LEGENDARY DIRECTOR HAYAO MIYAZAKI WITH THE ART OF CASTLE IN THE SKY

Coinciding With The Film’s 30th Anniversary, New Hardcover Release Joins The Studio Ghibli Art Book Collection And Features A Stunning Array Of Illustrations, Character Artwork And Insights From The Pioneering Creator

San Francisco, CA, September 8, 2016 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, presents a special new offering to fans of the work of famed anime visionary Hayao Miyazaki with the release of THE ART OF CASTLE IN THE SKY on October 18th.

This beautiful hardcover edition joins VIZ Media’s highly commended series of art books showcasing Studio Ghibli films. THE ART OF CASTLE IN THE SKY’s debut also coincides with the 30th Anniversary of the original release of the film. THE ART OF CASTLE IN THE SKY will carry an MSRP of $34.99 U.S. / $39.99 CAN.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky was the first feature film produced by the legendary Studio Ghibli. Sheeta, a girl who has the power to defy gravity, is on the run from pirates when she meets the young inventor Pazu. Together they explore the secrets of Laputa, a flying city constructed by a long-lost race of people. All of Miyazaki’s major themes – the power of flight, the bravery of young women, and a world wrecked by change – are captured with beautiful animation and joyous storytelling.

“We are proud to release this gorgeously illustrated book that celebrates the extraordinary artwork of Hayao Miyazaki’s groundbreaking film,” says Masumi Washington, Senior Editorial Director. “This comprehensive edition is packed with the film’s art, from conception to final release, as well as commentary and insights from Miyazaki himself. It makes a fitting addition to our extensive Studio Ghibli library.”

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. His first feature, The Castle of Cagliostro, was released in 1979 and his critically acclaimed film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which was based on his own manga, was released in 1984. In 1985, Miyazaki cofounded Studio Ghibli, through which he directed the box office smashes Princess Mononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001), which won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. Howl's Moving Castle (2004) received the Osella Award for technical achievement at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. In 2005, VIFF awarded Miyazaki the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Miyazaki’s other acclaimed films include My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and Ponyo. Miyazaki's essays, interviews and memoirs have been collected in STARTING POINT: 1979–1996 and TURNING POINT: 1997–2008. His final film, The Wind Rises, was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award®. In November 2014, Miyazaki received an honorary Academy Award® at the academy's sixth annual Governor's Awards.

First Look!
Caliber’s new Lovecraft and Sherlock Holmes graphic novels!

Coming in November, Caliber Comics will be releasing two graphic novels tapping into two of literature’s most esteemed subjects, H.P. Lovecraft and Sherlock Holmes.  The books are currently in Diamond Previews (September) for ordering and are expected to be released at the beginning of November.

In Mythos: Lovecraft's Worlds, writer Brandon Barrows and artist Hugo Petrus (Wolverine, Marvel Illustrated, Grayson) adapt eight of Lovecraft's stories to the comic format, many of them lesser-known and some never before adapted to comics, such as The Curse of Yig and Ibid, a rare humor story!

Though Lovecraft is known as the father of modern horror for his tales of terror, cosmic abominations and of course, his dreaded Cthulhu, he also penned stories of fantasy, science fiction and even humor.

Mythos writer, Brandon Barrows said "Lovecraft has been an important influence on my horror and fantasy writing, but 'Cthulhu' is all most people seem to know about him. With Mythos, I want to shine a light on some of the more obscure pieces of his work and hopefully show folks that it's worth exploring beyond the evil gods and tentacles.”

With the eight stories in this volume, Barrows and Petrus go beyond tentacles and evil gods to explore the corners the mythos and the myriad worlds of Lovecraft!  Mythos is a 100 page black and white graphic novel retailing for $12.99.  Diamond Item Code SEP161503

In Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Detective, writer Christopher Sequeira (X-Men, Iron Man) is joined by artists Philip Cornell and J. Scherpenhuizen to present all new tales of the great detective.  The brilliant Holmes is plunged into a case of Gothic terror as he investigates horrific deaths that suggest an improbable monster.  Only Holmes can stop the shadows from swallowing London and only his single remaining friend can stop the shadows from swallowing him.

Leslie S. Klinger, editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes and  The Annotated Sandman says about the graphic novel, “Sherlock Holmes has long been featured in comic books, but few have the wit, literary style, and attention to detail found on every page of the Dark Detective! Every fan of Sherlock Holmes—whether a comic-book reader or not—will be enthralled by this brilliant series!”

Sequeira stated that in writing the story, that he wanted to stay immersed in the world of Sherlock Holmes although other aspects of Victorian horror are pulled in.  The Holmes fan site, Doyleockains, testifies of Sequeira’s writing success in their review, “…heartily recommend this series that can be described as Holmes meets Hammer Horror.”

The full color graphic novel of 120 pages retails for $19.99 and is available to order via Diamond Previews (September for November release), item # SEP161506.

IDW Publishing Nets Four Harvey Awards
March: Book Two continues its winning streak at Baltimore Comic-Con 2016

San Diego, CA (September 7, 2016) – Comic pros assembled on Saturday night to honor their peers at the 2016 Harvey Awards, the only industry award both nominated and selected by comic professionals. IDW Publishing is proud to announce four Harvey Award wins that evening.

On the heels of its recent Eisner Award win, March: Book Two, from IDW’s Top Shelf Productions imprint, was recognized in two categories with Harvey Awards for Best Biographical, Historical, or Journalistic Presentation and Best Graphic Album - Original. The March trilogy is both a critical and commercial success, having held the top three positions on the New York Times Bestsellers List continuously for the past four weeks. The trilogy of books is Congressman John Lewis’ autobiographical account of the civil rights movement. He shares these wins with co-writer Andrew Aydin and artist Nate Powell.

In addition, Corto Maltese: Beyond the Windy Isles tied for Best American Edition of Foreign Material, edited by Dean Mullaney for IDW’s Library of American Comics. It is the second volume in the definitive English-language edition of Hugo Pratt’s masterpiece.

John Workman was awarded Best Letterer for his work on Ragnarök. Writer/artist Walter Simonson was there to present the award to his collaborator on stage.

IDW congratulates all the other winners at this year’s ceremony, most especially Berkeley Breathed. His comic strip Bloom County, recently resurrected after a 25-year hiatus, received the award for Best Syndicated Strip or Panel and will be published by IDW later this month in the new book Bloom County Episode XI: A New Hope.

IDW would like to thank everyone who nominated and voted for these recipients. Your support and recognition is an honor and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
