Pat Thomas Travels Over Land and Sea With
Listen Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power

March 16, 2012 – Seattle, WA. Fantagraphics Books and Light in the Attic Records are excited to announce that author, lecturer, and music-man Pat Thomas is hitting the road with Listen Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power. Meet the mofo behind the book that pays tribute to the Black Power Movement of the ’60s-’70s. Heading up the West Coast and then across the pond to England, Thomas will be giving talks, signing books, and playing tracks at both bookstores and record shops.

While researching this book project in Oakland, Thomas discovered rare recordings of speeches, interviews, and music by noted activists Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Elaine Brown, and others that form the framework of this definitive retrospective. Listen, Whitey! chronicles the forgotten history of Motown Records’ Black Power subsidiary label, Black Forum, which released politically charged albums by Stokely Carmichael, Langston Hughes, Bill Cosby, and Ossie Davis, among others. Obscure records produced by African-American sociopolitical organizations of the period are examined, along with the Isley Brothers, Nina Simone, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Watts Prophets, Roland Kirk, Horace Silver, Angela Davis, H. Rap Brown, Stanley Crouch, and many more. Thomas will give a slide and music presentation, and then sign copies of Listen, Whitey! and the companion CD of the same title from Seattle-based Light in the Attic Records. The album features rare tracks from African-American activists like Dick Gregory, Eldridge Cleaver, and the Last Poets, with protest music by Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Gil Scott-Heron, Roy Harper, and more.

Listen, Whitey! features nearly 200 pages of text accompanied by over 250 large sized, full-color reproductions of album covers and 45 rpm singles — most of which readers will have never seen before. The book creates a cultural context for the iconic images and the accompanying album.

Star Trek Captains Shatner and Stewart lead Phoenix Comicon Guest List
Phoenix Comicon boldly goes where it has never gone before with its largest and most diverse guest line up

Phoenix - With the presentation of the Phoenix Comicon guest list, they have “made it so” in their quest to be the signature pop culture convention of the southwest.  Star Trek Captains William Shatner (“James T. Kirk”) and Patrick Stewart (“Jean-Luc Picard”) lead the most diverse guest line up at Phoenix Comicon 2012.

Attendees will be “walking dead” after trying to meet all of the guests, including actor Jon Bernthal, from AMC’s hit TV show, “The Walking Dead”, though they will also be feeling “up” after meeting legendary actor Ed Asner, who voiced the main character in Pixar’s movie, “Up.”

If these puns and play on TV and Film names are any indication, Phoenix Comicon is giddy with excitement over the guest list they have assembled.  “Our eureka moment when our guest list solidified in our eyes came when five of the original cast members from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” confirmed their attendance,” says Convention Director Matt Solberg, “That, and we have Jaime Paglia, co-creator of the SyFy Channel series “Eureka”” he finishes with a grin.

The original cast members from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” include:
            Patrick Stewart, “Captain Jean-Luc Picard”
            LeVar Burton, “Geordi LaForge”
            Michael Dorn, “Worf”
            Marina Sirtis, “Deanna Troi”
            Brent Spiner, “Data”

While Solberg concedes that the line up is Star Trek heavy this year, he offers, “Its serendipitous for us to have Shatner and Stewart after years of pursuing them, however, there are plenty of other guests from film and tv, comic books, literature, and anime we’re beaming aboard Phoenix Comicon.”

Those guests include Film and TV actors:

Jeremy Bulloch, “Boba Fett”, Star Wars
Gigi Edgley, “Chiana”, Farscape
Erin Gray and Gil Gerard, “Colonel Wilma Deering”, “Buck Rogers” respectively, Buck Rogers.
Tony Amendola, “Jaffa Master Bra’tac”, Stargate SG-1
Casper Van Dien, “Johnny Rico”, Starship Troopers.

“Casper was a recommendation from my Krav Maga instructor,” Solberg adds, “They worked on a PSA years ago and maintained a friendship ever since.”

And that instructor from East Valley Krav Maga?  “He’ll be at Phoenix Comicon  leading “Sidekick Training” for kids”, Solberg says.   “Sidekick Training is a a workshop and demonstration in self defense and preventative skills.”

IMAGE AND TOP COW INVADE THE EMERALD CITY
Marc Silvestri provides exclusive art for Emerald City Comic Con

Top Cow Productions, Inc. and Image Comics invite you to join them from March 30th through April 1st at the 10th annual Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.

Special Guest and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri provides this year’s ECCC program guide cover, which features iconic characters from each of the current Image partners. Witchblade, Spawn, Savage Dragon, Shadowhawk and Invincible crouch atop the iconic Space Needle in an homage to the classic King Kong scene. Silvestri penciled and inked the incredibly detailed image and Sunny Gho of IFS provided the colors.

To commemorate the decade-long Seattle institution, the artwork will also be available as an Exclusive Print at the Top Cow Booth (#414), and an Exclusive T-Shirt will be available at the ECCC Booth (#514).

“ECCC is known as one of the best comic shows around and I can't wait to hang out with the fans and share the love of comics!” said Silvestri. “I was honored when asked to do the cover for the con program to help celebrate ECCC and the 20th anniversary of Image Comics, and I couldn't think of anything more appropriate than a West Coast version of King Kong! But, unlike the original chest-thumping ape, these Image monkeys aren't falling off the building!”

“Marc Silvestri is a creator that our fans have been asking about for a long time,” commented ECCC Convention Director Jim Demonakos. “To not only have him appear at the show, but for him to have created this amazing piece that celebrates both Emerald City Comicon and Image Comics, is really something special.”

A few years ago we couldn’t even hope to participate in an event like Free Comic Book Day. Andrew DelQuadro of 215 INK had this to add, “My only regret is that we didn’t start this project earlier and pull in a few more of our fellow indie publishers and make this a gigantic event. Next year We want to go bigger.”
215 INK and FUBAR PRESS are asking for a modest $1,200 in their campaign but have said,  “The more money raised, the more books will be printed and the more shops we can ship our books to.”

A CONSUMING FEAR IN SEVERED
Hardcover collection of horror series out on April 11

In 1916, twelve-year-old Jack Garron's boxcar-hopping adventure turns into a flight from a ravenous, razor-toothed man who haunts the shadows. SEVERED (FEB120457), the Image Comics series that captures all of our childhood fear, has been collected into a hardcover collection that will go on sale on April 11.

Eisner-Award-winner Scott Snyder (American Vampire) and Scott Tuft weave a tale that conjures up what they describe as "the deep fright that you have as a kid, the kind that takes your breath away, makes your spine tingle... A primal fear."

New York Times bestselling artist Attila Futaki (Percy Jackson) matches their story with art rich with historical details and subtle characterization, capturing both the hope of youth and the terror of the unknown. The hardcover collection includes pages originally in issue four of the series that have been re-inked and colored.

IGN called SEVERED "As good as horror comics get," and MTV Geek described it as "sheer terror in comic book form."
"I just read through the collected SEVERED and I'm so proud of this book," said Snyder. "I think it might read even better as a collected book than the single issues and I cant wait for our existing fans to experience it this way. I am also excited for new fans to discover SEVERED for the first time."

"We couldn't be happier with the way that the collected SEVERED has come together," added Tuft. "The bonus material looks great and we are so happy with the design of the book. Steven Finch, our designer, did a fantastic job. We're also thrilled to have an introduction from the great Jeff Lemire who has been supportive from the beginning even introducing us Scotts to Attila."

Snyder and Tuft will both be in attendance at this weekend's WonderCon in Anneheim, where Snyder will be a special guest.

SEVERED is a 200-page hardcover book for $29.99. Its ISBN is 978-1-607065-29-6, featuring a foreword by Jeff Lemire (Essex County, Sweet Tooth). It will be available in comic book stores, bookstores, and online retailers.
