NEWAVE! Mini Comix Book Launch Party This Saturday at Fantagraphics Bookstore
JANUARY 27, SEATTLE, WA - Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts an exhibition and publication party for NEWAVE! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s this Saturday, January 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.
Self published mini comics in the 1970s and 1980s were the direct descendants of the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s. Early practitioners photocopied, stapled and distributed their miniature zines at comics conventions and comic book specialty shops. The immediacy and independence of these publications gave rise to today’s popular alternative comics movement.
The exhibition includes original art and graphics by underground mini comix pioneers Jaimie Alder, Jim Blanchard, Wayne Gibson, David Lasky, Wayno, Steve Willis, Dennis Worden, and XNO. NEWAVE editor Michael Dowers will produce and distribute a mini comic on site. A comix jam by contributing artists will be accompanied by music from local indie rock band “iji.”
The Seattle Public Library’s popular “Comixtravaganza” finale also takes place this Saturday. The central branch hosts a comics creating workshop with Fantagraphics friends Greg Stump and David Lasky at 1:00 PM, followed by a career-spanning media presentation by alternative comics titan Peter Bagge at 3:00 PM. Later that evening Lasky and Bagge will be featured guests at the NEWAVE party. Admission is free to all events.
Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street at Airport Way in the heart of Georgetown. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00. Phone 206.658.0110.

AND BOOM! STUDIOS
LAUNCH
COLD SPACE
THIS APRIL
FROM THE FOLKS THAT BROUGHT YOU
AFRO SAMURAI
1 Hostile Planet
2 Warring Factions
Add An Outlaw…
Seems Like There’s Some Money To Be Made Out In
Cold Space!
January 28th, 2009 - Los Angeles, CA - This April, BOOM! Studios teams up with legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon — the folks that brought you the Emmy award-winning AFRO SAMURAI — to deliver their next original comic book series, COLD SPACE. A hard-boiled sci-fi action-adventure with covers by Eisner Award-winner Dave Johnson and IRREDEEMABLE cover artist Jeffrey Spokes, COLD SPACE is sure to be the most talked-about comic of the spring.
COLD SPACE follows the adventures of an on-the-run outlaw as he crash-lands on a hostile planet that is on the brink of civil war. Finding himself in the crossfire between two warring factions, Mullbery realizes that in chaos lies opportunity — because where there's war, there's money to be made.
Samuel L. Jackson says, "I'm a long time comic reader and big fan of many genres in graphic novels and manga - from crime thrillers, westerns, & super-hero books, to samurai dramas, science fiction and horror. So I actually do read the stuff - and lots of it. Now's my chance to put my stamp on the medium with something new, but with a classic taste of the stuff I already like."
“It's my honor to continue my creative relationship with Samuel L. Jackson and to work with the passionate people at BOOM! Studios,” said COLD SPACE co-writer Eric Calderon. “I hope everyone will dig the excellent covers by Dave Johnson, Jeffrey Spokes and the tight interior line work by Mr. Jeremy Rock.”
“C’mon, who are we kidding, this is a fanboy dream! Don’t pinch me, I don’t wanna wake up!” said BOOM! Chief Executive Officer Ross Richie. “This is going to be a straight-up blast!”
COLD SPACE is a four-issue miniseries written by Samuel L. Jackson and Eric Calderon with interior art by the sensational Jeremy Rock. The first issue features two covers in a 50/50 split, with art by Dave Johnson and Jeffrey Spokes, a 1-in-10 incentive cover and carries a Diamond Code of FEB100744. Each issue will retail for $3.99.

Through Suffrage, the Equal Rights Amendment, the Prop 8 shockwaves, the legal battle for equal rights has been fought at different times, on differing fronts, for varied communities. In response to the growing resistance to equal rights for the LGBT population, the creative community is gathering, during Oscar Week to bring inspiration through the creation of original artworks, performances and special installations that raise visibility for the grass roots efforts to ensure full Equal Rights to LGBT Americans
Leading up to the March events, MANIFESTEQUALITY will sponsor a nationwide online art contest focusing on the themes of Equality, Justice, Respect, Unity, Civil Rights and Love. Submissions will be reviewed by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Annie Philbin (Hammer Museum), Shepard Fairey (Artist), Ed Ruscha (Artist), Lari Pittman (Artist), Lisa Love (Senior WC Editor, Vogue), Franklin Sirmans (Curator Contemporary Art, LACMA) Edgar Arceneaux (Director, Watts House Project), Rick Jacobs (Founder, Courage Campaign), David Pagel (Art Critic). Five winning artists will have their work hang with nationally recognized artists at the MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery space, and ten second prize winners will be selected to join the online exhibition. Submissions will be accepted through February 19, 2010.
The MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery issues a call-to-action, with artists motivating public energy toward true reform on a local, state and national level. Artists, grass roots activists, performers, celebrity guests, art collectors, musicians, public officials and the general public will display their works and show support at the MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery in Hollywood, CA. just blocks from the Kodak Theater where the Academy Awards will be held.
The MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery invites artists from across the nation to use their voices and talents to amplify and motivate the grass roots movement who fight for full & unrestricted equal rights for all Americans. IDW and the Library of American Comics
Announce L'il Abner
First comprehensive collection of groundbreaking comic series begins in April
San Diego, CA (January 26, 2010) – IDW Publishing and its imprint, the Library of American Comics, are proud to announce the upcoming series, The Complete L’il Abner, collecting Al Capp’s comedy masterpiece as never before. Volume one of this new collection will feature both daily comics and previously unreprinted full-color Sunday pages from 1934 to 1936.
Debuted on August 13, 1934, L’il Abner became one of the most influential comic strips of all time during its 43-year run. Creator Al Capp developed the hillbilly character of L’il Abner, striking a nerve with Depression-era America through his social commentary, mock dialectics and hapless yet lovable Yokum family.
In The Complete L’il Abner, Volume One, the title character moves to New York to live with his rich aunt and has to dodge kidnappers and socialites, alike. Meanwhile, back home in Dogpatch, Marrying Sam works to get Abner and gorgeous Daisy Mae to the altar, while shiftless Hannibal Hoops schemes to split them apart! Then it’s a classic case of mistaken identity when Abner’s evil twin, the ruthless criminal Gat Garson, comes to town.
The Complete L’il Abner, Volume One is published by IDW under its Eisner award-winning imprint, the Library of American Comics. The Complete L’il Abner series is edited and designed by Dean Mullaney, with a biographical essay by Bruce Canwell, and an introduction by Denis Kitchen. Included in the introduction are the proto-Abner “Big Leviticus” strips that Capp created the year before Abner began when he ghosted Joe Palooka for Ham Fisher.
The Complete L’il Abner Volume One ($49.99; 288 pages; hardcover) will be available in stores in April. Diamond order code JAN10 1030; ISBN 978-1600106118.

THE LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME #1 SECOND PRINTING TO HIT SHELVES ALONGSIDE #2
January 26th, Los Angeles – Retailers and fans who missed The Last Days of American Crime #1 the first time around now have a second chance to pick up the newest critically acclaimed title from Rick Remender (Punisher, Fear Agent). Radical Publishing is pleased and proud to announce that the second printing of Remender’s newest sold-out crime masterpiece, featuring series artist Greg Tocchini (Marvel 1602: New World), will be hitting shelves again alongside the highly anticipated second issue.
The Last Days of American Crime takes place in the not-too-distant future, where the U.S. government plans in secret to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts as a final response to terrorism and crime. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards. Graham Bricke, a career criminal never quite able to hit the big score, intends to steal one of the charging stations, skip the country and live off unlimited funds for the rest of his life. But the media has leaked news of the anti-crime signal one week before it was to go live... and now Graham and his team have just a few days to turn the heist of the century into the last crime in American history.
Critics and fans have raved over The Last Days of American Crime #1.
"From cover art to opening pages, Last Days hits readers with an unflinching dose of pulp noir seediness and doesn't let up." – John Geddes, USAToday.com
“…because there are no new stories, writers must perform a magic act in order to make the reader believe he is reading something new. Well, someone get Rick Remender a top hat and a wand because he accomplishes it in the down and dirty Last Days of American Crime. By infusing a classic noir heist with the tension of modern American politics, Remender gives us a great opening to a comic series – perhaps even on the level of Criminal or 100 Bullets.” – Andy Bentley, IGN Comics
“The Last Days of American Crime” #1 is a good first issue that sets up the world and the crime at hand well. If you enjoy “Criminal” and other crimes books, you’ll probably get a kick out of this.” – Chad Nevitt, Comic Book Resources
“Remender paces this first act with just enough information, bravado, and grizzled noir to keep a hungry reader satisfied.” – Noel Bartocci, Broken Frontier
“This is crime fiction at its best. Remender totally immerses you in their world, and it's a hell of a ride.” – Sebastian Piccione, Project Fanboy
Don’t miss your chance to join the heist of the century! Check out The Last Days of American Crime #1 second printing (Diamond Code: DEC098036) alongside The Last Days of American Crime #2 with covers by Alex Maleev (Diamond Code: DEC090978) and Greg Tocchini (Diamond Code: DEC090979). – Rockne S. O’Bannon
Farscape show creator
January 25th, 2010 - Los Angeles, CA – BOOM! Studios’ best-selling FARSCAPE series enters its second year with a fresh dose of bad attitude with the premiere of FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS – coming this April! Written by show creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS brings one of the greatest sci-fi villains of all time to his own ongoing series.
An excellent new entry point for Farscape fans that might have missed the previous BOOM! Farscape series, FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS finds everyone’s favorite black leather clad villain - Scorpius - deposed from his throne on Hyneria and making a bold new discovery that could put him back on top of the Uncharted Territories!
Written by series creator Rockne S. O’Bannon and scripted by fan-favorite STAR TREK novelist David Alan Mack, FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS is the must have book of this spring.
"What is it about villains that fascinates us so? Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter, Galactus, Magneto...and in the Farscape universe it's Scorpius," said Farscape show creator and FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS writer Rockne S. O'Bannon. "Fans of Farscape who've always wondered what's going on in that sick little black leather clad head of Scorpius's are in for a real treat. And readers who are new to Farscape but whose tastes run toward the freakish, shocking, and totally unsettling should find the Scorpius books the perfect dark entry into the ongoing Farscape world."
"Our goal with the Farscape comics is always 'what is going to blow fans' minds?’ When Rockne told me his idea for this series I knew everyone reading these comics would freak,” said Farscape comics editor Ian Brill. “Farscape has some of the best fans in sci-fi and they deserve great stories. With FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS, Rockne and David Alan Mack are delivering a thrilling and intense experience. This is a book befitting the genius creation that is Scorpius."
"What the creative team on FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS is accomplishing is exactly what attracted BOOM! to FARSCAPE in the first place...phenomenal sci-fi adventures in a mythology that knows no bounds," said BOOM! Studios Managing Editor Matt Gagnon. "Scorpius is always defined in our minds as John Crichton's resilient antagonist, but Rockne and the team, from the first issue, will prove that there's more to our favorite half-Scarran, half-Sebacean than meets the eye."
Debuting on the SCI-FI Channel in 1998, FARSCAPE follows the adventures of astronaut John Crichton, who has a freak accident during an experimental space mission that catapults him across a thousand galaxies to an alien battlefield. Suddenly, he's trapped among alien creatures wielding deadly technology - a battle that 20th century sci-fi pop culture never prepared him for. Hunted by a merciless military race led by Scorpius, Crichton begins his quest for home from a distant galaxy.
A groundbreaking award-winning sci-fi production, FARSCAPE from The Jim Henson Company and [HALLMARK] has become a global favorite. Named by TV Guide as one of television's "Best Cult Shows Ever" and most recently named by EMPIRE Magazine as one of the "50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time," FARSCAPE is known for the overwhelming fan-based campaign that led to its miniseries production. The show has continued to find new audiences as it airs in syndication and is available on iTunes and DVD.
FARSCAPE: SCORPIUS #0 is written by Rockne S. O’Bannon and scripted by David Alan Mack with interior art by hot newcomer Mike Ruiz. The debut issue features two covers in a 50/50 split, with art by Nick Runge and Chad Hardin, a 1-in-10 incentive cover and carries a Diamond Code of FEB100749.

DREAMER HAS FORM AND SUBSTANCE
The Dreamer Graphic Novel is a finalist in the 2009 Cybils Awards
(Columbus, OH) –January 25, 2010 -- Lora Innes’s THE DREAMER, a romantic and rich story told with well-researched historical accuracy, has captured the hearts of young minds becoming a finalist in the 2009 Cybils awards.
The Cybil’s awards are unique in that the goal is to show the insight of the community of Children’s and Young Adult Bloggers for book related products. The awards are given to those products that show kid appeal doesn’t have to lose substance. The Dreamer has also been nominated in the 2009 Harvey awards for Best New Talent and Best New Series.
THE DREAMER tells the story of seventeen-year-old Beatrice Whaley, a student who begins having vivid dreams about a brave and handsome soldier named Alan Warren, a member of an elite group known as Knowlton’s Rangers that fought during the Revolutionary War. Hi Everyone!
It's almost here! My first full-color graphic novel, SMILE, will be in stores next week. I've got the book, a video trailer, and a release party to tell you about!
---
The Book: The official release date is Tuesday, February 2, and you will be able to find it in most major book stores stores including Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books A Million, Chapters, and so forth. Look for it in the "young readers' graphic novels" section, which is usually near the teen graphic novels and manga, or near the children's book section (you may need to check both, depending on the store!). If you're confused, just ask an employee to help you find it!
Online orders will also ship next week! I recently revised my website, which has links to all your online ordering options: http://goraina.com/books_smile.html There, you'll also be able to read a preview of the book and some of the early reviews.
If you'd rather get SMILE from your local comic shop, it should ship on Wednesday, February 3. If for some reason you can't find a copy, ask the store to order one for you! If you'd like to find your nearest local comic shop, you can always call 1-888-COMIC-BOOK, or go to http://comicshoplocator.com
---
The Video: To whet your appetite, I've created a SMILE Video Trailer! You can watch it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjAmPnXq9Dc
The video was animated and produced by my friend Alison Wilgus, and the music is by my friends from the band Harry and the Potters. I'd love for people to share this video, so feel free to link to it if you've got a blog, a Twitter account, Facebook profile...and I welcome feedback in the comments under the video itself on YouTube.
---
The Party: I'm throwing a book release party on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, FROM 4-6 PM, at one of my favorite local comic shops, ROCKETSHIP! Here's a link to the party flier: http://goraina.com/?p=29 As you can see from that, I'll be doing a live visual reading (with an Embarrassing Valentine's Day theme), there will be braces-friendly food, 90s music, and some surprise goodies for everyone in attendance. I encourage you to bring your kids, or someone else's kids, for a fun afternoon! Here are the vital details:
