MASTER CLASS: ANIMATION WRITING: HOW TO WRITE SCRIPTS THAT WILL MAKE YOU A KEY MEMBER OF THE CREATIVE TEAM
Instructor: DAVID STEVEN COHEN
Monday March 28
7:00-9:00 PM
Admission $40 | $35 for MoCCA Members

Learn the skills and secrets to writing great animation. Inspire the rest of the creative team to be brilliant - and grateful to see your name on script after script!

Animation is collaboration by conveyor belt, and it starts with your script. Award-winning writer/executive producer DAVID STEVEN COHEN (Courage the Cowardly Dog, Arthur, Pee-wee's Playhouse, Steven Spielberg's Balto) will show you techniques for crafting indelible characters, solid stories and great scripts that are more than blueprints - scripts that inspire the director, storyboard artist, editor and musical director. Cohen will demonstrate how you can maximize a show's basic concept (while avoiding common mistakes) and create a script that moves visually, rhythmically, emotionally, and comedically - one that communicates vividly without collapsing under the weight of words. Underscoring it all is flexible thinking and the collaborative process: the agony and ecstasy of sharing creative vision. Focus will be on writing character-driven animated comedy for television, with some forays into features.

DAVID STEVEN COHEN was the head writer on all four seasons of Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog and has written for many other series, including Arthur, Viva Piñata and ALF Tales, of which he was co-creator and executive producer. As executive producer of Nickelodeon's The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, David was nominated for two Emmys and won a Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Children's Script. He co-wrote the animated feature Balto and has also written many songs for animation, collaborating recently with Jody Gray on the song-score for Clifford's Really Big Movie. David's live-action work includes Phil of the Future, Living Single, Strangers with Candy, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, ALF and Pee-wee's Playhouse. First introduced to opera by a certain Oscar-winning rabbit, David wrote the libretto for the opera Lilith, which premiered at Lincoln Center in 2001.

KODANSHA USA ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF SAILOR MOON

Never-before-published Enhanced Editions of the Groundbreaking Manga Series

Share Long-Awaited US Publishing Debut with CODENAME SAILOR V

NEW YORK, New York – March 18, 2011 – Kodansha USA Publishing, a subsidiary of Kodansha, announced today the exciting return of Naoko Takeuchi’s SAILOR MOON, one of the most significant names in comics and manga, to US publishing. Brand new deluxe editions of the acclaimed series will be released by Kodansha USA’s Kodansha Comics imprint in September 2011. Out of print for six years, SAILOR MOON re-launches along with Takeuchi’s two-volume prequel series CODENAME: SAILOR V, in print in the US for the first time—making this one of the most highly anticipated manga releases in years.

The SAILOR MOON manga, which originated in Japan in 1992 and debuted in the US in 1997, follows Usagi Tsukino, a young girl who transforms into super heroine Sailor Moon to combat evil and fight for love and justice in the name of the Moon and the mysterious Moon Princess. The first successful shôjo (girls’) manga release in the US, SAILOR MOON changed the book landscape and helped establish the foundation for the manga craze; in particular drawing attention to the popularity of comics among female readers.

Prequel series CODENAME: SAILOR V, the first of Takeuchi’s “magical girl” manga, will make its highly anticipated debut in the US alongside the SAILOR MOON re-launch. In CODENAME: SAILOR V, teenager Minako Aino fights as Sailor V against the villains of the Dark Agency before she discovers Sailor Moon.

The Kodansha USA editions of SAILOR MOON will be published on a bi-monthly schedule and follow the 2003 Japanese re-release format of the classic series. The original 18 volumes have been condensed into 12 volumes covering the main storyline, and two volumes dedicated to short stories. Each volume has gorgeous new cover art, retouched interior art and dialogue along with extensive bonus material from Takeuchi, and detailed translation notes.

One of the most recognized manga and anime properties in the world, SAILOR MOON took American pop culture by storm, with mentions in music (“One Week” by Barenaked Ladies), bestselling books (The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot) and more. In Japan, over 15 million copies have been sold and the series has generated everything from animated features to live action musicals, a live action television series and countless merchandise.

“I’m very excited to reintroduce Ms. Takeuchi’s work to her American fans,” said Yoshio Irie, president and CEO of Kodansha USA Publishing. Irie is also the former chief editor of Nakayosi magazine in which the SAILOR MOON manga was serialized. “As we continue to build the Kodansha Comics manga list, a title like SAILOR MOON is the jewel in our crown. As the former chief editor of the work in Japan, I’m especially thrilled to finally release the prequel, CODENAME: SAILOR V, to the many fans who have been asking for it at long last.”

In an unparalleled debut promotion, Austin Books & Comics is one of seventy-five comic retailers offering a unique cover featuring Godzilla®’s foot smashing their comic book store. Godzilla fans and comic book lovers will be able to purchase the exclusive first book ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) at Austin Books & Comics on March 30, 2011. As a special contest promotion, cover artist Matt Frank will be giving away one signed original print to a luck winner that evening.

Austin-based Matt Frank, an accomplished comic book artist and story writer whose work has been featured on numerous magazine covers, created the custom Godzilla® comic cover featuring Austin Books & Comics. Frank will be on hand at Austin Books & Comics on March 30, signing posters and comic books, and talking to fans about the new Godzilla® comic series.

Frank has done comic covers for the Ray Harryhausen present's "Back To Mysterious Island" and "It Came From Beneath the Sea Again" as well as having his one shot comic "Wrath Of the Titans: Cyclops". He also provided the monster designs for "Back to Mysterious Island" and worked on Transformers: Beast Wars guide.

We're thrilled to bring a pop culture icon as huge as Godzilla to Austin, and to host cover artist Matt Frank - even though he 'destroyed' our store!”

“This cover promotion has resulted in unprecedented support and participation by an amazing number of comic book retailers,” adds Ted Adams, CEO/Publisher at IDW. “We thought it was a fun idea when it was conceived, but thanks to so many retailers such as Austin Books & Comics being excited about having Godzilla stomp their shop, it has exceeded even our wildest expectations. Godzilla has laid waste to an amazing number of comic book stores on these covers, resulting in the biggest single press run we’ve ever done. And that just feels appropriate for Godzilla’s return.”

Bringing these fearsome creatures back to comics is a larger-than-life creative team, led by co-writers Eric Powell (The Goon) and Tracy Marsh. Artist Phil Hester (Kevin Smith’s The Green Hornet) will capture every monster moment. In addition to the retailer exclusive covers, issue #1 will also feature two painted covers offered on a 50/50 basis: Eric Powell will provide a gatefold wraparound cover featuring many beloved Toho monsters, and fan-favorite artist Alex Ross contributed an imposing image of Godzilla®. ZERO MAKES TREK ACROSS THE ATLANTIC
ZERO: JM KEN NIIMURA ILLUSTRATIONS '07-'09 Set to Make Stateside Debut with Image Comics on April 27th

Berkeley, CA – March 16, 2011 – Image Comics is proud to present a collection of whimsical, colorful illustrations by JM Ken Niimura. The esteemed artist's gestural, emotionally affective work with writer Joe Kelly on the critically acclaimed miniseries I KILL GIANTS helped ensure that book was nominated for an Eisner award in 2009, won IGN's Best Indy Book of 2008, and was listed as one of the Top 10 YA Library Association picks of 2010. Niimura's work did not start nor stop with I KILL GIANTS, though.

Prior to his collaboration with Kelly, Niimura worked on a variety of international titles, including UNDERGROUND LOVE, CLOCKWORLD, VACIO ABSOLUTO, and OSTRAS JUALAS. The Spanish-born Niimura has won more than 30 awards in recognition for his art in his home country, showcased his work in exhibitions all across Madrid, and worked on advertising campaigns for clients like Cartoon Network.

"I'm really happy to share these illustrations I did during the period I worked on I KILL GIANTS with American readers," said Niimura. "They show the other aspect of my career -- that of an illustrator, dealing more solely with composition and color, and I'm really looking forward to hearing people's reaction to the book's design!"

"Few things have made me as proud as the ongoing success of I KILL GIANTS, and the understated brilliance of Ken's artwork is undoubtably as important a component and Joe's powerful script, so it's real pleasure to further highlight Ken's skills in ZERO," added Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. "And as great as his work in I KILL GIANTS was, I guarantee there's still plenty here that will both surprise and impress Ken's growing legion of fans."

This gorgeous paperback art book with die-out cover showcases many of Niimura’s works of richly colored illustrations, which were previously published in magazines, books and advertisements between 2007 and 2009, none of which have been published in the US until now. ZERO: JM KEN NIIMURA ILLUSTRATIONS '07-'09 displays a varied retrospect of the artist's recent career that both art lovers and comic book readers can easily appreciate.

ZERO: JM KEN NIMURA ILLUSTRATIONS '07-'09 (FEB110425), a 96 page full-color art book, will be on sale in stores April 27, 2011 for $12.99.

The best thing you can do is tell your local retailer ASAP (they have to place orders before the end of March) that you want them to order you a copy. And because we're buried in the catalog, it might help to give them the book's order code, which is MAR111401.

SAVAGE BEAUTY A DARLING WITH REVIEWERS!

Moonstone Entertainment, Inc., Captain Action Enterprises, and Runemaster Studios, the forces behind Moonstone's latest comic title SAVAGE BEAUTY, have been saying for months just how spectacular this new series would be. An updating of the Jungle Girl genre tale, SAVAGE BEAUTY uses two very strong female leads to not only introduce pulp like heroics into the jungles of today's world, but also tackles real life issues. The comic is a tool of vital partnership between its creators and agencies and organizations dedicated to making life better and even saving lives in Kenya, Africa, and other ravaged lands. Moonstone, CAE, and Runemaster have been shouting the praises of SAVAGE BEAUTY and rightfully so.

And now, so are other people. The reviews are in and it seems others have jumped on the SAVAGE BEAUTY bandwagon.

Eric J., www.thepullbox.com, summed up the origins and appeal of SAVAGE BEAUTY wonderfully-

“I am a huge pulp fan, always have been. A childhood constant of mine was watching old B&W’s with my mom on Sunday afternoons. The adventure, thrill and danger of an altruistic hero risking life and limb to take down a dastardly villain was almost too much for my little 7-year heart to handle. Well, what I know (as most of you do too) is that when creative teams try to “modernize” the genre something is lost in the translation and they fail more often than they succeed. And the less-than-stellar-results are usually something off-center, overly cheesy and perhaps way dark.

Running counter to that sad norm, the folks over at Moonstone have been lighting the way for years and showing fans that pulp can still be done and done well. Savage Beauty, as a title, just continues to add to their testimony.”

In his review at www.playeraffinity.com, Dustin Cabeal points out what makes SAVAGE BEAUTY a modern and relevant title in his 'Short Version'-

“If you’re looking for a sexy jungle story about two women fighting the crimes of Africa then you’ll only be half right. This story is anything but goofy and uses the comic to look at a very realistic problem in the world, while presenting it in a very accessible way. Simply put this isn’t a kid’s comic, but it’s still really good.”

Cabeal also goes on to point out specific strong points of the debut issue-

“Mike Bullock (The Phantom: Generations) does an impressive job of taking a book with a name that seems unserious and making it anything but. With this first issue, Bullock has tackled an issue that is still a problem in Africa today....There’s a balance that’s struck between the message and the fictional world of the comic and Bullock manages to walk the line between the two.

The art is very good and maintains a “pulp” look to it which really fits the book. Artist Jose Massaroli draws a wide variety of people, animals, settings and objects and exceeds at doing all of them well.”

Ray Tate with www.comicsbulletin.com sees SAVAGE BEAUTY as...

“a welcome addition to the jungle girls category of books. The writers and artists direct their talents to raise awareness about real world vermin while creating satisfying escapism in a twist on legacy heroism.”

SAVAGE BEAUTY is a comic that appeals to the masses because it tackles real world issues and does so in an entertaining, captivating way utilizing well known staples of heroic fiction and the jungle girl genre. Christopher with www.jonja.net states-

“With roots deep in Edgar Rice Borroughs' romanticized version of Africa and his hero 'Tarzan', Savage Beauty mixes the mythos of jungle warriors with real world drama and adds in a splash of dual identities...Don't let the cover fool you, this is more than just an excuse to draw pretty girls in fur bikinis. This new spin on the jungle heroine looks like it will be a serious and at times dark journey to, at least in the literary world, bring justice to the criminals that deserve it most.”

The reviews are definitely in. SAVAGE BEAUTY AVAILABLE NOW!

THE AVENGER MEETS THE SPIDER FOR THE FIRST TIME

COURTESY OF MOONSTONE!

Moonstone Entertainment, Inc. proudly announces THE AVENGER: THE JUSTICE INC. FILES, Moonstone's latest anthology featuring all new adventures of one of the world's best known Pulp heroes!

This collection will also feature an event that for pulp fans has been a long time coming.

Moonstone excitedly announces that within the pages of THE AVENGER: THE JUSTICE INC. FILES, for the first and ONLY time anywhere, two legendary characters finally cross paths, two titans collide, two of the single greatest characters in Pulp History meet together in a hail of bullets and blood for one of the most talked about stories of the year and a Holy Grail of sorts for Pulp Fans everywhere. In this anthology, two icons bring a whole new meaning to vengeance and adventure together..for the FIRST time...

The Avenger meets the uncompromising relentless justice of The Spider!

From the story-

“By the man’s actions and glacial laughter, Benson knew that this must be The Spider, a lawless vigilante whose reputation in Manhattan was well known. And after seeing the criminal in action, he thought that reputation well-earned. The man was uncommonly swift and agile, much more so than any crook he’d ever gone against. And bullets from those .45s had sped to their targets without fail, as if on wires.”

“It was at that moment that a pounding sounded on the outside doors. It was but a second’s distraction, but when Benson looked back he saw one of The Spider’s automatics beginning to rise in his direction! With no time for thought, his finger tightened on Mike’s trigger.”

Each of these classic pulp icons brings their own history, their own techniques, and their own particular tastes for justice and vengeance to this singularly epic meeting. These aren't men who would be friends, but relentless pursuers of right, heaven help anyone who stands in their way. The Avenger....The Spider...in the same story only in THE AVENGER: JUSTICE INC. FILES from Moonstone!

MOONSTONE BRINGS MYSTERY, NOIR, AND COOL BACK

WITH ANGELTOWN COLLECTION!

Moonstone Entertainment, Inc., known for innovative books and comics starring classic as well as original characters, sets the standard once more for the Private Investigator story with its upcoming release of ANGELTOWN: THE NATE HOLLIS INVESTIGATIONS written by Gary Phillips, Interiors by Shawn Martinbrough, Cover by Michael Stribling.

Los Angeles is the birthplace of noir because the brighter the sunshine, the deeper the shadows and the more deadly the mischief that goes on in the dark.

Angeltown: The Nate Hollis Investigations is a hardcover from Moonstone reprinting the Vertigo mini series in glorious black and white -- the original critically praised sequential mystery featuring the cool, tough private eye's frenzied search in the shadows for a pro hoopster wanted for murder in "Baller."

“Anyone who has read his Monk series knows Gary Phillips can write great PI stories. Well as it turns out he is also quite adept at using the comics/ graphic novel medium as well. With Angel Town Phillips has introduced us to a new PI character, Nate Hollis, set in L.A. and ready to kick ass and take names”. --- Jon Jordan, Crimespree magazine

The brand of noir that encompasses private eye tales is all about style and gritty substance. Phillips tells a hard hitting story with rapid fire dialogue and staccato pacing. Martinbrough adds to the fist to the face this story gives the reader with both stark and subtle imagery. Between them, the original mini series set a new standard for PI Noir.

“Slick as spit, big-shouldered Hollis walks the walk and talks the talk in the Angeltown comics, taking on a star-studded scandal that could rip the roof off post-Rodney King L.A”.---

Kevin Burton Smith, Mystery Scene

Exclusive to this hardcover, Gary Phillips (Operator 5), raises the bar once more with two original illustrated prose short stories; "Hollywood Killer," wherein superhero pretenders prowling Hollywood Boulevard for tips are getting bumped off, art by Manoel Magalhães (Vincent Price Presents, Bluewater Comics) and "King Cow," about cattle, low-riders and babes with Nazi tattoos, art by Alejandro Aragon (28 Days Later, Boom Studios).

Gritty. Sordid. Dark. Hard boiled. And all cast against the canvas of the Land of Broken Dreams. Angeltown: The Nate Hollis Investigations is that and so much more and it's all coming soon from Moonstone!
