“2012” GOES STRAIGHT TO NUMBER 1 ON ITUNES; MARKS DIRECTORIAL DEBUT OF FORMER ISRAELI ARMY VIDEOGRAPHER

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 15, 2009: While the year 2012 is still three years away, for Nimrod Erez, an Israeli-born filmmaker, it is very much proving to be his year.

Erez is the director of the new documentary film 2012: Science or Superstition, the first breakout online film of this new year, and his directorial debut after more than a decade working his way up from humble beginnings as a video producer while doing national service in the Israeli army. 2012 investigates the significance of the end date of the Mayan Long Count calendar on December 21, 2012.

Erez moved to New York City in 1999 at the age of 24 with the goal of directing movies and to make ends meet managed to find a minimum wage job as an engineer in a postproduction facility. While there he was “rescued” by a client that was making a TV series for Britain’s Channel 4.

The client, a scrappy upstart called The Disinformation Company, soon engaged Nimrod and put him to work on the series. The company moved the production and the tiny crew to Los Angeles in 2000 with Nimrod becoming the lead editor.

His contributions were invaluable and soon brought him high profile editing work, including Mark Hammil's directorial debut Comic Book: The Movie and numerous projects for US networks and film studios such as Universal, Disney, MTV, ABC and Fox. He eventually saved enough to form his own production company, N.E. Thing Films, and to outfit his own professional Avid edit bay.

But still, when his old employer came knocking with an offer to direct a new documentary film project, he leapt at the chance despite the compensation being a fraction of his going rate, not least because of his interest in the subject matter.

“From a very early age I was fascinated with ancient cultures and at times was sure I would grow up to be an explorer. I immediately recognized that this project would allow me to employ my skill and art in the service of one of my earliest interests,” said Erez.

Nimrod worked not only as director but also as the editor and main cinematographer. With Disinformation’s Gary Baddeley, who wrote and produced, he essentially crafted the movie solo in his home editing suite, bringing in colorists, composers and audio engineers only towards the end of the project, which lasted nine months.

The film’s focus on the key date of December 21, 2012 suggested a December 21st release, but knowing that it would be commercially impractical to try to release the film on DVD on that date in 2008, The Disinformation Company chose to do something it had never tried before by releasing the film exclusively on iTunes.

The film had screened successfully at several conferences devoted to discussing 2012, but neither Erez nor Disinformation had any way of gauging the digital download market. After a fairly quiet first few days, by January, 2009 the film was on the documentary sales chart and kept going up and up until it reached number 1.

And it didn’t stop there. Still lodged firmly in the top spot in documentaries, 2012: Science or Superstition is now also ranking as one of iTunes’ Top 10 New Releases.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my film at the top of the documentaries list,” said Erez. “And when it became one of the most popular films on ALL of iTunes, competing against the top of the box office in 2008 … great movies I went to see, that we all watched: Iron Man, WALL-E, The Dark Knight … that was a real surprise.”

Nimrod’s unlikely career from army videographer to top TV editor to indie film director seems emblematic of the proverbial American dream of many immigrants. Nimrod, however, only sees his first film as director as the beginning of the dream and is developing other scripted and non-scripted film projects while already looking forward to a second 2012 film that he plans to shoot and edit in High Definition.

For everyone interested in the sixteenth president, NBM Publishing brings back to press Rick Geary’s THE MURDER OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, volume 7 of Geary’s TREASURY OF VICTORIAN MURDER series. Geary reveals that assassin John Wilkes Booth worked with a group of Southern sympathizers out to kill not just the President but much of the executive branch. He also details the flight of the culprits and the hot pursuit of federal agents.

"Filled with rich detail and told with the tightness of a thriller. Makes for a remarkably entertaining and compact work of historical comix." -- TIME.comix

From the blog http://thebakersanimationcartoons.blogspot.com/

“One of my favorite stories, I DIE AT MIDNIGHT was originally published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in 2000. It's a romantic comedy about a man who has taken poison which will kill him by midnight. Will he find the cure in time?

This was the second book of mine to use 3d graphics, and my first to use art drawn entirely on the computer. Since the technology has advanced considerably in the last nine years since the book's debut, I've redrawn some of the pages for the new version.”

PRESS RELEASE - COMIC BOOK RESOURCES ANNOUNCES PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT YOUNGBLOOD!President Barack Obama to set up the all-new Youngblood this February!
15 January 2009 - Yesterday morning Comic Book Resources broke the news President Barack Obama will make his first major superhero-related initiative public during a six-page back-up story written and illustrated by comic superstar Rob Liefeld in February's YOUNGBLOOD #8!

"Obama re-instating the YOUNGBLOOD program with his picks is a natural, with SAVAGE DRAGON having featured Obama already," Liefeld told CBR. "And with YOUNGBLOOD having featured George H. Bush in its past as well as a Saddam Hussein styled guy and YOUNGBLOOD featured alongside Dan Quayle in WILDC.A.Ts and Bill Clinton in SUPREME, Image has a long history of involving presidential figures!"

The Liefeld penned six-page back-up story will see America's 44th President begin his term by selecting the next line-up of YOUNGBLOOD to protect the country after the team's radical changes set forth in Joe Casey and Derec Donovan's fan-favorite run. This leads into May's YOUNGBLOOD #9, in which Liefeld returns to the book full-time and President Obama comes into play as the White House comes under siege.
YOUNGBLOOD #8 (JUL082216), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in-stores February 2009.

You're going to need every tool in your utility belt for this one! Project: Rooftop is flipping on the signal. That's right, old chum, in honor of the recent (apparent!) demise of the Dark Knight in Batman R.I.P. and Final Crisis, and the likely torch-passing to follow, we're announcing a very specific new contest: redesign the Batman uniform to suit his most likely successor,Dick Grayson AKA Robin AKA Nightwing.

Think about it, Nightwing was raised to be Batman 2.0, so any uniform he dons as the Caped Crusader should demonstrate that. And sure, Nightwing might not be the next Batman, and Bruce Wayne's heroic death probably won't last forever...but let's enjoy the design opportunity anyway!

Rogues Gallery of Round Rock, TX has provided the following (awesome) prizes:

Grand Prize - The Batman Black & White Statue by Matt Wagner, a retailer exclusive DC Direct Batman action figure, Batman: The Black Glove HC, and Detective Comics #844 signed by artist Dustin Nguyen.

First Prize - Detective Comics #847 signed by Dustin Nguyen, a DC Direct Batman action figure, and Batman: Gotham Dark Knight animated deluxe 2-disc DVD or Blu-Ray (winner's choice).
Second Prize - Detective Comics #849 signed by Dustin Nguyen and the new Eaglemoss Batman Metal Figurine.

Along with our usual P:R Staff roundtable reviews, Bat-artists J.H. Williams III (Batman) and Dustin Nguyen (Detective Comics), and comics blogger Tim Callahan (When Worlds Collide at CBR ) will be joining in to guest judge the finalists!

Send in your Batman redesigns to projectrooftop@gmail.com, with the subject line: "Batman 2.0." Please include your full name, age, website, and mailing address. International winners may be responsible for shipment. All the usual P:R Guidelines apply.

All entries must be received by February 4th, 2009!

As Jedi Master and Padawan, the relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano is central to STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS – and it faces a difficult test in “Jedi Crash,” an all-new episode that premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday on Cartoon Network.

With Anakin suffering from life-threatening injuries, Ahsoka needs to find medical aid for him on an unfamiliar planet. The task leads her to a village populated by friendly but devoutly pacifistic creatures. As she implores them for help, Ahsoka finds she needs to practice the Jedi philosophy that prohibits personal attachments.

The episode not only introduces a brand-new race of characters to the Star Wars galaxy – the Lurmen – but also brings a new dimension to the bond between Anakin and Ahsoka. Their relationship is one that Ashley Eckstein, who voices the young Padawan, says she understands.

“I wanted to be just like my big brother when I was growing up, and I really was just like Ahsoka – I was such a tomboy,” Eckstein recalls. She says she recalls remembers “playing Star Wars” with her brother in their living room. Back then, she took the role of R2-D2 to her brother’s C-3PO, and Eckstein says their relationship helped her define Ahsoka’s interactions with her Jedi master.

“I was the only girl on the baseball team and proud of it,” she says. “I may not have been the best hitter or the best fielder, but I was the fastest runner, and I would outrun any boy on the field. I was close in age with my brother, and we played in the same league, but my mom insisted that we not be on the same team because she wanted that sense of competitiveness, and she wanted me to be able to flourish in my own light and not be in my brother’s shadow.”

It’s a challenge similar to the one Ahsoka faces, particularly since Anakin accepted her only begrudgingly. “Being a girl, and a younger sister, made me strive that much harder because I wanted to prove to my brother that I could hang with him and his friends. I really loved having an older brother, learning from him and kind of being his Padawan, in a sense.”

While STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS is packed with thrills and action, Eckstein is most enthusiastic about the series’ exploration of her character’s emotions and humanity. She says Anakin and Ahsoka’s relationship helps form the emotional core of the series.

“There are some really touching moments in the series between Anakin and Ahsoka, and you definitely see their relationship grow and mature,” Eckstein says. “In the beginning of the series, they’re still learning about each other. But as the battles go on and they go through all these trials and tribulations, their relationship just grows and blossoms. They learn a lot from each other.”

IDW’S G.I. JOE LAUNCHES IN JANUARY 2009
WITH THE FIRST OF THREE NEW SERIES

(San Diego, CA; January 13, 2009) – This month IDW Publishing debuts the singularly titled G.I. JOE, the first of three initial comic book series in which the elite military force G.I. JOE and COBRA are fully revitalized and re-established for a new generation of fans.

IDW set the stage with a kick-off issue, G.I. JOE #0, released in October, 2008, after it was announced that IDW had reached a deal with Hasbro to re-launch the G.I. JOE comic book franchise.

The first title IDW will release in January is G.I.JOE#1, written by Chuck Dixon and featuring art by Robert Atkins. This title follows G.I. JOE as it explores an all-new threat, a shadowy organization that was first introduced to the team in a #0 issue story. Dave Johnson (100 Bullets) will provide covers for the series, as will Robert Atkins. Cover art variations are embedded in this press release. The first issue features a special wraparound variant cover by superstar artist Gabriele Dell’Otto (Secret War).

In February, IDW launches G.I. JOE: ORIGINS #1, a series that re-envisions the G.I. JOE team for a new generation. Larry Hama’s unique blend of strong characterization and action storytelling, honed over decades of writing these characters, to effective use in looking at the formations of the G.I. JOE organization and just who the characters on the team really are. Hama will be joined on this series by artist Tom Feister (Ex Machina). Each issue will come with two regular covers, one by Andrea Di Vito and one by Feister himself.

Finally, launching in March, G.I. JOE: COBRA #1, kicks off a four-part miniseries written by Christos Gage and Mike Costa, with art by Antonio Fuso, and covers by Howard Chaykin (American Flagg) and Fuso. This series provides a unique look at the new status quo for the primary threat in the G.I. JOE universe. The series views the sinister COBRA organization from a ground-floor view as a familiar G.I. JOE team member seeks to infiltrate Cobra and learn their inner workings.

In addition to these titles, IDW will be launching comics that lead into next summer’s G.I. JOE live-action major motion picture from Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, as well as deluxe reprints of past fan-favorite tales. Details for both these projects will be released soon.

G.I. JOE #1 launches in January 2009; FC • 32 pages • $3.99

G.I. JOE: ORIGINS #1 debuts in February 2009; and G.I. JOE: COBRA #1 premieres in March 2009.

BOOM!@MELTDOWN THIS JANUARY

Will Mark Waid be ringing up your latest purchase?
Come to Meltdown on Wednesdays and find out.

BOOM! Studios Staff Works At Los Angeles Comic Shop
Every Wednesday In January
In Support Of HEXED On MySpace/Comic Books Promotion

LOS ANGELES - January 12th, 2009 - Always wanted Mark Waid to ring up your weekly comics purchase so you can pry industry gossip out of him? Well, come to Meltdown Comics and Collectibles for the remaining Wednesdays in January and you just might get your wish.

This past week, BOOM! Studios surprised the Wednesday night crowd at Meltdown Comics and Collectibles by working the floor at the Los Angeles comic shop in support of BOOM!'s recent HEXED on MySpace/Comic Books promotion.

In fact, every Wednesday for the rest of January, Meltdown's customers will find BOOM! staffers at the store - helping to sell not just HEXED but all the latest comic releases.

Last week saw the release of BOOM!'s latest comic HEXED #1 on MySpace.com/Comicbooks on the same date the comic hit store shelves. The announcement was made by E-i-C Mark Waid in a video on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw1UTwEA790

"Some of the best times I had growing up came from hanging at my LCS on new comic book day. We just thought what better way to support the release of HEXED than spending our Wednesday evenings helping out at Meltdown?" said Marketing and Sales Director Chip Mosher. "And hey, who doesn't like to get paid to hang out at comic book store?"

The first night the BOOM! team members were out in force at Meltdown, they got some nice surprises when they met regular customer Percy Carey a.k.a. rapper MF Grimm, author of DC/Vertigo's SENTENCES. Some of BOOM!'s own rising talents like Gabriel Hardman (ZOMBIE TALES #4) and Pierluigi Cothran (ZOMBIE TALES #6 and #10) also stopped by to get their weekly comics fix.

In the end, BOOM! staffers not only talked up the arrival of HEXED but also heard from fans about what keeps bringing them back every week. And hearing from fans is what makes working in comics so special.

IDW debuts Terminator Salvation Movie Prequel #1

(San Diego, January 12, 2009)

In January, IDW Publishing debuts the comic book prequel to the next Terminator movie, Terminator: Salvation. The movie is the fourth instalment in the big screen contingent of the action series, starring Christian Bale as John Connor and directed by McG. The movie opens in May 2009.

Terminator: Salvation Movie Prequel is written by Dara Naraghi (Lifelike) with art by Alan Robinson and cover by Nick Runge.

The year is 2018. With John Connor as the voice of the resistance, the scattered remnants of humanity find themselves united against their common enemy: Skynet and its Terminators. Through a patchwork system of radio transmitters, hacked satellite phones, and encrypted computer networks, resistance leader Elena Maric in Detroit, and Nigerian mining engineer Bem Aworuwa, have formed an unlikely friendship and drawn up battle plans to take the fight to the Terminators!

Like the film they tie-in to, IDW’s Terminator comics will push the timeline of the franchise past Judgment Day and into all new territory, allowing for stories and visuals previously only hinted at on film. The series will take the core concept of the Terminator films and give them a more global scope showing not just John Connor, but other humans who are either trying to survive or are actively part of the resistance. Writer Dara Naraghi says he was interested in exploring new themes—not just the action of a monumental battles, but also the game of basic survival the characters find themselves facing in such a war torn and desolate future.

“All over the world, people find themselves having to band together regardless of what their previous station in life or prejudices might have been,” Naraghi explained.

THE WAIT IS OVER! GUNNERKRIGG COURT, DEVIL’S PANTIES, MOUSE GUARD RPG IN STORES

Chicago, IL -- Jan 12, 2009 -- The long-awaited release of several key titles from Archaia is over. Tom Siddell’s GUNNERKRIGG COURT: ORIENTATION, Jennie Breeden’s THE DEVIL’S PANTIES VOL. 2, and the MOUSE GUARD ROLEPLAYING GAME hit stores Wed, Jan 7. Make sure your store got them in and spread the word.

“I am very excited for these titles to have made the shelves,” glowed Mark Smylie, Publisher of Archaia. “We’ve been lucky to work closely with our creators who always give us their best. Thanks to Tom, Jennie, David and all of their fans for their patience. But we believe the wait was worth it. The books look beautiful. And who wouldn’t want to play a mouse in an RPG?”

Mark continued: “As for our other titles…we’ll soon be releasing the rest of our publishing schedule. Archaia is coming back in a big way with new and exciting projects, as well as our critically acclaimed titles. Yes, including Artesia.”

GUNNERKRIGG COURT: ORIENTATION (Creator: Tom Siddell, ISBN: 1-932386-34-3, Diamond Order Code: FEB083463, $26.95, 296-page hardcover, all ages). Antimony Carver is a precocious and preternaturally self-possessed girl starting her first year at gloomy Gunnerkrigg Court, a very British boarding school that has robots running around alongside body-snatching demons, forest gods, and the odd mythical creature. The opening volume in the series follows Antimony through her orientation year: the people she meets, the strange things that happen, and the things she causes to happen as she and her new friend, Kat, unravel the mysteries of the Court and deal with the everyday adventures of growing up.

THE DEVIL’S PANTIES, VOLUME 2 (Creator: Jennie Breeden, ISBN: 1-932386-36-X, Diamond Order Code: FEB083471, $19.95, 296-page hardcover, black-and-white, Mature Readers). Follow Jen as she goes kilt hunting at conventions with her leaf blower and discovers sparkly butterfly toys that no child should play with. When her boyfriend has LAN parties in their garage, she hits the clubs.

Jedi General Aayla Secura makes her series debut in “Jedi Crash,” an all-new episode of the animated hit STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS that premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, Jan. 16, on Cartoon Network.

When Anakin is gravely injured in battle, General Secura must teach Ahsoka the Jedi philosophy of having no personal attachments, even as they brave an unfamiliar planet in search of medical help for their stricken leader.

A Twi’lek Jedi Knight, Aayla Secura first appeared in Dark Horse Comics’ “Star Wars: Republic” series, and most famously made brief but memorable appearances in both Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. But before this episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, she never had a speaking role.

“This was our opportunity to really find out what she was like,” says supervising director Dave Filoni. “When we were developing her, the original concept for her voice was street tough and recognizably American. Then we hit on the idea of giving her more of a French accent, and that really helped us define her personality. Jennifer Hale does a great job voicing Aayla, adding new dimensions to the character and making her into something like a tough, older sister to Ahsoka.”

He says Secura understands Ahsoka’s difficult position, but also wants Anakin’s Padawan to recognize the importance of the Jedi philosophy toward personal attachments. “She realizes Ahsoka cares for Anakin, but she takes an approach that’s almost like, ‘I don’t have time for these emotions, kid.’

“Jedi have a range of personalities and attitudes, and she’s very different from Kit Fisto and Anakin Skywalker. That’s such a huge aspect of this series,” Filoni says. “We are able to fully realize these characters as walking, talking individuals with great and different personalities, to show the entire galaxy of Jedi.”

January 12, 2009 - Studio 407 is excited to launch the first issue of "Netherworld" on March 25th. Jones says "I've been writing genre for as long as I can remember. So, I was kicking around a novel idea and was trying to describe the creature concept in the story to a friend and made the off-hand comment, "well it's not like they're alien zombies or anything..." Jones continues "And I stopped. And I thought, hmm.... that would be kind of awesome. Alien zombies. Hell, I gotta write that! And suddenly, Netherworld became my obsession. Everything else that I had been writing, planning to write or thinking about writing, got put to the side and I started hammering the keyboard like a mad person. As part of its continuing series to feature influential and iconic women, Bluewater Productions unveiled the next subject for it Female Force comic series: Caroline Kennedy. Written by Neal Bailey and drawn by Ryan Howe this one-shot will be in stores in June.

Zenescope teams with Pat Croce

Best-selling author, motivational speaker and former Philadelphia 76ers President, Pat Croce, will be co-publishing a pirate-themed comic book series with Zenescope Entertainment entitled NO QUARTER. Croce is an expert in pirate history and in 2005 founded THE PIRATE SOUL museum in Key West , Florida . Zenescope Entertainment, a Philadelphia based comic book and graphic novel publisher known mostly for its dark and edgy brand, was also founded in 2005 by Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco.

NO QUARTER is a “hardcore and gritty pirate series unlike anything seen before.” says Zenescope VP Ralph Tedesco. The story follows Charlie Drake, a young man who finds that his bloodline is anything but ordinary then sets out to find a new life and in the process becomes a legend.

A preview issue of NO QUARTER written by Croce (Pirate Soul, I Feel Great and You Will Too!) and Adam Slutsky with artwork by Mark Sparacio (Jonah Hex) and cover by Joe Benitez (The Darkness, Wraithborn) will debut at New York Comic Con February 6th, 2009. The twelve issue series will be released in May 2009 and will also feature the “Party Like A Pirate” contest in which entrants will have a chance to win a trip to Key West , Florida .
