Mark Waid & John Rogers’ THRILLBENT
Comes To Print At IDW
The Next Phase Is Here

San Diego, CA (October 31, 2014) – In 2012, award-winning comics writer Mark Waid and writer/producer John Rogers launched Thrillbent, a digital comics webportal and an experiment in new-media comic-book publishing. Their mission statement: “To challenge 75 years’ worth of accepted ‘rules’ about what comics are and aren’t.” The commitment to this challenge continues as Thrillbent and IDW Publishing partner to bring these unique digital comics to print starting spring 2015.

“I love print comics,” said Waid, whose own personal collection is legendary. “While we have always proudly been digital-first, print was always in Thrillbent’s business plan--but for a start-up company like ours, it was cost-prohibitive. Once we proved our commitment to ongoing content--Thrillbent currently hosts literally hundreds of new comics, with more added every week--we were courted by several print publishers looking to partner. IDW was the clear choice--its track record for innovation is unbeatable and undeniable.”

Over the past two years, Thrillbent has worked with more than 60 creators to publish nearly 20 ongoing digital-only series (and counting) that span all genres, from horror to humor to high adventure. The first series slated for print release under this partnership will be Empire Volume Two and Insufferable, both written by Waid.

Empire Volume Two is a sequel to the Eisner-nominated series co-created by Waid and artist Barry Kitson from 2000, which Waid describes as “the single most-asked about project in my career--‘When’s Empire coming back?’ is the one question I know I’ll hear at every convention or store signing”. Waid and Kitson have joined forces once again in 2014 to deliver new installments that continue the saga of Golgoth, a remorseless villain whose plans for world domination have won him the planet Earth… and made him the target of every inhabitant. As a kickoff to the larger Thrillbent partnership, IDW will produce an all-new edition of the long-sold-out Empire Volume One and launch it just ahead of Empire v2. Both books will debut next spring.

Also by Waid, with co-creator Peter Krause, Insufferable is a series that explores what happens when a crime fighter’s sidekick grows up to be less a hero constantly at war with his mentor--and what it would take to draw the two back together again for one last adventure. Krause, also Waid’s partner in crime on the 2007 series Irredemable, provides the artwork on this unique look at the superhero genre.

“In addition to being one of the best comic-book writers in modern times, Mark Waid has also proven himself with Thrillbent to be one of the smarter forward-thinkers in comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “We’re very happy to be partnered with Mark, John Rogers and all the other great Thrillbent creators to help bring their work to comic fans in this way.”

BOOM! Studios Turns 10!
The Publisher Kicks Off Celebrating 10 Years in 2015 with a Yearlong Cover Strategy to Reward Retailers and Fans

10 Years Logo
BOOM! Studios 10 Years Trade Dress Logo

October 30,  2014 - Los Angeles, CA - In 2015, BOOM! Studios turns 10 years old, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary, the award-winning publisher is excited to announce a yearlong cover strategy starting in January designed to spotlight all of its new launches and reward many lucky retailers and fans. Every launching issue in 2015 will include a uniquely designed “10 Years” incentive variant cover featuring work by one of 16 of the industry’s best cover artists. Each artist (or artist team) will provide all the covers to all of the newest titles coming out from BOOM! or one of its imprints (KaBOOM!, Archaia, and BOOM! Box), with the roster rotating each quarter. The special “10 Years” covers will be retailer incentives available to order for retailers for every 10 copies they order of the title’s main cover.

For the first quarter of 2015 (January-March), the artists are:

  • All launching BOOM! Studios titles: Trevor Hairsine (Captain America, Eternal Warrior)
  • All launching KaBOOM! titles: Joe Quinones (Harley Quinn, Big Trouble in Little China)
  • All launching Archaia titles: Ramón Pérez (Amazing Spider-Man, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand)
  • All launching BOOM! Box titles: Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb (Adventure Time, The Midas Flesh)

Cover artists for the remaining quarters of 2015 will be announced at a later date.

In January, new launching titles to receive the “10 Years” Cover treatment include:

  • Burning Fields #1 (BOOM! Studios)
  • Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift #1 (KaBOOM!)
  • Feathers #1 (Archaia)
  • Munchkin #1 (BOOM! Box)

The cover images will be revealed closer to each title’s order deadline.

In addition, BOOM! will select one launching title each month and slip one, rare exclusive cover intermixed into every 100 copies of the main cover printed. Dubbed the Jackpot Variant, these special covers will show up randomly at any comic shop that orders at least one copy of the title. For January, that title is Munchkin #1, a new ongoing series from BOOM! Box based on the hit adventure card game. The Jackpot Variant cover for Munchkin #1 is illustrated by Evan Palmer (Cooking with Food).

Finally, should any of its new titles in 2015 launch with a final combined initial order of over 10,000 copies, BOOM! will unlock an additional 1-in-10 intermixed special variant that will ship with the main cover.

To help mark its 10th anniversary, BOOM! will include a new “10 Years” trade dress logo that will be featured on the covers of all its single-issue releases in 2015.

“We’re very proud to reach our 10th anniversary here at BOOM! Studios, so to celebrate, we wanted to make sure we included the people that helped us get where we are today: comics retailers and fans,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “This yearlong program brings in some of the best artists in the industry and is designed to celebrate this milestone with all of our supporters. I can speak for our entire team when I say we’re looking forward to the next 10 years of publishing great comics!”

CONTROVERSY IGNITES WILDFIRE IN DECEMBER

Graphic novel’s adventure draws from
real-life GMO debate

WILDFIRE is the new graphic novel from Image Comics/Top Cow exploring the politically charged topic of genetically modified food in a tense, thought-provoking thriller by Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK, APHRODITE IX) and Linda Sejic that leaves it to readers to make up their own minds about the controversy.
Ending hunger is the goal of genetic researchers at megacorporation Biogenesis like Dr. Beth Silva, but an accident during a media demonstration illustrates the unintended consequences that may result from experimenting on an organism’s DNA. Los Angeles is choked with rapidly growing plants, returning the city that is home to 3.8 million people to a state of nature. Dan Miller, a young scientist who worked on Dr. Silva’s project, must race against time to stop the growth, before L.A. is completely obliterated.
Artist Sejic, creator of the popular webcomic Blood Stain, imbues this story with science at its center with heart and humanity with her expressive characterizations while writer Hawkins, who is also the President of Top Cow, balances points of view with character development in writing a story that revolves around a controversial topic.
"When I started researching the polarizing reactions to GMO I quickly discovered that both ends of the argument were exaggerating and making specious claims," said Hawkins. "In writing Wildfire I attempted an even-handed approach to the material explaining both the pros and cons in the background of the character's stories without preaching at anyone."
The trade paperback also includes a “Science Class” feature, in which Hawkins, who has a Master’s degree in physics, lays out the science and debate around genetically modified organisms (GMO).
WILDFIRE will be in comic book stores on December 3 and in bookstores on December 16. It is available for pre-order now. Part two of WILDFIRE will launch in Fall 2015.
WILDFIRE VOLUME 1 by Matt Hawkins and Linda Sejic
  • ISBN 978-1-63215-024-0
  • Diamond Comic order code SEP140690
  • 128 pages, paperback, full color
  • $14.99
  • In comic book stores December 3, bookstores December 16
  • Rated Mature
  • Collects WILDFIRE #1-4
Praise for WILDFIRE:
“This is the genius of Matt Hawkins, to take very real science and extrapolate it into an exciting and very readable narrative, something he’s been carving out quite the niche with Aphrodite IX and Think Tank previously and now with Wildfire. One thing his stories inspire, which not many others do, is a chain reaction of interest in the science laid out on the page with helpful starting points just waiting for you in the Science Class portion at the end.” Chris, Comic Hype

VIZ MEDIA’S HAIKASORU IMPRINT DELIVERS AN ADRENALINE-FUELED RIDE THROUGH THE GRITTY TOKYO UNDERGROUND IN ASURA GIRL

Award Winning Japanese Author Otaro Maijo’s Novel About The Violent And Risqué Life Of A Girl Living On The Edge Released In English For The First Time

San Francisco, CA, October 28, 2014 – VIZ Media’s Haikasoru literary imprint publishes a gripping and strange thriller with the release of Otaro Maijo’s ASURA GIRL on November 18th.

The tense urban drama about the violent and sexually charged life of a Japanese teenage girl in Tokyo is offered in English for the very first time with a translation by Stephen Snyder, a professor of Japanese Studies at Middlebury College in Vermont and a noted translator of numerous works of Japanese fiction.

ASURA GIRL will be available in print from Haikasoru for $14.99 U.S. / $16.99 CAN. An eBook edition also will debut on November 18th for $8.99 (U.S. / CAN) for the Amazon Kindle, Apple’s iBooks Store, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Book Store, the Kobo eBooks Store, and the Google Play store.

Seventeen-year-old Aiko lives a life of casual sex and casual violence, though at heart she remains a schoolgirl with an unrequited crush on her old classmate Yoji Kaneda. Life is about to get harder for Aiko, as a recent fling, Sano, has been kidnapped, and the serial killer Round-and-Round Devil has begun slaughtering children. The youth are rioting in the streets, egged on by the underground Internet bulletin board known as the Voice from Heaven. Expecting that Yoji will come and save her from the madness, Aiko posts a demand for her own murder on Voice of Heaven but will she be left waiting...or worse?

“ASURA GIRL starts with a teen girl living on the edge, and then pushes her off the cliff into a surreal underground on conspiracy, serial murder, apocalyptic fervor, and even love,” says Nick Mamatas, Haikasoru’s tradebooks Editor. “Otaro Maijo combines well-observed depictions of desperate characters with the darkest humor and suspense. ASURA GIRL, largely set in the western suburbs of Tokyo, completely immerses the reader in the surreal and often deadly world Aiko and her friends inhabit. Check out this exhilarating new release from Haikasoru!”

Otaro Maijo is a novelist from Fukui, where most of his stories take place. He debuted with his mystery novel, Kemuri ka tsuchi ka kuimono (Smoke, Soil, or Food), with which he won the Mephisto Prize. He started writing pure literature with Kuma no basho (Place of the Bear), which was nominated for the Mishima Yukio Prize. Then in 2003, he won the Mishima Yukio Prize for Asura Girl.
