GLASS EYE PIX Launches Genre Audio Program

“TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE”
Website goes live; first episode & promo video available 26 October
Episode ONE: MAN ON THE LEDGE by Joe Maggio starring Vincent D’Onofrio

26 October 2010 — From Glass Eye Pix, the maverick production company responsible for recent independent genre movies THE LAST WINTER, I SELL THE DEAD, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, as well as the forthcoming STAKE LAND and THE INNKEEPERS comes a new venture in the macabre.

Inspired by the classic radio shows of Alfred Hitchcock, Boris Karloff , Peter Lorre, and Orson Welles, TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE is a half hour downloadable audio program featuring notable thespians including Vincent D’Onofrio, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm, Shea Wigham, James Le Gros, Joe Swanberg, and Kevin Corrigan.

Hosted by Glass Eye Pix CEO Larry Fessenden, each thirty-minute episode is written and directed by one of today’s horror auteurs including Joe Maggio (BITTER FEAST)¸ JT Petty (THE BURROWERS, SOFT FOR DIGGING), Graham Reznick (I CAN SEE YOU, THE VIEWER), Paul Solet (GRACE), Ashley Thorpe (THE HAIRY HANDS, SCAYRECROW), Simon Rumley (THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, RED WHITE AND BLUE), Jeff Buhler (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, INSAINTARIUM), and Sarah Langan (Author of THE KEEPER, THE MISSING).

Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride by Fessenden and frequent collaborator Glenn McQuaid (I SELL THE DEAD, effects supervisor on THE ROOST and THE LAST WINTER), this project continues the mission at Glass Eye Pix to celebrate individual voices in the arts and to reassert the broad palette of moods that comprise the horror story.

Says Fessenden: “We thought it would be a great opportunity to get into production, work with some of our favorite people and meet some new ones with a project that was relatively affordable. I’ve always loved radio and audio books. We wanted to try our hand at the format. I’m amazed at what people came up with. Feels pretty special. Like addicts, we’re already looking to Season two.”

McQuaid adds: “Season One has been a tremendous pleasure to work on. Larry and I wanted to gather stories from all walks of life; let each tale stand on it's own merits, as well as complement the entire season. Listeners will be transported far and wide, from distant moons to misty moors, by stories told with a wide range of styles and sensibilities. The challenge for Larry and I, and all the filmmakers we reached out to, was to close our eyes, let go of our visual technique and concentrate purely on sound and performance.”

Never one to skimp on fanfare, Glass Eye has commissioned the wildly talented Gary Pullin to design the logo and website and a unique poster for each tale, evocative of illustrated one sheets from the 60’s or pulp comic covers from Marvel and EC. Each Tuesday for ten weeks a new episode will be unleashed, and with it, another Pullin original. All the graphics will be available for collectors through the TALES merchandise store.

Today, to celebrate the launch of this new Glass Eye Pix venture, a very special video from the notorious animator Voltaire will be released, featuring the TALES theme music by award winning composer Jeff Grace (STAKE LAND, MEEK’S CUTOFF, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL)

Rushed into release for the Halloween Season, the first episodes of TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE will only be available through the website ($1.99 by paypal or credit card), but will soon be downloadable from itunes, Amazon and other outlets. In December, all of Season One will be presented in a deluxe CD package just in time for Christmas. Plans are ongoing to get the show onto the radio where it belongs, and look for the TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE i-pad app very soon.

DARKBRAIN - A NEW PLATFORM FOR INDEPENDENT COMICS SEEKS SUBMISSIONS

October 26, 2010: DarkBrain.com is an edgy web comic studio that produces graphic novels (PG-13 and R-rated) with voice-over narration and music. With over 300 pages of content, all free for readers, DarkBrain has attracted over 22,000 readers in the last two months alone with its recent release of “Church of One” featuring the voice talents of Tabitha Stevens, Raylene and Tony Campos. Now, DarkBrain is looking for some Independent Comics to partner with.

DarkBrain is looking for titles that fit our brand - edgy sci-fi/ fantasy /drama /horror – all with stories that will entice and amaze people. All stories must have an R-rated version that we tone down for our pg-13 readers. Each title that is selected must match the quality of art of our current titles, and be unique and interesting. DarkBrain is looking for a run of issues to appear on DarkBrain.com, and we will add in our voice talent, original music, flash assembly, and comic hosting. Independent Comic producers can have their titles already in print and they will retain all rights to their property.

Through this new partnership, accepted web comic stories will then be exposed to thousands of new users, for free, and include link-outs and promotional information for the Independent Comic partner. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure and to showcase the comics in a new and exciting format, unlike any other web comics. Independent properties with merchandise, printed issues, websites and other web comic versions are welcome as it helps maximize the value of the relationship for the Independent comic owner.

All applicants are expected to have read DarkBrain comics and understand our brand. All partners must have existing art and stories for review of the series being presented - and should be able to sustain a run of 4 or more issues, with approximately 20 pages each issue. We will also accept one-shot issues if the story and art are incredible. The partnership is a shared relationship where the Independent partner funds and provides the art and script and DarkBrain funds and provides the voice, music, flash, script editing and hosting. Both parties share the royalties of the web comics. DarkBrain has only a few slots open for new titles in the 2011 schedule and we are going to be very selective on which partners we choose.

Interested parties can contact AndrewZar@DarkBrain.com.
FORMERLY DECEASED DIRECTOR WILLIAM CASTLE RETURNS

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS

31 Writers, 31 Days = Scare It Forward: The Novel

(Los Angeles, CA – October 26, 2010) - A little thing like being dead has never stopped iconic "King of the Gimmicks" horrormeister William Castle (The House on Haunted Hill; The Tingler) from enjoying Halloween.

castlepixcigar.jpgThis year the man who invented "Fright Breaks" for wussy movie goers is cooking up a new horror novel, Scare It Forward, with 30 writer friends each writing a chapter a day during the month of October. (Bill Castle has done this before; his first horror film, Macabre - starring Jim Backus in a very non-genial role - was based on a novel, "The Marble Forest," written by 13 San Francisco writers.)

With the creepy, genial charm of Hitchcock and the brassy ballyhoo of P.T. Barnum, William Castle freed the flat terrors behind the proscenium arch and turned them loose in the theatre ... from tush buzzing seats to flying skeletons, from $1000 life insurance policies to the "Ghost Viewer," Castle's gimmicks scared and vastly amused a generation of movie goers.

And now he's back. Scare It Forward is set on San Francisco Bay's picturesque Angel Island whose dark history ensnares a newly married couple in an ancient conflict between good and evil. Read if you dare.

Scare It Forward:

http://williamcastle.com/blog/scare-it-forward/

And since he's busy writing, Bill Castle is sending daughter Terry – who he says has a "genetic gift for gimmickry" - to Los Angeles to host a Halloween double-feature for Cinefamily's 3rd Annual Horror fest at The Silent Movie Theatre where, standing in line over 50 years ago, Bill Castle came up with the idea for ... The Tingler (and the world's very first LSD plot device).

William Castle made over forty B movies following a formula for box office success: low-budget chillers geared to the burgeoning boomers. The Tingler, House on Haunted Hill, Thirteen Ghosts, Dr. Sardonicus, Strait-Jacket (scripted by Psycho's Robert Bloch), and Homicidal – which TIME magazine liked better than Psycho. Some called him a master of ballyhoo who shamelessly promoted his pictures with gimmicks like The Coward's Corner and Percepto seat buzzers. Gimmicks? What nonsense.

“I am hooked. If you’ve read and enjoyed other BOOM! titles like IRREDEEMABLE or INCORRUPTIBLE, you should definitely enjoy this.” — COMIC VINE

"Stan Lee has done it again!" — JAZMA ONLINE

"Cornell and Pina create a really intriguing first issue." — COMICS BULLETIN

“Even without Lee’s name, this project would be worth checking out.” — IGN

"Pina’s art is the perfect companion to Cornell’s script and both are more than capable of handling this momentous launch and doing justice to a Stan Lee creation. Bring on issue two!"— POP CULTURE ZOO

"Writer Paul Cornell’s exploration of the experiences of a disabled person rings true and makes for some strong interpersonal moments in the story... Javier Pina seems to take a two-pronged approach to the art for this inaugural issue, and it’s quite effective. The slick, sci-fi elements boast a bold, sharp look, and the action is choreographed quite well. But for the more down-to-earth moments, there’s a lighter touch at play." — EYE ON COMICS

"Javier Pina's art is simply fantastic, filled with clean bold lines, and a rich assortment of facial expressions. He's truly one of those artists who doesn't just DRAW a story, but TELLS a story in picture form. It's great. And Alfred Rockefeller's colors really sell it." — PROJECT FANBOY

"There was nobility there in Cornell's writing... I can say this - I REALLY enjoyed Javier Pina's art. He's a real find... Ok, Stan Lee may not have written the script, but this is a Stan Lee book through and through" —MULTIVERSITY COMICS

"...look at the hero behind the mask -- and you'll find that Soldier Zero is really, truly, finally not like any other character out there" — NEWSARAMA's David Pepose

“…the plotting has a classic feel, but the dialogue is modern and complimenting to the story…What more could you ask for. Be sure to pick up SOLDIER ZERO #1? — Geek Hard

“…someone interested in superheroes but looking for something beyond the two major flavors that typically come in from direct market comics should find a lot to like about this.” — Every Day Is Like Wednesday

“…handled with class…things are off to a very promising start.” — First Comic News

“It’s pretty much everything you could ask for from a superhero title…SOLDIER ZERO #1 is a fantastic series debut that shows great promise” — Hyper Geek

“…what makes this new comic so entertaining for me is that it has a very contemporary feeling….Trautmann seems like a classic Stan Lee hero, just updated to the year 2010.” — Comics Bulletin

“…a good first showing…SOLDIER ZERO is a fun read with a classic tone that moves along at a clipping pace. I’m expecting some really great things from this series…” — Guerrilla Geek

SOLDIER ZERO #1 is written by Paul Cornell (ACTION COMICS, DOCTOR WHO) with art by Javier Pina (SUPERMAN) and ships with seven covers, including A & B covers in a 50/50 split by Trevor Hairsine and Dave Johnson respectively, a 1-in-25 incentive by Phil Noto, 1-in-50 Undressed Trevor Hairsine Variant, 1-in-75 Undressed Dave Johnson Variant, 1-in-150 Undressed Phil Noto Variant and a special 1-in-300 Stan Lee signed variant cover with all new cover art by Kalman Andrasofszky. comiXology, Image Comics and Robert Kirkman Team Up to Debut Digital Comics App for Award Winning THE WALKING DEAD Series

Zombie Lovers Everywhere Can Now Enjoy THE WALKING DEAD Series on All iOS Devices

New York, NY – To commemorate the highly anticipated AMC series premiere of The Walking Dead this Halloween, comiXology has created a dedicated digital comic app of the award-winning series for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch in collaboration with Image Comics and the comic’s creator Robert Kirkman.

The Walking Dead, which won the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series at San Diego Comic Con, recently went day-and-date with its digital version on comiXology-enabled devices and Web reader and is now giving its loyal fan base the ability to enjoy the comic in all of its gory in its own dedicated app. The Walking Dead in digital format is exclusive to the Comics by comiXology platform.

“Robert Kirkman and Image Comics have been great partners of ours and we love to see them continually pushing the envelope with The Walking Dead series,” said David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology. “Through this new app, zombie lovers everywhere will be getting a full dose of their favorite comic on their mobile devices all in one location. We’ve even added all the collected editions.”

The story centers around Rick Grimes, a former police officer who was shot in the line of duty and woke up from a coma after the world had succumbed to the zombie plague. Dazed from months in the hospital, and confused as to why he can't find anyone alive, he begins his journey to find his wife and son.

“Today’s app release will provide fans of The Walking Dead, new and old alike, another way to enjoy this series," said Robert Kirkman. “The Walking Dead app will make the series that much more accessible to the new generation that, more often than not, experiences their entertainment completely digitally. I couldn't be more thrilled to be working with comiXology, on the eve of the debut of the AMC television series, to bring this series in front of a whole new generation of readers.”

The Walking Dead app can be found in the iTunes App Store here and on comics.comixology.com.

The purchases made in The Walking Dead app will also be available in the Comics by comiXology app and online at comics.comixology.com.

About Robert Kirkman

Robert Kirkman is a New York Times bestselling author known for being the cultural zeitgeist of the comic book industry. Following the grassroots success of the self-published Battle Pope (2000), Kirkman caught the eye of Image Comics founding partner Erik Larsen. After several short-term projects (SuperPatriot and TechJacket), he achieved superstar status in 2003 with Invincible and The Walking Dead. During a subsequent stint at Marvel Comics, he gained many new fans with the haunting and hilarious Marvel Zombies. MTV translated Kirkman's Invincible into a motion comic -- one of the first in a growing industry trend. Kirkman's SKYBOUND imprint, under the Image Comics umbrella, is committed to fostering up-and-coming talent in the industry, and all acquisitions are hand-picked by Kirkman himself. Kirkman won the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series for The Walking Dead.
First Issue of SCRATCH9 Sells Out from Ape Entertainment
New All-Ages Title is a Runaway Hit!

(San Diego,CA-October 25, 2010) - Ape Entertainment is pleased to announce that the new all-ages comic Scratch9 #1 written and created by Rob M. Worley and illustrated by Jason T. Kruse, has sold out from the publisher. This sell-out is an auspicious beginning for this break-out comic featuring a runaway cat who can summon any of his nine lives to help get him out of a jam.

"We knew the response for this book was going to be big so we made sure we over-printed it by a pretty large amount," said Ape Entertainment Co-Publisher David Hedgecock. "Needless to say, the response was MUCH greater than anticipated and we owe a big thanks to all the retailers and fans for that."

Though some copies of issue #1 may still be available at the retail level, Ape Entertainment recognizes that the sell-out is inconvenient for fans who are having trouble finding the book. To that end the book is now available on iTunes through the Comics+ app from iVerse Media.

"I've been floored by all the great buzz the book has been getting and pleased that we can keep the book available through the Comics+ app," said Worley. "I know fans are going to love discovering all the aspects of our cat hero across the four-issues of the mini-series."

Fans who don't already have the Comics+ app on their iPad, iPhone or iPod can install it for free it from http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comics/id323397665?mt=8

Download issue #1 today and find out why Katherine Dacey of School Library Journal says, "One of the best new series I discovered at this years’ New York Comic-Con is Scratch9!"
