COMIC-CON’S ORIGINAL MUSIC PANEL SCORES BIG FOR 5TH YEAR IN A ROW WITH SPECIAL PANEL FOR FANS
SURPRISE GUEST DEBORAH ANN WOLL JOINED FELLOW TV STARS MATT LANTER AND JANINA GAVANKAR IN A CONVERSATION WITH TV AND FILM’S TOP MUSICIANS
San
Diego, CA (July 22, 2013) – Fans at Comic-Con were brought closer than
ever before to the musicians behind their favorite films, TV shows, and
video games at CW3PR’s fifth annual “Behind the Music” panel in San
Diego on July 18. This year, three of television’s hottest acting stars
participated in the panel to give fans a unique perspective on how music
plays a big part for their characters.
Geoff Zanelli (“The Lone Ranger” and “The Odd Life of Timothy Green”), Robert Duncan (“Castle” and “Last Resort”), iZLER (“Revenge” and “Shameless”), FM Le Sieur (“Being Human”), Chris Tilton (“Fringe” and “Almost Human”), Kevin Kiner (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Hell on Wheels”), and Michael Suby (“The
Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals”) hit the stage on Thursday evening
at the San Diego Convention Center, as they took turns talking about
what it’s like creating music for each of their projects.
As one of the moderators for the evening, Matt Lanter (“90210”
and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) kicked off the panel by addressing the
composers, “I’m excited to be here, because honestly, I’m anxious to
hear all your answers. Some of you, we actually have projects in common,
others we don’t, so I’m excited to hear [what you have to say].”
“True Blood” fans were elated when Janina Gavankar (“True
Blood” and “Arrow”) shared her musical talents with the room by sending
in a pre-recorded video to address both the fans and panelists as a big
fan of musical score, and to give a special announcement for surprise
guest moderator and fellow “True Blood” cast member, Deborah Ann Woll. [Janina’s video is available for viewing here: http://vimeo.com/70517580]
Deborah Ann praised
the panelists by saying, “As actors, we know very well that every
scene, every character, is enhanced by the music that accompanies it, so
hopefully we have some inside tips we can get out of you guys.”
Throughout
the event, the composers each discussed what it was like working on
their respective projects and how aspiring musicians can find themselves
writing songs, lyrics, and score for a film, television show, or video
game. Multiple panelists shared a common thread of collaboration on some
level, with the same producing teams, directors, and musicians.
Kevin Kiner talked
to fans about his involvement in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and what
it was like to reinvent John Williams’ iconic “Star Wars” sound each
week for the show, where he touched upon his meetings with George Lucas
before his start on the series to find his own sound for the show.
Michael Suby spoke
about working with Executive Producer, Julie Plec throughout his career
on projects such as “Kyle XY,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and the upcoming
spinoff series, “The Originals,” and the great rapport they now have
with each other after working together for so long.
Geoff Zanelli,
who has worked with Hans Zimmer on multiple movies, spoke about their
collaborative relationship and the hard work that went into re-imagining
the William Tell Overture theme song for the recently released, “The
Lone Ranger” film.
After watching an exclusive clip of iZLER visiting
the set of “Revenge” with series star, Emily VanCamp, fans listened as
he talked about working with the same 50-piece orchestra each week to
create the iconic sound for the show.
Robert Duncan spoke
about his use of unusual instruments, including an actual submarine
that he utilized to score the television series “Last Resort.” Fans got a
behind the scenes look in a video of Robert using various mallets and
tools on a submarine docked in San Diego: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4R3TrLK0Zw
FM Le Sieur made
a special trip all the way from Montreal, Canada to talk to “Being
Human” fans about his work on the Syfy show. He spoke about the various
themes he has created for the characters on the show, and finding a
different sound for a vampire, werewolf, and ghost.
The
number one question asked at the CW3PR panels throughout the years from
fans to the composers is “How do I get your job?”, and this year was no
exception. Chris Tilton educated attendees about how
he got his start working with well-known composer, Michael Giacchino,
and how important it is to get internships and learn as much as you can
from your musical idols.
The
panelists concluded by talking about what projects were coming up next
for them, followed by a Q&A session, where fans made it clear they
would need at least three hours to get every question they had answered.
The panel was co-sponsored by ASCAP,
a wonderful organization owned and run by its members, and the leading
U.S. Performing Rights Organization representing over 460,000
songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
