(1) Back and expanded to 4 sessions!
HOW TO DO STORYBOARDS FOR ANIMATION
Instructor: STEPHEN DeSTEFANO
4 sessions, MONDAYS
June 6, 13, 20 and 27
6:30-9:00 pm
$255 tuition / $235 for MoCCA members

No other pre-production stage of creating animation is lavished with as much time, care and expense as the storyboarding job. Often considered the best and most sought after job in the animation industry, storyboarding is the art of creating a blueprint for an entire animated film or episode.

Simply put, a storyboard is a very fancy and very long comic strip. But it's much more complex than that. Storyboard artists can make or break an animated production. Besides drawing ability, the storyboard artist must have knowledge of acting, writing, and cinematic theory to convey to laypeople and experts alike how exciting and entertaining an animated production has the potential to be. It's a hard job, being both highly technical and demandingly creative.

But it's possibly the most fun you can have in the world of cartoons. Instructor STEPHEN DeSTEFANO-veteran storyboard artist-will show you how it's done.

The class will acquaint the student with basic theories of, not one, but two different styles of storyboarding: The "Full Script" style (where a 'board artist is supplied with a fully-fleshed out script, featuring action and all dialogue created by writers); and The "Outline" style (the “Wild West of storyboarding,”) where a 'board artist is given several paragraphs of outlined story with minimal dialogue, requiring the artist to not only draw and devise action on the fly, but write final dialogue as well. Students will have the option of 'boarding a script or outline of their own creation if they prefer.

[While the class will focus on storyboarding for TV animation, 'boarding for other formats and venues will be touched upon, as well.]

The class format will consist of lectures and demonstrations by the instructors, as well as at-home and in-class assignments they will critique, including a final assignment which they will critique after the class via e-mail.

NOTES:

(1) Tools required for class. 2 pencils, an eraser, a sense of humor.
(2) Students will be supplied with an animation script to storyboard from; model sheets of characters, props and backgrounds to incorporate into their storyboards; and several sheets of thumbnail and storyboard templates.

STEPHEN DeSTEFANO began his cartooning career in 1985 drawing the fondly remembered 'Mazing Man for DC Comics. In 1992, he began working in television animation, drawing backgrounds for Nickelodeon's original Ren and Stimpy Show, eventually being promoted to storyboard artist. Studios and productions he has storyboarded for include Warner Bros (on Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and The Brave and the Bold); Universal Studios (on Earthworm Jim, Baby Huey, Beethoven, and The Woody Woodpecker Show); and Cartoon Network on several productions, including his own animated pilot film, The Thundermans. Stephen has served as an art director for Katbot, a Disney Television production, and as storyboard and design supervisor on Adult Swim's The Venture Brothers. (eventually being dubbed "the guru" by show creator Jackson Publick). He continues to work in animation, as well as comic books. His graphic novel, Lucky in Love (co-created with writer George Chieffet), was recently published by Fantagraphics Books.

(2) ADVANCED VISUAL STORYTELLING: EXPANDING YOUR COMICS VISION
Instructor: PETER KUPER
3 sessions: WEDNESDAYS June 8, 15, and 22
6:30-9:00 pm
$185 tuition / $165 for MoCCA members

Join visionary comics artist PETER KUPER and explore the medium of sequential art and learn how to find outlets for publishing your own self-generated comics and illustration projects. There will be weekly assignments with in-class crit sessions along with visual presentations and demonstrations by the instructor that will expand your familiarity with the history and vast potential of sequential art. Students should have some experience creating comics and should bring one example of their comics work to the first class. [No art supplies will be necessary in class.]

PETER KUPER is the co-founder of World War 3 Illustrated and has remained on its editorial board for over 30 years. His illustrations and comics have appeared in Time, The New York Times and MAD, where he has written and illustrated SPY vs. SPY every month since 1997. He has produced over twenty books and graphic novels including The System, Sticks and Stones, Speechless and Stop Forgetting To Remember. Peter has also adapted Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and many of Franz Kafka's works into comics. His adaptation of The Metamorphosis has been translated around the world and is in high school and college curriculums nation-wide. He won the 2010 Society of Illustrators gold medal for sequential art and appears in 2010's Best American Comics anthology. WizKids Announces Sell-Out of Marvel HeroClix: Captain America
logo May 20, 2011 (HILLSIDE, NJ) — WizKids Inc. announces the manufacturer sell-out of their most recent set, Marvel HeroClix®: Captain America. WizKids’ entire inventory of Marvel HeroClix: Captain America, releasing July 13th, 2011 has been completely sold to distributors worldwide.

The Marvel HeroClix: Captain America expansion will feature more than 60 figures in standard five-figure boosters. Celebrating 70 years of comic book history, Captain America’s allies and enemies will be spotlighted prominently in this long awaited addition to the HeroClix universe. Sub-themes in the set will include: the Serpent Society, S.H.I.E.L.D. Hydra, recent fan favorites the Secret Warriors, and more! And making their bold debut in HeroClix, removable elements will enhance the action with exciting in-game effects and abilities!"

"The HeroClix brand is growing at a remarkable rate. Our sales by release day for Giant Sized X-Men were the highest since I joined WizKids 5 year ago. And for the first time, our US distributors had sold out 2 weeks prior to release date.” said Lax Chandra, President of WizKids Games. “Captain America's sales and velocity far exceeded even Giant Sized X-Men -- Alliance had to stop taking orders 13 weeks prior to release. We want to thank our retail partners and customer base for the continued support."

Because of the shortage of product, WizKids is investigating an additional small print run for Captain America to support in-store organized play. American retailers should contact their WizKids distributor for more information. International retailers should contact their local distributors for ordering information.

UNLOCK THE VAULT
Image Comics Reunites Sarkar and Gastonny In New Series

Berkeley, CA – 19 May, 2011 – Image Comics is pleased to announce that writer Sam Sarkar and artist Garrie Gastonny (Warren Ellis’ Supergod), the team behind Caliber: First Canon of Justice, have reunited to unlock the horror and action within their new miniseries THE VAULT.

THE VAULT is about a small team of treasure hunters, struggling to excavate a dangerous and legendary treasure pit before a massive storm hits Sable Island, the "Graveyard of the North Atlantic." Equipped with all the latest technology, the scientists believe they are prepared against all of nature's fury, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to unleash.

"THE VAULT is kind of a contemporary Pandora’s Box story," explained creator and writer, Sam Sarkar. "Though it appears on the surface to be a pretty straightforward story, it has most of its mythology buried deeply. It gets uncovered both literally and figuratively as the pit gets excavated."

When asked how THE VAULT found its home at Image, Sarkar replied: "Well, I’m incredibly fortunate that most of the lasting gifts of Caliber were the relationships it helped to cement. Chief among them, David Elliott. Dave and I have soldiered through quite a few storms personally and professionally, and when I asked him to edit THE VAULT, he didn’t hesitate. There are few people I trust as much. I asked Dave what he thought the best way to release THE VAULT would be and Image was at the top of his list of publishers to approach. I’ve always been a fan of Image, not just because of their model, but because of the quality of titles they have represented and continue to represent."

THE VAULT #1 (1 of 3), a 32-page full color comic book, will be on sale in stores July 27th for $2.99 and is available to order in the June 2011 edition of Diamond Previews.

Today, the network announced that in addition to Torchwood alumni, John Barrowman, Eve Myles, and Kai Owen and new headliners, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman and Alexa Havins, that the 10-episode, hour-long series will also feature an impressive list of guest stars: Wayne Knight (“Seinfeld,” Jurassic Park), C. It's said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural occurrence - someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking "What is Torchwood?," he's drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.

This oversized issue contains a retelling of Sara Pezzini's origin story for the first time in the series' history since the iconic heroine was created more than fifteen years ago. WITCHBLADE #144 will also feature two spellbinding covers, including a wraparound retrospective by regular series artist Sejic and an iconic painting by fantasy illustrator Jean-Sebastien Rossbach (Magic: The Gathering). It will also include a backup story by writer and Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik and artist John Tyler Christopher that promises to reveal the origin of Sara's partner Patrick Gleason.

VESCELL: MIND, BODY AND SOUL
Image Comics Presents Sexy New Sci-Fi Series Vescell

BERKELEY, CA -- 17 May, 2011 -- Two newcomers are making an epic comics debut this August with a new series from Image Comics. VESCELL, by writer Enrique Carrion and artist John "Roc" Upchurch, merges science fiction and mysticism into a sexy, dangerous noir thriller. The futuristic setting that their twisted characters inhabit will draw readers into a world of science, sex, money, and spirituality. In short, VESCELL is a world of morality on the rocks.

"VESCELL is a project I was excited about from the beginning," said Upchurch. "As an artist, you want to create something unique and different and this is it. Enrique molded this insanely beautiful and imaginative world, so for me to bring it across visually is an amazing task."

"I can't draw for the life of me, not even a straight line, so I try to paint pictures with my words," explained Carrion. "When the reader picks up our book they are getting two layers of art: one from my artist "Roc" Upchurch and one from me."

Carrion continued, "I feel honored to be drafted to the Image team and plan to work hard so I can have a fantastic rookie year. Image Comics is experiencing a renaissance with a variety of new titles that are getting beautiful reviews. I want to be part of this wave; I want to be part of the Image Comics vision.”

The first issue of VESCELL will throw the readers straight into the sexy, futuristic world of former Icarus City Detective, Mauricio "Moo" Barrino. This seemingly straight-laced man is now charged with assisting the most high-profile, dangerous, and strange individual's desires to transfer their mind and spirit from one body to another: a process which the highly successful international company Vescell is best known for. As readers will soon discover, Moo may be hiding some secrets and vices of his own though!

VESCELL #1 (JUN110502), a 32-page full color comic with a cover price of $2.99, is available for order in the June issue of Previews and will be on sale August 31st.

“Dear Mr. Potter” launches pre-orders to enormous success
Announces exclusive raffles available only to pre-order purchases and celebrity contributors to the book

Boston, MA - Dear Mr. Potter: Letters of Love, Loss, and Magic, a compilation book of stories and artwork from The Harry Potter Generation, is now available for pre-order. Within 48 hours of sales opening more than 400 copies were sold and have amassed to nearly 1000 pre-orders in less than a month.

Dear Mr. Potter and the Harry Potter Alliance announced several exciting celebrity contributors to the book including Harry Potter actress Evanna Lynch and New York Times best-selling authors Melissa Anelli and John Green. Anelli is the author of Harry, A History and webmistress of the-leaky-cauldron.org. John Green is the author of several best-selling young adult novels and is one of YouTube’s biggest celebrities. The letters from these contributors, along with several others, will only be available to those who purchase the book in advance.

To encourage fans to pre-order, everyone who purchases the book before July 1, 2011 is automatically entered into two exclusive raffles. Both will be unveiled as the close of pre-orders approaches.

Dear Mr. Potter creator Lily Zalon has been particularly affected by this project and knows that it will mean a great deal to the fan community. "It's always been very clear that Harry Potter changed everything for a lot of people and the kids, many now adults, that grew up with these books will forever be a part of the Harry Potter Generation,” said Zalon. “Until now, there's never been a truly in-depth exploration of why Potter accomplished such an unprecedented level of popularity and loyalty. The letters and pictures in the book illustrate the intimate relationships millions of fans have had with the series."

Dear Mr. Potter features an assortment of content, including letters (some handwritten), photographs, and artwork. The stories told by each fan are incredibly diverse, ranging from heartbreaking and emotional to hilarious and heartwarming, and are written by fans from all walks of life.

In one submission, a teenager named Lidya B. discusses how she discovered Harry Potter after her younger brother passed away as an attempt to remember him through something he loved. There are letters from parents, explaining how they connected with their children by reading Harry Potter together or how they saw their child saved through the magic of J.K. Rowling's world. There are pictures showing siblings with nothing in common bonding over the novels. In many letters, fans talk about how Harry Potter saved them, be it from depression or bad situations at home. All of the submissions in Dear Mr. Potter prove, on a more personal level than ever shown before, that Harry Potter changes lives.

Evanna Lynch’s submission illustrates how serious an impact the novels have had on so many. She discusses, in the excerpt below, how Luna’s character effected her so profoundly.

“Although it was always tempting to go back to that dark, lonely, secure place and although there was was still that voice that whispered that I was too odd to risk just being ‘me’, you were always there to remind me that it was okay to be odd, particularly if one did it with aplomb. Through you, Luna, I realised that being odd wasn't really odd at all.”

All profits from “Dear Mr. Potter” will go to the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), a non-profit organization that engages youth in social justice issues through parallels from the Harry Potter novels. The profits will help to further the HPA’s extensive efforts, specifically surrounding literacy.

In his foreword to the book, HPA Executive Director Andrew Slack says: “These letters share a common thread: they have been written by the bravest of souls whose journeys have been inspired by our dear Mister Potter to love in spite of, and because of, loss. As you say to Harry in his sixth year, “Yes, Harry, you can love…which, given everything that has happened to you, is a great and remarkable thing. You are still too young to understand how unusual you are, Harry.” Indeed, professor. But may I be so bold as to add that these brave individuals who have internalized Harry’s steadfast ability to love, make “the Boy Who Lived” a bit less unusual.”

Dear Mr. Potter can be pre-ordered at www.thehpalliance.org/dearmrpotter until June 31, 2011.
