ZERO'S FIRST MISSION IS A SUCCESSFUL SELL-OUT
Politically-charged spy tale sells out on first week of release

ZERO #1, a brand new debut from writer Ales Kot with artist Michael Walsh, has officially sold out at the distributor level after its first day of release. In ZERO #1, Kot and Walsh introduce us to Edward Zero, an extraordinarily efficient soldier trained from youth to do exactly as he is told, no matter how brutal or untoward the act. Each issue will feature a new artist and mission for Zero to complete, with the end goal being a demonstration of how Zero's life changes as a result of his deadly work.

"Zero #1 partners Kot with artist Michael Walsh for a story set in the Gaza Strip in 2018, and it’s not only a phenomenal start to the series, but the strongest work of both creators’ careers."
- Oliver Sava, Onion A.V. Club

"Ales Kot has given us an intriguing story that takes the spy genre to a new level. Michael Walsh's art rips into the action and you'll need to hang onto your seat to make sure you don't fall over while reading. Jordie Bellaire's colors highly complement Walsh's art as each panel has the right focus on attention. The fact that the next issue will focus on another mission makes it all the more compelling to want to come back to find out what's next."
- Tony Guerrero, Comic Vine

"From Ales Kot’s extremely tight scripting to Michael Walsh’s gorgeous, atmosphere-infused artwork, this is a book that a lot of people have been waiting for and it does not disappoint."
- David Henderson, Multiversity Comics

ZERO #1 may still be available at comic stores, and is also available digitally on the Image website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well as on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, and Android. ZERO #2 is in stores on 10/16 and can be pre-ordered now (Diamond Code AUG130721).

THE BOUNCE SPRINGS IT’S WAY TO ANOTHER SELL OUT
Who Says Slacker Heroes Can’t Succeed?

THE BOUNCE #5, written by Joe Casey and drawn by David Messina, has sold out at the distributor level. THE BOUNCE stars Jasper Jenkins, just your average, twenty-something guy who gained his powers though surreal circumstances. When he's not hanging out and doing a lot of nothing, he puts on a costume and hits the streets as the Bounce, a superhero in a world that's not used to super-powered heroes and villains. Jenkins may be a slacker superhero, but THE BOUNCE is loaded with depth, as Casey and Messina explore what would make a person put on a costume and fight crime, the pressures of modern identity politics, and even some good old-fashioned superheroic action.

"I'm feelin' all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that we've got a dedicated readership out there who seem to be as invested in buying this series as we are in creating it every month," says Casey. "And the surrealism of this thing is just getting started. There's still plenty of secrets yet to be revealed."

The comics press has been enjoying the nuanced approach Casey and Messina employ in THE BOUNCE:

"Joe Casey pens the script and from the first page to the final panel he sets out to challenge his audience. By using a confrontation that results in an overreaction then a fatality he lifts a magnifying glass over the strengths and fears of Jasper Jenkins.  It’s hard not to relate to the story, as crazy as it is, because the scribe does an amazing job delivering organic dialogue that feels innately human."
Harrison Rawdin, Unleash the Fanboy

"But overall, this where much of the brilliance and enjoyment of The Bounce comes from–its ability to mix the two worlds of superheroics and social commentary so well, a microcosm of the larger scale issues that it addresses in its pages. In many instances, it demands second–and even third–readings to appreciate its nuances... the Bounce is indeed like Spider-Man for a new generation, only with a far more nuanced social conscience and understanding of the complexities of wanting–but not being able–to just be who you are at all times without fear of reprisal."
Matt LeMaire, The MacGuffin

THE BOUNCE #5 may still be available in your local comic store and is available digitally on the Image Website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, and Android.

THE BOUNCE #6 releases 10/23 and can be pre-ordered now (Diamond Code AUG130687).

THE SAVIORS UNITE TO UNCOVER ALIEN INFILTRATION
James Robinson returns to creator-owned comics with a tale of sci-fi horror
In THE SAVIORS, debuting in December from Image Comics, writer James Robinson (Earth 2, Starman, The Shade) and artist J. Bone (The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror, The Spirit) introduce us to Tomas Ramirez. He has a nice job at a gas station, the cops don't give him any trouble, and the weather's nice. Life is easy, and Tomas likes easy. But when he stumbles upon an extraterrestrial conspiracy to take over the world, his life becomes anything but easy. He's thrown into a fight for the future of the Earth against an unstoppable threat, and his only hope is to find allies before it's too late.

A story that starts small before ballooning into a worldwide conspiracy, THE SAVIORS is Robinson's return to creator-owned comics after several years away, and he's ecstatic at the freedom and storytelling possibilities that comes with owning your work.

"It's great to be doing a series where anything goes. Where a character can seem the main focus for several issues only to die suddenly,” said Robinson. “Where an arc can end and another begin in a different part of the world with a different cast and focus. Where an up-coming arc might even focus on the aliens' perspective. To be able to do something with so very few rules is very liberating and a lot of fun."

J. Bone is similarly excited for THE SAVIORS: "I'd always wanted to draw a horror/monster book in my cartoon style, but told as a straight up scary story. After some long phone calls and email exchanges, James came back with a terrific Monster in the Desert story that just hit me right in the nostalgia. I love old black-and-white horror movies—guys in rubber suits, teens racing through the desert on dune buggies and convertibles. The old sheriff called in because someone's killing all farmer Jones's cattle. That's the kind of story James wrote except with quite a few modern twists."

THE SAVIORS throws ordinary people into extraordinary situations, pits them against unkillable lizard monsters, and does it all with the aid of a fun, cartoony art style from Bone and crisp dialogue from Robinson.

THE SAVIORS #1 can be pre-ordered now from the October issue of Previews (Diamond Code OCT130447) and will be in stores on December 26. THE SAVIORS will be the only title shipping from Image Comics on the week of the Christmas holiday.

GHOSTED PULLS A HAT TRICK WITH THIRD STRAIGHT SELL-OUT
Hit new ongoing supernatural heist comic series goes back to press

GHOSTED #3, written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Goran Sudzuka, has sold out at the distributor level. This is the third straight sell-out for this hit new series and GHOSTED #3 will be reprinted to meet demand in October.

Williamson and Sudzuka have clearly struck gold with their supernatural heist comic, in which a team of thieves are tasked with stealing a ghost from a haunted mansion. Since debuting from Image Comics imprint Skybound in July, GHOSTED has seen massive sell-outs and rave reviews:

"This is by far Sudzuka’s best artwork to date. He’s the kind of guy you dream about drawing your comic because he gets every last panel right."
- Joshua Yehl, IGN

"Ghosted is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. It's a fantastic concept that has really been delivering the past few months. Writer Joshua Williamson has a great book here, and with the combine creative talents of Goran and Miroslav, this is a book that everyone should be reading. It's different, in the best way possible. Overall, I highly recommend this book and this series."
- Mat Elfring, ComicVine

"Williamson and Sudzuka’s Ghosted succeeds by taking a couple of very familiar (and pretty in vogue) genres and mixing them up. There’s a little bit of horror, a little bit of Hoax Hunters paranormal procedural structure going on, and a whole lot of heist movie flair to tie it all together. With a balanced cast of characters and a pacing that never stays in one place for too long, Ghosted freshens up a bunch of things that we’ve seen in plenty of comics before."
-  Vince Otrowski, Multiversity

The second printing of GHOSTED #3 can be pre-ordered now (Diamond Code AUG138198)
and will be in stores on 10/16. GHOSTED #4 arrives in stores on 10/9.

The Golden Age Superman At IDW!
Library Of American Comics Collects The Man Of Steel’s Sunday Strips

San Diego, CA (September 17, 2013) – Continuing to set the gold standard in comics preservation, IDW Publishing’s Library of American Comics, in partnership with DC Entertainment, will release the amazing never-before reprinted adventures of Superman that appeared in the Sunday newspapers for more than twenty-five years. The strips will be releases in in chronological order in three sub-sets: the 1940s Golden Age, the 1950s Atomic Age, and the 1960s Silver Age.

The first volume in the Superman: Golden Age Sundays series will collect 170 sequential Sundays, from May 9, 1943 through August 4, 1946, beginning where the Superman Sunday Classic book by DC Comics and Kitchen Sink Press left off. These World War II-era stories feature work by legendary artists such as Wayne Boring and Jack Burnley.

“We’re printing the series in an oversized 9.25” x 12” format,” says editor Dean Mullaney, “so that readers can fully enjoy these glorious full-color tabloid Sundays.”

The stories include the complete “Superman’s Service to Servicemen” series, which ran from late Summer of 1943 until a few months after the Second World War ended. In these human interest tales, Superman responds to requests from men and women of the armed services, as well as their family members back home. In supporting troop morale, Superman travels from the Mediterranean theatre to the bleak Aleutian Islands to the steamy South Pacific. He helps a wounded Army Air Corps pilot return home to witness the birth of his twins; solves numerous romantic misunderstandings; checks up on mothers for their worried sons overseas…while simultaneously stopping enemy torpedoes, bombs, and bullets!

In a clever transition to the post-War world, there’s a flashback to Superman’s origin and Clark Kent’s first assignment at the Daily Planet, followed by a thrilling inter-stellar saga in which Superman comes face to face with Queen Arda of the planet Suprania, who threatened to kill Lois Lane unless the Man of Steel agrees to become her King!

These Sunday strips represent an important era in the development of the Man of Steel into an international phenomenon. Each book in the series features an introduction by Mark Waid and covers drawn by Peter Poplaski.

Superman: Golden Age Sundays joins The Library of American Comics and IDW’s line of archival DC classic newspaper strips, first started with Superman: Silver Age Dailies, which will continue into 2014, as well as the 1940s Wonder Woman and the 1960s Batman.

Established in 2007 by Dean Mullaney, the Library of American Comics has become an authority on comic strip preservation and restoration. Their multi-Eisner and Harvey Award-winning collections present archival material accompanied by enriching information that frames the selected strips against the backdrop of history and culture.

BRUBAKER AND EPTING TEAM UP ON VELVET,
A DARK TWIST ON THE SPY GENRE
Ongoing Image Comics series starts in October

Revealed at July’s Image Expo, the media event that prepared the comics market for what’s next from the largest American independent comics publisher, VELVET is a dark and provocative new espionage thriller from Ed Brubaker(FATALE) and Steve Epting. The first creator-owned project from the team who brought you Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the ongoing Image Comics series VELVET will debut in October.

Velvet Templeton is supposed to be just a secretary, the personal assistant to the Director of a top secret Intelligence Agency, but when the world's greatest spy is killed, she quickly finds herself caught in a web of mystery and murder, as her own secret past comes to light.

“The thing I'm most excited about with Velvet is, she's a woman with this incredibly dangerous history who’s been living a quiet life for a long time, and her current life and who she used to be are about to collide in a very explosive way," said Brubaker. "So she’s going to have to face a lot of things she’s been hiding from, and do things she barely remembers how to, and hope she’s still as good as she used to be."

Steve Epting’s art on VELVET—dark and sexy, with painterly colors by Elizabeth Breitweiser—is partly influenced by the covers of '60s and '70s spy novels.

“I'm a huge fan of the illustration art from that era and it was actually a big influence on my approach to the covers for Captain America. I'm hoping to bring even more of that sensibility to Velvet—especially considering the time in which the story is set,” said Epting.

Brubaker has also spoken about VELVET to Comic Book Resources and MTV Geek.

VELVET #1 can be pre-ordered now from the August issue of Previews (Diamond code AUG130505) and will be in stores on October 23.

GENE LUEN YANG’S BOXERS & SAINTS MAKES THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD LONGLIST

The National Book Awards announced their Longlist in the category of Young People’s Literature this morning, including Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel diptych about the Boxer Rebellion, Boxers & Saints.

Boxers & Saints is the only graphic novel to make the list.  This follows Yang’s American Born Chinese, the first graphic novel ever to be a finalist for the National Book Awards.

Boxers & Saints has received critical praise from across the industry: “Read this, and come away shaking,” says Newbery Honor-winning author Gary Schmidt, while Dave Eggers calls the book “masterful.”  The Guardian says it is “remarkable,” while The LA Times calls it “at once humorous and heartbreaking” and The Washington Post describes it as “epic.”

Boxers & Saints is one of the most ambitious graphic novels First Second has ever published. It offers a penetrating insight into not only one of the most controversial episodes of modern Chinese history, but into the very core of our human nature, tackling the difficult subjects of nationalism, faith, and coming-of-age. Gene Luen Yang is rightly called a master of the comics form, and he brings all his formidable talents to bear in this astonishing new work.

In two volumes, Boxers & Saints tells two parallel stories. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. Little Bao, inspired by visions of the Chinese gods, joins a violent uprising against the Western interlopers. Against all odds, their grass-roots rebellion is successful.  But in the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them. As the Boxer Rebellion gains momentum, Vibiana must decide whether to abandon her Christian friends or to commit herself fully to Christianity.

Gene Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. He was an established figure in the independent comics scene when he published his first book with First Second, American Born Chinese, which is now in print in over ten languages. ABC's instant critical and commercial success, along with its status as a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Printz Award, catapulted Yang into stardom as a brilliant writer for teens and young adults.

POLARITY VOL 1

Authors: Max Bemis
Artist: Jorge Coelho
Cover Artist: Frazer Irving
WHY WE LOVE IT: The combination of a very personal story with a completely fresh take on the nature of super powers had us hooked from the beginning.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Max Bemis is not only an incerdibly talented songwriter (and lead singer for the band Say Anything), but an exciting, fresh voice in comics. Jorge Coelho serves up dynamic, expressive action while keeping POLARITY grounded. Plus everyone hates hipsters, right?

WHAT IT IS: What if having super powers meant losing your mind?Tim Woods is a bipolar artist stuck in the world of hipsters, meaningless sex, and vain art — better known as Brooklyn. But after he survives a near fatal car accident, Tim discovers that his mental instability is more than just a disorder, and that his bipolar medication hasn’t just been subduing his manic depression…it’s been suppressing his super powers.
This collection comes with a free download code for the entire POLARITY E.P., including a fifth original song written and performed by Max Bemis!

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The world of Fablewood, where all of the stories that have ever been told live side-by-side, is a sinister place indeed!
