a werewolf. Deciding to start life afresh and leave behind the dark side, they move into a house, only to find that Annie, the ghost of a woman killed in mysterious circumstances, haunts it. As the monster threesome deals with the challenges of their new life together, they’re united in their desire to blend in with their human neighbors.

By all appearances, George is a mild-mannered and geeky guy - except for one night a month when he’s a flesh-hungry, predatory werewolf. Mitchell is good-looking, laid-back and, unlike George, has an easy confidence with the ladies. But he’s also suffering withdrawal from the blood he craves. Annie (Lenora Crichlow) is chatty, insecure and desperate for company and now that death has separated them, she longs for her fiancé, who owns the house she haunts.

But with unwelcome intruders into their world, a threatened revolution from the vampire underworld and constant threats of exposure – on top of the day-to-day issues faced by young people – the only thing they may be able to rely on in their heightened world, is each other.

BBC AMERICA brings audiences a new generation of award-winning television featuring news with a uniquely global perspective, provocative dramas, razor-sharp comedies and life-changing makeovers. BBC AMERICA pushes the boundaries to deliver high quality, highly addictive and eminently watchable programming to viewers who demand more. BBC AMERICA is distributed by Discovery Networks. EPISODE SYNOPSES

*** SPOILER ALERT***

Episode one

As the series begins, the three friends seem to be having a somewhat normal life. Ghost Annie is buoyed by the fact she’s finally starting to be seen by ordinary people, rather than just by her housemates. Vampire Mitchell has sworn off blood, determined to kick the habit. Even the neurotic and anxious George is in relatively good spirits, putting his monthly transformation into a rampaging werewolf to the back of his mind. But it’s not long before their supernatural conditions catch up with them. The vampire world won’t leave Mitchell alone, and George, who considers the house a sanctuary from his affliction promptly tears his new home to shreds on the first full moon. Annie is heart-broken all over again when their landlord, her fiancé Owen, pays a visit and reminds her of everything that she lost by dying.

Being Human premieres Saturday, July 25, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode two

George is shocked when he meets another werewolf, Tully (Dean Lennox Kelly, Shameless). Tully is the opposite of George—he’s perfectly content being a werewolf. He wants to teach George how to enjoy himself, but George just can’t accept what he’s become and is disgusted by Tully’s attitude. Unfortunately, Tully’s invited to stay at the house by Mitchell—a failed attempt on his part to embrace the world and be more human. Of course, he soon becomes the housemate from hell.

Episode two premieres Saturday, August 1, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode three

Annie meets another ghost, Gilbert, a Smiths fan who died in the mid-1980s. He loves being a ghost, and let’s Annie know she’s stuck in limbo because there is something unresolved about her death. Meanwhile, a nurse George works with is clearly interested in being more than friends, but he does not think, considering his situation, that he should be in a relationship. But as the full moon gets closer, and George’s animalistic tendencies take hold, he becomes more impulsive—and lusty.

Episode three premieres Saturday, August 8, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode four

Mitchell’s attempts to embrace humanity become even more intense when he befriends a 12-year-old boy, Bernie, and his divorced mom, Fleur, who live in the same street. The relationship reminds him of his own childhood, and what he’s become, and helps him to stay on the wagon. But things turn sour when Bernie is shocked to see a glimpse of Mitchell’s vampire existence. It’s not long before word gets around in the neighborhood, threatening to ruin the housemates’ desire for normality and acceptance. Meanwhile, Annie is traumatized by a shocking revelation about Owen. Her despair turns to anger when she learns Owen will be visiting the house to try and sort out the growing problems with the neighbors. Through her rage she discovers some powerful and uncontrollable skills. When confronted by Owen her fury develops into a lust for revenge.

Episode four premieres Saturday, August 15, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode five

The end of Mitchell’s friendship with Bernie has pushed him back towards the vampire fold.

He learns that the vampires are starting a mass conversion—they will only feed from people who want to be vampires themselves. But the truth is much darker than Mitchell could have ever dreamed. Meanwhile, George is trying to hide his identity from his now-girlfriend, and Annie is crumbling in her attempts to avenge Owen, who still has a firm hold on her emotions.

Episode five premieres Saturday, August 22, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode six

Vampire Mitchell is in the hospital following an almost-fatal attack on his doorstep. Mitchell does not want his friends involved in the inevitable showdown with his lethal attackers, but Annie bravely decides that she cannot just stand by without doing anything. But George is faced with a huge dilemma. Should he try to help Mitchell or should he flee and try to start a normal life with his girlfriend? He has to choose between his friend and his lover. He knows Mitchell will need all the help he can get, but the lure of a normal human life is so strong.

Episode six premieres Saturday, August 29, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
IDW Announces New Star Trek® Series

Spock: Reflections

New four-issue miniseries begins in July

San Diego, CA (May 26, 2009) – Following the smash hit, Star Trek: Countdown, currently third on The New York Times Best Seller List, IDW is proud to announce its latest must-read Trek series, Spock: Reflections. The series sheds light on Spock’s life leading up to the new feature film, and offers key insights on this iconic character, as well as a startling revelation.

“The new movie offers so much new material for Star Trek fans that we knew we had to do more than just Countdown to help create as complete an experience as possible,” said Scott Dunbier, IDW’s Star Trek editor. “This series offers a candid and occasionally poignant look at Spock.”

In Spock: Reflections, writers Scott Tipton and David Tipton delve into the choices that led Spock to live on Romulus, where Countdown begins. Artist David Messina beautifully illustrates the flashbacks that shed light on Spock’s path. The four-issue miniseries will be available monthly, beginning in July.

“With a character as complex and well-known as Mr. Spock, there are the famous dramatic moments everyone remembers, and there’s still so much that lies undiscovered,” said Scott Tipton, the series’ co-writer. “In Reflections, we’re getting the opportunity here to take a look at some of the key moments between the famous moments, and really see what makes Spock’s character so – dare I say it – fascinating.”

Spock: Reflections is a licensed product of CBS Consumer Products.

Star Trek: Spock: Reflections #1 will be available in stores in July 2009.
