Challengers Comics + Conversation, voted Best Comic Book Store in 2009 by Chicago Magazine, will be hosting a 24-hour, 24-Page comic book challenge on Saturday October 3rd, 2009. Fifteen people will be competing to each create a twenty four page comic book in twenty four hours. If enough people complete the endurance test, Challengers will publish a collection of the completed books. Food, drawing surfaces and encouragement are provided for the participants. The store will be open from 11am October 3rd to 11am October 4th. Anyone who would like to come see the mayhem should go to 1845 N. Western Ave, # 2R, Chicago IL 60647.

“It’s certainly going to be an interesting event this year,” quipped Challengers Co- Owner Patrick Brower. “This year we have professionals creating alongside amateurs. Last year 5 artists made it thru all 24 hours but no one was able to complete 24 pages. This time we have accomplished comic professionals Mike Norton (Green Arrow, Booster Gold) and Chris Burnham (X-Men, Nixon’s Pals) competing. Add to that we have some of our own employees participating.” ChallengersComics.com will have a live event blog and podcast, complete with webcam broadcast to let outsiders take a glimpse of the insanity from the safety and comfort of their own homes.

Dinner tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, October 7th and will not be available at the door.

The Harveys, named after the legendary MAD Magazine founding editor and master storyteller Harvey Kurtzman, recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

Guests for dinner and the awards ceremony will enjoy a full Baltimore-style crabcake banquet dinner and a lively show hosted by Scott Kurtz as our Master of Ceremonies. All 21 Harvey Awards will be announced, as well the presentation of the 2009 HERO Initiative Humanitarian Award, honoring Neal Adams.

In addition to receiving numerous industry awards, including induction into the Harvey Awards' Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, Neal Adams is renowned for his social work within the artistic industry. His lobbying for creators' rights, including royalties and the return of artwork, resulted in the modern system of art being returned to the artists who created it, along with better benefits, including sales royalties. His most recent efforts found him collaborating with Joe Kubert and Stan Lee in an effort to force the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland to return Holocaust survivor Dina Babbitt's wartime artwork created during her Nazi captivity. Neal created a 6-page comic book, which he pencilled and inked, highlighting the injustice suffered by Dina. In recognition of his efforts on Dina's behalf, Neal will be receiving the Hero Initiative Humanitarian Award.

"We love the Harveys, and I have been a fan of and admired Neal for many years. We are excited to join the HERO Initiative and honor Neal Adams", said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Continuing the guest-pleasing promotion from years past, a gift bag will be available to all dinner guests. The first 250 attendees will receive a gift bag containing the following: A Batman or DC Universe Illustrated HC by Neal Adams (DC Comics), PvP, vol. 1: At Large TP by Scott Kurtz (Image Comics), A Magnus/Solar/Turok Archive HC (Dark Horse Comics), Darkness Accursed TP (Top Cow Productions), G.I. Studios.

For those who wish to attend the ceremony only, tickets are available for $15, or free for those with a two-day pass to the convention. The hall will be opened for those ticket holders at approximately 9:15pm. Attendees who purchase a ceremony-only ticket are not eligible to receive the gift bag. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IDW Publishing and Hasbro Continue to Push Creative Boundaries

with G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 Comic Book

Special Editon Complete Mirror Image of Self

Available In Stores September 30, 2009

San Diego, CA., September 30, 2009 – IDW Publishing and Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) today announced the release of G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1, a groundbreaking special edition comic in the popular G.I. JOE: COBRA comic book series. Available in stores today, G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 tells the gripping tale of twin brothers drifting apart, framing the story in panels and pages that mirror each other. G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 is written by renowned G.I. JOE scribe Mike Costa, with art by fan-favorite Antonio Fuso.

“When Mike and Antonio first told us what they were planning for this Special, a story about twins that is perfectly symmetrical, it seemed almost impossible to execute,” said Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Senior Global Publishing Manager, Entertainment & Licensing. “My first thought was, ‘If you’re going to cite Watchmen issue #5 as your inspiration, you’d better deliver on a level never seen before.’ G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 is an amazing accomplishment. The IDW team has given readers something to talk about for a long time.”

Spinning out of the red-hot mini series, G.I. JOE: COBRA, G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 follows up on the surprise reveal from COBRA #4 and focuses on masterminds behind this evil organization. The engaging storyline explores the deep conflict between twin brothers and how the feeling of isolation can trigger some dark consequences, all of which is enhanced by the art and design of the comic itself. As each brother tells his story, it is mirrored by the other. The level of detailed design throughout the comic, creating an exact panel to panel mirror, also serves to highlight the very different views of life that each brother has.

“Mike and Antonio have created something unique in the comic book genre,” said Andy Schmidt, G.I. JOE editor for IDW Publishing. “The imagery and complexity of the story are breathtaking. Watching this story come together with such a perfect integration of script, art, color, and lettering has been like watching a baseball pitcher work through a perfect game. I could feel the tension in my chest as we closed in on the final adjustments before we sent it to the printer. I’m looking forward to seeing what G.I. JOE fans and comic fans alike think about the issue.”

G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 ($3.99) will be available in stores on September 30, 2009.

MARK WAID'S
IRREDEEMABLE
NOW ON IPHONE!

Bestselling Issues #1 thru #4 Available Today!

October 1, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA - BOOM! Studios and Comixology proudly announce that they are making Mark Waid's multiple sell-out, bestselling series IRREDEEMABLE available on the iPhone today. Issues #1 through #4 will be immediately available on Comixology's Comics App for $1.99 per issue to iPhone users across the globe.

Coming on the heels of BOOM! Studios' announcement yesterday of Waid's new series INCORRUPTIBLE, this agreement with Comixology makes the early issues of IRREDEEMABLE accessible to more comic fans than ever before.

"In superhero comics, pretty much everyone who's called upon to put on a cape is, at heart, emotionally equipped for the job. I reject that premise," said series writer and BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid. "IRREDEEMABLE is, in a way, my third and most complex chapter on the cost of superheroics - a pulp adventure tale of horror exploring how the lessons we learn about right and wrong as children can become warped and twisted when challenged by the realities of the adult world."

When launched, IRREDEEMABLE #1 sold out the day of release, followed by a second print that quickly sold out soon after. IRREDEEMABLE #2 sold out before the issue even hit store shelves, also accompanied by a second printing that quickly sold out.

This past August, BOOM! Studios released the bestselling IRREDEEMABLE Volume 1 TPB, collecting the first four critically acclaimed issues, priced at $9.99 along with issue #5 for only .99 cents - with both shipping on the same day. Continuing an upward trajectory, IRREDEEMABLE #6 garnered more orders than issue #1. Even so, demand for the latest issue has outpaced expectations with issue #6 quickly going to second print also.

Mark Waid's IRREDEEMABLE has received near unanimous praise for all quarters:

"One of the most intriguing, suspenseful, grab-you-by-the-throat comics I've ever read. I highly recommend picking it up." - Ain't It Cool News

"Mark Waid has served up a powerful little story of love and betrayal "IRREDEEMABLE" may be the last thing you want to call this series." - Newsarama

"The visuals present are nearly tangible. Krause has brought his best work to this book, and Waid makes good use of Krause's talents. Yes, Mark Waid is evil. It makes me a little bit uneasy to say that I hope he continues to be evil, because I sure enjoyed reading it." - Comic Book Resources

"Not just another dismantling of the mythology, IRREDEEMABLE is a masterful tale of the fall of a great heroes" - Project Fanboy

"There really is a tremendous piece of fiction being unveiled here, with precision and fury." - Comic Book Jesus

"This book wants me to just spout out superlatives like fantastic, great, page turner, stunning visuals, wonderful characterization, not a page or panel wasted, so I'm forced to try and find some other way to tell you 2009 best new series is at BOOM! studios and it is called IRREDEEMABLE." - Comics And

"One of the strongest debuts of 2009 this is probably one series you won't want to miss." - Paradox Comics Group

"My local comic shop displays a black shirt with bold white lettering proclaiming 'Mark Waid is Evil.' He's proving it in this book with a devilish grin. Sometimes, as in this case, evil is good." - Jimmy in the Garden

"It's definitely worth a look, especially if you want something that isn't your straight traditional Marvel or DC title." - Comic Vine

"This is an amazing book! I cannot stress how much I truly enjoyed it. Mark Waid has crafted a tale that has captured my attention and left me wanting more. 5/5 - Comics Bulletin

"IRREDEMABLE is an enigmatically twisted tale which grasps your attention from the first page and refuses to let you go!" - Comics Waiting Room
"Anyone who's read superhero comics for any length of time needs to read this!" - Extra Sequential

"When you see this on the shelf of your local comics store, when you see the tick box on your online order form. MAKE SURE YOU PICK THIS UP. Unrelenting in its flow, its shocks, its power and its pure brilliance." - 32 Pages

While now available on the iPhone, all four issues can also be found in the IRREDEEMABLE Volume 1 TPB price at $9.99 featuring cover art by John Cassaday interior art by Peter Krause, carrying a Diamond Order Code of JUN090793 with ISBN: 1-934506-90-7 and ISBN13: 978-1-934506-90-5.

The Comics by comiXology App is available, including over 30 free comics, for $0.99 from the App Store.

"KING OF POP" AND "KING OF ROCK" CENTER STAGE AT PROFILES IN HISTORY'S OCTOBER 8-9, 2009 AUCTION

Michael Jackson's Jackson 5 Costumes and Signed Yearbook; Elvis' Personal, Stage-Used Martin D-28, Karate Gi and Gifted 'TCB' Necklace Added As Featured Items

Calabasas, CA, October 1, 2009 - Profiles in History, the world's leading auctioneer of Hollywood memorabilia has added several fantastic items to their upcoming $5,000,000 auction, taking place October 8-9, 2009. Among them are 11 lots of original stage-worn performance costumes from the early period of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 brothers' career with Motown Records. (*Costumes range from $3,000-$50,000). Also available is a 1976 yearbook signed by Michael to a fellow classmate at Cal Prep School ($*2,000-$3,000). Because there were only 90 students in this exclusive school, very few of these yearbooks are thought to still exist. These items complement Profiles in History's extraordinary Michael Jackson Collection, which includes the iconic illuminating white glove adorned with crystals from his "Suit of Lights" that Jackson wore on stage during The Jackson's Victory Tour (*$60,000-$80,000).

Profiles in History will also present several key Elvis Presley items, including his personal Martin D-28 guitar, used on stage in his final Las Vegas performances (*$60,000-$80,000). Also added to the auction are the karate gi worn and owned by Elvis Presley and used as the model for the McCormick Distillery whiskey decanter (*$25,000-30,000) and an original Elvis Presley gold lightning bolt "TCB" necklace given by Elvis to his karate training partner Wayne Carman (*$18,000-$22,000).

Worldwide bidding begins at 12:00 PM (noon) both days and can be placed either in person, via mail, phone, fax or live on the Internet at: http://www.icollector.com/Hollywood-Auction-37_as14988

MICHAEL JACKSON COSTUMES
The eleven lots represent a rare selection of original stage-worn performance costumes from the early period of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 brothers' careers with Motown Records. The Jackson 5 burst onto the scene in December of 1969 and took America by storm, becoming the first act in recording history to have their first four major label singles reach the top of the charts. Within a year of their debut, the Jackson 5 was among the biggest names in popular music, fueled by the soulful, emotional expression of an 11 year old Michael Jackson.

The Jackson 5 had a distinctive look created by designer Boyd Clopton. The costumes were bold, bright, animated and striking - like The Jackson 5 themselves. The Jackson 5 also had a number of iconic costumes created by International Costume Company beginning in 1972. Many of the costume pieces were intermixed and overlapped from one performance to another so they didn't always wear the same sets together to keep a fresh look, as illustrated by these reference photos. The costumes were worn for promotion, photo shoots and live stage performances. These special, truly one-of-a-kind costumes defined the early explosive and innocent career of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5. Acquired from the private collection of Rick Pikrone's Studio Wardrobe Department, a Hollywood vintage clothing and memorabilia boutique who has supplied clothes for hundreds of movies, television shows and celebrities over the years. Each lot comes with a signed letter of authenticity by Rick Pikrone.

Original Cal Prep School 1976 yearbook signed by Michael Jackson
This is a Cal Prep School yearbook for 1976. It comprises approximately 68 pages and is inscribed and signed by Jackson in black ink at the lower right corner of the front cover, "To a really nice girl. Love, Michael Jackson". This small, exclusive school had only 90 students in the entire school and, of this scarce yearbook publication, very few have survived. Michael is pictured in the class pictures section. This is the only known yearbook signed by Michael Jackson. An incredible piece of early Jackson memorabilia. Includes a LOA from the yearbook's owner and classmate who had Michael sign it in 1976.

Elvis Presley's personal Martin D-28 guitar stage-used in his final Las Vegas performance
This Martin D-28 model guitar (serial number 361827), was used by Elvis in his last Las Vegas stage performances at the Las Vegas Hilton from December 2-12, 1976. In January, 1977 Elvis presented this Model D-28 guitar to his bodyguard, Sam Thompson. The guitar features a blonde wood finish and exhibits some plastic residue on the back of the guitar body resulting from, what Elvis relayed to Thompson, a portion of the belt on his stage jumpsuit melting from the hot stage lights. Following Elvis' death, Thompson sold the guitar in 1978 to The National Enquirer to fund his college education. The National Enquirer presented "The Elvis Guitar" to Cheryl Schmerr who won a national contest of over 60,000 entries in a well-publicized event hosted by the tabloid. The guitar, with original case, is accompanied by a notarized letter signed by Sam Thompson, along with a notarized copy of a letter from Elvis' father, Vernon E. Presley, dated January 4, 1978, attesting that his son gave Thompson the Martin D-28 the previous year while at Graceland. Also comes with a color photograph of Elvis performing on stage with this guitar. Without question, one of the most significant guitars to ever reach the market and accompanied with exceptional provenance.

Karate Gi worn and owned by Elvis Presley, used as the model for the McCormick Distillery whiskey decanter
Original karate gi personally owned by Elvis Presley, in white with red trim and adorned with many embroidered patches, including the chest insignia "TCB" ("Taking Care of Business") with motto "Faith - Spirit - Discipline". The gi includes Elvis' seventh degree black belt, which is embroidered "Elvis Presley". Vernon Presley and Colonel Parker gave this gi to McCormick Distilleries to produce a decanter in Elvis' likeness, as part of a series of celebrity decanters. In 1982, McCormick donated the gi to the Jim Reeves Museum in Nashville, TN where it was displayed until sold in 1996. Comes with copies of several letters of provenance tracing the history of the garment and its use by McCormick, as well as a certificate of authenticity from Jimmy Velvet.

Original Elvis Presley gold lightning bolt "TCB" necklace given by Elvis to his karate training partner Wayne Carman
The "TCB" pendant (Elvis' creed, "Taking Care of Business") features a lightning bolt in gold with attached gold rope chain. Elvis gave this necklace to his friend and Karate training partner, Wayne Carman. In the accompanying LOA, Carman states the necklace was given to him by Elvis in the early 1970s during one of their Karate workouts. Carman continues, "Elvis was a Tiger and I was a Lion in the martial Arts. Initially, Elvis wanted to give me his Lion Claw necklace, because I had admired it one night during a class. I refused his generosity at the time and told him that his friendship was gift enough. The next time I saw him he gave me my T.C.B. necklace. As he gave it to me, he said, 'Wayne, this is an act of friendship, so you can't refuse it!' Carman states he later had the necklace enhanced with diamonds. Also includes a signed hardbound copy of Carman's book, Elvis's Karate Legacy: The Untold Story of Elvis Presley's Faith, Spirit, and Discipline, with lengthy inscription discussing Elvis giving him this necklace.

The story is set in Germany in 1977, when the country is still shattered from the devastation of war and the harsh realities of communism. The country’s youth are fighting back against a repressed nation with their only figurehead for this violent, well dressed revolution, a band, later to be forever lost in time, One Model Nation.

With stunning graphics and Scorsese-esque electricity, One Model Nation captures the arts and politics of an era whose influence can not be measured.

"This is a life's work for me," says C. Allbritton Taylor. "From the Munich Olympics to the heyday of raves, hip hop to state-of-the-art handguns, this era has informed modern culture, fashion, politics, technology, you name it. But this dark time has been a relative German secret which only recently has begun to be revealed, mostly due to the birth of the internet. On a personal level I needed to see this time and place fleshed out into people and events that make sense yet maintain heroic proportions. Donovan spent years researching the multitude of bizarre and overwhelming events in which these people lived their lives and made their noble, everyman decisions. This story needed to be told."

"I have always been fascinated by post-war Germany, the counter-culture revolutionaries and their violent upheaval against the rise of capitalism in a Communist country. The fact that One Model Nation, four musicians who helped to create electronica, was unwittingly pulled into the battle being waged between these two forces makes their story all the more compelling. This is the equivalent to a Syd Barrett German epic," says Donovan Leitch.

1:30-2:30 Spotlight on Stan Sakai
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of "Usagi Yojimbo." Join the celebration as creator Stan Sakai talks about the history of the popular series, the characters who populate Usagi's world, his working process, and more in this panel that fans of all ages will enjoy.

2:30-3:30 Spotlight on Chris Claremont
Chris Claremont has written just about every character around, from Batman to Iron Fist to the Fantastic Four. However, to a legion of comics fans, he is fondly regarded as "the" X-Men writer. He's wowing readers with his take on the X-Men in the current series, "X-Men Forever." Come and get the inside scoop on what's in store for Sabretooth, Kitty, Gambit, Rogue - and perhaps the answer to the seminal question: Why are there no old mutants?

"I am so proud of Roger Ash, who put these panels together for us," said Baltimore Comic-Con promoter Marc Nathan. "Roger has such credibility coming into this role as so many people know him from his fine articles in the comics press. I love the agenda he's developed, especially Comics Rewind: The 70s."

Mr. Belding Is Back In The Building

Star Of “Saved By The Bell” Finds New Home On Innovative Web Show

LOS ANGELES, CA, September 25, 2009 – America’s most beloved high school principal is back in the classroom—but this time, his classroom is on the internet. Dennis Haskins, who played Mr. Belding on the long running television show “Saved By The Bell”, stars in the new web comedy “Acting School Academy” (http://www.actingschoolacademy.com). Haskins plays Marty DeWitt, an out of touch guru, in this dark and hilarious satire on life at a Los Angeles acting school.

Haskins signed onto the project in 2008, after reading the script and meeting with the show’s producers Mo Darwiche and M. Ian Smith. “He nailed the character immediately,” says series writer Kris Sharma. “And he really enjoyed getting to play a fun, flamboyant role. And, of course, has excellent comic timing.”

The eight episode web series is off to a strong start, receiving over 300,000 views on Youtube and hundreds of Facebook fans in its first week. Fans have responded to the show’s irreverent style and a “character universe” that goes far beyond a normal web show.

"We’ve done something entirely new with this project,” says director M. Ian Smith. “In addition to the main episodes, viewers can watch over a hundred ancillary videos. They can even interact with characters on Facebook and Twitter in real time.” Co-writer Michael Mayorga adds “We have video blogs, commercials, a music video, and even a fake sitcom.”

Acting School Academy also has a unique distribution platform---the show is simulcast on Youtube, Koldcast TV, Facebook, and www.ActingSchoolAcademy.com. The show is currently on i-tunes and will be on Tivo’s line-up in the near future. Says producer Mo Darwiche “The tools for creating great content are more accessible than ever for Filmmakers. We feel a web show made by 4 people can be just as funny and well produced as a regular television show.”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASENICK SIMMONS, STAR OF A&E TV’S GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS, TO SIGN AT THE FIRST ANNUAL LONG BEACH COMIC CON!

Be the first to get a signed copy of issue #2 of Incarnate, which debuts at the Long Beach Comic Con and has reviewers such as Ain’t It Cool News calling it “…not your typical horror story, blending action and cool in even helpings.” They cannot die. They feel no pain. They hunger for human flesh. They are Revenants. Centuries ago, the Revenant known as Mot was worshipped as a God. Now, he walks the Earth in search of a purpose to his immortality – but when a secret society discovers a way to kill Revenants, Mot and his fellow immortals must make a choice: Hunt or be hunted. Nick Simmons’ breakout American Manga title reveals a world that challenges even the imagination, planting its tongue firmly in cheek, then biting it off... and swallowing it.

Super Frat Crossover with Dick Masterson!

Los Angeles, CA: Super Frat, the first super-powered, fraternity webcomic has announced the publication of the Super Frat/Dick Masterson Special featuring professional chauvinist, Dick Masterson, author of the best selling book Men are Better Than Women.

“We’re really excited to be working with Dick,” said Super Frat biographer, Tony DiGerolamo. “Wait a minute, that didn’t come out right.”

DiGerolamo and artist, Chris Moreno, are part of a growing trend of webcomic makers that are gaining worldwide acceptance even as regular print comic book sales continue to decline. Unlike paper comics, webcomic websites have online games, character bios, blogs, video and everything else you see on the Internet. In addition, they are available 24/7 instead of just once a month.

“The sky’s the limit on the Web,” says DiGerolamo. “Having a celebrity like Dick Masterson in the comic really jazzed up our hits. It’s amazing what a Dick appearance can do for you. Oh, wait. Dammit!

"We’ve decided to run a contest this week as we’re going to print with the comic," DiGerolamo adds. "We’re looking for a pin up of Dick Masterson with or without the guys from Super Frat. The best pin up we choose will get the artist $50 from Lead Pipe Studios and a free copy of The Super Frat Dick Masterson Special with their pin-up published inside. And, of course, we’ll feature the entries on the site. Get your entries in by October 1, 2009. Post the pin up on your site and send the link to us here: http://superfrat.com/comic/2009/09/24/the-super-frat-dick-masterson-pin-up-contest/ Good luck, bros!"

The Super Frat/Dick Masterson Special will be available October 12th, but fans can pre-order the comic and get is signed by the creative team and Dick Masterson himself. Visit Super Frat at www.superfrat.com and visit Dick Masterson at www.menarebetterthanwomen.com.
