IDW PUBLISHING RELEASES SPECIAL SILVER STAMPED EDITION OF BARACK OBAMA
POLITICAL COMIC BIO
FIRST EDITION SELLS OUT!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(San Diego, CA; November 20, 2008) --
Due to unprecedented demand, IDW Publishing (www.idwpublishing.com) has published a special edition of its best-selling political comic biography PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL: BARACK OBAMA (Author: Jeff Mariotte/Artist: Tom Morgan).
The book, which quickly sold out during its initial print run in October this year - will be in comic book stores December 3, 2008 and can also be pre-ordered on www.presidentialcomics.com. The new edition features a silver President Elect foil-stamped seal on the cover.
“The demand for the Obama book has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. Despite aggressively overprinting, it is now sold out and we are going back to press. This has been an incredibly exciting roll of the dice for us, and we’re delighted the book has captured the public's imagination," said Scott Dunbier, IDW’s Special Projects editor.
This compelling biography (together with its companion comic, Presidential Material: John McCain) received glowing reviews from the Los Angeles Times and USA Today, amongst others.
From the LA Times: (The Obama, McCain comics) “deliver savvy and nimble life stories for both candidates and mostly succeed in stripping away overt partisan spin, be it home-team puffery or us-versus-them venom. The books, while short (or maybe because they are short), are fairly ideal introductions to each candidate, especially for teen readers.
Obama’s life story begins with his childhood and young adult years, communicating his struggles as a youngster of mixed-race heritage growing up with a single mom. The intellectual zeal that made Obama the first African American president of Harvard Law Review is a strong undercurrent but, like the McCain story, the compromises, detours and stumbles are left in; we see an aimless, teenage Obama scoffing at the idea of college and then later, after he was shellacked in an expensive 2000 campaign, there's the scene of him getting his credit card denied while trying to buy a plane ticket to the Democratic National Convention.”
Limited supplies of Presidential Material: John McCain and the FLIPBOOK (which present both candidates stories) are still available from www.presidentialcomics.com. To find your local comic book store, call 1800-comicbook.
Presidential Material: Barack Obama, 32 pages, DIAMOND ITEM CODE: OCT088029, $3.99

PRESS RELEASE - KELLY YATES' AMBER ATOMS LANDS AT IMAGE THIS FEBRUARY!Illustrator Kelly Yates brings his sci-fi vision to Image!
20 November 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - This February, after exploring the worlds of TELLOS, DOCTOR WHO, GREEN ARROW and JLA/JSA, artist Kelly Yates kicks off his very own ongoing sci-fi adventure series, AMBER ATOMS!
"AMBER ATOMS comes from a deep rooted love of space faring sci-fi adventures, like STAR WARS and its own inspiration, the 1930s Flash Gordon serials," said Yates. "Each issue fires off at as fast a clip as possible, with cliffhangers at every turn while still maintaining my favorite part of the book - Amber herself. A good sci-fi story is held together by the human perspective and Amber's certainly the series' heart."
AMBER ATOMS' life on planet Madisomme is far from the exciting one she always dreamed of. Yet when mercenaries and aliens suddenly invade Amber’s home she quickly learns her dreams may give her more than she bargained for, especially when a family secret could doom an entire galaxy. Yates' unique take on the sci-fi world has already caught the attention of many of the industry's own, including SAVAGE DRAGON creator and Image Founder Erik Larsen.
Larsen commented, "AMBER ATOMS represents an artist finally pursuing his passions after a long time spent in other people's sandboxes. I couldn't be more impressed by what Kelly's accomplishing here and look forward to reading AMBER ATOMS for years to come."
AMBER ATOMS #1, a 32-page full color comic book for $3.50, will be in stores February 18th.

Historical Action and Intrigue in A Murder of Scarecrows
Original graphic novel set in Pre-Revolution America
From the dark mist of Raven Cove, the mysterious figure of the Scarecrow owns the night as he terrorizes the British soldiers who reign with a tight fist on a small seaport village. Set in the dramatic days before the American Revolution, a masked avenger seeks to maintain justice in the small seaport town of Seaton. As the British seek to clamp down on the smugglers, only The Scarecrow and his Freedom Riders can stand for the townspeople against the tyranny of the new commandant of the town...one who threatens to destroy the entire population in order to catch the Scarecrow!
Written by Gary Reed, known for his historical forays with a supernatural twist in Saint Germaine plus the acclaimed look at the assassination of JFK in Red Diaries, and illustrated by noted historical artist, Wayne Reid. Gary and Wayne have teamed up before on historical projects from Tome Press including ZuluNation and the story of El Cid. Reed has also written historical works from Jeremiah Johnson to Jack the Ripper.
"I really was glad when Wayne came on board," said Reed. "He's a classic type artist who some might call old school, but his style fits this project perfectly. I wanted that older sensibility to this graphic novel."
The saga of a seaport town suppressed by the British have their hopes in the rebellious and mysterious figure known only as the Scarecrow. When Colonel Dreymore is brought in to eliminate the Scarecrow and his men, the violence escalates into a prelude of war.
Reed explained the naming of the first graphic novel. "The collective term for crows is a murder of crows so I thought it was fitting to apply it to the Scarecrows as well."
Why the Scarecrow motif? "Many early American writers played with the idea of Scarecrows such as Nathaniel Hawthorn and of course, Percy MacKaye's "The Scarecrow", and I thought that it made an interesting dynamic.
The graphic novel, coming from Desperado Publishing in January of 2009, will run 64 pages and the story is the first in a planned series covering the life and times of the Scarecrow.

It's Jar Jar Binks to the Rescue
in This Week's STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS
When Separatist forces mistake Jar Jar Binks for a Jedi Knight, humor and action come together in a new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. Bombad Jedi premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, Nov. 21, on Cartoon Network.
Jar Jar Binks and C-3PO team up to save Padmé Amidala from doom at the hands of evil Viceroy Nute Gunray. But the task becomes infinitely more complicated when the Separatists assume that the Gungan is a Jedi.
Director Jesse Yeh says Jar Jars overstated mannerisms and physicality make him a natural for THE CLONE WARS animated format.
Jar Jars looks, expressions and his characteristic personality allow us to animate him to levels of exaggeration that really stand out from the other human characters or two-legged creatures, Yeh says.
To me, his character is almost right out of the classic Disney or Warner Bros. cartoons. He is not always completely there, he is clumsy and he seems to have a talent for making mistakes that really matter sometimes in a constructive way, sometimes in a destructive way. I think its easy to be attracted by his innocent, childlike, naive side. Hes like a loveable, well-meaning friend one you dont want around when its a matter of life and death. But once youve lived through the crisis, you definitely want to invite him to the celebration party.
Yeh directs action and comedy with equal skill, but he says its easier to find inspiration for the latter in his daily activities.
If you pay more attention to the people around you, you will realize theres a funny side to everyone no matter who that person normally appears to be, Yeh says. I actually did put in a lot of everyday gags into the episode, and some of the reactions Jar Jar has were actual reflections of people whom I know in real life. But I am not telling who they are, of course.
Writer Kevin Rubio (creator of Dark Horses Tag & Bink) says he had fun crafting the first episode of the series that is driven by humor, and feels Jar Jar was the perfect character to anchor the episode.
I wanted to find a middle ground between the funny side of Jar Jar and heroic redemption, Rubio says. He is a fish out of water, and, yeah, he can be goofy and stupid, but in context, it works.
Theres a phrase that I think applies to almost every episode that Ive seen, and I know it influenced me on this episode. It appears in the prologue to the original Star Wars novelization: They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally they became heroes. I think that says it all for Jar Jar.

Next Stop Memorabilia What the heck? We're back in Birmingham! 17 November 2008 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Read on for:-- Zeroes is dead. Long live the Evil Eyebrow!-- Comic Village Review
Hey, folks!
It seems like only last month that we were headed to the Birmingham International Comics Show, trying to navigate our way through the maze of streets round the strangely secluded Millenium Point building. Wait a minute - it was only last month! So what the hellfire are we doing back in Brum so soon? I guess we just love the culture, the hospitality, and all those scantily-clad Broad Street gals p*ssed up on WKD and Bacardi Breezers. But let's face it, the NEC itself is a veritable palace. Who couldn't resist the allure of Z list celebs in a large frozen warehouse? Damn it, that was the old Memorabilia show, fools! The new Memorabilia is run by the same bunch who put on the MCM show, so guess what? This time the NEC will rock to the beat of pure awesomeness! And guess what else? Kenny freakin' Baker is gonna be there! R2D2 himself! Yes, that reclusive thespian has emerged from his doll's house to grace the sacred halls of the NEC. This is like a mega exclusive - you won't see this guy at any other show, especially if you're looking straight ahead.
So come on down and, well, you know the drill - say hello, shoot the breeze, do a little dance, that kind of thing.
Memorabilia: 22-23 November
Zeroes is dead. Long live the Evil Eyebrow! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Finally, the end has come for Zeroes. But we're back this week with a certain character who regular Zeroes readers will be familiar with. It's small, it's furry and you'd better keep it well away from your face.
Read on for... Tales of the Evil Eyebrow!
Comic Village Review ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, that nice Mr Carter has gone and done a little review of our Zeroes story arc. He says some nice things. He also suggests that the story was a little short, so what we wanna know is this:
How long should our web comic stories be?
Zeroes was only 14 pages, but that's 14 weeks, and we kinda figured that any longer would try your patience - especially if you're not a big Heroes fan. So, get in touch, people! Reply to this email and give us some feedback. Do ya want 5 pages per story or 50 pages, given that you're only getting one page per week? Tell us what ya think and we may actually listen! Seriously, we're doing this for you guys, so make yourselves heard.
Thanks for the review, Glenn - keep up the good work over at the Comics Village.
Ok, peeps, that's it for this month, but we'll be back before you know it.
Don't be a stranger!
