LOVE AND CAPES ARTIST TO CREATE A COMIC IN 24 HOURS

Thom Zahler, Comics and Friends and Great Lakes Mall Participate in
“24 Hour Comics Day”

On Saturday October 2, Love and Capes creator Thom Zahler will be at Great Lakes Mall, in Mentor, Ohio, creating a 24-page comic book in 24 hours. As part of the national “24 Hour Comics Day", Zahler will be set up on a stage for all to see, working publicly throughout the day and into the next.

Wacom is providing Zahler with a Cintiq tablet which will be hooked up to a big screen television so that everyone can see what he’s working on.

“I think this is going to be a lot of fun,” says Zahler. “At least right now. By hour eighteen I’ll probably be cursing my own name. But I’m glad to let people get a close-up look at the creative process.”

In addition to watching Thom ply his craft, attendees will be able to create their own comic strip (no drawing ability necessary). Thom will also incorporate the audience into his comic creation, in the form of characters as well as other story ideas and details. Prizes will be given away throughout the day, courtesy of Comics & Friends, a comic book shop located in the Great Lakes Mall. Prizes will include comics-related merchandise: movies, video games, action figures and more.

Kick-off is at noon on Saturday, October 2nd. The public will be able to attend during mall hours until 9:00pm on Saturday and then beginning at 11:00am on Sunday. Zahler will also Twitter throughout the day (and night) and post live videos on his site.

ADAM GREEN, KANE HODDER, DANIELLE HARRIS, TONY TODD AND R.A. MIHAILOFF TO APPEAR AT SHOWINGS NATIONWIDE ON OPENING WEEKEND IN SUPPORT OF THE WIDEST RELEASE OF AN UNCUT AND UNCENSORED GENRE FILM IN MORE THAN 25 YEARS

Orland Park (IL) (September 24, 2010) - Dark Sky Films, a division ofMPI Media Group, announced today that in anticipation of the upcoming October 1st release of HATCHET II, the film's cast and director will be making special appearances at midnight and opening weekend showings across the country.

Moviegoers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Tampa and Orlando will be treated to appearances by director Adam Green and the cast of HATCHET II - including horror icons Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN), Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13tH), Tony Todd (CANDYMAN), R.A. Mihailoff (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE). Fans will get a chance to get a meet and greet the cast and participate in a Q&A following the film.

For a complete list of cities where the film is opening and locations where talent is appearing please see below.

Adam Green's HATCHET II will be distributed in theaters across the country under the AMC independent program, beginning midnight Oct 1. Cities where the film will be released include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, St. Louis, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Washington DC, Milwaukee, Tucson, Montreal, and Toronto.

A ferociously fun tribute to the old-school horror sensation slasher movies of the 80's, HATCHET II is the follow-up to the popular original film, which was released theatrically in 2007 and became a sleeper-hit, gaining a wide following on DVD. Just as the 80's had their signature murderous maniacs-HALLOWEEN's Michael Myers of Haddonfield and FRIDAY THE 13th's Jason Voorhees of Camp Crystal Lake- the original HATCHET marked the arrival of the latest and most lethal of the genre's stalking murderers: Victor Crowley, a crazed backwoods killer stalking the bayous of New Orleans.

HATCHET II picks up right where the 2007 original film ends, as Marybeth (Danielle Harris fromHALLOWEEN) escapes from the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder from FRIDAY THE 13th). Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact her revenge against Victor Crowley.

ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP
Instructors: R. SIKORYAK and KRIOTA WILLBERG
4 sessions, Mondays October 18 & 25, Nov. 1 & 8
6:30-9:00 pm
$275 tuition | $250 for MoCCA members

How many times have you said to yourself, “I’d love to make my drawing more realistic—but anatomy is hard!”?

Well, this is your chance to take the most exciting, informative drawing course you’ll ever find, taught by the accomplished teaching team of R. SIKORYAK (RAW magazine, The Daily Show) and KRIOTA WILLBERG (The Swedish Institute). Here’s what the duo says about their workshop:

“A lot can be communicated about a person or animal through their physical appearance. Understanding the way the body looks and works helps illustrators draw their characters so that the artwork conveys personality. This course will teach students how to create real or imaginary characters—in any style—that are consistent and believable.”

Through PowerPoint presentations, in-class exercises, and at-home assignments, students will learn to see and draw the structures and tissues that give the body shape and character. Willberg will—literally!—draw on live models to trace muscle groups and bony landmarks. Sikoryak will demonstrate the application of anatomical understanding to any cartooning style. Students will practice drawing from live models in class and learn to apply the lessons to their own characters.

NOTES:
(1) Students will need to bring drawing materials—charcoal, pencils (colored or not), erasers, paper [11x14 (recommended) or 18 x 24, but not bigger]. No markers, please. Students should work with inexpensive materials they are most comfortable with. The class isn't about creating finished drawings as much as it is about sketching.

(2) As this is a life-drawing class, nude models will be employed.

R. SIKORYAK is the author of the recently released Masterpiece Comics. His cartoons and parodies have appeared in RAW, Drawn and Quarterly, Nickelodeon Magazine, the New Yorker, and MAD, among many other publications; on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and in The Daily Show Presents America (The Book); and in Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of the Planet Earth. He's drawn for Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. Sikoryak is in the speakers program of the New York Council of the Humanities and teaches in the illustration department at Parsons School of Design. Since 1997, he has presented his cartoon slide show series, Carousel, around the United States and Canada.

KRIOTA WILLBERG teaches anatomy for cartoonists and illustrators at The Center For Cartoon Studies, anatomy in the dance department of Marymount Manhattan College, pathology and massage therapy at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences, and has taught at Bard College, NYU, and The School of Visual Arts. She has studied personal training and exercise. Willberg is an interdisciplinary artist, a lecturer and blogger about film and medicine (thecinematologist.blogspot.com), and a filmmaker. Her films include the dance mockumentary, The Bentfootes (2007).

HAND ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS
INSTRUCTORS: R. SIKORYAK and KRIOTA WILLBERG
1 session: MONDAY, November 15
6:30-9:00 PM
$70 tuition | $60 for MoCCA members
[Plus: 25% DISCOUNT for students who have taken the ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP either this semester or in spring 2010: $52.50|$45]

An introduction to one of the trickiest parts of the body to draw, from the teachers of MoCCA’s popular ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP.

Hands are incredibly complex, articulated structures, containing more than twenty-seven bones and innumerable joints. No wonder they’re so hard to draw!

Learn about hands in a way that will let you adapt that knowledge to drawing hands on your characters in your own cartooning style.

This class introduces a series of anatomical principles and aesthetic concepts to help you design “hands” that fit naturally onto the body of a cartoon character and also convey believable hand functionality. We’ll also draw in class from model skeletons and live hand models.

[See bios of Sikoryak and Willberg in ANATOMY FOR CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP listing above.]

DUEL WITH DESTINY
FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG #1 roars onto shelves this December

Berkeley, CA - 23 September 2010 - Life's hard enough when you're a human. But what if you're half human and half dragon?!

Teenager Duncan Rosenblatt has a human mother and a giant, city-stomping, kaiju father. He also has all the worries of a normal high schooler, from bullies to girls to fitting in. His adventures continue on December 1, 2010, with the release of FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG #1 from Image Comics.

Written by Phil Hester and drawn by Andy Kuhn, FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG picks up where FIREBREATHER VOL. 2 left off: Duncan deals with not only losing his father but with keeping his father's death a secret, even from his mother. But Duncan's mysterious extended family may not let him keep that secret -- or his life -- much longer.

"It feels great to be back in the saddle on Firebreather.” says Hester. “There's a great deal of Duncan's story left to tell, and we're thrilled that Image has given us free reign to do so. Andy Kuhn is pulling out all the stops on the art and Bill Crabtree is doing the best work of his career on colors. I can't wait for you all to see this."

"Phil Hester is one of the best writers in comics,” adds Kuhn, “and I'm proud to be drawing the next chapter in the Firebreather saga. Every script I get is better than the last. Strap yourselves in, this is gonna be one helluva ride!"

FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG #1 (of 4) (OCT100443), a 32-page full-color comic book for $3.99, will be in stores December 1, 2010. FIREBREATHER VOL. 1: GROWING PAINS ($14.99, APR090360) and FIREBREATHER VOL. 2: ALL THE BEST HEROES ARE ORPHANS ($16.99, AUG082239) are available now. Firebreather joins forces with Ron Marz's Dragon Prince in FIREBREATHER VS. DRAGON PRINCE, a 120-page full-color one shot for $7.99 that will be in stores November 17, 2010. Finally, don't miss the FIREBREATHER movie, premiering on Cartoon Network this November!

Ian Churchill brings his all new series MARINEMAN to Image Comics in December

Berkeley, CA - 23 September 2010 - This December will see the release of an all-new Image Comics series chronicling the adventures of a new defender of the oceanic frontier -- MARINEMAN!

Churchill explains, "When I created MARINEMAN over thirty years ago, I always dreamt that one day I would be lucky enough to write and draw comic books professionally and get the opportunity to bring MARINEMAN to as wide an audience as possible. Ready Your Droids for the ComicBookBin App for Google Android

No geek is left behind with ComicBookBin 1.0 for Android!

CALGARY, Alberta, (September 22, 2010) – If metrosexuals use iPhones and dudes Palm Pres, who uses Google Android? Geeks of course and they are usually upfront about their comic book collecting unlike metrosexuals who keep their love of comics in the closet and dudes who don’t read as many comics because they’re busy practicing tricks on their skateboards. Well, geeks now have something to rejoice with ComicBookBin for Android.

ComicBookBin for Android is similar to the same app enjoyed by metrosexuals and dudes but created raw just for geeks. “In ComicBookBin for Android,” says developer Hervé St-Louis, “we’ve done away with that clean polished Apple/Palm look and went straight for the groovy white text on black background enjoyed by real geeks. We didn’t even try to root some blur or sense in the whole thing. It’s pure unlocked Android love.”

The app has the classic utility features all comic book collectors expect from a ComicBookBin app. It’s got the newsreader, with access to over 12,000 articles from the Comic Book Bin Web site. It’s got the store locator that actually works unlike those other wannabe comic book apps. Of course, you can search for stores in other cities and find more details about them such as their location on Google Map, phone numbers, addresses and Web sites, if available.

Finally, geeks have access to the most comprehensive comic book convention calendar through ComicBookBin. Geeks stuck on Android 1.6 to 2.1 can even add events to their Gmail calendar app. Yeah, baby, here’s a first! An app that offers more features for non Froyo users! But Android 2.2 geeks shouldn’t worry too much. They know how it is with Froyo. It’s groundbreaking, so Google managed to break a few things in the upgrade! We’ll fix it as soon as Google makes its unpublished APIs for the 2.2 calendar app, public or we’ll patch something first.

GETTING IN THE SPIRIT
Image Comics gets ready for the holiday season with superheroes, Santa Claus, and alien invasions!

Berkeley, CA - 22 September 2010 - This December, Image Comics gets festive with the release of DYNAMO 5 HOLIDAY SPECIAL 2010 and SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS!

DYNAMO 5 for the Holidays!

It's the holiday season in Tower City, but the Dynamo 5 kids don't get any time off. They're busy tracking down one of Captain Dynamo's old enemies, who has escaped from prison. But is there more to this simple escape than meets the eye?

Written by Jay Faerber, with art by Marcio Takara and a cover by Mahmud A. Asrar and Ron Riley, DYNAMO 5 HOLIDAY SPECIAL 2010 will be in stores December 22, 2010. CHEW artist Rob Guillory provided a special incentive cover as well.

"The Dynamo 5 Holiday Special gives us our first look at how Tower City's resident superheroes celebrate the holidays," explains Faerber. "The kids have to juggle their 'real' families along with their superhero family -- plus they have to make time to track down an old enemy who escaped from prison. In addition to telling a complete stand-alone story, this Holiday Special also lays the groundwork for the big event coming to Dynamo 5 in 2011."

Father Christmas Faces Off Against Space Invaders!

For centuries, one man has patrolled the night, rewarding the good and punishing the wicked, protecting children from all manner of dangers. So, when a mysterious canister falls from the sky and crash lands in the peaceful English countryside, only Father Christmas can put an end to the threat of invasion from the Red Planet!

SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS is a four-issue miniseries written by Benito Cereno and drawn by James Harren with covers by Nate Bellegarde. The first issue does on sale December 1, 2010

According to Cereno, "SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS takes its inspiration from the high concept of the famously terrible B-movie SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS. Rather than being an adaptation or remake, it uses the basic idea as a springboard for an epic battle that explores the way our culture has looked at the Christmas gift-giver and invaders from space over the course of three centuries. Whatever your favorite bit of the Santa mythology or whatever your preferred form of Martian, chances are good you will see it within the pages of this mini-series!"

Join Image Comics in the holiday spirit with DYNAMO 5 HOLIDAY SPECIAL 2010 (OCT100456; INCV: OCT100457), a 32-page full-color comic book for $3.99 that will be available December 22, 2010, and SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS #1 (of 4) (OCT100462), a 32-page full-color comic book for $3.50 that will be in stores December 1, 2010.

Chase Sequence Releases First Print Collection of Its Popular Movie-Themed Webcomic Multiplex

Multiplex: Enjoy Your Show Ushers in a New Breed of Movie Geek Humor

Chicago, Illinois (September 22, 2010) — Chase Sequence is thrilled to announce the release of its first book collection of the hit movie-themed comic strip Multiplex. Multiplex: Enjoy Your Show (224 pages, TPB, $19.95) collects the first 102 strips from the Multiplex archives, over 30 bonus comics, character bios, selected guest strips, and features an all-new, exclusive 12-page prequel story set on opening night of Star Wars: Episode III — The Revenge of the Sith. The book is now available directly from the publisher. Retailers can order the book from its distributor, Small Press United (a division of IPG) at IPGbook.com.

Multiplex combines a unique blend of comedy, drama, and real-world film commentary and criticism, centering on the cynical movie snob Jason and his schlock-loving BFF Kurt, two employees at the Multiplex 10 Cinemas. Together, they're a Film Studies class that was dropped on its head as a baby. As Newsarama's Chris Arrant put it, "Think Clerks in a movie theatre."

Having run continuously for five years, Multiplex has evolved considerably since it launched. The strip has matured, dragging the characters reluctantly into something sort of like adulthood, if you cock your head and squint at it a little. By revisiting these early years with bonus comics to flesh out the story, sort of like an extended director's cut, Multiplex: Enjoy Your Show is not only a great treasury for existing fans, but the perfect introduction to Multiplex for new readers, as well.

About the Author

Gordon McAlpin lives in Chicago with his cat Punk. In his twenties, he watched over a dozen movies a week. Gordon has written movie reviews, co-hosted a movie podcast, and edited a movie news blog, but now he just writes and draws Multiplex. While he has never worked at a movie theater, he has had several equally terrible jobs.

About Multiplex

Multiplex is an online comic strip published by Chase Sequence Co. about the movie-loving and customer-weary staff of the Multiplex 10 Cinemas, as they try to survive each work day. Multiplex has run continuously since July 2005 and currently reaches more than 55,000 unique readers per month, making it the most popular movie-themed webcomic. Multiplex updates twice a week at www.multiplexcomic.com.

Ninth Circuit Strikes Down Oregon Censorship Law!
CBLDF & Dark Horse Cheer Free Speech Victory!

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Dark Horse Comics applaud a decision issued by United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit holding that two Oregon statutes that criminalize distributing sex education and other non-obscene materials to minors are unconstitutional in violation of the First Amendment. The State of Oregon argued that the statutes applied only to “hardcore pornography,” but the Ninth Circuit found that they applied to much more, including Kentaro Miura’s manga “Berserk,” Judy Blume’s “Forever,” and Margaret Atwood’s “A Handmaid’s Tale.” The plaintiffs did not challenge Oregon’s existing law making it a crime to contact a minor with the intent of having sexual contact. CBLDF and Dark Horse were among the plaintiff group challenging the statutes.

Mike Richardson, publisher of plaintiff Dark Horse comics says, "We were extremely happy to see these statutes overturned. Our Constitution's First Amendment was intended to keep the hands of the government off the printing presses of America. Creators everywhere can breath a sigh of relief that these laws, open to interpretation and likely to be abused, have been put down."

“This is an important victory permitting readers − both younger and older − to obtain what they are constitutionally entitled to read,” said Michael Powell of plaintiff Powell’s Books. “It is also a victory for booksellers who do not want to ask 13-year-olds for identification or risk going to jail for selling a Judy Blume book.”

“The court did the right thing by rejecting the State’s promise that it wouldn’t prosecute the plaintiffs under these statutes,” said P.K. Runkles-Pearson, counsel for plaintiffs. “This decision allows educators to provide straightforward health information to minors without worrying that the State will prosecute if it disagrees with them.”

The decision was issued in a lawsuit brought by Powell’s Books, Inc.; Annie Bloom’s Books; Dark Horse Comics, Inc.; Colette’s Good Food + Hungry Minds, LLC; Pauline Springs Books; St. John’s Booksellers, LLC; American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression; Association of American Publishers, Inc.; Freedom to Read Foundation, Inc.; Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Candace Morgan, Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette, Inc.; Cascade AIDS Project and the ACLU of Oregon.

Plaintiffs were represented by Michael A. Bamberger of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, New York, general counsel to Media Coalition, and P.K. Runkles-Pearson of Stoel Rives LLP, Portland, Oregon, a cooperating attorney for the ACLU of Oregon.

The full text of the decision can be read at www.cbldf.org

Ape Explodes With Dynamite

Ape Entertainment to release Black Dynamite comic

September 20, 2010: Released in 2009, and already a cult smash, Black Dynamite is about to receive the comic book treatment from the folks at Ars Nova and Ape Entertainment. Set to appear in the one-shot, Black Dynamite: Slave Island, everyone’s favorite blaxploitation sensation will bring his kung-fu skills to the sequential page as he seeks to put an end to a mysterious island… where slavery still exists.

“Fans of the film will feel right at home with the comic,” states Ape Entertainment founder and co-publisher Brent E. Erwin. “It has all of the elements that made the movie a cultural phenomenon, and Black Dynamite himself is still as much of a bad dude on the page as he is on the screen.”

Directed by Scott Sanders, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 and stars Michael Jai White as Black Dynamite, a gun-toting, nunchuck-wielding, ladies man willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

“Although written for film, Black Dynamite was always meant to move beyond the camera,” continues Sanders. “As a medium, comic books seemed like such a logical step in Black Dynamite’s development as a character, and what better way to start than having him bring down the infamous Slave Island.”

Black Dynamite: Slave Island is based on a story by Michael Jai White, Byron Minns and Scott Sanders. Written by Brian Ash with pencils by Jun Lofamia, the 48-page one-shot is due in stores in early 2011.

As part of Ape Entertainment’s New York Comic Con festivities, the company will be holding a screening of Black Dynamite at the convention center on Saturday October 9th from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. A question and answer session will precede the screening and will feature Sanders, Black Dynamite composer/editor Adrian “AJ” Younge, and Wax Poetics Editor and founder Andre Torres. The Q&A will also feature a first look at clips from the upcoming Black Dynamite: The Animated Series on [adult swim]. All attendees will receive a limited edition copy of a Black Dynamite: Slave Island preview book featuring a cover by Ed Laroche.
