BOOM! Studios Launches Softcover Program for Archaia's Best-selling Original Graphic Novel Series 'Rust'

Rust: The Boy Soldier

December 17, 2015 (Los Angeles, Calif.) - Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the March 2016 release of Royden Lepp’s Rust: The Boy Soldier, the vanguard of a new softcover program for the Archaia imprint.

Rust: The Boy Soldier collects the prelude stories from the first three original graphic novels (Rust: Visitor in the Field, Rust: Secrets of the Cell, and Rust: Death of the Rocket Boy) and presents them in  new reading order with the never-before-seen prelude from the upcoming fourth installment, Rust: Soul in the Machine (2017). The inaugural volume will ship with an introductory price of $10.99.

Rust: The Boy Soldier chronicles Jet’s experiences during a massive world war. Made to look like a boy, but actually a robot built for battle, Jet is caught in the middle. While trying to save countless lives, Jet discovers there’s more to him than he could have imagined. His experiences in the war set him on a journey to learn what it means to be both hero and human.

“With the fourth volume of Rust on the horizon, we want this softcover program to get existing readers excited all over again, plus invite new readers into this fantastic world that Royden has created,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Rust: The Boy Soldier is a great gateway for those not familiar with the story of Jet Jones the robot boy, and I think the never-before-seen prelude from the fourth volume is the perfect reason for longtime fans to pick it up!”

Outside of the prelude stories, the Rust series follows Jet, post-war, after he is thrust into the lives of the Taylor family, having crashed into the side of their barn. Oldest son Roman Taylor struggles to keep his family’s small farm afloat as the area heals from the war. While the rest of his family may not trust the mysterious boy with the jetpack, Roman believes the secrets of Jet’s past may be the key to their survival . . . The first volume, Rust: Visitor in the Field, will be released in softcover in fall 2016.

Rust: The Boy Soldier (6” x 9”, 144 pages, sepia-toned, softcover, $10.99), written and illustrated by Royden Lepp, will be available for sale in comic book shops (Diamond code JAN161192) and wherever books are sold (ISBN 978-1-60886-806-3) in March 2016.

December 17, 2015 (Los Angeles, Calif.) - If you were a kid in the early ’90s, chances are Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series had a significant impact on your childhood. The iconic superhero franchise is a multi-generational, globally recognized pop-culture phenomenon and has seen continued success for more than 22 years. This coming January, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is partnering with Saban Brands to bring the fun and adventure of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team to modern day with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0, written by Kyle Higgins (Batman Eternal, Nightwing) and illustrated by Hendry Prasetya (Green Lantern, Power Girl).

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which first premiered in 1993, is a live-action children’s television series about a group of ordinary teenagers who “morph” into superheroes to save the world from evil. Each Ranger is identifiable by their individual Ranger colors: Jason the Red Ranger, Zack the Black Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger and Kimberly the Pink Ranger. A sixth member, Tommy the Green Ranger, joins later in the series. Since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted, Saban’s Power Rangers series has continuously aired on television, with the upcoming 23rd season, Power Rangers Dino Super Charge, premiering in early 2016. BOOM!’s comic series will focus exclusively on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and appeal especially to super fans who grew up watching the show in the ‘90s.

Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers make their BOOM! Studios comic debut in this kick-off #0 issue, which sets the stage for the rest of the series. After escaping Rita Repulsa’s mind control, Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, joins the rest of the Power Rangers to combat her never-ending evil plans. Any semblance of a normal life is now gone for Tommy, but with his newfound family there lies hope for a brighter path. This issue also includes the short story from the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics by Mairghread Scott (Toil and Trouble, Transformers: Windblade) and Daniel Bayliss (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Dragons), and the first installment of a Bulk and Skull-centric adventure by Steve Orlando (Midnighter) and Corin Howell (Ben 10).

“We’ve been teasing this launch for a while now, so it’s nice to finally unveil some of the big plans we have in store for the fans,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “We’ve worked to create something that is fun and fresh, yet still carries the authenticity of the original Power Rangers series we grew up loving and continue to be fans of today. We’re exploring one of our favorite Ranger’s toughest times and doing it in a way that we, as fans ourselves, are excited to dig deeper into.”

“The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers served as a launching pad for the now global Power Rangers franchise and it’s been exciting to see it come full circle through our partnership with BOOM! Studios,” said Marcy George, VP of Global Consumer Product for Saban Brands. “BOOM! has brought on notable artists, including Paul Pope and Kevin Wada, to bring to life these iconic characters. It will be fascinating for fans to explore completely new adventures through the comic books and learn more about the original team of Power Rangers.”

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 arrives in comic shops on January 13th for $3.99 under Diamond Order code NOV151136. There will be a collection of seven intermixed Ranger covers by Spectrum Award-Nominated artist Goñi Montes (RoboCop), including the 1-in-50 Green Ranger cover and the ultra rare 1-in-100 White Ranger cover.

The final order cutoff deadline for retailers is December 21st. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one!

IDW to Collect Al Williamson’s
Classic Star Wars in Artist’s Edition

San Diego, CA (December 18, 2015) – The legendary late artist Al Williamson’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back stories are collected in the award-winning Artist’s Edition format this April. Included will be the complete adaptation, first published in issues #39 through #44 of the monthly Marvel Star Wars comic. In addition, pages from Star Wars #50, #98 and the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi mini series will also be presented.

"Al loved drawing Star Wars,” said Williamson’s wife, Cori Williamson. “It’s a science fiction swashbuckler, the kind of story that really appealed to his sensibilities. As a lover and collector of classic comic-book and comic strip art, I think he would have been thrilled to see his work presented in this format."

Williamson began his storied career as one of the star artists at EC Comics in the 1950s. In the 1960s Williamson drew the definitive comic-book version of Flash Gordon, Alex Raymond’s classic comic strip creation. Other highlights of Williamson’s work include the X-9: Secret Agent Corrigan newspaper strip, as well as the Star Wars newspaper strip. He is an Eisner Award-winning artist and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic-Book Hall of Fame in 2000.

“The collaboration between IDW and Marvel has produced some of the most exceptional collections of reprinted original comic book material ever to be offered,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Al Williamson’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Artist’s Edition of the original Marvel Comics film adaptation is a brightly glowing star within the galaxy of immaculate Star Wars content.”

George Lucas commented after Williamson’s passing in 2010, "I was thrilled to be able to have Al depicting those early extended Star Wars adventures for the comic books and newspapers. In capturing the actors who portrayed the characters, he brought the feeling of the films to the page as few other artists have been able to do."

This incredible Artist’s Edition will be a 160 page hardcover and measure a whopping 14”x21”. The Force is strong in this book, don’t you dare miss it!

Manga author/artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in 1974 in rural Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Like many kids, he was first inspired to become a manga artist in elementary school when he read DRAGON BALL. After spending time in art school, he won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his story, Karakuri. After considering various genres for his next project, Kishimoto decided on a story steeped in traditional Japanese culture. His first version of NARUTO, drawn in 1997, was a one-shot story about fox spirits; his final version, which debuted in Japan in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, quickly became the most popular ninja manga in the world. The series would also spawn multiple anime series, movies, novels, video games and more. Having concluded the series in late 2014, Masashi Kishimoto has kept himself busy this year with the side story, NARUTO: THE SEVENTH HOKAGE AND THE SCARLET SPRING, and writing the story for the latest NARUTO movie, Boruto: Naruto the Movie, both of which focus on the title character's son, Boruto.

VIZ Media is the North American master licensor for NARUTO and publishes the bestselling NARUTO manga series in print and digitally and also distributes the NARUTO and NARUTO SHIPPUDEN anime series and feature films. Additional information on NARUTO is available at www.Naruto.com.
