Boston Comics Roundtable Unleashes Hellbound III: Darkness Anthology of Horror Comics

BOSTON, September 24—The Boston Comics Roundtable, in partnership with River Bird Comics, is pleased to announce the publication of “Hellbound III: Darkness,” an anthology of all-new horror comics by artists and writers from greater Boston.

The Art Edition of Hellbound III: Darkness will debut on September 29 at the third annual Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE), and be available at selected comics shops in the region and online. The Art Edition, at 8.5 x 11 inches, features black and white art with a  wraparound full color cover nearly a yard long, designed by Roho and featuring art by Jerel Dye. Following this initial printing, a regular edition will be available at local comic stores, shows, and online.

The Boston Comics Roundtable’s annual Hellbound collections have won the praise of many comics critics. Roz Young at Sequential Tart called last year’s edition “a wonderful set of frighteningly fiendish stories.” Brigid Alverson at Robot 6 wrote, “The craftsmanship in this volume is impressive.” Jen Vaughn of the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont called the collection “perfect for the horror fan.” That edition, Hellbound II, was nominated for a New England Art Award in the category of best book.

Hellbound III: Darkness continues in the same horrifying tradition with eleven chilling tales that examine the darkness that lies within all of us. These gruesome narratives feature some of New England’s best artists and writers. Tak Toyoshima, creative director at Dig Publishing, offers a quick taste of zombies. Poet and “horror burlesque” impresario Janaka Stucky teams with tattoo artist Josh Wallis for a story set in a mortuary. Lindsay Moore, Donna Martinez, and Joey Peters explore the dark side of high-school overachievers. Even baseball gets the horror treatment in “America’s Pastime” by Stephen Cartisano and Ellen T. Crenshaw.

The creators work in a variety of styles. Kimball Anderson’s “No, He Can Come” uses totally black backgrounds while James the Vampire’s art may look light and airy but hides terror underneath. Jacob Oley and Gregery Miller collaborate on a nightmarish character sketch named “Vimshaw.” Alison Burke and Tara Harris of Arrocomic.com explore the woods at night. Joshua D. Hoaglund’s “Vengeance” and Adrian Rodriguez’s “Pedestrian” are both nearly wordless, with one story taking place on a whaling ship and the other in a modern city. Jon Clark’s “Void” closes out the volume with the chilling words of a love too far.

The editorial team for Hellbound III included Jerel Dye as story editor and Kyle Anderson as art editor with supplied additional illustrations by Gregery Miller and Roho. This volume was designed and produced by Uruguay born Roho, owner/publisher of River Bird Comics and creator of Hellbound.

The Art Edition of “Hellbound III: Darkness” costs $25.00 and it’s available for preorder here.

HIT CRIME DRAMA FLASHPOINT RETURNS TO ION TELEVISION
WITH ALL-NEW SEASON FIVE PREMIERING
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 11:00PM ET/PT

NEW YORK (September 26, 2012)How far can, and will, law enforcement go to keep the peace? What happens when peace doesn’t feel the same as justice?  That’s the question faced by the Strategic Response Unit (SRU) on the new and highly-anticipated fifth season of Flashpoint, the popular crime drama, premiering on ION Television on Tuesday, October 16 at 11:00 P.M. ET/PT.

The thirteen, original one-hour episodes (airing Tuesdays at 11:00 P.M. ET/PT) follow Team One, an elite police unit that specializes in high-risk critical incidents and faces their toughest challenges yet.  While trained in physical and emotional tactics to deal with extreme situations, they find themselves contemplating the very reasons they chose their paths as police officers. For Team One, the deeply personal journeys of the group pulsate through each episode, building to a powerful finale.
Flashpoint, a nail-biting cop drama, is an emotional journey into the tough, risk-filled lives of a group of police in the Strategic Response Unit. Members of a highly-skilled tactical team, they're trained in negotiating, profiling and getting inside the subject's head to understand the emotional breaking point (the "flashpoint") that triggered the crisis. The series stars an impressive list of talent, including Hugh Dillon (Durham County) as Ed Lane, team leader and lead sniper; Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) as Gregory Parker, team sergeant and head negotiator; Amy Jo Johnson (Felicity) as Julianna “Jules” Callaghan, profiler and secondary negotiator; David Paetkau (“Whistler”) as Sam Braddock, the young, hot-shot sniper; Sergio Di Zio (Just Buried) as Mike “Spike” Scarlatti, bomb tech and communications specialist; and Clé Bennett (The Line) as Rafik “Raf” Rousseau, Team One’s newest diamond-in-the-rough recruit.

Flashpoint is produced by Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment in association with CTV and ION Television. Anne Marie La Traverse and Bill Mustos serve as executive producers, and co-creators Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern helm the writing department. David Frazee is the Series Consultant.

SCIENCE IS THE NEW ROCK 'N' ROLL IN NOWHERE MEN
New Image Comics series by Stephenson and Bellegarde premieres in November

Dade Ellis, Simon Grimshaw, Emerson Strange, and Thomas Walker were the Fab Four of science, ushering in a new boom of scientific advancement as the research group World Corp. They changed the world and became the most celebrated scientists of all time, but somewhere along the way, it all went wrong.

Welcome to the new Age of Enlightenment. Welcome to NOWHERE MEN, an all-new Image Comics series by Eric Stephenson (LONG HOT SUMMER) and Nate Bellegarde (BRIT, INVINCIBLE PRESENTS: ATOM EVE & REX SPLODE), with colors by Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS) and design by Fonografiks (SAGA, THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE), debuting in November.

NOWHERE MEN marks Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson's return to the writer's chair to tell a story he's been burning to write.

"For years, I've been fascinated by the notion of a world where science shaped our culture in a similar way to popular music back in the 1960s," explained Stephenson. "We've seen hints of that world in film and television, but I've always wondered what burden being at the forefront of that kind of cultural revolution would carry. The Beatles fell apart at the end of the '60s – if science did actually supplant rock 'n' roll, how would the trailblazers of that movement fare? And if an individual like Steve Jobs could have such a profound impact on society, what would happen if a group of equally brilliant minds joined together with a common cause?"

Stephenson added: "I've been working on this for a number of years, but the timing just seemed right given that this year is Image's 20th anniversary, and Image Comics itself represented a bold shift in thinking that, in many ways, changed comics forever. It's not a coincidence that the business model established by the Image founders not only allows, but encourages someone like me to share my own creativity."

NOWHERE MEN is brought to punk-rock pop-art life by Nate Bellegarde whose meticulously detailed style previously graced Robert Kirkman's BRIT and INVINCIBLE PRESENTS: ATOM EVE & REX SPLODE.

"NOWHERE MEN gives me the chance to illustrate the gleaming, unfulfilled promise of 'yesterday's tomorrow, today,'" said Bellegarde. "I get to bring life to intricate characters and really sink my teeth into the sci-fi genre, taking the best influences from classic sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien and groundbreaking comics visions like Enki Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy, Geof Darrow's work on Hard Boiled and Frank Quitely's run on All-Star Superman to create a vivid, idyllic new world that is as much of a thrill to draw as it is to dream about."

THE WALKING DEAD creator and Image Comics partner Robert Kirkman added: "One of the things I love about Eric Stephenson is he can talk the talk and walk the walk. The best thing about being an Image partner is having a stake in a company that facilitates the creative vision of people who have unique things to say. I love that our Publisher isn't just some suit, but a creative guy whose work can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best the industry has to offer. That's what makes Image different from everybody else: We're in it because we love the creativity of comics. I can't wait to read this comic every month."

NOWHERE MEN is a full-color ongoing series making its debut on November 21. Priced at only $2.99, each issue is 32 pages and 100% advertisement-free. The first issue (SEP120393) is available for pre-order in the September issue of Previews. For anyone interested in getting a sneak peek at Stephenson's and Bellegarde's brave new world, check out the three-page teaser in the back of THE WALKING DEAD #102 (AUG128248), on sale now.

KURTIS J. WIEBE RECEIVES SHUSTER AWARD
Named "Outstanding Comic Book Writer" for work on GREEN WAKE

Image Comics and Shadowline congratulate Kurtis J. Wiebe, who was named Outstanding Comic Book Writer by the Joe Shuster Awards for his work on his series GREEN WAKE and THE INTREPIDS.

Wiebe was named the winner of the Shuster Award on September 15 in a ceremony in Montreal, Quebec. Name after Superman's co-creator, the artist Joe Shuster, the award recognizes outstanding work by Canadian comic book creators. The judges noted that Wiebe "was selected primarily for his work on the profound and affecting Green Wake."

Published by Jim Valentino's Image Comics imprint Shadowline, GREEN WAKE is a murder mystery set in a dream-like town where the residents forget their pasts and no one ever leaves. The art is by Riley Rossmo, who is also the artist on the Wiebe-penned DEBRIS and co-writer and artist on REBEL BLOOD.

"We are especially proud of Kurtis, a rising star in one of Image's and Shadowline's best years in a very long time," said Valentino. "It's great to see talent acknowledged and appreciated in this manner. Well done."

In an interview at IGN, Wiebe spoke about the very personal nature of the series, which he created while going through a divorce. "When I won the [Shuster] award for that series it made me realize that this series, despite its early end... had profoundly affected those that read it," he said. "It mattered to them. That's a huge victory to me and made it very worthwhile to struggle through the writing process which was, really, a grieving period in my life."
GREEN WAKE encompasses ten issues and is collected into two trade paperback volumes.
Wiebe is one of Image/Shadowline's most prolific creators. His other Shadowline titles include GRIM LEAPER, PETER PANZERFAUST, and DEBRIS.

“Each of Contraband’s titles are a blend of genres. With Jack Rabbit, Jim and I are mixing a heavy dose of noir with a variety of elements from horror and the supernatural to a touch of sci-fi and even a bit of a POP sensibility,” Contraband Comics founder, Jon Goff said. “The end result, we hope, is an experience that drags the reader through the muck of Jack’s life, but in an occasionally cringe-worthy, ultimately entertaining manner.”
