TWICE AS MUCH AS MARVEL FOR A DOLLAR LESS.

Okay, that’s a bold statement and possibly contentious enough to get you to read this but it’s absolutely true.

AMERICA’S GOT POWERS launches in April from Image by us, (Bryan Hitch and Jonathan Ross). We told you a bit about it in January. What we hadn’t told you until now was that issue one has THIRTY-EIGHT pages of story and is still only $2.99.

Here’s why.

Bryan says:  Since I started drawing Ultimates issue one in late 2001, I may have only delivered two or three 22 page books. I’ve always pushed the story either with additional visual material to underscore what’s been written or to pump action to the level we all wanted but would never have had the room for. So I just drew it the way it felt right to do so.

Go count the pages in each issue of Ultimates, Captan America: Reborn or FF. Not many 22 page issues. I got hell of course but my deal has always been that giving the story the best work it can have is the only deal that matters. I even did some pages for free to get them in the issues.

We have taken stuff out of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS issue one, moved it around and walked around the room whistling. It should have been a 22 page first issue but there were things we felt had to be there and those scenes needed to breath. The story needed to be told properly; it ALWAYS does. So we put it back in and told the story the way we wanted to. Thirty-eight pages of it!

Normally a book this size would be at least $3.99 but that didn’t seem fair to us. It was our decision to make the first issue this big and it’s not right to ask you guys to pay extra for it. We are proud of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS, insanely proud and we want to pass that on.

Big time.

We’re just another small business like many of the retailers and we believe completely in the story we’re trying to tell so instead of putting out a 20 page issue and asking you to pay $3.99 for it, we’re giving you nearly DOUBLE that for a dollar less.

It’s had a knock-on effect though. Initially we had intended to release issues one and two in the same month, a sort of double whammy to kick-start the book. We’ve changed that plan slightly as most of that material is now in a single 38-page issue rather than two separate books.

As a result issue two will move backwards slightly into May, issue three into June etc so our team doesn’t kill themselves providing this much awesome in a single month

So we ARE still releasing what we intended to in April; the same TWO ISSUES of story but now it’s in one book and only the price of a single. We’re giving you what we said we would but at half the price.

$2.99

Boom.

And, to emphasize that boom, here’s a sneak peek at a big boom in a cool two pager from the first massive double-sized issue of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS.

Did we mention it was 38 pages at $2.99? It’s also worth mentioning that we can’t guarantee any of the other issues won’t exceed 20 pages either. Though if they do, they’ll never exceed $2.99

Enjoy the pencils sneak peek. Over the next few days, we’re going to properly introduce you to our characters and the amazing world they live in along with loads of pencils and inks from the first issue to get you excited.

RAPTR launches GAMING REP SYSTEm THAT ranks players
IN THE GAMES THEY PLAY

Raptr Profiles Now Reflect a Complete Picture of a User’s Gaming Persona

Mountain View, Calif. – Feb. 29, 2012 – Raptr, the leading gamer social network with 12 million users, has launched a new gaming rep system to measure and reflect a user’s skills and experience in the games they play. Users earn ranks by playing games, which will unlock exclusive site features as well as real rewards from retail and game partners. With the launch of the new reputation system, Raptr profiles now reflect a complete picture of a user’s gaming persona, interests, expertise, and achievements. The new features are now live at http://raptr.com.

“Earning ranks gains more than simple bragging rights,” said Dennis Fong, CEO of Raptr. “Our goal is to leverage a user’s gaming persona to make their experience better, via giving them an outlet to show off their accomplishments, discover more relevant content, or earn rewards simply for playing games.”

The new gaming rep system allows users to earn ranks, starting as a “Newbie” and advancing all the way to “Elite” if they are in the top percentile in time played, achievements unlocked and more. Raptr also uses a gamer’s rep to deliver more relevant content to the user based on their rank, progress and recency of activity in a game. For instance, a gamer who is ranked a “Newbie” in a game is likely to see such content as strategy guides and FAQs, while an “Elite” may see the best community-curated Machinima videos. Future Raptr features will also leverage a user’s gaming rep in a similar fashion.

Raptr’s new gaming rep system introduces these features:
•        New, dynamic user profiles, interactive charts, and genre maps
•         A percentile-based ranking system that tracks a user’s hours and achievements and compares them with the rest of the community.  The ranks are as follows: Newbie –> Amateur –> Experienced –> Dedicated –> Hardcore –> Elite
•        Social leaderboards to see how a user stacks up against friends
•        Highly targeted and personalized news feed that delivers relevant content based on a user’s game collection, rank, most recent activity, and progress in a game
•        Real rewards as users rank up in the games they play

More details about the Raptr Rewards Program will be announced in the coming months.

Sir Lancelot Returns from Beyond …
to Bring Ruin to Camelot and MERLIN

The Most Noble and Mighty of Knights is Under Morgana’s Command
in ‘Lancelot du Lac,’ Airing Friday, March 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Only on Syfy

To save Camelot, Sir Lancelot sacrificed himself and vanished behind the veil of the netherworld – now, he’s back.  “Lancelot du Lac,” a new episode of MERLIN, airs this Friday at 10 p.m. ET/PT, only on Syfy … and in it, Lancelot is determined not to help Camelot, but to destroy it.

Hailed by SFX Magazine as “an extraordinary episode, bold, dark and sad,” “Lancelot du Lac” begins with the happiest of announcements: King Arthur asks for Guinevere’s hand in marriage.  But the news reaches Morgana, who sees in Gwen her greatest threat to assuming the throne of Camelot.  Morgana turns to the darkest of magic, necromancy, summoning the body of Sir Lancelot to do her bidding.

“We all have our secrets, and unfortunately for Guinevere, I know hers,” says Morgana when she learns of the engagement from duplicitous Agravaine.  What Morgana knows is that, long before Arthur and Guinevere began their romance, Gwen lost her heart, at least momentarily, to Lancelot (played by Santiago Cabrera of Alcatraz and Heroes).  As Morgana says: “Before she was Arthur’s, she was yours, Lancelot. You were her first love. And you will be her last.”

Dark and intense, often lushly romantic and achingly tragic, “‘Lancelot du Lac’ is one of the best episodes MERLIN has ever produced,” writes Digital Spy, an assessment with which series executive producer and co-creator Johnny Capps says he agrees.

“There are lots of episodes I love in this season, but one of my absolute favorites is when Lancelot returns,” Capps says. “The mechanics of the storyline required quite a bit of working out, and we had lots of arguments along the way. But in the end, I was really pleased with the story, and I was very impressed with the central performances – they are absolutely superb.  Santiago has turned into such a fine actor, and Bradley (James as Arthur) puts in a storming performance.”

The episode offers grand, sweeping passion – and stunning betrayal.  As an actor, “Lancelot du Lac” provided memorable challenge, says Katie McGrath, who plays Morgana.

“It was the best script I’d ever read – an extremely fairy-tale-like story that captures the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love triangle, and also feels like a true ensemble piece,” she explains.

Then, McGrath adds with a laugh and a smile worthy of Morgana herself: “Plus, you get to see Santiago Cabrera naked, which is wonderful.” She pauses. “Better yet, naked and under my control!”

“Lancelot du Lac,” an all-new episode of MERLIN, airs Friday, March 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT only on Syfy.  All three seasons of MERLIN are now available on DVD and on iTunes.  Be sure to follow the latest news on MERLIN at the Official Merlin page on Facebook.
Chillers spawns all new graphic novel series
Classic Troma film in anthology series as film gets re-released

Chillers, one of the most critically acclaimed Troma Films, will be venturing into an all-new anthology series of graphic novels starting in May, 2012.  The graphic novel series, based on the film’s writer and director, Daniel Boyd, is edited by Boyd who also contributes some of the stories.  It will be released by Transfuzion Publishing to book and comic stores on May 9, 2012.
Troma Films is supporting the release of the graphic novel with a re-release of the film on DVD that will be available also in May and the Buddy Black Band is releasing a tribute album, Witchfinger, to also coordinate with the graphic novel  with the album and videos to appear in March.

“The graphic novel,” said Chillers creator, Daniel Boyd, “is similar to the Troma film in that it deals with passengers who travel a certain bus and the stories behind them.”  The bus driver, Peterr Jesus, reprises his role from the film to serve as the host of comic stories ala the Cryptkeeper in the classic EC tales.  “The EC feel was something I was striving for in putting the book together,” Boyd continues, “it has that feel of those great horror stories.”

The classic film from Troma Studios captured the prestigious Silver Scroll Award and won acclaim from many reviewers.  Boyd, who is a Professor of Media Studies at West Virginia University, continued with other films and documentaries but always wanted to return to Chillers.  “I always felt there were an unlimited number of stories and the structure of comics, being very similar to film allows the love of horror that exists to cross-over between the mediums.”

Joining Boyd on the graphic novel are a number of creators including writers Robert Tinnell, Jason Pell, William Bitner, and Gary Reed. Artists include Ger Cuti, J.C. Grande, Juan Romera, Wayne Reid, and others.  It features a cover by David Michael Beck and Morgan Spurlock provides the introduction

According to Transfuzion publisher, Gary Reed, this graphic novel of Chillers is intended to be the first of many.  “When you have a hosted anthology like this,” said Reed, “it’s not a gimmick but rather a narrative structure that links seemingly divergent stories together.  Danny did such a great job on the film and followed that with this graphic novel.”  No schedule has been set for release of forthcoming books but Reed stated that the second book was already well under way.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sequart and Respect Films are proud to announce their upcoming documentary about the history of Image Comics! (A Kickstarter campaign has been created to help fund the project.)

Comics in Focus: The Image Revolution will examine one of the most important and daring moves in modern comic book history: Twenty years ago, a group of artists left Marvel Comics to create their own company, a company that continues to influence mainstream comics and culture to this day. Image Comics began as more than just a publisher — it was a response to years of creator mistreatment, and it changed comics forever.

The Image Revolution will tell the amazing story of this from-scratch company, from its founders’ work at Marvel, through Image’s early days, the ups and downs of the ’90s, and the publisher’s new generation of creator-owned properties like The Walking Dead. We will tell this story through new interviews with the people who made it happen. And what better time than during Image’s 20th anniversary to do it?

The film will be produced by the same Sequart / Respect team behind the critically-acclaimed documentaries Grant Morrison: Talking with Gods (now available on DVD) and Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts (out on DVD in mid March).

This will be the second (after Comics in Focus: Chris Claremont’s X-Men) in a new series of documentaries offering in-depth looks at significant works and moments that shaped comics history. These documentaries will be released through direct download and online DVD sales.

We have turned to Kickstarter to help fund this project. This is your chance to support discussion about the merits of comics and to help document stories about the people who have had a part in shaping contemporary pop culture.

Rewards include the documentary as a DVD and / or digital download, a “Thanks” and other credits in the film, and digital access to extra interview footage that won’t be included in the film. Rewards also include books and feature-length films from Sequart's catalog.

For more information, visit the project’s Kickstarter page or its page on Sequart.
THE KIDS ARE ALL FIGHT
Sidekicks get their turn in Danger Club from Image Comics

What if superheroes were real? And what if one day they all disappeared? In DANGER CLUB, a new Image Comics series by Landry Walker and Eric Jones, the fate of the world is in the hands of the allies that the heroes left behind — their teenage sidekicks. It's up to the this rag-tag and fragmented group to battle the immense cosmic evil that threatens the world. But the fight could be over before it even starts if the sidekicks' struggle for dominance destroys them from the inside.

"Eric and I wanted to take they typical assortment of sidekicks and strip them of their authority figures," explained Walker. "These are the most powerful beings on the planet, and the oldest is around sixteen. You take any group of teenagers and put them in a positions of absolute power... there will be some serious consequences. Some will seek to recreate the familiar hierarchy or attempt to establish their dominance while some will some will rise to the occasion."

Walker and Jones are no strangers to superheroes. However, the creative team behind Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, still feel like they've undertaken something new.

"The flexibility of working within our own superhero universe has been a rewarding experience," said Walker. "It's a very different animal — independent creation versus working within corporate-owned playgrounds — and it's allowing Eric and I to show sides of our work that we really haven't been given an opportunity to expose while working under a corporate umbrella. We've kind of gotten a label as 'all-ages' creators. That's not all we are. Fortunately, Image has given us an opportunity to show our range and diversity."

DANGER CLUB #1 will be in stores and digital platforms on April 4 and is available for preorder in the February issue of Previews (FEB120420). A three-page preview appears in INVINCIBLE #89, in stores on February 29.

Quinn is used to the pain and discipline behind the graceful movement of her dancing, but how will she deal with a life on the run? And will Alan be able to keep them both safe from the most formidable opponent he has ever faced?

Writer Nathan Edmondson (OLYMPUS, WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?) weaves a dark tale of intrigue and pursuit and artist Nic Klein (VIKING) creates a mood of foreboding as Alan and Quinn flee their pursuer through the heavily shadowed streets of Milan.

"Nic and I have sought to evoke the feel and vibe of the classic spy feature--like The Man Who Came in from the Cold or The Conversation, and tie that into a modern-day thriller comic," said Edmondson. "So DANCER has a spiraling, complex darkness in it punctuated with all the firepower of a high-octane thriller.

"We wanted to offer a book unlike anything we could find on the bookshelves," Edmondson continued, and the character of Quinn is at the heart of that difference. "At the crux of it all is a vibrant, strong-willed ballerina. She ads a visual and psychological motif to the story and it is through her that we can understand the lead characters in this story."

DANCER #1 (MAR120410) is a full-color 32-page comic for $3.50 available for preorder in the March issue of Previews. It will be in comic book stores and digital platforms on May 16. A four-page preview of DANCER #1 ran in USA Today on January 19.

BOOM! TOWN IN
APRIL

February 27, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA –BOOM! Town and Wieden + Kennedy Entertainment bring world-famous underground musician and artist Daniel Johnston to comics this April with his new graphic novel SPACE DUCKS: AN INFINITE COMIC BOOK OF MUSICAL GREATNESS.

A celebrated musician and recording artist with a 30-year career that includes over 20 albums -- including covers by Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, Tom Waits, Beck, and TV on the Radio -- Johnston was the subject of the 2006 documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" which won the Sundance Film Festival Director's Award. His drawings and paintings have hung in art galleries and museums across the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art. Johnston rocketed to global notoriety in the early 1990s when album artwork from his "Hi, How Are You?" record was featured on a t-shirt worn by Kurt Cobain at the height of Nirvana's exploding popularity.

SPACE DUCKS: AN INFINITE COMIC BOOK OF MUSICAL GREATNESS is Johnston’s debut graphic novel. Johnston, a long-time and dedicated fan of comic books, realizes his life-long dream of being a comic book artist with this release.

SPACE DUCKS is more than just a graphic novel, it’s a one-of-a-kind interactive comic book experience, complimented by the Space Ducks album and iOS App. The companion app will virtually take readers through Daniel's Outer-Space world of Ducks and Devils, with games to play, surprising voices from different talents, animations and videos from the comic book, links to exciting new Space Ducks merchandise, and a slew of Easter eggs, including contributions from some of the critically-acclaimed musicians who number amongst Daniel’s biggest fans. The app will also debut Daniel Johnston’s first new album since 2009.

On March 13th, in Austin Texas, SPACE DUCKS launches at SXSW with a show and invite-only, launch party, including headliners Built to Spill, along with Daniel Johnston and many more.

“This is another instance of bringing it all back home for me personally because I'm a native of San Antonio and went to school in Austin,” says Ross Richie, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of BOOM! Studios. “Daniel is a fixture of the central Texas music scene and an international symbol of the unique creativity the region offers. Getting a chance to work with a seminal voice like Daniel is exactly why I got into publishing in the first place."

SPACE DUCKS follows a banner first year of publishing for BOOM! Studios' lit comix imprint, BOOM! Town, which saw Shannon Wheeler win an Eisner Award for his work I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE FUNNIER. BOOM! Studios is enjoying back-to-back "Best Publisher" awards from Diamond Comic Distributors for 2009 and 2010.

DARK HORSE’S FREE COMIC BOOK DAY OFFERINGS TO INCLUDE A SPECIAL FOUR-PAGE STORY FROM CAITLÍN R. KIERNAN AND STEVE LIEBER’S ALABASTER
FEBRUARY 27, MILWAUKIE, OR—One of Dark Horse’s most-anticipated new series premiered in the company’s flagship anthology last week in Dark Horse Presents #9.

Dark Horse celebrates this event with additional news today that
Caitlín R. Kiernan’s highly anticipated new series will now be included in both of Dark Horse’s Free Comic Book Day books, with two pages in each book, to expose this exciting new series to as wide an audience as possible!
Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph more taskmaster than guardian.
This special four-page story, told across Dark Horse’s two FCBD offerings, will give readers a compelling glimpse into Dancy’s world and the blurry line that separates her from the angels she serves—and the monsters she hunts.
Look for Alabaster: Shelter in the back of both Dark Horse’s Star Wars/Serenity and Buffy/The Guild Free Comic Book Day comics on Saturday, May 5. Remember, you have to pick up both to read the whole story!
Pick up a copy of Dark Horse Presents #9 at your local comic shop for a special sneak peek at the highly anticipated series Alabaster: Wolves!

IMAGE COMICS’ MORIARTY

TO BECOME MUSICAL!
Daniel Corey and Raymond Schnurr team up to bring Sherlock Holmes' arch nemesis to the stage

Announced at the 2012 Image Comics Expo, Daniel Corey is partnering with composer Raymond Schnurr to create a new stage musical based on the Image Comics series MORIARTY, written by Daniel Corey and illustrated by Anthony Diecidue.

Currently titled MORIARTY, the stage musical will be loosely based on the first story arc of the MORIARTY series, MORIARTY: THE DARK CHAMBER. Corey will be writing the story while Schnurr - who is also currently scoring We Can Get It For You Wholesale for Neil Gaiman - will be composing the music. Corey and Schnurr will collaborate together on the lyrics. Like the comic, MORIARTY the stage musical will be a very gritty and dark piece with a sense of high adventure. The music will be based in hard rock, and the staging style will be a cousin to shows such as Les Misérables, Sweeny Todd and Phantom of the Opera.

"I am very excited to be collaborating with Ray on the upcoming MORIARTY stage musical," states creator Daniel Corey. "Ray is very in tune with the sort of storytelling style and sensibility that Anthony and I have worked so hard to convey with this series. This show will be epic in scale, and Ray's music will bring that extra level of dynamite that will be sure to knock the audience into the abyss where the Professor resides. It will be a dark journey, but an exciting and entertaining one."

Raymond Schnurr adds, "When I read MORIARTY for the first time, I was riveted. I contacted Daniel immediately and said, 'Let's turn this into a kick-ass musical!' I am excited to work with Daniel and create a musical as intelligent and exhilarating as his comic book series!"

MORIARTY: THE DARK CHAMBER, VOL. 1 TP (JUL110470, ISBN: 978-1-60706-450-3), a 128-page full-color paperback for $14.99, is available in all fine books stores and comic book retailers (www.comicshoplocator.com).

MORIARTY: THE LAZARUS TREE, VOL. 2 TP (JAN120526, ISBN: 978-1-60706-490-9), a 136-page full-color paperback, will be on sale in stores March 14th for $14.99 and is available to order in the January 2012 edition of Diamond Previews.
