Image Comics announces exciting new projects at WonderCon 2010

Berkeley, CA - 3 April 2010 - Image Comics took its show on the road -- across the Bay that is -- to make big announcements at its hometown show, WonderCon. On Saturday, THE IMAGE COMICS SHOW presented a slew of ongoing and upcoming projects from Erik Larsen, Frank Cho, Jonathan Ross, men of action Joe Casey and Steve Seagle, and Richard Starkings.

EMPEROR LARSEN
Erik Larsen discussed the upcoming story arc for SAVAGE DRAGON, entitled EMPEROR DRAGON. Following the events of the DRAGON WAR, Savage Dragon remains his evil self, Emperor Kurr. Without the opposition to stop him, the ex-cop, ex-superhero makes a play to conquer the planet.

Also announced: SAVAGE DRAGON FUNNIES, a 12-issue series of backup stories that starts with May's SAVAGE DRAGON #160. A select and talented group of artists contributed short tales representing their take on the Dragonverse. Creators include Michel Fiffe, Andrew Dimitt, Kiel West, Delsante and Freire, Ulises Farinas, Chris Sanderson, Conoro Hughes, Kat Roberts, Hyendo Park, Pedro Camargo, Jason Thibodeaux, and Joe Keatinge and Deep 6 Studio.

FIFTY ON CHO
Frank Cho reported on 50 GIRLS 50, an all-new miniseries masterminded by Cho and co-writer Doug Murray (THE 'NAM). Newcomer Alex Medellin, the winner of a talent search curated by Cho and Murray, is illustrating based on designs by Cho. The series will be launching in August.

DOWNE WITH CASEY
Joe Casey announced his new one-shot, created with Chris Burnham: OFFICER DOWNE. A lone Badass With A Badge takes on the scourge of the criminal underworld, and this is one cop that'll keep coming back for more...even from beyond the grave! OFFICER DOWNE will be available in July.

ON A CRUSADE WITH SEAGLE
Steve Seagle announced the collection of THE CRUSADES, his incredible tale of an enigmatic 11th century Crusader that renders terrible justice on 21st century San Francisco. This remastered volume collects - for the first time - the macabre Vertigo series created by Seagle and artist Kelley Jones. THE CRUSADES vol. 1, collecting THE CRUSADES: URBAN DECREE and issues #1-9, will be available in July.

Also announced: FRANKIE STEIN, an adorable full-color oversized children's book drawn by Marco Cinello (SOUL KISS). Frankie Stein is just another kid, growing up the way kids do. Except Frankie has green skin, bolts in his neck, and lives in a giant castle. FRANKIE STEIN will be available Fall 2010.

ROSS ON AMERICAN TURF
Jonathan Ross made a rare American appearance and discussed his new five-issue miniseries TURF, which is drawn by Tommy Lee Edwards. Ross discussed the transition from eternally popular UK television host and long-time comics fan to comics creator. Issue #1 is available April 7, but a convention exclusive variant is available at the Image Comics booth, #407.

STARKINGS MAKES A MOVE TO THE SCREEN
Richard Starkings had huge news for the crowd: ELEPHANTMEN has been optioned for a movie! He also discussed ELEPHANTMEN #25, a special issue in which the story is told by a series of guest artists in astonishing splash pages. Artists include Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN), Tim Sale (BATMAN: LONG HALLOWEEN), Pia Guerra (Y: THE LAST MAN), and more! ELEPHANTMEN #25 will be available later in April.

Victor Drai
And Partners Jesse and Cy Waits
Bring A Taste of Vegas to LA With

Drai's Hollywood
at the New W Hollywood Hotel

Los Angeles, CA. - With a history of successes that has put them into a category of their own, the triumvirate of nightlife entrepreneur Victor Drai and partners Jesse and Cy Waits are now bringing a highly anticipated top-of-the-line nightlife destination to the rooftop of the W Hollywood Hotel, Drai's Hollywood.

Situated on the famous corner at Hollywood and Vine - the cradle of the Hollywood nightlife resurgence - Drai's Hollywood (www.draishollywood.com) crowns the new W Hollywood Hotel and boasts over 20,000 square feet of unparalleled views of the Hollywood Hills, the historic Capitol Records building and the Hollywood sign. The club provides multiple environments to ensure guest comfort and fun. A large lounge is lined with banquettes, backed with rich red velvet tiles reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour. Mirrored, ceiling-high columns punctuate the banquets evoking a modern, chic club vibe and cast rays of reflected light. Opposite the banquettes, one full wall of the space looks out onto Hollywood through floor-to-ceiling windows with some of the most stunning city views anywhere. The room opens up into a dance space with a state-of-the-art DJ booth framed by a massive, carved wooden picture frame looking out onto the floor.

A "Drai's style" restaurant seating approximately 120 guests and featuring the flavors of Chef Claude Segal sits comfortably nestled between the indoor lounge area and the open air rooftop pool/patio area. Guests can choose to eat either under a roof or under the sky. The pool patio resembles a penthouse roof garden, both sides boasting custom cabanas. On one side of the pool is a row of flat-topped cabanas that are lightly furnished with low couches and slender wood frames holding up light white privacy curtains. On the other side, raised up a few steps from the pool level, is a row of covered daybeds, fully appointed with Moroccan-style inlaid wooden tables and cabinets, stained wicker seats, comfortable red-cushioned couches, large mirrors and flat screen TVs all surround by heavier white drapes. At the far end of the pool, situated up a flight of stairs above an outdoor poolside bar, is a set of four larger, very VIP cabanas that overlook the entire rooftop area from the most private of perches. In addition to the first-rate architectural design of Drai's new rooftop aerie, there's an ultra exclusive lounge on the ground floor of the hotel for members and invitation only events. With a price tag upwards of $15 million, there isn't another space in Los Angeles that can offer the level of luxury, comfort and visual dazzle found in this new crown jewel of nightlife.

Drai, the French entrepreneur, film producer and lifestyle producer who transformed Las Vegas nightlife with the Waits twins, is no stranger to the Hollywood entertainment scene. 17 years ago, Drai was transforming his own Hollywood life into a brand with his successful restaurant, Drai's on La Cienega. His success as a movie producer (Woman in Red, The Man with One Red Shoe, the Weekend at Bernies series) brought in his A-List friends and quickly established himself as an arbiter of quality dining and the social scene, making Drai's the place to go in the early and mid 90's.

Drai's move to Vegas in 1997 continued his string of successes, first with Drai's on the Strip, a transplant of his Hollywood eatery to a whole new location and level of revelry. The restaurant soon extended its hours giving birth to Drai's After Hours, which became the first after-hours lounge/club open to the public in the city renowned for its privacy. But as numerous other after-hours venues of its similarity have come and gone, Drai's legendary haunt has remained a nightlife staple and will celebrate a decade of excellence this year.

Drai's Vegas club success has been due to both his unique understanding of the lives of his clientele and his ability to harness the exploding talents of the Waits twins. The brothers, who grew up in Hawaii and Southern California, cut their club teeth managing and growing at various Las Vegas venues, with Cy blossoming into a talented leader at Tabu Ultra Lounge at MGM Grand and Jesse polishing his skills at Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay.

The Waits twins quickly established themselves as experts, drawing and catering to a roster of celebrity and taste-maker guests, and just as quickly drew the attention of Drai. The three joined forces as Drai was preparing to add what would become to be known as Tryst to his hand with his new partnership with billionaire casino mogul Steve Wynn. Tryst became a nightlife home run, rising to the upper echelon in its four years of existence.

Drai and the Waits brothers followed Tryst with Encore Las Vegas mega-club XS, their most successful venture to date that's arguably become the most popular and most profitable nightclub in the world in a year of existence. XS has received numerous accolades, most recently winning both Best Nightclub and Best Mega Club for the year 2009. The unparalleled success of XS, Tryst and Drai's After Hours has positioned the trio among the most successful nightclub entrepreneurs in the world, an achievement that was highlighted when they earned the distinguished Operators of the Year award at the 2009 Annual Nightclub & Bar Magazine convention.

Now Drai and the Waits twins are working with Starwood Hotels and their W Brand to bring something first class to Hollywood; as well as bringing their time-tested charms and unique appreciation of the rich and famous to the place that put the 'me' in fame - Hollywood.

What a Sexy Witch? Try WITCHBLADE

Two of Top Cow Productions talent flying in to Phoenix ComiCon

Phoenix, AZ March 28, 2010: Brian Haberlin and Eric Basaldua while at Top Cow Productions worked on the popular Witchblade and are now attending Phoenix Comicon's May 2010 show.

Eric Basaldua began his career at Top Cow Productions in 2000 under the direct tutelage of founder, Marc Silvestri. His early credits include Magdalena, Witchblade/Wolverine, and Tomb Raider. Basaldua often works very closely with Silvestri, stepping in to provide art for Hunter-Killer #7 and #8 as well as assisting Silvestri on character designs for the recently announced partnership with Dynamite Entertainment. Basaldua's most recent work can be seen in Darkness Level 3, written by Paul Jenkins & David Wohl and in the first ever Witchblade Annual. Basaldua is best known for his sexy and voluptuously drawn women and is sometimes credited as Ebas.

"I know Eric is a big fan of Jessica Biel and I'm interested in finding out if that has inspired his drawing of women." said Anabel Martinez, Marketing Director for Phoenix Comicon.

Brian Haberlin is the former Vice President of Creative Affairs at Top Cow Productions. He was responsible for the entire creative direction of the highly successful comic company. While there he co-created the extremely popular Witchblade comic character. That series held the number one “hot comic” position for more than a year, as ranked by Wizard Guide to Comics. The Witchblade live-action television series is currently running on TNT.

Matt Solberg, Convention Director, said, "I saw a bit of Brian Haberlin's computer techniques on a TV show called How'd They Do That? It will be great to see his talent in person."

Prior to Witchblade, Haberlin was the colorist for the monthly issues of Todd McFarlane's Spawn series. Haberlin has since taken over some of the art chores on the book. He has also co-created many comic titles under his Avalon Studios such as Stone, The Wicked, Hellcop, Houdini: The Man from Beyond, Jinn, Aria, M-Rex, Area 52, and Athena Inc.

Phoenix ComiCon is the signature pop culture event of the southwest, presenting guests and programming for hobbyists and fans by attracting the top segments of the comics, anime, sci-fi, film, TV, and gaming industries. Entering its ninth year, Phoenix ComiCon is expected to draw over 10,000+ attendees to its May 27-30, 2010 convention held at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency located in downtown Phoenix.

UCLA Live Presents Titans of the Graphic Novel April 23

‘American Splendor’ creator Harvey Pekar and ‘Dykes to Watch Out For’ creator Alison Bechdel share the Royce Hall stage

LOS ANGELES — UCLA Live brings together two artists who make searing use of the comics as a confessional medium with ‘Titans of the Graphic Novel’ at Royce Hall Friday April 23 at 8 p.m.—offering a unique evening of spoken word from American Splendor creator Harvey Pekar and Alison Bechdel, creator of “Dykes to Watch Out For” and acclaimed author of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic.

Long before reality television and “shows about nothing,” Harvey Pekar began penning and self-publishing American Splendor, which illustrated his less-than-splendid life as a file clerk in Cleveland’s VA Hospital and garnered a large and loyal cult following.

Pekar’s long-running autobiographical series elevated mundane day-to-day existence into high art and elevated its now 70-year-old author to cult-icon status. The critically acclaimed, Academy Award-nominated (best adapted screenplay) American Splendor film based on Pekar’s work and life was released in 2003.

At the podium Pekar is mundane-yet-poetic, honest and profound and shares his unique views in a not-to-be-missed multimedia presentation.

Pekar is currently producing online strip The Pekar Project for pop-culture site Smith Magazine (www.smithmag.com).

Alison Bechdel joins Pekar to take aim at controversial topics of the day and discuss how her work redefines race and gender roles.

Hailed by Ms. Magazine as creating "one of the preeminent oeuvres in the comic genre, period," Bechdel’s “Dykes to Watch Out For” is syndicated in more 50 alternative newspapers and publications, translated into many languages and collected into a book series with more than 250,000 copies in print.

Time Magazine named Bechdel’s first full-length graphic novel Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic the No. 1 book of 2006. In this deeply personal story of Bechdel’s relationship with her father Publishers Weekly says the author “…meditates on how prolonged untruth can become its own reality. She's made a story that's quiet, dignified and not easy to put down.”

Four of Bechdel’s books have won Lambda Awards for humor, including the Lambda Literary Award in the biography/autobiography category for The Indelible Alison Bechdel. She's also won two Vice Versa Awards for Excellence in the Gay and Lesbian Press.

Bechdel's work has also appeared in Ms., The Village Voice, The Advocate, Out, Gay Comics, and many other comic books, 'zines, and anthologies.

Single tickets are on sale now. UCLA Live at Royce Hall, 340 Royce Drive, Westwood. Friday, April 23 at 8 p.m. $24/36/48 ($15 UCLA students.) (310) 825-2101, www.uclalive.org.

Harvey Pekar, known to a large and loyal cult following as “the master of the mundane” thanks to his 30+ years producing the autobiographical comic series turned critically acclaimed film American Splendor, brings his eclectically profound and idiosyncratic look at life and art to the stage alongside outspoken “Dykes to Watch Out For” creator Alison Bechdel whose graphic-novel memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic was named the No. 1 book of 2006 by Time Magazine.
