Award-winning Comic Creator Expands Jolly Rogue Studios

January 14, 2011: With the recent decision to self-publish Sky Pirates of Valendor, creator and publisher of Jolly Rogue Studios Everett Soares has decided to share his lessons learned and possibly even lessen the burden of being a creator by offering up the talents of his most trusted team. In this endeavor, Soares has partnered with those in the industry who have helped him, trusted him and created with him to establish a one-stop shop to aid creators and publishers to develop their properties. The main goal of Jolly Rogue Studios is to provide guidance, support and resources that enable any creator or publisher in need. The team consists of a writer, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, graphic designer, web designer, editor and publicist. The studio, based on their experience, will market themselves to comic book creators and publishers, gaming companies and novelists.

Jolly Rogue Studios was founded in 2007 for the sole purpose of creating Sky Pirates of Valendor. As a finalist in Small Press Idol that year, Soares went from aspiring comic book writer to published creator virtually overnight. But that didn't come as easily as it sounds. Building his team was the hardest process for Soares. He interviewed and auditioned over 16 artists before he hit jackpot with Brian Brinlee. Then after losing his original inker and colorist, another search began. The end result - Alex Rivera and Jet Amago.

In 2010, Jolly Rogue Studios grew even larger with the valuable addition of George Burnett, website design guru. George gave Sky Pirates of Valendor the amazing presence to the world that it needed. Next to the dazzling art and intriguing storylines, one of the most appealing assets that Sky Pirates of Valendor possesses is its packaging. Working with Soares since the launch of Sky Pirates of Valendor, talented graphic designer Steve Kuster has created a unique look and feel that engages the reader.

To round out the studio, Soares has welcomed longtime friend and grammar guru, Amy Haley to the team for her mad editing skills. And last but not least, a project of this magnitude would not be complete without his partner, wife and promotions goddess, Susan Soares. Together, this happy group of 8 will conquer the world with their extraordinary organization, communication and teamwork skills to bring their clients’ projects to fruition with the same level of magic they’ve experienced for the past four years.

INDIAN COUNTRY TODAY MEDIA NETWORK CONNECTS WITH HOLLYWOOD

First Native American News Website and Media Network Aims To Be Entertainment Community's Go-to Destination

For News and Information About Indigenous Peoples

Launch Celebrated With Poly-Bag Insert in Variety's Golden Globe Issue

(New York, January 14, 2011) – Ray Halbritter, Nation Representative and CEO of the Oneida Indian Nation, announced today that the just-launched Indian Country Today Media Network, the country's first-ever website and media network for news and information about Native American and indigenous peoples, will introduce itself to the entertainment community with a poly-bag insert in Variety's Friday Golden Globe issue.

“With Indian Country Today Media Network we have created a full service media platform that is current, timely, sophisticated, inclusive and widely available," said Halbritter. "As the only national, daily source of essential news and information from Indian country," Halbritter explained, "our goal is to establish Indian Country Today Media Network as the thought leader in the national dialogue on Native American issues.

"Indian Country Today Media Network is a one-stop shopping destination for producers, studios, production companies, writers and actors. We can introduce the entertainment community to a deep pool of potential content, to above and below the line talent, help with casting and locations, and even assist in vetting scripts for historical and culture accuracy. We are the source for connecting the dots between the entertainment industry and Native Americans."

Indian Country Today Media Network evolved from Indian Country Today, the Oneida Indian Nation's award-winning national Native American newspaper.

Indian Country Today Media Network is designed to be the premier portal for Indian Country and the go-to destination for all things indigenous. The various platforms will include www.Indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com and a weekly magazine, This Week From Indian Country Today, which is being distributed to Variety readers in their Golden Globes issue today. Future plans call for the production of syndicated and online radio shows, and a content and advertising network, another first for Native Americans.

The website and magazine will provide essential news and information from Indian Country, featuring new artists and cultural highlights, and give life to the most forceful voices in the national community. The network will also offer online services in the areas of education, business and events ... everything from listings of tribal colleges to the latest pow wows to the array of entertainment projects with Native themes.

Not only is Indian Country Today Media Network a compelling platform for Native Americans, it’s also an opportunity for advertisers to reach one of the fastest growing populations in the US with a projected buying power of over $67 billion in 2010 (The Multicultural Economy 2010, Jeffrey M. Humphreys, University of Georgia, Selig Center for Economic Growth).

An advisory board of leading and prominent members of the Nations—including tribal leaders, educators, entrepreneurs and government officials—will help guide the policy of Indian Country Today Media Network under Op Ed Editor Ray Cook and Washington D.C. Bureau Chief Rob Capriccioso. Already accepting places on the Indian Country Today Media Network board are Dr. Jose Barreiro, director of the Office for Latin America at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian; Mark Trahant, former editor of the editorial page of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and past President of the Native American Journalists Association; Dr. Duane Champagne, professor of sociology and Native American studies at Harvard University, and Professor Carole Goldberg of UCLA Law School, a specialist in Federal Indian Law, Tribal Legal Systems, and an advisor to the Tribal Legal Development Clinic and the Tribal Appellate Court Clinic.

THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU

Genre Bending Film Comes to Dark Sky Films DVD on February 15, 2011

“What a great film – the laughs keep coming and they never let up.”

– The Film Reel

“a strong, fun independent movie that Lovecraft fans will really love.”

– John Allison, RowThree.com

Mankind is threatened with extinction, and it’s up to three geeks and a salty sea captain to prevent disaster in the uproariously frightening THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU. The movie, inspired by the writings of horror icon H.P. Lovecraft, will thrill aficionados when it reaches DVD via Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group on February 15, 2011, with an SRP of $24.98.

Bored office drone Jeff (Kyle Davis, Friday the 13th) is informed by a mysterious elderly professor that he is the last living descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, the revered author of such horror/fantasy classics as The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Re-Animator and the Cthulhu Mythos stories. Jeff is thus the only person who can prevent a race of evil creatures (drawn from Lovecraft’s imagination) from wreaking havoc. The mild-mannered Jeff must protect an ancient relic and prevent it from falling into the clutches of the monsters, which would bring about the release of all-powerful evil known as Cthulhu. Jeff enlists the aid of his co-worker Charlie (screenwriter and producer, Devin McGinn, Bones) and a husky Lovecraft aficionado, Paul (Barak Hardley, Greek), and together they put their slacker lives on hold to embark on an icky and hilarious mission to save the world. Along the way, they get some help from an a sea captain with a fish-boy son – and discover that Lovecraft’s horrific monsters, including a T-shirt-wearing reptile man, are far from fictional.

Part road movie, part buddy movie in the vein of Superbad and The Hangover, THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU is also a supremely creepy tribute to H.P. Lovecraft. No less an authority than Stephen King called him “the 20th century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale.” Lovecraft’s tales of Cthulhu and other stories have spawned movies, books, toys, games, apparel and collectibles.

An Official Selection of the Toronto After Dark Film Fest and the Slamdance Film Festival, THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU has fans and critics alike in its thrall. Todd Brown of TwitchFilm.net called it “a loving ode to both B-grade monster cinema … and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. … so slapdash charming that it’s impossible not to enjoy the ride.” “Funny from start to finish and full of some great creature effects,” said The Film Reel. Director Henry Saine “brings to life some seriously creepy Lovecraftian sea monsters with equal parts blood, slime and slapstick,” wrote Roxxanne Benjamin at Bloody-Disgusting.com. And Toronto Film Scene said, “No one and no thing takes itself seriously in THE LAST LOVECRAFT, and that’s definitely part of its charm … both gory and funny (one of the best combinations!).”

Extras on the DVD include:

Japanese fur suit mascots: A strange amalgam of hometown pride and cost-saving measures

New York, NY - January 11th, 2011 - The adoration of mythical creatures and popular anime characters is nothing new in Japan, but kigurumi, roughly translated as "fur suit mascots," is a growing pastime that is also a marketing tool. An oversized daikon radish, a skiing egg, a bear with an apple for a head, a volcano sticking out its tongue - these furry mascots wander the streets of Japan, and the pages of Edward and John Harrison's Fuzz & Fur.

Created to promote a prefecture or institution by honoring landmarks, local points of interest, regional produce, historical figures, civic institutions, and traditional folklore, municipalities have taken advantage of their citizens' willingness to design costumes and dress up as these characters in a strange amalgam of hometown pride and cost-saving measures.

Being chosen to fill the role of a kigurumi is a chance at local stardom, as the authors explain in their introduction: "The characters have background and personalities. Blogs and websites are made, merchandise produced, and they regularly make appearances at events and on television. Some even release books and have Twitter accounts."

Profiling over 100 kigurumi with photographs and text that explains these mascots' origins, as well as their likes and dislikes, Fuzz & Fur is the definitive compendium of this fascinating subculture, and the perfect companion to Edward and John Harrison's Idle Idol, which documents three-dimensional Japanese mascots.

About the Authors:

Edward Harrison is a designer and illustrator living in Tokyo. He enjoys taking photographs of strange signs and rusty Kanji. When not creating his own characters for clients including Adidas, Redbull and Eurostar he likes to track down and document Japanese mascots.

John Harrison is a designer and illustrator living in London. When not creating websites and animations for clients including Myspace and Nickelodeon he likes to try and avoid injuring himself while cycling and learning Taekwondo.
