EVAN DORKIN INVITES YOU TO HOUSE OF FUN!
November 30, MILWAUKIE, OR—With Dark Horse Presents continually adding new and awesome stories to the lineup, Evan Dorkin wants to tell you about House of Fun!
“While we were working on the Milk and Cheese collection with Scott Allie and Daniel Chabon, I pitched the idea to do new material for Dark Horse so I could revive some of my old characters. This dovetailed nicely with the revival of Dark Horse Presents, since most of my humor comics originally ran in various anthologies including several from DHC like Instant Piano, Deadline USA, and the first run of Dark Horse Presents.
“The idea was to bring back as many of my old characters and concepts from Milk and Cheese and Dork as possible, grouping it all under the new House of Fun name. I decided not to use Dork as a catchall title for these comics. I got sick of the name a long time ago and this relaunch felt a good opportunity to finally retire it.
“So, what I’m doing is twenty-four pages of comics to be spread over three issues of DHP, with each eight-page anchored by a new Milk and Cheese strip. The other features will include a new Murder Family episode; several pages of Fun gag strips, as well as the return of The Eltingville Comic Book, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Role-Playing Club. If all goes according to plan I’ll also be doing a one-page Fisher-Price Theater adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 and a short Devil Puppet story.
“Also, the comics will all be colored by my longtime collaborator and long-suffering wife, Sarah Dyer.
“This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now. The last issue of Dork came out in 2006 and it’s been even longer since I worked on an Eltingville or Murder Family strip. I’m excited to be working on my own stuff again, I’m having a lot of fun making these comics, and I hope folks will have fun reading them. If not they can go suck an egg.”
House of Fun will premiere in Dark Horse Presents #10, on sale March 21, 2011.

GREAT STORIES FROM AMERICA'S EARLIEST BLACK WRITERS

Eureka Productions is pleased to announce the release of
African-American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22, the newest volume in the Graphic Classics® series of comics adaptations of great literature.

African-American Classics presents comics adaptations of great stories and poems by America’s earliest black authors, illustrated by contemporary black artists. The volume is co-edited by Tom Pomplun and Lance Tooks, a longtime contributing artist to the series. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to expose young readers of all races to a group of brilliant American authors who’ve never been adapted into the comics medium, interpreted by some of our industry’s top talent,” states Lance.

This volume presents stories including “Two Americans” by Florence Lewis Bentley, “The Goophered Grapevine” by Charles W. Chesnutt, “Becky” by Jean Toomer, two short plays by Zora Neale Hurston, and six more tales of humor and tragedy. Also featured are graphic interpretations of eleven poems, including Langston Hughes’ “The Negro,” Claude McKay’s “America,” and Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “Sympathy.”

The comics adaptations and illustrations are by some of the best black talent in the comics and illustration fields today, including Kyle Baker, Alex Simmons, Christopher Priest, Afua Richardson, Trevor Von Eeden, Jeremy Love and Milton Knight.

The
Graphic Classics series presents the works of great authors in comics adaptations and heavily-illustrated text. The adaptations are written at an adult level, and utilize as much of the author’s original language as possible. Our goal is to create books that are enjoyable for adults, yet accessible to children ages twelve and up. Graphic Classics are available in bookstores and comics shops nationally, or direct from the publisher, Eureka Productions at http: ⁄ ⁄ www.graphicclassics.com. Libraries and schools can order from Diamond Book Distributors, Baker & Taylor, Ingram, Follett or other distributors.

IMAGE COMICS RAISES HELL (ON EARTH)
El Torres' Nancy In Hell Returns This January With All-New Miniseries

Berkeley, CA29 November 2011 -- She's already fought her way out of the depths of hell, armed only with a chainsaw and her badass attitude. Come January, the voluptuous Nancy will be topside again, but she's about to find herself in Hell on Earth!

Spanish comics scribe El Torres has enlisted the intricately detailed artwork of Enrique Lopez Lorenzana and coloring of Fran Gamboa, to render even the beastliest citizens of Nancy's Hell as breathtaking. This 4-issue Grindhouse inspired miniseries presents the follow up to last years' NANCY IN HELL miniseries, a take-no-prisoners tale of one woman versus the greatest evil. Now with the Gates of Hades left wide open, not even the angels in heaven can save our world from the hordes!

"It's not just because of the limitless special effects budget that the comics medium offers that we have big monsters, small monsters, tiny monsters, tentacled monsters, smelly monsters, and hot chicks," explained El Torres. "It’s because I have great artists taking my words and transforming them into awesome pictures. I never believed I could visit Nancy again, but thanks to Enrique and Fran, here we are again!"

"To depict these hellish nightmares from El Torres' mind pouring into San Diego city it's both a challenge and a pleasure," added Lorenzana. "Ryp did a wonderful job in the first miniseries, now it's my turn, and I'm really happy to have the chance of design new monsters in almost every page!"

NANCY IN HELL (ON EARTH) #1 (NOV110371), a 32-page full-color horror comic book for $3.99, will be on sale in stores and on digital platforms on January 25, and will be available for order in the November issue of Previews. NANCY IN HELL, VOL. 1 TP (NOV1000433, ISBN: 978-1-60706-354-4) collects the entire first story arc and is available for reorder now.

Harry Potter Alliance re-launches the “Not in Harry’s Name” Campaign
Gives Warner Bros. New Years Eve deadline to decide stance on fair trade

Boston, MA – At this year’s Quidditch World Cup, the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) officially re-launched the “Not In Harry's Name” campaign. This effort, which began in November 2010, asks Warner Bros. (WB) to make all Harry Potter chocolate products Fair Trade. The HPA is giving Warner Bros. until midnight on New Year’s Eve to respond to the HPA’s most recent letter. In previous months HPA Executive Director Andrew Slack has amicably discussed the matter with WB, including CEO Barry Meyer. However, WB has since stopped communication with the HPA on the issue and insists that the company it employs to make Harry Potter chocolate, Behr’s Chocolates, meets ethical sourcing standards while a third party company, Free 2 Work, has given Warner Bros. practices an "F" rating. This grade indicates that it there is a reasonable chance that chocolate sold in Harry Potter’s name has been made by children kidnapped from their homes and forced to work as slaves on the Ivory Coast.

"Imagine children at the Wizarding World in Orlando, Florida buying chocolate that comes from children the same age as them who have been kidnapped and forced into slavery,” said Slack. “We have given WB more than a year to process this reality and they have ultimately decided to ignore our requests to prove their “F” grade false. We’re giving them until New Year’s to either show us beyond reasonable doubt that this report is wrong or to finally meet with us in person and work out a solution to make all Harry Potter chocolate Fair Trade.”

During the month of December, the HPA is asking members to make video messages to WB, expressing their right as Harry Potter fans to know if the cocoa in Harry Potter chocolate is coming from child slavery. These videos will be posted on a special YouTube channel, MuggleHowlers. HPA members are also sending cease and desist letters, demonstrating that, in Slack’s words, “while Warner Bros. may own intellectual property, they do not own the intellect. They do not own the spirit of these books which we grew up with.”

The HPA has also produced its own, HPA Fair Trade chocolate frogs to indicate that it’s feasible to produce Harry Potter chocolate that does not use child slavery. Using Camino brand chocolate, manufacturing by Lucky Chocolates and art work by Alec Longstreth, sets of three chocolate frogs are being sold in the HPA's store for $10 each.

“Not In Harry's Name” was originally known as the "Starvation Wages Horcrux," the first part of the 12-month Deathly Hallows Campaign. During the course of the Deathly Hallows Campaign, the HPA collected more than 16,000 signatures on a petition to Warner Bros., asking them to use Fair Trade cocoa in their products. The petition was also signed by Harry Potter actors Evanna Lynch, Mark Williams, Natalia Tena, and Jason Issacs. The entirety of the HPA’s communication with Warner Bros. can be viewed at this link.
The HPA hopes that WB will choose to give a satisfactory answer by the deadline. However, if they do not, Slack explains what will happen next: “Then WB has decided to not stand for children’s rights and we will do everything within our legal power to change that. Imagine crowds of Harry Potter fans standing before regulatory bodies. Imagine occupying Warner Brothers right outside their building. At that point, the story changes. But we are very hopeful that we don’t get to that point.”

The HP Alliance (www.thehpalliance.org) is a 501c3 nonprofit that engages Harry Potter fans in social activism. With over 70 active chapters and 40 volunteer staff, the HPA has donated five cargo planes to Haiti, 55,000 books, protection for thousands in Darfur, and made huge strides in anti-genocide, LGBT, and media reform advocacy, and more. Covered in hundred of major publications and praised by JK Rowling, Harry Potter celebrities, Paul Farmer, and a slew of NGO’s the HPA recently came in first place in the Chase Bank Community Giving Contest on Facebook winning $250,000.
JANNA MORISHIMA JOINS PAPERCUTZ
TEAM AS ITS NEW MARKETING DIECTOR

(NEW YORK) November 29, 2011- Papercutz has created a new position of Marketing Director and filled it with Janna Morishima, formerly of Scholastic and Diamond Comics.

Ms. Morishima started in publishing with Scholastic and was a founding editor of its 'Graphix' line of graphic novels, where she helped bring Jeff Smith's BONE to color to a much wider audience as well as launching Raina Telgemeier's successful graphic novel adaptation of the BABYSITTERS CLUB series by Ann Martin. She then went on to become Director of Diamond Kids at Diamond Book Distributors, in charge of its general trade distribution clients' growing kids' lines, which included helping Francoise Mouly to launch her pioneering 'Toon Books' line for very young children. She pushed for and helped to implement brand new children's graphic novel sections in chain stores and elsewhere.

“We’re very excited to welcome Janna to our team as Papercutz experiences explosive growth with such licenses as the Smurfs and now Ninjago which has debuted with a 200,000 copy print run,” said Publisher Terry Nantier. “I’ve known her for a few years already and with her combined experience of editing and marketing children’s graphic novels and this, from the very start of this category’s introduction and growth, she will bring an added dimension of knowledge and energy. Anybody who knows her can see what a dynamo she is! She will bring boundless enthusiasm to our line and aggressive goals.”

"I love how graphic novels attract such a wide range of readers, from diehard bookworms to the most reluctant readers,” Janna Morishima said, “so when Papercutz offered me the opportunity to help spread the word about their fun and burgeoning line of children's graphic novels, I was happy to accept."

Papercutz was launched in 2005 revolutionizing evergreens Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys bringing them to comics for today’s generation, it has since added such bestsellers as Geronimo Stilton, Classics Illustrated, Disney Fairies and many more besides The Smurfs and LEGO Ninjago. Next year it will launch all new comics of The Three Stooges right before its new major motion picture from Fox and of the Power Rangers which were very successfully relaunched on Cartoon Network this year. There are many more series in the works.
