IDW Announces GHOSTBUSTERS Ongoing Series

All-new monthly series beginning in September

[Ghostbusters Ongoing #1 Cover Image]San Diego, CA (June 24, 2011) — IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products are thrilled to announce the launch of an all-new, ongoing GHOSTBUSTERS comic book series. Spinning out of IDW’s hit Infestation event, and featuring Ghostbusters: Infestation scribe Erik Burham, the ghost hunters from New York City are back with exciting new adventures starting in September. Helping Burnham bring this zany story of the dead to life will be fan-favorite artist Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters: What in Samhain Just Happened?!) and popular IDW Ghostbusters cover artist Nick Runge.

“My dream since I took over the editorial duties on IDW’s Ghostbusters comics license was to bring the boys in proton packs to monthly comics,” said series editor Tom Waltz. “We’ve had fantastic Ghostbusters one-shots and mini-series up to this point, but the incredible success of Ghostbusters: Infestation has proven that Ghostbusters fans, old and new alike, are still very hungry for ghostbusting tales. With the awesome creative team we’ve gathered to make it happen, the best is yet to come!”

In this ongoing series, psychokinetic energy is on the rise again, and business is booming for the boys. Ray is troubled by what could be a prophetic dream—is this an ill omen of an upcoming apocaplypse, or just a little indigestion? These questions and more are raised in the first issue of the all-new GHOSTBUSTERS comic series. In addition, each issue will contain two pages of exclusive behind-the-scenes extras by creator Tristan Jones (Tales of the TMNT.)

IDW will offer special retailer incentive covers, including a “Who Ya Gonna call” cover by Schoening, and a glow-in-the-dark cover. Furthermore, as part of IDW’s “Be a Ghostbuster” promotion, retailers will have the opportunity to obtain a unique variant featuring up to four personalized Ghostbusters on their cover. Fans are encouraged to reach out to their retailers to learn more about these exclusive variant covers.

GHOSTBUSTERS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in September 2011. Diamond order code: JUL11 0130

CBLDF Forms Coalition to Defend
American Comics Reader Facing Criminal Charges In Canada

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund today announces that it is forming a coalition to support the legal defense of an American citizen who is facing criminal charges in Canada that could result in a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison for comics brought into the country on his laptop. This incident is the most serious in a trend the CBLDF has been tracking involving the search and seizure of the print and electronic comic books carried by travelers crossing borders.

CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein says, "Although the CBLDF can't protect comic fans everywhere in every situation, we want to join this effort to protect an American comic fan being prosecuted literally as he stood on the border of our country for behavior the First Amendment protects here, and its analogues in Canadian law should protect there."

The CBLDF has agreed to assist in the case by contributing funds towards the defense, which has been estimated to cost $150,000 CDN. The CBLDF will also provide access to experts and assistance on legal strategy. The CBLDF’s efforts are joined by the recently re-formed Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund, a Canadian organization that will contribute to the fundraising effort. Please contribute to this endeavor by making a tax deductible contribution here.

The facts of the case involve an American citizen, computer programmer, and comic book enthusiast in his mid-twenties who was flying from his home in the United States to Canada to visit a friend. Upon arrival at Canadian Customs a customs officer conducted a search of the American and his personal belongings, including his laptop, iPad, and iPhone. The customs officer discovered manga on the laptop and considered it to be child pornography. The client’s name is being withheld on the request of counsel for reasons relating to legal strategy.

The images at issue are all comics in the manga style. No photographic evidence of criminal behavior is at issue. Nevertheless, a warrant was issued and the laptop was turned over to police. Consequently, the American has been charged with both the possession of child pornography as well as its importation into Canada. As a result, if convicted at trial, the American faces a minimum of one year in prison. This case could have far reaching implications for comic books and manga in North America.

The CBLDF's Board of Directors voted unanimously to aid the case by raising funds to contribute to the defense and to help the defense with strategy and expert resources.

Brownstein says, “This is an important case that impacts the rights of everyone who reads, publishes, and makes comics and manga in North America. It underscores the dangers facing everyone traveling with comics, and it can establish important precedents regarding travelers rights. It also relates to the increasingly urgent issue of authorities prosecuting art as child pornography. While this case won’t set a US precedent, it can inform whatever precedent is eventually set. This case is also important with respect to artistic merit in the Canadian courts, and a good decision could bring Canadian law closer to US law in that respect. With the help of our supporters, we hope to raise the funds to wage a fight that yields good decisions and to create tools to help prevent these sorts of cases from continuing to spread."

About CBLDF
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1986 as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comics community. They have defended dozens of Free Expression cases in courts across the United States, and led important education initiatives promoting comics literacy and free expression. For additional information, donations, and other inquiries call 800-99-CBLDF or visit them online at www.cbldf.org.

About CLLDF
The Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1987 to raise money for the defense of a Calgary, Alberta comic shop whose owners were charged with selling obscene materials. The CLLDF has since been maintained on an ad hoc basis to provide financial relief for Canadian comics retailers, publishers, professionals, or readers whose right to free speech has been infringed by civil authorities. Largely dormant since the early 1990s, the CLLDF is reforming to provide support for this case, and reorganizing to ensure that help will be readily available for future cases involving Canadian citizens or authorities. New Tennessee Law Threatens Freedom of Expression
There’s a new law in Tennessee that threatens freedom of expression and the right to privacy. Last week, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed into law HB 300, which makes criminals out of those who post images online that cause “emotional distress,” even when the emotionally distressed individual is not the intended recipient.

The language of the bill is extremely vague and open to interpretation; a prosecutor need only convince a jury that an image, phrase, or link was posted with the express purpose of causing distress in order for HB 300 to be invoked. Anyone who sees an image online can become a victim under the auspices of the law as written.

The cartoonists of Project: Rooftop all found different ways to bring Lady Liberty into the 21st century, and the drawings they created are being auctioned to support one of the most important liberties she represents: Freedom of Speech. IDW and Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment Announce
Code Word: Geronimo Graphic Novel

In-depth retelling of the SEAL Team 6 raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound

Available in September

Based on true events of the mission and written by Captain Dale Dye (USMC, Ret)

[Code Word Geronimo Cover]San Diego, CA (July 22, 2011) – IDW Publishing and Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment today have the honor of announcing CODE WORD: GERONIMO, an original graphic novel illustrating the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound by SEAL Team 6 on May 1, 2011. Expertly written by Captain Dale Dye (USMC, Ret.) and Dr. Julia Dye, Ph.D., CODE WORD: GERONIMO offers the amazing, moment-by-moment inside story of the clandestine raid that rid the world of this terrorist mastermind.

“Due to entirely appropriate security concerns, there is some creative license in our script,” said Captain Dye. “But I think readers will be gratified with the detail and thrilled with our take on one of the most daring and successful commando raids in American military history.”

This historical keepsake details the bravery and valor of SEAL Team 6 as it descends into Abbottabad, Pakistan and achieves the near impossible. Joining the Dyes to bring this incredible graphic novel to life are artists Gerry Kissell (The A-Team: War Stories, Iron Sky) and Amin Amat (Buckaroo Banzai, Iron Sky). John M. Del Vecchio, decorated Vietnam veteran and best-selling author of the The 13th Valley, will also provide afterword material. A portion of the proceeds from CODE WORD: GERONIMO will be donated to a charity supporting military service members.

“I have worked for many years now with Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment on a number of successful projects,” said Tom Waltz, IDW editor, former Marine and Desert Storm I veteran. “But none of those compare to the excitement and pride I have for CODE WORD: GERONIMO. The Dyes have put together a fantastic script detailing the heroically dangerous raid by SEAL Team 6 against Public Enemy Number One, Osama Bin Laden, and I firmly believe you won’t get a more accurate account of this pivotal moment in history unless it is told by the SEAL team members themselves.”

Following an exceptional career in the United States Marine Corps, Captain Dye is now best known as the military advisor to Hollywood for his work on over seventy films, from Platoon to Saving Private Ryan, and Band Of Brothers to The Pacific. Captain Dye is also the acclaimed author of many novels, including Outrage and Laos File.

CODE WORD: GERONIMO ($15.99, hardcover, full color, 88 pages) will be available in stores throughout North America on September 6, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-61377-097-9

EPOCH: THE GREATEST TOURNAMENT EVER
Kevin McCarthy & Paolo Pantalena To Debut New Supernatural Miniseries

Berkeley, CA – 22 June 2011 – Image Comics, Top Cow Productions, and Heroes and Villains Entertainment proudly present a dark and intensely kinetic tale from writer Kevin McCarthy (Red Sonja, The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist) and artist Paolo Pantalena (What If?: House of M, War of Kings: Darkhawk). EPOCH, a 5-part miniseries beginning in August, will introduce readers to a whole new reality which pits one supernatural creature against another in a dangerous competition.

"EPOCH meets all of my criteria for a cool comic: murder, mayhem, mythology, mystery, and monsters. And a hero that dresses like Ming the Merciless," explained McCarthy. "EPOCH is the kind of comic I'd want to buy. Where else can you see an angel with inner demons solve the murder of a werewolf, pistol-whip a wizard, and run game on a gorgon?"

"When Heroes and Villains Entertainment presented us with EPOCH, we knew we had a terrifically dynamic, exciting world that comic fans would really respond to," said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. "Kevin McCarthy has really brought the concept to life with a huge cast of fascinating characters and intrigue that will keep readers coming back month after month. And if that's not enough, Paolo Pantalena's art is sure to grab fans by their eyeballs and refuse to let go."

As the story of EPOCH begins, NYPD Detective Jonah Wright’s world is about to change forever. A mysterious murder case that he has been investigating threatens to rip apart his reality, plunging him into the shadowy world of the supernatural. It appears that Bishop is fated to unlock a conspiracy that could tear apart the very fabric of society!

EPOCH #1, a 32-page full color science fiction fantasy comic book for $3.99, will be available at a comic store near you on August 3, 2011.

Long out of print, the wildly popular Clockwork Girl series was originally released in five illustrated stories and sold more than 340,000 copies around the world. The full story of THE CLOCKWORK GIRL (Harper Design//On Sale: July 12, 2011//ISBN:9780062080394) comes to life again in this beautifully illustrated graphic novel with a new foreword from The Clockwork Girl's original authors, Sean O’Reilly and Kevin Hanna, along with playful, full-page pin-ups of the characters.

The story takes place in a whimsical land far, far away where inventors compete to show off their latest trinkets and inventions at the local fair. A mad scientist, determined to win the top prize at the fair, creates a robot Clockwork Girl. Against all odds, she finds love and companionship in Huxley, the amazing mutant circus boy. Despite the threats of their warring families, they begin to explore the world together and discover what it means to be human—to move, to think, and ultimately, to love.
This fall, a paperback version of THE CLOCKWORK GIRL will correspond with the release of the 3-D luximation animation film version of THE CLOCKWORK GIRL. The film is voiced by a “dream team” of actors as the characters, such as Carrie Ann Moss (Matrix), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Alexa Vega (Spy Kids), Jesse McCartney (Horton Hears a Who) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond). An exciting sneak peek teaser is available online at http://www.theclockworkgirl.com.

THE CLOCKWORK GIRL has won the Moonbeam Award, as well as the Graphic Novel of the Year Award at Book Expo America by ForeWord magazine.

HEARTBREAK IS BIG BUSINESS
Hopeless & Mellon Find Perfect Match for Lovestruck at Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – 21 June 2011 – This September, Image Comics will bring readers a love story like no other. Former collaborators on the Gearhead series, writer Dennis Hopeless (HACK/SLASH TRAILERS 2) and artist Kevin Mellon (THIS IS A SOUVENIR: THE SONGS OF SPEARMINT AND SHIRLEY LEE, COMIC BOOK TATTOO, S.H.I.E.L.D.) are now set to debut LOVESTRUCK, an original graphic novel about the manipulations of a greedy modern Cupid who has made love his business.

"Love is such a powerful part of our lives and yet for so many people it’s just an impossibility,” said Hopeless. "We all have those friends who are talented and charming and great in every other way but just can’t make relationships work. They’re always in their own way. Lovestruck is about what happens when these hopelessly loveless folks are given all the powers of Cupid. But how can you control love when you don’t believe in it?"

“Dennis first came to me with the idea as a follow up to Gearhead and we batted it around for a while,” added Mellon. “It was like a light kind of shone on me and it became something I not only wanted to do, but had to do. One of the many joys about working with Dennis is that everything we come up with together, I pretty much HAVE to do. Come hell or high water.”

Along with strikingly beautiful cover art by Erik Jones, Mellon’s clean, detailed line work illustrates the modern setting of Hopeless' unconventional love story perfectly. In LOVESTRUCK, Kali Monroe gets paid to break hearts. When love is a billion-dollar industry and the closest thing to cupid is a megalomaniacal CEO, what’s a girl to do?

However, Hopeless and Mellon's version of Cupid, as Caleb Goellner of ComicsAlliance put it, "...is far from a cherub... and bears more of a resemblance to the theoretical lovechild of Marvel's Wilson Fisk and Akira's Tetsuo than a happy naked angel baby dude you'd want shooting infatuation arrows your way."

LOVESTRUCK OGN, a 192-page black and white original graphic novel for $16.99, will be available at a comic store near you on September 7, 2011.

THE RATING GAME
Image Comics Announces Rating System

Berkeley, CA – 21 June 2011 – Image Comics titles will soon adopt a rating system consistent with that instituted by DC Comics in January of this year. This rating system will be used for both print and digital releases.

Beginning with July 2011 titles, all Image titles will use the following rating system:

E - EVERYONE (all ages, may contain minimal violence)
T - TEEN (12 and up, may contain mild violence or mild profanity)
T+ - TEEN PLUS (16 and up, may contain moderate violence, moderate profanity use and suggestive themes )
M - MATURE (18 and up, may contain nudity, profanity, excessive violence and other content not suitable for minors)

"Retailers have been asking us to more clearly define which audiences our various comics are aimed at for some time, and we're pleased to finally comply with those requests," said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "It's been nearly a decade since the comics industry began the process of abandoning the Comics Code Authority, but during that time there hasn't been one consistent rating system. The system DC employs is by far the clearest, so it makes sense to go with that."
